in most cases, Gods cant exert their full power without a mortal conduit, the eye glow is likely both a not so subtle clue that Odysseus is heeding the lesson of Poseidon, but also Zeus actively shielding and channeling his power through Odysseus to smite his crew.
@denzilbrowder5509 not just that but thematically it makes sense as that would of most likely been zues's will anyway if it was up to him a part alot of people forget is alongside his massive ego Zeus was a justice bringer it's why we still today associate divine justice with lightning striking you down and when dealing with helios cattle well odyseus was the one person not to act. But odyesus was already wayyyyyyy on the bad side of the gods so this torment was partially psychological to put it on him two birds one stone. He gets his desired outcome of justice but ALSO to mess with the head of a mortal who dared play games with gods.
@@Lightmaster677not necessarily, immortal could just mean they had the potential to live forever before they were killed They didn’t get to have them because Zeus showed up
@@Naknave In the original text, the carcasses of the cows got up and walked around. Some even mooed while being roasted over a fire. If that ain't immortal I don't know what is.
I like how when Zeus say that hunger was far to great he isnt looking at Ody but looking straight where Eurylcus and the crew are, hes aware of who fucked up here but hes still making the captain choose to be the death of his crew
Yeah, but they are in this situation because of Odysseus constant screw up. Him sacrificing them is the ultimate egoistic gesture, and it doesn't come consequences free. He got stuck on an island where he was supposed to spend his remaining days in self-loathing and home sickness.
@giacomoromano8842 I don't know if I would call oydessus mistakes constant, the cyclops is undeniably a fuck up but I would point out that if his crew and specificly his second in command had listened to him about the bag they would have made it home in the ocean saga and Zeus is only there in thunder bringer cause Eury killed the cows of Helios after he was begged not to, ody doesn't come out free of blame but he pissed a god off unknowingly while there was way no the crew didn't know that killing a gods cows would get him butt hurt
@@evolutionsfavoritemistake7132this one right here. It's one thing if it was a lack of hindsight, but another thing entirely if you already went through the manhole once and still decide to fall inside it
@@giacomoromano8842 I wouldn't say Ody has made constant mistakes though? Like, the sirens weren't a mistake, him warning them not to kill the cow was not a mistake, etc. Like, Ody letting six people die was not good morally, but it was not a mistake (well, maybe a moral mistake, but not really a strategic mistake; if u are being really cold about it), it was a calculated (and pretty cold) choice he made to get back to his wife. They then munity against them, and say he should take all the blame as captain. And stab him. And despite that, he still tries to warn them about the cow, and begs them not to kill it, and tires to get them out of there before Zeus comes. Like, it was probably at least partially so he wouldn't die so he can back home to his family, but he still tried to get them out of there, at least. And then Zeus came and basically forced him to choice between himself and his crew, for a mistake that wasn't his. Not saying him choosing himself, so he can get back to his family and home, over crew and friends was good. But at the same time, he was about to be punished for a mistake he did not make, and tired to warn others about and tired to get them to stop, but they didn't. I can understand why they didn't stop, they are tired, hungry, etc., and just human, but they still made a big mistake, that Ody tried to prevent them from making. I am not saying Ody didn't make his own mistakes and/or (very) morally questionable choices. But this is quite he uncharitable look of events here. Imo. For reasons I explained.
@Dragon_Aoi Even the morality question of sacrificing 6 men to Scylla is... debatable, at best, since even in the original Odyssey, his 2 choices were between Scylla and Charybdis i.e. get 6 people killed or all of them killed. And let's not forget, GODDAMN POSEIDON is afraid of Scylla (Sirenope literally says "He's afraid to roam" when describing Scylla's lair), the same Poseidon that EFFORTLESSLY destroyed 11 of Odysseus's 12 ships. In other words, not sacrificing anyone and fighting her would have also gotten them all killed. If you sat there in the middle of the sea, you would also die. Tell a crew with people (that are traitorous, stupid and selfish) like Eurylochus (Opened a bag when he was told not to, wanted to abandon multiple men in Circe's Island and then Mutiny. Remember Eurylochus said that to "greet it was our choice" when talking about them meeting Circe. That dumbass didn't even bother stopping his men from making a stupid decision, or at least convincing them to be careful, before trying to sack them off) that 6 men need to die? Those morons would find a way to kill themselves until only 6 people were left i.e. when going through Scylla becomes just as impossible as anything else. Odysseus royally screwed up with the Cyclops, make no mistake. But the path to Scylla wasn't a consequence of Odysseus' actions in the first place. And he STILL tried to make the best possible decision for his crew. Yeah, knowingly getting 6 people killed isn't "noble" by any stretch of the imagination, but it was the only option he had, because of reasons outside of his control. I don't think Odysseus is morally right or justified in Scylla, but he's not wrong here, either. The only times where Odysseus morally crossed the line so far were: Polyphemus (since in canon it's confirmed he shot the sheep in Polyphemus' cave), Remember Them (flat out lying to himself and the cyclops in saying he led with peace when he didn't, making the cyclops even more disdainful of what a human would call "peace". To say nothing of how he didn't kill the cyclops and crippled it instead, which was morally worse in ancient Greece) and, Different Beast (when he brutally killed all the sirens. You can debate if killing the sirens was necessary, but what you can't debate is how Odysseus made their deaths as miserable as possible). But I definitely see the future sagas, changing the number of times he crosses the line.
