The Electribe 2 is an extraordinary machine ! And what is great about it is the limitations. It obliged me to think differently as with the emx and I am more than grateful for that. As many, after exploring and mastering the E2 , I hope to jump onto a more powerful E3 in the future.
That's a positive outlook! I like that, some positivity for a change. That's exactly how I feel about the Octatrack: limited as hell and inspiring at the same time.
i Agree..I have the EMx for 2 years now, it pissed me off so many times but made me think differently and smart.I was so stuborn i didnt buy any other drum sequenser device and wanted to master it.eventually i leared alot and moved on to the ES2 , jumping for one device to the other in the beggining i was like ..WFT did they do? but i love this mashine and it limitations .onece you undestand it you get beats down in seconds..
What do you mean by assigning global parameters to a single track? Does that just mean that you can either have the global effects setting like a wet reverb on or off on each track/pad?
The Electribe 2 have one unique feature, that a lot of other machines don´t have: You can save each pad as an wave-file! With that option you don´t have to bother about latency at all. Simply design your sounds/tracks, export it as wavefiles on the sd-card and put it in your daw. With that possibility you can make a track, song, sound whatever you like and thanks to the batterypower you can used it wherever you want. I use that feature every time. I make mostly the drum and percussion sounds and put the the waves into the daw for eq and compression. Bass and Pads-Sounds are mostly live recorded. If you use it that way you also don´t have to mess around with voice stealing.
I'd have to agree that it's pretty cool that you can export the tracks. The downside is that you have to use the E2 internal sequencer that I'm not a fan of. But, when it comes to value for money the E2 is truly awesome and if you export your files later into a daw you can finally put some proper reverb on them :)
The decay/release knob almost drew me insane, because I took for granted that no one in their right mind would build it like that. Kept trawling the internet, reading the manual (which is a joke) multiple times and also tried what I considered being logical ways to adjust one but not the other, holding shift while rotating the knob and such. Then I came to realise that it is actually true; they really built it that way! Madness! :)
Yeah, and apparently there's a workaround to use the LFO as an attack envelope; and I'm only asking why :) Well, it's a done deal by now: sold mine ages ago; and recently I had one back in the studio for the weekend: didn't miss it one bit.
I've been thinking of buying an E2 to use as my main MIDI sequencer... do you think it would perform well sequencing multiple synths using the MIDI output (and a MIDI splitter)? Thanks in advance.
As long as you don't want to use two tracks to sequence one synth (the hardwired midi) it could do well. Keep in mind its 4 bar (64 steps) limitation, though. Honestly I haven't explored the MIDI sequencer functionality in depth as I'm mostly using the Octatrack as my primary sequencer.
LOL I was waiting for the "No reverb per part". Biggest annoyance for me personally. I do think the XY Pad should have been at least made able to allow you to control the intensity of Reverb as well as Low Pass/High pass Filters, Phasers and what not. And even the MFX reverb sucks, I have to use external one.
he is right about the midi. I have the e2 and some older Roland(mc909 and sp808) gear and they do not play well together. My main issue with the E2 is that it constantly sends out a midi play signal when I only want it to send midi clock. So when I hit play on the E2 it starts the seq on the 909 not really a big deal because now I am seeing a benefit from this but I do wish I could control what it sends out.
but this issue only takes place when you are sending midi from the Electribe to the rest of the gear right? If its at the end of the chain, being sequenced by a digitakt, will I have any MIDI limitation?
the issue is with the Roland more. they just completly blew the midi on the mc 303 / 505 / 909 / sp808. that's 75% the reason people hate them these days.
Hey Sabino! My english is not that good but ill try my best, so i you want to sync (midi) you need a midi in on you other device, en connect that with the midi out on your electribe, you need to go to global settings (i think, its somewhere in the settings) and look for clock mode, switch internal -> to auto & put on external mode. Oh and don’t forget to connect an aux from your other device output to the korg audio in, hope this works! Have a blessed day
I agree, I had mine for a few weeks expecting something awesome, sold it not long after and now use my EMX-1 instead which is a far better machine in my opinion. The synth options were limited, the menu diving drove me insane.. it really is a poor product compared to its predecessor.
