I really loved this reaction, got chills watching this. Jonghyun was only 18 in this when they debuted, and he was belting these notes out. I don’t think many rookies these days (or ever), could match his standard. He is one of those rare performers who used their voices as an instrument, he always sounds different in every song, even within a song he would be switching up his vocals to add texture to the piece where required. He was just so so talented, and i really miss him a lot. Jonghyun was very inspired by Prince and MJ as well, and when you experience his solo work you will find that.
I think treasure's Yedam is one of the only ones to be this good in his debut vocally.
He definitely had a legendary type of vocal! They went crazy on that song!
I first heard his voice from the drama “city hunter”. I thoughts the OST was sang by a mature professional singer. He just sounded full of emotions which I had never heard in an OST before. I’ve seen very professional and talented young singers but they are still getting the critics as “showing off skills, lack of emotions “. But Jonghyun at 18 was already at artist level.
SHINee have very interestingly diverse solo careers as well - you can really tell from their solo work and individual personalities how they are fundamentally so different and have different tastes but they come together so perfectly. They are really a miracle group, i have personally never come across this in any other group so far. I think you’d really enjoy jonghyun’s solo work (think soul/jazz/funk), and key’s solo work (edm, 80s synthwave) as well, please consider giving it a go!

I call them the unicorns, because each of them has an amazing distinctive vocal but together they blend perfectly, and they have no bad song, not even one!

Baby SHINee!!! Taemin was only 14 at this time, Key and Minho at 16, while Jonghyun and Onew at 18. Really iconic. They're known for their live vocals, singing live since debut even during rehearsals that other artists both older and younger go to their rehearsals to watch.
Taemin didn't have a solo line in this song, as his voice wasn't very stable yet due to puberty. Some even said he was tone deaf. He really had to work hard to improve and even trained by his SHINee members. Another reason to love them.
SHINee is experimental with music. You'll always find something different. I also suggest watching their live stages like Excuse Me Miss (SWC4), Sherlock (SWC4) and Everybody from Tokyo Dome. Thing is in fact JONGHYUN got casted for his visuals while playing Bassist in a school band fest, they hit the jackpot, he’s got THE VOCALS!; ONEW (leader) performed at a showcase, SM ent owner saw him, made him audition (sing) on the spot, signed contract next day.
Yeah he was definitely serving vocals and visuals FOR DAYS!
They were all so cute back then... Maknae Taemin with his bowl cut and big smile was only 14! Thanks for this reaction, I love seeing new reactors trying out SHINee's music. I also love how you described their sound and I agree. Their music doesn't make you feel like it is "great Kpop", rather it's just "great music", period, which makes even more sense because they experiment with a ton of different genres and are always reinventing themselves while still keeping that intrinsic SHINee sound. Replay is just a legendary song so you picked an excellent place to start. I hope you'll keeping following this SHINee rabbit hole. I'd recommend "Excuse Me Miss" live performance for more R&B from them, "Everybody" for dubstep, "Your Number" for a catchy song with great choreo (make sure you do the black and white dance mv for this)... in fact, just go to the SHINee TH-cam channel and find their playlist for MVs and just pick any of them. Also make sure you try out their live performances because they are powerhouses when it comes to charisma and stage presence. SHINee consistently puts out hits and have never disappointed me. I hope you try out more and enjoy it!