True, but you gotta respect his courage and outright fearlessness for doing so no matter how reckless it is since Zeus could literally just zap him into dust. But, the dude has a death wish.
@@andifishgallery9400You wanna shed more tears? Well, listen up. The animator actually said in another reply thread that Eurylochus wasn’t reaching out for Odysseus. He actually pushed him off the ship to try and save him. No matter how angry he was, in times of danger, his first instinct was to save his brother-in-law. AKA “🎵You’re like the brother I could never do without…🎵” Hope you HAD a good day
And I'm scared of this Zeus IMMEDIATELY! He's just enough not human looking, the black eyes, the ears, the cloud hair, the _claws._ Zeus is just barely trying to look human, and it's unnerving,
I *love* the image of Zeus using lightning as a whip so much. Usually people have him use it as a spear/javelin, so the idea that he can manipulate it into something more flexible is really interesting.
the spear is due to the fact him and his brothers use spears with a different number of points, Zues' lightning has one thus is a spear, Hades has his Bident with the two and then Pos has his classic weapon
Zeus manhandling the cloud? Incredible Zeus yeeting the crew around just to show he can? Spectacular Odys eyes turning yellow? Showstopping Zeus taking off into the air? Breathtaking Eurylochus at the end??? 0/10 pls pay for my therapist bills (jk it was *chefs kiss*)
The real kicker is 3:49-3:50 where Eurylocus pushes Odysseus away. In the end, Eurylocus loved his brother too much, and chose to save him (even though Odysseus wasn't going to die anyway).
@@0axis771 That seems like a weird interpretation to me. For one, the choice was explicitly between odysseus and everyone else, so it's not like zeus was gonna kill odysseus. Two, eurylochus was literally just about to attack odysseus half a second earlier. Three, it honestly looks more to me like odysseus was being launched backwards by the strength of the blast and eurylochus was reaching out for him. I feel like if the animator wanted eurylochus to push odysseus, they would have added a frame where the hand is actually touching.
@@kingacrisius 1) Yes, Odysseus WAS going to live, but Eurylocus acted on instinct and just pushed cause of the danger. 2) Yes, he was, but that's why it's a weird thing where he switched from using his sword to suddenly thrusting his hand to push Odysseus instead. It shows that in the end, he wasn't going through with attacking him. 3) Nope. 3:49, you see Eurylocus's hand on Odysseus's chest, so at 3:50, you see how it was Eurylocus pushing him.
@@0axis771 I think you're seeing odysseus' left arm outstretched as he's being flung backwards. Compare the muscle on the left and right of the circle on that first arm to that of odysseus and eurylochus on the next frame. It looks exactly like odysseus' left arm, and very little like eurylochus' arm, considering the muscles are backwards.
@@0axis771 Also idk the animator would have realized this when making the scene, but when you push outwards with your hand, your palm does not end up facing straight out like that, it kinda faces down. The palm faces outward when you're reaching out.
The parallels are crazy, Europhylus says as the captain he must take the blame, they commit mutiny, hes no longer captain and Europhylus decides to kill the cow despite being warned. Sh*t hits the fan and they go back to calling him Captain again 😭
counterpoint, the mutiny reverted at the end of the song + Eurylechous just wanted to die by a god rather than starving which inate is stupid, since why would he even listen to Ody and run?? like I'll be real, Eurylechous is rly weird in Epic, him opening the wind bag makes zero sense considering he was the most logical one prior, then he apologized, started to mutiny, won, and let it be reverted? he choose to die a worthy death but then changed his mind???? he's so weird.
@@RacketEPIC the thing is that int eh actual myth the crew is basically like this. They opened the bag of wind when they could see their home, killed the cows against direct orders and so on.
@@dragb9284 i understand that, I've read it, eury was an actual idiot there, here however, he shows the fact that he does indeed have some brain cells running in his mind, but other times it just gets deleted, that's what annoys me
@@RacketEPIC I mean. In both the myth and the song, he and the rest of the crew are quite literally starving to death at this point. I think countless accounts can tell you that when the body is starving to death, it doesn't necessarily think straight, if that makes any sense?
This is probably the darkest one cuz none of the other renditions I’ve seen show Eurylochus and the remaining crew slowly getting disintegrated by the lightning.
Fun fact: Sublimation or "to sublime" something is to instantly or near instantly change it's state from solid to gas, almost entirely skipping the conversion to liquid. When Zeus says he is going to 'sublime them for their act of crime', he's speaking literally. His lightning strike basically reduces their bodies down to ash.
I love how much FUN Zeus is having in this animatic. Like, he’s got no personal stake in this, he’s just making sure Helios gets his due, and it’s not like the crew are any threat to him. He can have as much of a power trip as he wants, and in a weird way that emphasizes his role as a KING more than him being serious about it would. What’s the point in having being king of the gods if you don’t get to show off every now and then?
