Most people don't realize how difficult this is to play. Bass in one hand piano in the other. Its borderline musical genius. Especially this song. Amazing
For a keyboard player with “classical training” and a love of the Blues it’s actually not that difficult and is hugely enjoyable to play. The “genius” was In Manzarek coming up with it in the first place. It’s hard to explain why it’s so good - there’s a simplicity combined with some sort of primal energy that just works. This goes for a lot of great music. I played keyboards in an amateur Doors tribute band in the early 90’s. Least mentioned Doors song that deserves more recognition: Peace Frog. There’s something very unique about The Doors and for me they were one of the best blues bands ever. I’ve no interest in the Jim Morrison idolisation, only the music. By the way, if you want to witness true technical genius watch/listen to Charlie Hunter play funky bass and guitar simultaneously on his hybrid guitar. It’s truly astonishing. I’d say near impossible…..and he plays as if it’s a walk in the park.
PLEASE! Do this cover again with modern recording equipment! I’ve been watching this video over and over again for 7 Years!! It’s the best on TH-cam! I can only imagine how much more amazing this would be with some proper Cameras or Mics!
The original recording of Light My Fire is slowed down in the album, but I noticed that here he even played the record at an slightly faster speed to compensate for the half tone difference! So this sounds just like The Doors must have sounded when it was recorded! What a treat to see this mate doing this bit!!! hats off. True dedication, devotion and talent. I'm seeing him doing something I've always dreamt doing just about every time I hear the song ever since I was a teenager.
Hey Joe, i think you hear the pitch difference. On the CD "The best of the Doors" (which i use here) they kept the original speed of Light my fire (It's in A originally) On most other commercial CD's they pitched song lower to Ab.
To me, that keyboard combo will always be the sound of the Doors. Although session men were brought in for several songs on the first album, the Fender Piano Bass was used on this cut, which was just backed up by Bruce Botnick in a recent Mojo issue. It's such an other-wordly sound; I was fascinated by it as a lad and still am today, and the Vox Continental's just the icing on the cake. Thanks so much for posting this!
The vintage organs just rock, but they don't rock as much as you. You are the man dude, you're in the freaking zone. I wish I could play a 1% as good as you play
you're a GENIUS !!!! everytime i listened to manzarek solo, i used to think "wow, nobody could play this so good, sound like him, by making the notes fly around your head before enter into it". but when i see (and listen of course) the way you do it... We're not worthy ! ^_^
Very cool that younger people dig the creative genius of music in an era where individuality, talent, and creativity usually trumped gimmickry. Most of the top rock bands of that era did not sound and look alike. These days...most of the pop stuff sounds the same as anything being put out by other bands. Nice vid and nice playing!
You've got it to perfection. Especially with the Vox, man... You even have the solo down perfectly. I'm guessing you transcribed it... Seeing as though there aren't any actual written solo's... well as far as I know at least. In any case, best TH-cam cover I have seen.
You mentioned Queensday in one of your videos, so I assume you're Dutch. Anyway, don't you hate it when on the radio they play the radio-edit with the very best part CUT OUT?! Playing both melody and baseline at the same time makes me cross-eyed! I always wondered how Ray Manzarek archived this, but apparently he's not the only one :) My guess: you're in a Doors tribute band. Otherwise: join one!
Oh man! I was always amazed at Ray playing the bass lines along with his keyboard solos and backing. You not only have the gear but know just what to do with it. Nice work!
Hey dude, EXCELLENT touch! I just LOVE the original Vox and Fender Rhodes Piano Bass instruments. --A former B3/Minimoog rock dude turned church pianist.
Incredible job, guy! Not only is it technically flawless but it also swings too...the vibe is right on. This should be a lesson to young musicians who are mostly interested just in how fast things can be played. This is a true musician.
A great cover of an amazing song. The best 'light my fire' cover i've seen on youtube. Slightly different from the original, but it is an excellent work!
Absolutely masterful. This is what TH-cam was designed for, truly. The organ solo was perfect, but you even nailed the noodling during Robby's solo--wow.
No the keyboard playing during robbys solo is completely off, its hard to hear on the original but 1 guy on youtube has it perfected so i learned it from him
You are so awesome. Just about note-perfect in all your vids. If you have the time - and the patience - I'd love to see you tackle one of their even-longer hits like "The End" or "When the Music's Over".
Hey Serenities! I love your videos. You are very talented. You must be still very busy with the tribute band, but I'd love to see more of these kinds of videos. :) Keep rockin' & rollin'!
Excellent playing and tone!!! great job. The best "Light my fire" cover on organ i've heard. You play in a Doors tribute band?? Congratulations. you're the best and you play like R.Manzarek.
Bravo. I've seen others that lpay the solo Ray did at the Hollywood Bowl, but this is the first one off the studio version. What an homage. I've been working on the song for ten years and will keep working on it until they tamp dirt on me. Best regards, Brian
Vintage combo organs are addictive. I have 3, Vox, Gibson and a Farfisa Compact. Serenities does these organs more justice than I do. Man, you've got some chops!
Wow! You sounds just like Manzarek! I'm trying to learn this song but I have a Hammond instead of a Vox. Does anyone know drawbar settings that sound like the Vox?
Nice Gibson G-101 compact organ in the background. Ray changed to this when the Italian made Vox Continentals kept crashing. Too bad, as in late 1967 Vox moved their production to the Sepulevda Blvd facility in Los Angeles, with upgraded maple keys and PNP rather than germanium transistors on the sound cards. I have one of these rare V-301H "Sepulvedas", with the Fender Rhodes piano bass. You can see the pair in the Oliver Stone movie "the Doors". Yep, that's them.
Hi there, what is the real gift: the instruments or the skills ? I am a drummer for ever since, and I play the keys only for fun and am self-tought. But I can see that you are playing professionally. And you play with soul, you know what you do. You would bring any keys to life... Thank you so much for sharing these amazing vids. To return to your instruments: they sound amazing and complement your great playing. Keep your eyes open and your fingers busy;) Best regards from Germany, Martin
Most people don't realize how difficult this is to play. Bass in one hand piano in the other. Its borderline musical genius. Especially this song. Amazing
I think the Howard Keyboard made the combo as to eliminate the inconvenient Fender Rhodes Bass piano on top of the Vox Continental organ.