SHINee's "Replay" isn't just nostalgic, you're right, it's legendary. And SHINee are legends. Every new rookie group in the industry has covered "Replay" at least once in their career and it's one of those songs that is pretty much compulsory for everyone to know and learn, even still today.
The Noona (the older girl SHINee have a crush on that they are singing to) in the "Replay" MV is the leader of their sister group***, Victoria from F(x). This MV came out more than a year before F(X) debuted so this was Victoria even before debut. (Funny thing is, Victoria is native Chinese and she says she was still learning Korean during this time and she could barely even say SHINee.) Victoria was so perfect in this role because she is a few years older than any of the SHINee members so she fit well as the lead actress in this MV. As the song says, 'Noona neomu yeppeo .... replay, replay, replay ...." In other words they are saying "pretty older woman I really like you and I think you like me too ... every time I see you I need a replay of the moment over and over again in my head." Noona neomu yeppeo is a Korean term that essentially means "Pretty older woman" Noona neomu yeppeo is a term that is only used by guys to describe a beautiful woman that is older than them. There really isn't a literal translation of the term so that is why the song is called "Replay" in English. But in Korean it is called "Noona neomu yeppeo." That's why if you watch SHINee on a lot of variety shows and TV programs, the older women in the show often ask SHINee to sing this song to them.
***** SHINee and F(x) are both SM Entertainment groups, they debuted within a year of each other, they both are 5 member groups (Now 4 member groups ;( ) and they have similar music styles and concepts, etc. F(x) is pretty much the female version of SHINee.
"Replay" actually came out in 2008 -- more than 13 years ago -- however, SM launched their new TH-cam channel in 2011 and reuploaded all their older videos at that time. So all of their older MVs and content will have a 2011 date but, like "Replay," they actually may be from much earlier.
"Replay" is literally considered one of the best debut songs of all time for any Kpop artist because it's so timeless and it never goes out of style or sounds outdated no matter how old it gets. And this is why SHINee are Icons. This song makes all the women swoon.
You just witnessed baby SHINee and were already blown away, just imagine what it will be like as you continue your journey through their discography and MVs. They have 13 full-length albums (7 Korean albums and 6 Japanese albums), several repackaged albums, a multitude of mini albums, numerous OSTS, they each have solo songs and albums and there are hundreds of live performances that will absolutely leave you speechless with their talent. And it only gets more and more impressive as you follow them through their career. They have accomplished a lot in the past 13+ years and they are one of the groups that made Kpop what it is today.
SHINee are one of the most iconic and influential groups as trendsetters. This song was way ahead of its time when it first came out. SHINee are known for never being afraid to experiment with their style and sound in a song and for the fact that no two songs of theirs will ever be the same even on the same album. SHINee are always setting trends, never following them. As SM's experimental boy group, nothing you hear from SHINee will ever sound the same, and, yet, somehow it will always sound like SHINee. So this shows just how talented even as teenagers SHINee were. If you want to see where SHINee truly shines you have to watch their live concert performances.
Fun fact: SM originally wanted to make SHINee a hip-hop group. Hip-hop was the style of music that was really popular when they debuted. That's why Key and Minho are both rappers and how Taemin started out as a popper in dance. But as Key tells it, they just didn't have the swag to pull of hip-hop, so SM switched up their sound and style to something that fit them better and they came up with the signature classic SHINee R&B vocals they are now known for. I, for one, am so glad they debuted with their signature R&B style instead of hip-hop. I can't imagine the world if we never knew the amazing vocals and sound that is SHINee today. Things would be so different.
So SHINee are part of the second generation of Kpop and yet the members are younger than most everyone in their generation and are the same age or even younger than some members of groups who came after them, such as EXO and BTS, etc., which are part of Kpop's third generation. SHINee debuted young and have the experience of seasoned veterans. It just goes to show you why they are legends in the industry.
When SHINee debuted Onew (the leader and lead vocalist) was 18, Jonghyun (the main vocalist and songwriter) had just turned 18, Minho (the main rapper and sub-vocalist) and Key (lead vocalist and sub-rapper) were 16 and Taemin (Main dancer and lead vocalist) was 14, so now they are all in their late 20s and early 30s. (Onew turned 32 in December.) SHINee are some of the most well respected artists in the industry.
Onew (Pronounced Oh-New, real name Lee JinKi) -- the one in the hat -- is the leader of the group and he has one of the most unique and best voices in the industry. (Onew means, or sounds like, the Korean words for soft or gentle, so he was given his stage name because he has a very calm and gentle personality.) His vocals are unmatched. He even holds the record (40+ seconds) for the longest continuous note without changing tone or pitch, etc.
Jonghyun -- the one with the headphones that you see first -- is known as one of the best vocalist in Kpop who was one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. Jonghyun wrote and composed almost 40% of SHINee's songs, plus he wrote all of his own solo songs and numerous songs for other artists, such as EXO's "Playboy" and songs for Taemin, IU and Lee HI, etc. He was one of the only SM artists to be given complete artistic control over his work, including several of SHINee's song selections. SM knew that if Jonghyun was involved in any way that the song would be a hit. He was extremely respected within the industry as a songwriter, composer and singer. He was one of the very first Idols to be known for this songwriting and composing skills, and he was the first of SM's artists to have a fully self-wrote album. As the main vocalist, Jonghyun is the one you hear with all the amazing high notes and R&B runs and ad libs most of the time.
Key -- the one in green -- is our fashionista of the group who is SHINee's stylist for a lot of their MVs and stage outfits. SHINee are known for setting trends and never being afraid to experiment with their sound or look, so Key is known for really paying attention to detail when it comes to fashion. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. He is an amazing singer and is a sub-rapper in the group. He is also known as SHINee's dance copy machine. Key has the ability to see and remember choreography the fastest in the group. He only needs to watch the dance once and he has it memorized. He is also SHINee's fluent English speaker, and he is almost as good as a native speaker.
Minho -- the one playing basketball -- is the main rapper and visual of the group, but his vocals are also some of the best in the industry. Minho sings just as much as he raps. He also writes most of his own raps in SHINee's songs. Minho is one of the top actors in the industry and he has starred in numerous dramas and movies. Minho is also known as a top athlete. He says these days he goes to the gym a couple of times a day to work out just because he likes to work out, but he is also crazy about soccer, and he plays basketball, baseball and golf, and he is good at track and field events, etc., as well. And not only does he enjoy playing all those sports, but he is usually the best athlete on the field and he pretty much wins every time. There is a reason why Minho's nickname is "Flaming Charisma," and one reason is for his intense passion for sports and his need to always win.
And, as you know, Taemin -- the one in yellow -- is considered one of THE BEST dancers in the industry, and that's not just by fans but by everyone in the industry, including his peers. Taemin's nickname is the Korean Michael Jackson. As you can see by their "Replay" MV, even at 14, Taemin was one of the best dancers in the industry, and you will soon discover with the more that you watch from SHINee and Taemin's solo work, that he has only gotten more magnificent over the years. Taemin is also one of the most popular solo artists in the industry and he is a member of the Kpop supergroup SuperM. Taemin truly is art when it comes to his performances.
SHINee are one of the top groups that are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They are a group of 5 amazing vocalists, 5 impressive dancers, 5 visuals, 5 rappers, 5 top actors, and 5 of the most talented and unique voices in all of Kpop. The industry looks to SHINee to show them what the next song style and dance trend will be. And it is said that within 3 months of SHINee releasing their new song and choreography, you will see that same sound and style being duplicated across the industry with every comeback to follow from both boy groups and girl groups. When SHINee does something the industry takes note and follows suit. SHINee has started the trend with almost everything -- with every one of their songs to their dances to clothing trends, to live performances, to the way Kpop is promoted -- there is almost nothing that can't be attributed to something SHINee has been involved in.