Having worked with drum machine style song building (BOSS DR 880 and Zoom 123,224 series) I really dislike the chain mode feature for song mode. If you have long complex songs with some parts that don’t repeat it makes things complicated. Otherwise I like it for my first sampler.
Trash for writing proper songs with chord progressions that are longer than four bars and might need natural unquantized rhythms. A battery operated toy for playing around.
For the money, it's awesome. Especially that--as opposed to the EMX / ESX series which has been appreciating in value, the E2's will probably depreciate quite rapidly in the near future. I'm just only frustrated with the CPU / Software limitations, e.g. assigning MIDI channels, as it seems to be just a lazy development process, which is quite shocking for KORG which I usually associate with deep and well thought-out devices.
Yeah i agree there are some frustrating limitations. For some reason i keep coming back to mine. I think its the play-ability. I hope they do a EMX Pro or EMX3 at some point but until then i'll make do with this one.
The playability is amazing and it's probably the best piece of gear for playing live with a band: it's small and portable, battery operated and can create a multitude of sounds (I'd say that even the electric piano is passable in a live situation). I bought it primarily to play in a two-piece with a drummer in a setup of: E2 + iPad (synced via USB out on E2) + Korg Volca Keys serving as a midi-syncable metronome for the drummer. The only additional thing you can wish for is a separate output to use external effects.
Per-part MFX send *level* (rather than just on or off) would be a great improvement. The other things are annoying but there are workarounds. I tend to use sync in (from a Volca sync out) and have everything sequenced internally so don't have the problem with channels playing unwanted notes from other devices. But yes a per-part MIDI rX on /off would make total sense. Is this all with the firmware V2? I've only just bought an Electribe (pre-owned) so haven't had chance to investigate these things.
I sold mine a while back, so I'm not really up to date on new software releases, but I doubt they have added any meaningful features. It's great that almost every issue I mention here has a workaround (except for lack of midi thru), but it's annoying that they're needed in a digital synth. I'm trying to stay positive in the comments, though, because people get really triggered by this video :)
I have owned mine for just 24 hours so I am definitely trying to stay positive! :) I guess the thing with MFX is that the whole signal (part/channel) is routed to MFX, it's not an aux send bus like you would typically have. So for that reason it has to be 100%. One option is to duplicate the part and have one send to MFX and one not (and change levels) though with some of the MFX you might get phasing depending on what the sound is. So far I am loving the device - I have the sampler version and want to use it primarily with samples.
It's a cool box, so you'll have plenty of reasons to stay positive. Actually, I'm publishing a new E2 video on Monday. Had one at home for a week and decided to record something new with it :)
well it's a love - hate relationship, I know. I sold my E2 and kept the EMX, but now that the E2 is gone (in favour of the splendid Analog Keys) I kinda miss it for it's portability using batteries, ease of use, and the way to just do a quick jam on the couch... The step edit, fixed midi and effects are indeed limiting and sometimes anoying, but still for the price range this machine is a wonderfull piece of gear. So I might end up buying an E2 or E2S back second hand just for the reasons mentioned before... Just try to enjoy the positive side of the E2 and supplement it's shortcommings with other gear😆
I see where you're coming from. I'm going on holiday next week and I'd love to have a portable, battery operated piece of gear to take out with me and jam. Sadly, I sold my unit a way back. But then again that would probably be the extent to which I'd use the E2: jamming on holiday :)
I have an E2S and for sampling, it is near impossible to use. Stay with the E2. you get more filters with it. Sampling on the E2S is a royal pain in the ass. Not intuitive at all... It is a shame you cant just jack it into a computer via usb and push and pull samples from it, but Korg thinks the only computer out there is an Apple which is ridiculous. I have many Korg products but their affinity for Apple really pisses me off.