I absolutely adore the use of Zeus's eagle imagery when he's emerging from behind Odysseus, it gives the moment so much weight + the way you animate lightning is *incredible*
I’d also argue that leaning into the animal imagery of the gods makes them ever so slightly more inhuman- and considering the way they toy with humans, this is an angle that I very much enjoy thinking about.
@@josephscott1292 Absolutely, the fact that this Zeus design doesn't go for outright strength & instead displays that through spectacle is awesome & really well done
3:49-3:50 Wait, hold on... Did... Did you have Eurylocus push Odysseus as if to save him? Cause it definitely looked like that was what he was doing, despite first coming at him with the sword. Cause if your intention was that he went for the attack, but then chose to save Odysseus at the end, that would be painfully beautiful and bittersweet.
@@0axis771 Hee hee you caught it! My thought process was despite Eury’s rational decision to end Odysseus, when it really came down to it his instinct was to try and save him. Odysseus would’ve lived anyway, but like I said. Instinct!
@@Duvetbox Aww, you gave me the *feels* for Eurylocus! In the end, Eurylocus showed that he truly loved his brother. Thanks. I've seen 3 versions of that ending, one where Eurylocus was just like everyone else, another where he just resigned to his fate while the others attacked, and then yours. Yours won the top spot for me just for that. Absolutely beautiful.
I love how Zeus say at the end "true nature be reveal" Odysseus closes his eyes and accepts that his actions and possible death by his crew. And Ery seeing this action, xhose to instead of attacking him, pushes Odysseus off the boat. Revealing both of their true natures to the other.
I mean if you listen to the lyrics he literally calls his thunder in a feminine pronoun, like how people would call their cars their baby and refer to them as “her” or same with firearms, like Zeus holds pride in his thunder and his status as the king god of thunder, like an extension of himself knowing he can only “wield” and bend “her” to its will probably, the “thunder” only listens to his command like loyalty
@@dt060802I took the feminine pronouns for “pride” like how he said pride is a damsel in distress, with his Thunder he wield her, brings her through the wringer, with his thunder he can wield pride and bend someone’s pride
I love 2:52, when Penelope disappears and there's just Zeus standing in the background looking like some kind of eldritch horror. It's awesome. Great work.
With the death of his crew brings the death of his humanity that was the final straw🤯. “I see a man who gets to make it home alive but it’s not longer you”
Loved how you portrayed Odysseus smiling face when he made his decision. Also imagined it to be that way: literally on the verge of mental breakdown and insanity, but at the same time coming to terms with the inner monster. Simply brilliant
"Should I stay in the clouds where I belong and judge from above like the god I am? Nah, better go down there and play with them, just because I can" -Zeus
The whole song is about how awesome he is with the a few mockery mixed in for the sake of lol, then completely fly away after he done. While this is a tragedy for Odysseus, this is nothing more than a boring chore for Zeus so he have to entertain himself
@RavenSutcliffe That's probably what Poseidon meant when he said he rarely gets pissed of, he probably meant 'Well you need to do something actually insulting, most of my siblings, nephew and nieces are way worse, my aunt Aphrodity would do worse just for saying someone was prettier'
@@anastasija6866 lmfaoooo the Olympian family soap opera "listen my niece and nephew killed 14 children because their MOTHER made a snide comment about theirs. And then they brought her the corpses and turned her into a rock so she'd grieve them forever. My wife turned a girl into a deformed bloodthirsty monster because I LOOKED at her a bit too much. At least mutilating my kid is a reasonable thing to be pissed about"
Man, making the clouds flow from Zeus' hair and clothes is such a radical design idea; it really sells just how damn powerful and intimidating he is . Also, I dig how inhuman he looks, and how clear it is he's really not taking this whole thing too seriously. I guess for him this is just a fun diversion than anything, lol. The expressions on Odysseus are great, really showing how much this whole ordeal is putting the pressure on him, and the shot of his distraught expression reflected in Eurylochus' blade is fantastic. The final shot is also a good reminder that, beyond anything else, Eurylochus was actually one of Odysseus' oldest friends alongside Polities - now Odysseus really is all alone. Great stuff all around!
Oh god! Why do you have to break my heart at the end with him reaching for Polites and Eurylochus????? The rise of Zeus up through the clouds to smite them was absolutely gorgeous!!!!
2:20 This is a callback to the first song, but these words have a whole new meaning. He doesn't want to choose because it's a difficult choice. He had his mind made up the moment the song started. He just didn't want to say it out loud.
Oh, his FACE... Completely at peace knowing he's killing the idiots that messed up every single time after the Cyclops. The CATHARSIS. The fact that he doesn't even have the energy to do anything other than smile... The fact that he's just DONE. INCREDIBLE work!
I couldn’t blame anybody for going crazy having a crew like this!! Quite literally everything they touched went clean to hell, I probably would’ve wound up killing them myself at that stage. I mean the cyclops was bad, the bag of wind was a disaster, the witches incident was bad, but honestly the damn cows was just the last straw.
