    I have Spina Bifida and Scoliosis also. When I was born, I had my first surgery at 3 hours old. The Dr.s said I would never walk and I would never live past 16. I'm now 35 and after some setbacks and personal battles, I am getting back into fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Thank you for sharing your story Lindy!!

      That's great to hear. It sucks that the doctor gave you such grim prognosis. It should be a lesson to all that doctors make errors in judgement just as anyone else could, so it's best to seek out multiple doctors before doing anything.

    Lindy, don't know if you remember me. We played soccer together :) glad I saw this on here, I got into body building women's figure and now since i'm in the army I switched over to more calisthenics. I go to a cross fit class on saturday to learn all the movements and techniques. Ill will keep you in mind now to motivate me during my lil injury's, i don't know how you stayed sane, i get really emotional over muscle strains much less a back injury. Your truly are an inspiration.

    This is so inspiring for me. I hurt my back in gymnastics years ago and it still affects me now. It kept me from pushing hard in all the sports and other fitness activities I've done. I now know (even before watching this) that I can push hard, but I do need to listen to my body too. Thank you for publishing this video.

    Thank you Linsey, what a inspiration. I to have back injuries, I was in a car accident in 1988 and had a few more injuries along the way, but I never let it get me down. Today I am stronger and walking and exercising.

    No matter whether it is a standard cross fit injury. To be able to get up after a fall and keep going and pushing harder requires a lot of courage and determination. Hats off to Lindy Barber...

    I love this story so much, I'm going through the same deal just not as much difficulty as her. I'm currently waiting on my MRI for the results but in my remaining time I keep pushing myself to get stronger mentally and physically. this has really inspired to not be so afraid of what the doctors are going to tell me. thank you for posting this video, it helped me so much!

    love this! I have delt with a spondylolethesis for 13 yrs... i was a competitive bodybuilder and figure competitor for 7 of those years and was also told to stop lifting.. now starting crossfit and hoping to also be a competitor, I find I only feel stronger and more stable with every lift. I do find it interesting her doc told her to become a runner... this was something i was told over and over NOT to do.
    This is great inspiration for others with similiar injuries, thanks for the motivation

    Very inspiring, thanks for sharing your story, you have an amazing spirit and determination. I'm glad you didn't listen to the doctor. 17 years ago I was diagnosed with knee issues and my doctor said that I would never run again or do any heavy lifting such as squats and eventually would kneed a knee braise. I didn't like what he said and was determined to find away to do what I love. Since then I've competed in Triathlons, ran ultra marathons, and Spartan Racing, and 3 years ago I joined CrossFit, and hoping to make it to the regionals next year in the masters 55 -59 age group.

    How many athletes in major sports have similar stories of injuries where doctors told them "you'll never play your sport again"?
    Stop hating because it's Crossfit. Any sport will injure if proper form and techniques are not used and pre-existing conditions exist.
    I was an uninformed hater once and now in in the best shape of my life.
    Lindy is an inspiration.

    i played soccer also and am very into fitness now, but i also have lower back issues. i weight about 120 and i'm squatting 200 right now and i've been fearful of messing up my lower back. watching this video inspired me so much. to just fight through the fear and have that inspiration that even worse case scenario-i break my back squatting- It's only a minor setback with the right will power and determination. I'm so inspired. Thanks. #strongwomenlift !!

We try to train smart, rest and recover, keep ego in check and get help when we need it. I love stories like this. I'm a professional wakeboarder from just an hour outside of Louisville and two years ago I broke my l5 and l5 but luckily recovered well and this past year i was training for the professional wakeboard tour and snapped my left femur in half. That was 4 and a half months ago, I made up my mind that i would be back on the water before 6 months and thats when I found crossfit. It has truly changed my life and got me doing back what I love but in the process i found my other love and it's crossfit.

    i feel you man, I came from shoulder injury too. for the first 3~4 months I couldn't do any presses, no gymnastic movements. after a month later from the injury I started doing cleans (just cleans, no jerks, no snatch) but I've always done squats though. My legs are stronger than ever now. anyway after 4 months, I started pressing again at very light weight, work the weight back up. 6 months now from the injury I am doing all pressing, dips, muscle-ups, so happy. the injury din't hold me back

    I did crossfit before I had a spinal fusion done and it's what allowed me to get up and be able to move and heal like I have been. I'm slowly getting back into it and taking it a little at a time because I know that eventually I will build back up to where I was and be amazing again. I still listen to my doctors and only lift 25lbs till I'm released but little by little I will get there again.