It is a nice machine, what annoys me is that you have to save the pattern, export all pattern and export all samples all the time. What would be wrong with a ONE dedicated save button? And why can't you turn the quantising off? Apart from this the 'Tribe is not too far away from a classic MPC3000 (1994 classic, but beats the 'Tribe with 32 note polyphony vs 24!).
hi there, many things I'd like to know about this device are about how to import samples (mono samples) in it, how long can the samples be? , how many letters can I use to name the samples ? If I go into the menu to select a sample in the sd card, is it easy to attribute to a pad and fast to load it?? Many thanks for your answers.
Hey! Thanks for watching. I'd love to be able to answer your questions, but this video is about an Electribe 2 Synthesizer/Workstation (E2), not the Electribe 2 Sampler (E2s). Unfortunately, I haven't owned or even touched the E2S, so I can't really address that question. Maybe you can try the Electribe E2 facebook group? They're pretty helpful as long as you're not criticizing the device :P
I have an E2S and I never sample with it. It is so unintuitive and stupid. I just dont like the way it works. Its very difficult to figure out anything on the stupid LCD screen. If I could do the editing and stuff in a computer (not an apple) and push it to the E2S that would be great, but Korg doesn't recognize a PC as a computer.... Just Apple.
The big dealbreaker for me is that you can't turn quantisation off. But thanks for listing 4 more stupid things about this machine that could easily be fixed with a software update!
Thanks for watching! I was actually never using that built-in sequencer and instead sequencing the E2 from my Octatrack. At the beginning, people were asking which one is better E2 or Novation Circuit and I guess right now, there's no question that the Novation has left the E2 in the dust with all of its software updates.
Well, the big plus on the Electribe 2 is the Pattern Chain that allows you to write full songs. The Circuit cannot do that yet. As an instrumentalist who wants to bring a machine on stage and have a "press play and forget" mentality, that is a real plus in favor of the Electribe.
Not being able to turn quantisation off is the most nonmusical limitation on this thing. I could live with the four bar limitation if I could at least make an actual groove but I can't so this thing is basically a silly toy. Needed to vent. It could be so useful with a few easy software tweaks
What do you use for sampling.? Say you want to sample a portion of a song for an intro, a verse, and a chorus to play back later like an MC (if you don’t want to play all parts in a live show)? What would you recommend?
Hey! Thanks for watching! I own the Octatrack, but I usually only sample guitars and synths into it. For vocal sampling, I usually go with my iPad and use either the Samplr app or NanoStudio: I just find the touch surface more expressive on the Ipad than on any other hardware sampler.
I worked around the missing MIDI Thru with a RetroKit RK004 Midi Splitter/Merger (look it up it's actually a crazy great tool with many more tricks) and it works great!
I use my iConnect Midi 4+ for this purpose: it's honestly the best piece of hardware I own. I'd love to make a comparison video sometime in the future.
Yeah only heard good things about the iConnect Midi... My current MIDI setup allows me to use the electribe 2 to sequence my other gear with it and "play through" it using my Keystep :) Oh and I don't need any computer for it. Anyhow, good video I agree with you on the E2 flaws. It still is a pretty good 16 track sequencer and pretty cheap on the second hand market... It's really not bad once you know it's flaws and kinks :)
Yeah, on a value for money basis, the E2 is awesome. I really think that if they designed it to have both DSP and sampling in one device, it would have been a humongous success. Check out my video on ICM4+, it doesn't require a computer and does a million things! Thanks for watching!
Eduardo Lopez not with the Keystep. I use it just as my midi keyboard. For getting the midi thru to work you need basically 2 MIDI splitters and a MIDI merger.
At 3:33, are those sounds coming right from the e2, or are you putting other effects and editing from another machine onto them, because it sounds really clear and punchy compared to what I usually get, and you don't even have the master effects on. How are you getting the sounds so punchy and full, and are you using a compressor or what on the insert effects? Thanks, I absolutely agree with all of your problems, but this is a really nice unit.