SHINee are known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. It's a running joke between the fans and the members that when SHINee lip syncs you can tell because it's very obvious. Yes, over the years they have become better at lip syncing then they used to be, but now they have gained the reputation as the group that always sings live, so unless they are required to lip sync for a specific reason, what you will hear is live vocals. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography. SHINee set the standard. That is why they are so highly respected among their peers. It is literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard all other groups strive to reach.
You really should check out some of their live concert performances because their stages are like none other. Their concerts last 3 to 4 hours straight and they perform nonstop and never sound out of tune or out of breath. They are also one of the best dancers in Kpop and they have some of the best harmonies you will ever hear. SHINee live is on a whole other level.
You know EXO, so you know how good of vocalists they are, well, the members of SHINee actually were mentors to a lot of the EXO members and they helped coach them in their singing. The members of EXO and the members of SHINee are all around the same age and they were all part of the same trainee classes together, and, yet, SHINee debuted 4 years before EXO, so that just goes to show you a little bit of what makes SHINee so amazing and why they are considered legends.
Even as rookies Jonghyun and Onew were so highly respected for their vocal talent that industry experts considered them some of the best vocalists in Kpop, and now after more than 13 years, they are still among the top vocalists that all other singers are measured against.

I love this! Watching someone watch Replay for the first time makes me feel like I'm watching it for the first time again. I've been a Shawol for over 10 years (and I'm 51). I love every single member for everything they bring. They work hard, like really hard, and deliver the best live performances. I love lots of other K-Pop, K-RNB and K-Rap groups and performers, but no one has my heart like SHINee (GOT7 is close)! I'll be interested to see your journey in discovering them and their solo works. Always Five!

Really enjoyed the reaction bruh! As a long time Jonghyun fan (even before I became a fan of Shinee) it means a lot to see people still appreciate him for what he brought to the table. You are right on with your comments about all of the members. 😊 I felt the same way after watching their debut 4 years ago. It's taken me that long to catch on everything they've done since they debuted in 2008 (a loyal Shawol!!). Excuse me Miss (live performance) is one of my faves of SHINee, also, Ring Ding Dong, Lucifer, Sherlock, View (some of their older vids- live performances) and a few of my fav more recent vids are Marry you, Don't Call Me, Atlantis and ALL of their ballads are off-top for sure!! I especially like them because they always sing live and they've used live bands in concerts which is rare in Kpop. You have lots to watch but take your time. Oh...and don't forget to circle back to Taemin; I'm so hooked on him probably because I'm also a Michael Jackson/Prince fan so Taemin's dance moves and voice reminds me of them. I believe Taemin is the best solo artist in Kpop; hands down, especially in dance, voice, artistry and creativy. You can see his influence on many of the younger generation Kpop groups who look up to him. Before Advice, there's IDEA, Criminal, Want, Danger, Move, Press Your Number (this whole album freak'n rocks) to mention a few and my favorite live performance of his is SEXUALITY (live performance in at Budokan, Japan..here's the link: th-cam.com/video/QREEadmNDzQ/w-d-xo.html).