Thank you all for the great comments! I really enjoyed playing this piece.

In terms of accuracy to the original its not the best, but i own both of these instruments i should upload a cover
I uploaded the short version
Ray Manzarek is dead so rest in eternal peace, but new Ray Manzarek is born and I'm glad :) Excelent playing ! my unknown friend !
All hail, Ray 2.0 :)
I don't do drugs but i swear i was higher than an airplane when i was watching you play that solo.
My god ikr!
Eight Miles High?
Yeah, it was stranger than Known.
😆
Who's going to 'thumbs down' this for fuck's sake?

Theres a volatile combination of jealous and moronic people out there, unfortunately.

this should have 10 million views. well done
Dude, it sound exactly like the original! Great job man!

amazing! this guy playes this flawless and without missing a single key.
When you can duplicate Rays playing as good as this , it makes all the time you spent practicing worth it ..Great Job Man !!
Are you Ray returned to us? :D
The vintage organs just rock, but they don't rock as much as you. You are the man dude, you're in the freaking zone. I wish I could play a 1% as good as you play
Very talented and enjoyable to listen to you play - I wish I could play this song just as well.
you're a GENIUS !!!! everytime i listened to manzarek solo, i used to think "wow, nobody could play this so good, sound like him, by making the notes fly around your head before enter into it". but when i see (and listen of course) the way you do it...

Dude this is friggin amazing........ I'm so jealous that you actually have a vox and Fender Rhodes piano bass! Speechless this is just epic!
Nailed it !! You even look like Ray.
Awesome job! Sounds just like the original! Even the solo is SPOT ON! Super nice flow :)
You've got it to perfection. Especially with the Vox, man... You even have the solo down perfectly. I'm guessing you transcribed it... Seeing as though there aren't any actual written solo's... well as far as I know at least. In any case, best TH-cam cover I have seen.
Excelente e impresionante interpretación, no lo hubiera sido tanto sin esos teclados de excelente sonido y calidad... Felicidades!!!

you've got to FEEL the music to do this....JUST AMAZING! Congratulations!
Oh man!
I was always amazed at Ray playing the bass lines along with his keyboard solos and backing.
You not only have the gear but know just what to do with it.
Nice work!
Who is this guy? This is so out of this world!
Absolutely completely and totally awsome. Complete, total, genuine, crystal, perfection.
Absolutely amazing man, you do the Doors justice with your playing. I think Ray would be proud
Its a good cover, but some parts are not accurate to the original song
Thanks for your kind words!
Perfect songs need perfect covers. Bravo!
This is just a great idea, well done, and of course well played! We can go back in time and visualize how it was done, in fact!
this makes me so happy.

I'm a Hammond, Mellotron guy. It's great to see someone who knows how to rock the old boards.

I have no idea how anyone can disassociate their hands like that. You have a skill, for sure.
Hello Colin, yes, mine is the UK version with wooden keys. Very great that you're a Vox owner now aswell. Post some videos!

Ray & Jim would be proud! AWESOME job.

Totally correct! :-)
You brought Jim from the dead with that!!