@@sharonsalazar8137 Hey Sharon, I am no expert, but I don't think that there is any equalization on the E2, but let me tell you this, if you want to get some nice sounds out of it, then learn more about the modualtion, effects that you use, the filter and the swing. The swing can really transform the sound in a different way. Also, their is a option in the menu, if you have the synth and drum machine version, (gray or blue) that is groove depth and groove type. Mess around with that to get more of a swing feel, and it can also seperate your sounds a little bit from eachother so that they are not right on top of eachother hitting at the same time. This will change the sound drastically along with swing, modulation and certain effects. There are many ways to shape and mold the sounds with chorus, punch, compression, and my two favorites are room reverb and wet reverb. I had this machine for a little over a year, and if you put in the time, you can get some really decent sounds out of it, but it does take some work and fascination. If you have any more questions, I will be more than happy to help you with what you may be having a problem with. I don't know alot about eq, but I know pretty much about these machines.
An envelope with a slow attack and indefinite sustain is possible, but don't use the eg, instead use modulation type 16, EG-Level. Maybe you should look into things a bit more before posting, seeing as moan 3 is not an issue due to the work around i just mentioned, it gives the impression that you are not quite as knowledgable as you make out.
Thanks for the workaround! But in my view that's exactly what that is; a workaround: a solution to a problem that shouldn't be there in the first place in a digital synth (e.g. shift + decay/release for sustain). After all the that's what an envelope is for.
I don't see it as a workaround, more of how Korg intended users to do things. I recommend spending more time learning how to get the most out of the E2 and less time moaning ;)
So what's your "solution" if I want a slow attack and an LFO to Filter modulation? Wobble the filter pot manually? Let's face it, it is a limitation of the synth engine.
You could record motion sequencing of manual filter modulation or use an external application such as a daw to send the correct cc's to the tribe and record that as motion sequencing. I think you're expecting too much, for its price the E2 is excellent value. You can't expect it be in the same league as the Octotrack which is over three times the price, or be the equivalent of 16 monologues (which would be around 24 times the price).
That's why I'm selling it soon and getting an Analog Rytm instead. Hope my video will deter those with high expectations from getting one. Thanks for tip; it's always good to learn something new. I also annotated your workaround on the video. A bit of overreaction with that FB group, though. Isn't it?
Midi thru ? it got its faults but not having a thru out socket should have made you check first, it's easy solved with a splitter box anyway. No sample preview is my hate omission from the software can live with the rest, if I wanted more from it I could have spent a lot more money and got it.
I obviously knew that it doesn't have a thru before I bought it, but it still annoys me. And sure, a spitter works, but that's always an extra box and extra cable you have to carry around. Why not have the MIDI Out serve as a double function thru?
The basic problem in the your setup is the octatrack.. with only midi out it has to always be the master and causes alot of problems ! i just want to say about the midi thing.. this is a all in one groovebox and is mean to be the brains as you mentioned the attack can be controled with modulation or with eg int on the filter section.. Korg has porven to be the masters when its about all in one effect units.im sure thay could of done that with the reverb..but i think the reason was that the tails of the effects whouldnt blend in the next pattern..I personaly think the reverb sounds good. but for the synth E2 version you need mulitple reverbs . i have the sampler and it rocks !
The OT has MIDI In, Out and Thru: it doesn't have to be the master. For example, with my current setup I have the RC-202 Looper as a master when I make loop-based jams. I respect that there is a modulation workaround, but then you lose your MOD... This box is a mess!
yes your right about the OT midi.sorry. i dont know why i thought it had only midi out !! haha for the price i think its a very good mashine. the thing about the electribe es-1 ,emx and Es is that its an all in one groove box.you need to have good sound design knowlege. anyway i got the ES2 and im very satisfied .
As much as we all owe Korg a debt of gratitude for their leadership and singlehandedly fixing the electronic musical instrument industry that had been screwed for over 20 years.......I, unfortunately, have to add that you can't trust them either. They have a really stupid way of designing products: They decide what it is, what it can do and what it will cost THEN their engineers are told to "Just make it happen" consequently instead of designing the best possible instrument then seeing what it will cost, they are constantly cutting corners to make something it its predetermined price. That's why you end up with this head-scratching type of stuff. Like no aftertouch on the Prologue, or these Electribes, which were a total flop. They need to make sure they design a quality instrument first, it's silly, no one is going to pay $1500 for a "Professional" synth with no aftertouch.....I like KORG for smaller things like monotribes, Volca's and things like that, once you start getting over a certain amount of money, I just don't trust them to deliver. Still, it's better than Elektron who INTENTIONALLY cripple their devices to try and force you to buy other ones, and they do this at the premium price point, which is just larcenous, they spend more on on-line schils posing as customers, who's job it is to shout down anyone who critcices them for thier un-ethical business. Someday Elektron will get what's coming to them.