    Sucks how people make this about doctors. Like we are the ones holding you back. I highly doubt the doctor told Lindy "you will NEVER squat again." He probably said it might be a better idea to avoid squatting and pick another activity. This is Lindy Barber vs Lindy Barber. Not vs physicians. Physicians give advice based on experience but everyone is different in their ability to recover. Pretend the doctor tells lindy to do what she has done in the video. Work her way up, build her strength, and start squatting again. Then 4-5 years later lindy snaps again ... this time damaging the spinal cord causing permanent motor injury. Lindy is pissed and sues doc for everything he is worth...

    • @thegarbageman21
      @thegarbageman21 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MICHAEL COELHO I think you demonstrate the point I was trying to make. Are you saying that your doctor told you that it would take 6 months to touch the ground and don't bother doing anything about it? or is that would you took from what your doctor said? If that is really what he said than I am sorry you had to deal with that.
      Or was it more like ... I estimate it will take around 6 months to recover but I will recommend some treatment / rehab / etc so we can move forward in the best way possible?
      People are vulnerable when getting bad news and that often correlates with forgetting that the doctor is on your side.

    • @DuckDogTitus
      @DuckDogTitus 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thegarbageman21 Dude, its Jerry Maguire vs Mass Production vs Cost of Business. Most patients are 'mass serviced' quickly by doctors who need to cover their butts. If the doc tells her she can go squat and she hurts herself, he's facing a lawsuit. If he tells her not to, his bases are covered. Most doc's dont have the time or resources to work with their patients in the 1:1 way that recovering 'athletes' need, unless they are a team doc specifically for that athlete. The rising costs of practice drives a rising need for mass production and that's driving a bigger gap between the patient and the doctor. Its a ongoing circle that's getting worse as our healthcare system gets worse.
      How many doctors take the time to ask you how your family is doing, how you are with your goals, where do you see yourself in five years, etc? Very few. I've known only ONE and she now works for a mass production type clinic because it's more lucrative. It costs so much to see a doctor now days most of us aren't going to come back to develop a 'recovery' plan. Additionally, after having doctors approach me with printed webmd and other forms (because they had JUST googled something while I was in the room waiting) I have realized that unless we need testing of some sort done, the internet is a cheaper way to self diagnose than to risk viruses of a dirty clinic and pay out the bucks for a visit and RX.
      Its not your fault, but its where healthcare has taken us and its why I'm a big fan of the cash-only doctors now who no longer accept insurance.

    • @thegarbageman21
      @thegarbageman21 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      DuckDogTitus I agree with a lot of what you have to say but not sure how it applies to my post lol... The battle in the video and your battle with healthcare isn't with physicians but rather the people who make the decisions.
      The internet is a powerful tool but it has also helped place healthcare in the predicament it is in today. But i agree if it is something minor that doesn't require treatment and you can google to confirm that ... im all for saving the $$ in a doc visit.

      My doctor told me not to ever squat again, because i have osteoarthritis in both knees and that I needed knee replacements. He told me he would do the left one right away and the right one six months later. I ignored his advice and continued to Squat, Bench press and Deadlift, both in the gym and in competitions. I have broken records in all three lifts and continue to this day. On the 20th of this month I will be 73 years old. So my advice is, DO WHAT YOUR HEART TELLS YOU AND ENJOY YOUR LIFE. I will carry on until they carry me off, God Bless and a Happy and healthy Christmas

    • @DreNizzo

      Hey, thanks for doing what you do Doc. My initial thoughts when reading the teaser about this video was "Really? Did a doctor really say 'you will never squat again'"? (Shit I don't know if my punctuation is correct there). It's always, "the doctors said I would never walk again," and it's intended merely to enhance dramatics. And it's an insult to doctors everywhere. Yes, her story is touching and motivating, but let's stop making doctors out to be the bad guys here who get shown up.