I don’t think it was peace or cathartic for him. He still very much didn’t want to kill his men, it was more acceptance and defeat. He knew he couldn’t just leave his wife, child and kingdom without a king. He knew his crew messed up and despite not wanting them to die he knew what he had to do. He looked so sad and the shot before he smiled his lip looked like it was quivering. Ody really hates himself for it because he does care for his men. Yea they were stupid and messed up but he did too. He was, like you said, just done.
let me just tell you, the brain sparks that went off when I realised that Odysseus's vision/memory of Penelope was bright yellow, just like Zeus's lightning, how Odysseus's eyes were bright yellow when he said "I know", almost like Zeus was wielding his will and heart like he was wielding thunder. Incredible. Show stopping. I love this so much
This Zeus, he isn't just a king. He is a living storm. The thunder, the lightning, the rain, the air itself, everything. It is more than clear he is not human, not only through his appearance, but also his power. He isn't just a king, isn't just a god. He is a force of nature, given flesh and blood.
I actually teared up seeing Eury getting consumed by lighting and then Ody seeing a vision of Polities and Eury as he passed out. Like that’s what he gave up - he embraced the monster, letting go of embracing the world with open arms, and just sacrificed his remaining men and brother. And Eury was literally grabbing his sword, about to try to go up against ZEUS of all gods for himself, the men, and ODY. I’m 😭😭😭 How dare you truamatize me in this way?!
Want me to traumatize you more? 3:50 Eurylocus is pushing Odysseus out, despite at first swinging his sword. It means that despite his anger at Odysseus choosing to let them die, Eurylocus still loved his brother and his last act was to save Odysseus.
@@0axis771 I didn’t see that as Eury pushing him out of the way - I saw it as him still trying to get to Ody to attack him for dooming him and the crew. But honestly I can’t tell. If that’s true then yeah that’s heartbreaking. 😭😭😭 There’s another version of Thunderbringer where the crew attacks Ody but Eury is the only one that DOESN’T. He just stands there in betrayal… but still can’t find it in himself to attack his brother. Like I side eye Eury is this saga a lot, but god Ody and Eury were brothers and they had already lost Polities and just… SO MANY EMOTIONS 💔💔💔
@@Sarah-Has-Arrived Now imagine this. Odysseus closed his eyes when he saw Eurylocus coming at him. Meaning Odysseus never saw Eurylocus's final act of trying to save him. In his mind, the final act was trying to kill him.
I like how brings up Odysseus is the king of Ithaca(1:28). It adds an interesting fact to consider. Odysseus needs to get back to his kingdom. Should he sacrifices himself for the few men with him or think about all those back home that need their king?
"Captain?" "Remember how I told you NOT to open that bag? Remember when I told you NOT to eat those sheep? Remember the mutiny that happened like, three minutes ago? I do."
1:44 He got that dude right in the face! 😮 Love the way you made Zeus look in this, it really puts into perspective just how the gods are. Terrifying creatures who are to be feared and respected because they don't have to be nice.
Now tHIS! This was sad! THE FLASHBACK IN THE END OF POLITES AND EURYLOCHUS TOGETHER REALLY HIT HARD. ESPECIALLY SINCE ODYSSEUS WAS WATCHING THE LAST SURVIVING BEST FRIEND OF HIS BURN UP IN LIGHTNING
One person made Poseidon from water. You made Zeus from clouds. People like you are so incredibly creative and talented!!! Genius! And when he transformed into a lightning bird!🤯
I love how inhuman zeus looks here! The black eyes and glowing pupils, the ears, along with the way he melts in with clouds, not to mention the very interesting detail that others have pointed out of the barometric pressure, thats so creative! The thunder whip too!
Honestly, it's probably cause this is a game to him he wants to show ody that he doesn't need to hurt him to hurt him. At least that's my perception of it.
the end of Mutiny and then the beginning of Thunder Bringer is such "And then they all knew... they've done fucked up" it's CHEF'S KISS I also love how Jorge changed the "crew stupid for killing the cows, got themselves killed" to "crew stupid and got people killed but it's ODYSSEUS who actively chose his own live over them" it hurts SO WELL.
The crew killing the cows was actually a kind of interesting case, since in the myth they were stranded on that island for over a month after Scylla killed six of them; they agreed with Odysseus's decision to leave the cows alone but the gods changed the winds and wouldn't let them LEAVE and there's nothing else to eat. When the supplies ran out and the men started to starve, it became a question of calculated risk; Odysseus has gone to pray for some kind of mercy but the gods have not, to say the least, been particularly nice to Odysseus's shipmates in the last decade. When they make the decision to kill a cow, Odyssey's version of Eurylochus knows it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't decision, but if they eat something there is a chance they can make it home to Ithaca and make things right with Helios through sacrifice. In the likely event they're killed in divine retaliation for the transgression...Eurylochus and the others agree with starvation looming if the gods have decided they're gonna die then let's just fucking get it over with. I do like Epic's change to have Odysseus not get to be a bystander in the ultimate end of his crew, agreed!