I remember it like it was yesterday. I accidentally clicked on this mv and I got hooked. I loved their dancing and Jonghyun's voice was phenomal. This is what made me start listening to kpop back in 2008. And although my actual favourite kpop group (tvxq) will probably always be my all time favourite, I SHINee holds a special place in my heart. I'm glad I got to see them all together a few times. The first time I heard replay live in like 2011 really gave me goosebumps and made me teary just because it was my first time with kpop
I felt like I had grown up listening to them when I heard this song even though I had never heard it before😭the nostalgia!
Key and Jonghyun both are amazing soloist too. Key’s latest album Bad Love is just perfect! Pretty much anything anyone in SHINee does is just golden. They are all so talented. Onew’s voice is so beautiful and unique. He did a short cover of a song called Just Once that is breathtaking.

Great seeing Shinee as babies. what's funny to me is almost all of them look shorter and/or younger than the girl in the video. Jonghyun's adlibs are beautiful, Onew also has a very beautiful and stable voice. If you're interested, you could look at some of their later live performances of Replay, after they have improved a lot. Amazing to see their growth (especially Taemin, he has grown up a lot).

Great job on the name pronunciations as well. Many new reactors just completely ignore the 2 E's and don't even try by just saying "shine" instead of "shiny" or even somehow misreading "TAEMIN" as "tea-min" like ?????. The first way that you pronounced JONGHYUN was perfectly passable, but just emphasizing the "H" a little more is the final step- kinda like in the goofy chuckle "hyuck hyuck"
KEY is indeed a staple figure on variety shows in the South Korean entertainment industry. He's currently a fixed cast member on 2 of the biggest shows there called "Amazing Saturday" where they guess song lyrics and "I Live Alone" where they follow the daily lives of celebrities
Also holy shit, excellent job on the instant facial recognition without much pre-memorization, dude LOL they were all 14-18 at debut and now Taemin's edging on his 30's already 💀
For good reference that I always like to mentally note: if Taemin is the legendary Michael Jackson of K-Pop, then SHINee is the classic Jackson 5 in that respect as well- except all 5 members are front and center on the same all-star level too instead of 4/5 just being background accessories to the centerpiece. They're a golden standard in their industry who are considered "the country's most precious group" by Koreans, a top role model for pretty much all junior idols, and even a major leading inspiration for peers and senior artists as well.
Replay is additionally upheld as the best debut song in all of K-Pop by many because it was just purely wholesome and doing its' own thing, meanwhile so many new idol groups today are just debuting with tracks that are trying too hard to make an impact by already sounding like COMEBACK songs that follow up on and go into trends or whatnot. I've been in the K-Pop game for like 12 years now and I've yet to see any other group sing/perform their debut song again and again over the years as much as SHINee, and they always do so very lovingly because the members all sincerely adore the song and the fans view it as a true gift as well each time. The members regularly sing it alone at their individual solo concerts too so that goes to show even more. The song's also still as relevant as ever, being brought up in the industry so much last year and this year on the same level as new songs. Because of the Korean line/title in it of "noona (older sister/girl, you're so pretty" it's also like a staple meme used in every fansign/fanmeeting event these days by other male idol groups because female fans ask them to sing it lmao

i do want to thank you for your comments about jonghyun though (and yes, you were saying it fine - the 'hyun' part has an "uh" sound rather than an "oo" sound). i've seen a lot of first time reactors kind of avoid talking about him much, and i'm sure they're just trying to be sensitive and not bring up any hurtful feelings for fans. but he was so tremendously talented, and just speaking for myself, i love seeing him get his recognition and his shine. he deserves it😊

Warching you watching this almost brought me to tears 😢 i liked Jonghyun so much. His passing broke my heart along with so many. He was pivotal to Shinee. You should watch their live performance of " Excuse Me Miss" The way Taemin and Jonghyun vibe in that performance is iconic! You should also listen to Jonghyun's solo work. His song titled Moon reminds me of a song Prince would have song.
He definitely has that prince type of aura about him.
You should definitely listen to some of JongHyun's solo albums. JongHyun album titled The Story OP.1 is beautiful and the song Moon that I mentioned is from his solo album titled She Is. Shinee were really just a bunch of teenagers singing and dancing like their rent was due and coming out with a whole hit! Taemin was only 14 years old at the time. Key and Minho only 16 and Jonghyun and Onew only 17/18! Jongyung already with his legendary vocals and Onew/Key were slaying as well. You could already see Taemin's potential as a dancer and him and Minho worked so hard on their voices over the years that Shinee ended up with 5 SINGERS in the end ♥️ Love that for them. (Taemin actually has my all time fave voice) Can't wait to follow your journey to discover more of them!