    When the doctor tells you something like "You'll never be able to squat or do this again", it doesn't mean you won't physically be able to do it; it means that continuing to do so will eventually lead to long term problems. One man I worked with, who received a much similar diagnoses, went on to continue his work in mechanics. 3 years later, he came back with another split L3. The third time was the charm, however, and he is now paralyzed from the lower quadrants down.

    Perhaps you people should read closer. Lindy was diagnosed with spina bifida and scoliosis - AFTER THE INJURY. It's amazing she was able to be an athlete in the first place. But even more amazing she was able to recover from this injury. CrossFit isn't the reason she was injured - she had pre-existing undiagnosed conditions. CrossFit is likely the reason her injury wasn't more severe.

      Trent Lythgoe look at how her back is curved in the top half of the squat. Her back is curved forward(idk how the fuck to explain this well through text), which is a good way to fuck up your back. I squatted like that when I first started, and I paid for it.

    i wish i knew how she recovered as I was just told by a lumbar specialist that I can never squat again as well. I injured my L4-L5 doing a deadlift, box jump, kettle bell WOD. It's been a year and am still fighting the pain daily. I'm a firefighter and still have 20 years to go in my career. It's a scary thing to think I may not finish it. I am having a real hard time going back to conventional lifting and miss weight lifting and met cons.

      See a chiropractor. Try prolotherapy. Try prp injections. Try stem cells. Don't let the injury define you and destroy your life.

      ApOcA LyPTiC PRP injections and MENTAL toughness! Don't allow the fear to consume you. Be patient and seek triumph. Get a hangup. Try water exercises! I go in for surgery tomorrow and have been allowing the fear to consume me. I KNOW I am in good hands and have found the best doctors to fix me up. Trust yourself, trust love and trust the universe! I have sought out all alternative therapies and its time for some conventional intervention and I am excited to not wake in pain everyday. I have a shoulder repair to mend and can NOT wait to get to Crossfit. Be well, Friend!

      Something I would recommend, and use myself (I have some early signs of scoliosis and definitely back pain), is what's known as an "Atlas Orthogonal". They're a branch of chiropractic that specialises with the atlas which is the very first vertebrae in the spine and controls much of the other functions.
      They also fix various other problems, for example I had some back pain after deadlifting and I saw her and she said (if I remember it correctly) the L3 had popped out. She popped it in, and good to go.
      So that's my advise, an Atlas Orthogonal.
      Please definitely keep me updated on your situation.

      ApOcA LyPTiC What chiropractors do is not beneficial of an unstable back. Their manipulations are for those with a stable spine, not for you. If you let them do that to you, you risk more harm than good.
      PRP has mixed results and you may have to travel overseas to get it done. Why? Because the evidence is too weak for it to be done in the US.
      Stem cells ...again you would be travelling overseas.
      What you need is to develop the muscles that support your spine. See a physical therapist.

    Been lifting (bodybuilding) for the last 14 years of my life. Doing squats, deadlifts, bench press, strict form pull ups etc etc. Beside a shoulder injury (impingement) I have not a single issue.
    Because I mind my form and ROM.

    Well my hat off to her for sure.i know it's a struggle.in 95 I was crushed and broke my pelvis in 2 places.then in 2009 I had to have back surgery for a tumor in the spinal column.it was going the length of 5 vertabrae and was pinching off the spinal cord and started losing use of my legs.docs didn't know for sure what caused that tumor but luckily it wasn't malignant.then in 2014 all in 1 months time i went from walking with a cane,to 2 canes,to a walker,to crawling on the ground.docs couldn't explain this either but muscles in my legs went so tight i couldn't straighten my legs past 90 degrees.it affected both legs.
    Docs put in a pump in my belly with a catheter going to the spinal column.it has baclofen,a muscle relaxer.will be 3 yrs ago in November that I came off the road from being a truck driver.but I am able to walk with crutches,fore arm crutches and even 1 cane at time.ill get back in a truck again.my hat off to Lindy.anyone got other ideas are welcomed .already doing therapy to

    As someone who start crossfit this year, and has Ankylosing Spondylitis, I find this story and watch Lindy at the regionals, very inspiring and motivational. Does anyone know what she does for pain relief and other rehab outside of crossfit? @ShaughanTillmanFilms