THIS IS SO AWESOME WTH??? the composition, the designs, the ARTSTYLE??? so delicious i love how zeus’ arm band thingies have an eagle pattern and how he uses his lightning bolt as a whip?????
giving the gods clawed hands is SUCH a good touch ive already noticed you did that with athena in little wolf but thought its an owl thing, but it fits so well with the otherworldlyness and sets the gods even further apart from humans!
Absolutely adore the design choice of having Zeus' hair being like/made of clouds. Its a really neat touch, very appropriate considering his monniker of "cloud gatherer." Im surprised ive never seen it before.
GOD I can’t get enough of Zeus’s design. His demeanor is so….arrogant and like….opposing. Definitely very on point for Zeus. He is King of the Gods and of lightning he is definitely not a god you would want to piss off.
0:14 is is it just me, or does they ship look like an eye? Zeus manhandling a cloud lady is so on brand for him, and the way he is literally part of the clouds is awesome. The fact that he is constantly smiling throughout the whole song because this isn't a big deal to him, but it's a matter of life and death for them?!?! 1:07 not Eurylochus getting ready to throw hands, like sir, please, that's the king of the gods. Also, idk if this is an artistic choice or not, but I love how the crew actually looks like they haven't had anything to eat for a while. This is such a great animatic!
This is so damn good!!!!! You killed me with the end! SO here are details I loved! -Zeus lowering the atmospheric (is it atmospheric?) pressure when he says "apply all the pressure" was perfect! I could feel my ears ringing as if I had been there. -Zeus randomly hurting the crew, toying with them. -Zeus' hair as clouds? love it. Also him constantly shape-shifting when he was up in the clouds, sometimes taking a specific form, sometimes just being a cloud- love it, gives him versatility and him being the god of the sky, it makes so much sense. (unstable form just like his marriage) - Zeus lightning. Could write a whole essay on it. Loved it as a lazo/whip, bc it's electricity, you can't really have it contained, so what better way than to make it a whip out of nowhere to them come back to Zeus' hands, then disappear, then appear again as a staff, etc. Versatile like Zeus (mood) Zeus eyes, hello? they're so creepy. Also after Odysseus chooses to survive, his eyes shine just like Zeus -When Eurylochus says but then we'll die his expression is so good, he's like you're not seriously considering this, aren't you? -Also Eurylochus going for the sword the moment Zeus comes down, 100% something he would do (I̶ s̶a̶y̶ w̶e̶ s̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶ f̶i̶r̶s̶t̶ w̶e̶ d̶o̶n̶'̶t̶ h̶a̶v̶e̶ t̶i̶m̶e̶ t̶o̶ w̶a̶s̶t̶e̶ s̶o̶ l̶e̶t̶'̶s̶ r̶a̶i̶d̶ t̶h̶e̶ p̶l̶a̶c̶e̶ ) -Zeus playing with the cloud as if it was a woman, and then when he says where only i can undress her he vanishes the cloud, like he just "conquered" another damsel- bc yk he's a disgusting pig and his record is pretty damming- but it fits the character, so even if it makes me a little sick, it was a well done characterization -The way he appears, as if he's coming down to the ship like he were an angel os smth like that in 0:21 as if he were a "savior" to then stop and start mocking them. Dunno, maybe I'm over analyzing but I liked that detail -"her true nature will be revealed" and you put Eurylochus looking down, ashamed, bc he knows his pride (and hunger) is what got them there (as in Zeus in their ship specifically) - Why do I think they'll lose? Odysseus looks down ashamed bc he's already demonstrated he'll do whatever it takes to get home - Don't make me do this, Odysseus covers his whole face, except for one eye. Idk if it's a reference to the cyclops but- it's just one life to take, and when we kill him then our journey is over(like when he killed the baby) and now if he wants to get home, he has to choose between one life- his own- or the lives of his crew... but he's already become the monster (if I become the monster to everyone but us- maybe that us it's not longer for him and his crew, but for him and his family). Again maybe I'm reading too much into this but I can't stop my brain The crew realizing that they aren't getting out of there if they die they'll bring Odysseus down with them. -The Penelope illusion- yeah Zeus ain't playing fair (for the crew). Also Eurylochus looking angrily at Zeus when she appears -The haunted look on Odysseus- damn. Also the illusion vanishing to show Zeus with a face that screams "you want this? this was a sneak peak dude, want to get home, make the choice, prove to me that I was right and that you're as selfish as I am" -The eagle, love the eagle and the glowing wings; also how despite a lightning hit the ship right in front of Odysseus, yk that destructive force that you can't really control, it destroyed everything and killed everyone (turning them to ashes) but it simply threw Odysseus away - bc Zeus made sure he didn't die by *his* hands, he din't care if he drowned. Odysseus reflection on Eurylochus' sword, both of them crying broke me a little. Also him reaching out for Odysseus in his last moments while he turned to ashes, as if his captain could save him. AND THE MEMORIES, POLITES AND EURYLOCHUS BOTH SMILING AT ODYSSEUS, AND HE TRIES BUT CAN'T REACHT THEM- BRO THAT KILLED ME, I SWEAR I WAS NOT EXPECTING TO TEAR UP WITH THIS okey now I'm definitely reading too much into this but the last part of Eurylochus that vanishes looks like a bird in 3:52 okey now I think I've covered everything I wanted to say Love it
You definitely earned a subscriber for this one, this is absolutely incredible. That part at the end where Eurylochus disappears with the lightning is absolutely heartbreaking. Fantastic job ❤
I have rewatched this at least a dozen times since finding it- I absolutely love the way you’ve handled Zeus! My favorite design and use of Body language for him!
I can't tell if Eury was trying to reach for Odysseus (either to olead for help or drag him in with them) or shove him out of the way despite knowing that Zeus said he would spare his life, and thats destroying me actually. ALSO holy shit your art style??? The shapes??? I think I genuinely started whooping out loud when he turned into a bird and soared up into the sky to gather his (TRIDENT SHAPED LMAO) lightning. That shit was so badass it almost made me forget what he was going to do. Odysseus' eyes glowing yellow as if to signify both the illusion/manipulation of Zeus and what side he was going to choose. Ody seeing Eury and Polites at the end and reaching for them (PARALLELS). Your designs slap. The motion slaps. This is crazy good. Ow. This animatic hurts.
ODYSEEUS EYES TURNING YELLOW WHEN HE SAYS “I KNOW”. he looks like he is kinda being manipulated by Zeus, and is feeling no regret in his choice. awesome work!
God, Zeus' voice on that "Someone's gotta die today" line. Just smooth as butter. I could probably listen to that voice talk about literally anything and enjoy it lol.
I never thought anything could top Neal Illustrator's version, but here I am. I loved how dynamic you've made the movements. Everyone has already mentioned everything but I also think the imagery suggests Zeus changed himself/the lightning into Penelope like a siren. Cool detail.
This has me on tears, the expression of Ody when he has to choose, the fear in the faces of the crew at his silence.. the way they all desintegrated by lightning
Little notes I love: - Zeus using the clouds to appear as his typical depiction like "yes, bitches, it very much is I." - Zeus dropping the pressure when he descends onto the ship and hurting everyone's ears. Shows just how powerful his mere presence is and instantly makes him ten times more scary despite his almost human size. - Speaking of almost human, goddamn does Zeus look like some fantasy-esque creature in this and I love it! Gives him a big feeling of "otherness", like he's more monster than human. - Eury dodging the lightning whip leading to another getting hurt, portraying how he can't actually protect/lead them properly. - Zeus looking past Ody and at the crew at "since hunger was far too great" like "oh yeah, you guys aren't getting off scott free either, don't think you are." - Zeus picks up both Ody _and_ Eury and tosses them. Both are/were leaders of the crew, both were equally as stupid (at times), and both are gonna get punished for this shit. No favoritism. - Zeus raising his hand to the sky with his other hand on his heart, looking at the storm clouds like a lover. Love that expression, that emotion. Plus, almost feels like a respresentation of how enamoured he is with his position as king of the gods/god of the sky. - Ody visibly going mad as the realization that the crew he worked like hell to keep alive is all gonna get knocked out in one fell swoop _by his choice_ - Zeus looking down at Ody as the vision of Penelope fades away with that big, smug grin. Man just knows he's gotten exactly what he wants right then and there. - That _face_ Eury makes at "but we'll die". It looks like he's trying to smile, trying to laugh it off like his best friend is just joking and nah, they'll really all be fine. But at the same time he knows. He's already posing to fight. He knows. - "I know". Instant yellow eyes, like he's possessed. Like he's still seeing that vision of Penelope, because that's all he's thinking about right now is getting home to her. - The eagle imagery! Yes! I so rarely see this with him, and that ascending animation and the blast from it was so smooth! - The tears as Eury comes after Ody because that's his best friend, his brother in arms, and as pissed at him and as scared as he is, Ody's one of the last few things he's got left. - Eury either pushing or reaching out to Ody, either protecting him or wanting to hold onto him in his last moments. Shows how much he still cared. - The flashback. Ody reaching for the memory of them. Ow. That hurt my heart. That one's gonna leave a bruise. Overall an amazing animatic and probably my favorite. You're an amazing artist. Keep up the awesome work! Sorry this was long.
God damn I love how scummy Zeus looks in this animatic, pretending like the choice he is giving Odysseus is a gracious and magnanimous gift and just reveling in how scummy he is being.
i think what i love most is odyseus not reacting to his men attacking him, he understands that he kinda deserves it, and part of himregrets it, but hes still the man that became a monster to get home BEAUTIFUL!
Well in a sense.... WHY should he have his name introduced.... we KNOW who he is through the actions and song lyrics alone.... The King of Olympus. The Lord of Lightning. *The Thunder Bringer.*
Could just be shading, but "Penelope" totally looks like she's the siren, arrow wound included, and I enjoyed that. Appreciated how you have Zeus cutting into people and throwing them around, and slicing right next to Odysseus's jugular, really underlining how it's NOT a hypothetical question.
Your animation of Thunder Bringer is pure gold and your version of Zeus is the best one I’ve seen! This is how I will envision Zeus from now on. He is handsome and charming but at the same time intimidating with his otherworldly traits and whole arrogant demeanour, just perfect. And his hair and clothes ending in storm clouds is brilliant! Your animation for Odysseus and the crew are also amazing, perfectly capturing their emotions. I keep rewatching this over and over!
After seeing people make animations for this musical its become my current obsession as i was obsessed with greek mythology as a kid. I love seeing how creative people are and their interpretations of the gods. They look so good

That was so cold.
in most cases, Gods cant exert their full power without a mortal conduit, the eye glow is likely both a not so subtle clue that Odysseus is heeding the lesson of Poseidon, but also Zeus actively shielding and channeling his power through Odysseus to smite his crew.

The only times where Odysseus morally crossed the line so far were:
Polyphemus (since in canon it's confirmed he shot the sheep in Polyphemus' cave),
Remember Them (flat out lying to himself and the cyclops in saying he led with peace when he didn't, making the cyclops even more disdainful of what a human would call "peace". To say nothing of how he didn't kill the cyclops and crippled it instead, which was morally worse in ancient Greece)
and, Different Beast (when he brutally killed all the sirens. You can debate if killing the sirens was necessary, but what you can't debate is how Odysseus made their deaths as miserable as possible).
But I definitely see the future sagas, changing the number of times he crosses the line.
Eurylochus being ready to swing at Zeus is hilarious.

The part where Eurylochus is crying while swinging his blade is such a good attention to detail and makes this make a whole lot more sense ❤️🔥❤️🔥

+ Eurylechous just wanted to die by a god rather than starving

So glad you noticed the eagle patterns!!
giving the gods clawed hands is SUCH a good touch ive already noticed you did that with athena in little wolf but thought its an owl thing, but it fits so well with the otherworldlyness and sets the gods even further apart from humans!
The helplessness "....I know..." Gah, this musical is just legendary.
The ending where Odysseus was reaching for the happy times with Polites and Eurylechus HURT ME!
Bro, I'm actually bouta cry, I'm gonna miss Eurylochus, he was actually one of my favorite characters
Same! Now both my baes are gone! 😢
(unstable form just like his marriage)
- Zeus lightning. Could write a whole essay on it. Loved it as a lazo/whip, bc it's electricity, you can't really have it contained, so what better way than to make it a whip out of nowhere to them come back to Zeus' hands, then disappear, then appear again as a staff, etc. Versatile like Zeus (mood)
Zeus eyes, hello? they're so creepy. Also after Odysseus chooses to survive, his eyes shine just like Zeus
-When Eurylochus says but then we'll die his expression is so good, he's like you're not seriously considering this, aren't you?
-Also Eurylochus going for the sword the moment Zeus comes down, 100% something he would do (I̶ s̶a̶y̶ w̶e̶ s̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶ f̶i̶r̶s̶t̶ w̶e̶ d̶o̶n̶'̶t̶ h̶a̶v̶e̶ t̶i̶m̶e̶ t̶o̶ w̶a̶s̶t̶e̶ s̶o̶ l̶e̶t̶'̶s̶ r̶a̶i̶d̶ t̶h̶e̶ p̶l̶a̶c̶e̶ )
-Zeus playing with the cloud as if it was a woman, and then when he says where only i can undress her he vanishes the cloud, like he just "conquered" another damsel- bc yk he's a disgusting pig and his record is pretty damming- but it fits the character, so even if it makes me a little sick, it was a well done characterization
-The way he appears, as if he's coming down to the ship like he were an angel os smth like that in 0:21 as if he were a "savior" to then stop and start mocking them. Dunno, maybe I'm over analyzing but I liked that detail
-"her true nature will be revealed" and you put Eurylochus looking down, ashamed, bc he knows his pride (and hunger) is what got them there (as in Zeus in their ship specifically)
- Why do I think they'll lose? Odysseus looks down ashamed bc he's already demonstrated he'll do whatever it takes to get home
- Don't make me do this, Odysseus covers his whole face, except for one eye. Again maybe I'm reading too much into this but I can't stop my brain
The crew realizing that they aren't getting out of there if they die they'll bring Odysseus down with them.
-The Penelope illusion- yeah Zeus ain't playing fair (for the crew). Also Eurylochus looking angrily at Zeus when she appears
-The haunted look on Odysseus- damn. Also the illusion vanishing to show Zeus with a face that screams "you want this? this was a sneak peak dude, want to get home, make the choice, prove to me that I was right and that you're as selfish as I am"
-The eagle, love the eagle and the glowing wings; also how despite a lightning hit the ship right in front of Odysseus, yk that destructive force that you can't really control, it destroyed everything and killed everyone (turning them to ashes) but it simply threw Odysseus away - bc Zeus made sure he didn't die by *his* hands, he din't care if he drowned.
Odysseus reflection on Eurylochus' sword, both of them crying broke me a little. Also him reaching out for Odysseus in his last moments while he turned to ashes, as if his captain could save him. AND THE MEMORIES, POLITES AND EURYLOCHUS BOTH SMILING AT ODYSSEUS, AND HE TRIES BUT CAN'T REACHT THEM- BRO THAT KILLED ME, I SWEAR I WAS NOT EXPECTING TO TEAR UP WITH THIS
okey now I'm definitely reading too much into this but the last part of Eurylochus that vanishes looks like a bird in 3:52
okey now I think I've covered everything I wanted to say
Love it
You definitely earned a subscriber for this one, this is absolutely incredible. That part at the end where Eurylochus disappears with the lightning is absolutely heartbreaking. Fantastic job ❤
Aaah!! This animatic is amazing!! And Zeus design is really cool! Love it! 💙
ANNIII
Haha thanks! I love your animatics, can’t wait for ur full thunderbringer🫡🫡
I love those first moments of Zeus showing up. He is SO happy he gets to do this
HIM SEEING THE TWO OF THEM AT THE END SENT MY SOUL
I have rewatched this at least a dozen times since finding it- I absolutely love the way you’ve handled Zeus! My favorite design and use of Body language for him!
Oh Eury pushing Ody away makes this hit harder. He knew he screwed up, and whatever choice Ody made, he would support it.
@@Classicbutterscotch You picked up loads of my thought process! So glad you liked it🫡🫡
1:39 - animation of lightning as a whip - brilliant, very beautiful!!!
I was FLOORED by the shadow of him casted over the entire ship when the lighting striked.
2:52 “do you have any games on your phone?”
This is my favorite Thunder Bringer animatic, I love how it truly feels like Zeus is just toying with them
I never thought anything could top Neal Illustrator's version, but here I am. I loved how dynamic you've made the movements. Everyone has already mentioned everything but I also think the imagery suggests Zeus changed himself/the lightning into Penelope like a siren. Cool detail.
I beg you, please continue to do Epic animatics! Your art style is genuinely the most amazing I have ever seen!
This feels like watching Szin Hamilton animatics... missed this feeling SO SO much. Amazing job dude, I love it so much istg
@@cynamonowabueczka1332 I’m sorry this is the biggest fattest compliment you could give me for making these animatics😭🙏
2:36 ODYSSEUS' FACE??? HELLOOOOO STOOOOPPP 😭😭😭
This has me on tears, the expression of Ody when he has to choose, the fear in the faces of the crew at his silence.. the way they all desintegrated by lightning
Zeus hair and clothes being clouds is so badass, and a lightning whip?! Amazing character design!
Little notes I love:
- Zeus using the clouds to appear as his typical depiction like "yes, bitches, it very much is I."
- Zeus dropping the pressure when he descends onto the ship and hurting everyone's ears.
- Zeus looking past Ody and at the crew at "since hunger was far too great" like "oh yeah, you guys aren't getting off scott free either, don't think you are."
- Zeus picks up both Ody _and_ Eury and tosses them.
- Ody visibly going mad as the realization that the crew he worked like hell to keep alive is all gonna get knocked out in one fell swoop _by his choice_
- Zeus looking down at Ody as the vision of Penelope fades away with that big, smug grin.
Giving zeus a whip cause they leave a cracking/clapping sound like thunder is so SMART
i think what i love most is odyseus not reacting to his men attacking him, he understands that he kinda deserves it, and part of himregrets it, but hes still the man that became a monster to get home BEAUTIFUL!
Holy crap the expressions, Zeus's design, this is perfect!!
Zeus is the only god whos not been introduced by name through the entire epic the musical.
Well in a sense.... WHY should he have his name introduced.... we KNOW who he is through the actions and song lyrics alone.... The King of Olympus. The Lord of Lightning. *The Thunder Bringer.*
Eurylochus and Polites at the end??? Beautiful. I cried 🥲
2:39 so if this is actually Zeus-I want to see it w/out his Penelope appearance/hj
I feel sorry for the guy who got hit in the eye with a lightning, only to be eliminated a few minutes later-
Could just be shading, but "Penelope" totally looks like she's the siren, arrow wound included, and I enjoyed that.
They look so good
So are you paying for my therapy with the last few seconds you animated and shattered my heart?
This animatic is insane! It deserves so many more views! Gorgeous work!!
Menacing, cold, self obsessed, above all... love how you made Zeus look totally inhuman... and how broken the crew look... how broken ody is...
I love how instead of his wife and kid, he thinks about the friends he lost along the way, it;a actually way sadder
I love all the details of zeus "applying pressure" by affecting the atmosphere, dancing with the cloud, and using a lightning whip to make thunder. It's so good
4:00 I was not prepared for that😭
WHAT WHAT OMFG Okay, this one made me cry. This is the most emotional one I've seen. I adore your character designs and my GOD, the way you draw the eyes just *guts* me because they convey so much emotion every scene. Absolutely astonishing. Subscribed for sure.