That's insightful. I do love the Volcas but it feels like they were mostly the brainchild of Tatsuya Takahashi; now he's gone and they're launching a Volca mixer that doesn't run on batteries 😂. I also felt that the Monologue was one hell of a monosynth. When it comes to Elektron, I'm so invested in their workflow, that the only thing that I'll say is that the limitations of their instruments frequently stem from certain design choices (such as stability or general architecture) rather than questionable ethics. Take that with a grain of salt, though: I'm a fanboy!
I do wish korg would intentionally cripple their cheaper stuff a little less. memory is cheap so why does a volca not give you more sequences or bars? and they never never make a free firmware update with obviously needed improvements. all they have to do is make an electribe like the old one but with a couple of nicely needed improvements. the E2 has too many new downsides.
What about the clicking and popping sound that the instrument and synth sounds make when playing a quick repetitive note. Does anyone know on here if there is some kind of update that korg put out yet. I am using the korg electribe 2 gray synth right now, and I really do like it, but I have learned that when I want to make something where I want to play fast repetitive notes, it is not possible. I have put it away a couple months ago because of it having me so upset and frustrated. Another thing is why in the world would they have put the master effects amount on the xy pad? Korg dropped the ball in so many areas that are just merely a bare necessity. I don't see how they didn't catch these issues or if they just put it out regardless to if they knew or not, which is kind of like ripping us off or a crime to us beat makers in my opinion. Anyone that has any advice on how to fix the sound bug, or tell me about an update that fixes some of the issues, please, I am all ears.
just a shame a lot of the functionality of the emx and esx that made them so good has been missed in these new electribes. Just got my es2 and finding a lot of frustrating limitations and downgrades compared to my x series. Seems like a lot of stuff could be added and adjusted through updates to the os though. Would love a display for used/available voices as it is hard to know where they are being used up sometimes. Also.. what happened to shift/move note function!? Only used my es2 for a couple days so there are bound to be plenty of things I haven't come across yet.
It is a custom-made usb-to-DIN host with a channel selector. The E2 responds on hard-wired MIDI channels (track 1 - channel 1 etc.), so it's useful to quickly send midi to specific tracks.
Nice video! Can you please let me know how you recorded your voice in the clip? Is the condenser microphone show in the too of the frame recording it all?
Hey, it's great to know that you watch my videos! I'm a huge fan of your work; I've been following your FB page for ages. I usually record into a Rode NT1 plugged into Focursite Scarlett 18/8 and then into Ableton. All the instruments are also recorded via Scarlett (or Behringer ADA8000) into Ableton. The condenser is only catching my voice, everything else goes via line; that's why I almost always have my headphones on.
Wow, that's cool to hear. Thanks for following BPB! :) And thanks for the info about the recording process. I'm working on a little recording setup for my future videos and this will come in handy. My condenser captures too much room reverb when I set it to that distance, though, so I'll need to work on improving that.
It's always a bit of a trade-off between the amount of room reverb, the amount of "organic" noises (swallowing etc.) and the level of comfort while recording. I was experimenting a lot with the setup; you can see that in some of my videos, the setup is far from comfortable, but now it's probably the best it can be. A microport would probably be more comfortable to wear, but this setup has the advantage of sending all the tracks to one place which makes it easier to edit later.
Yeah, it's all about trial and error in the end - and finding the best balance between sound quality and comfort, as you said. A shotgun mic would work best I presume, but I don't have one so I'll give the condenser another try and try to match the quality you have here.
You're right, a shotgun mic would do the trick, but a condenser should also work. My space is far from being adapted and in the past I even used a cheaper condenser mic from t.bone. So unless you're in a cave, you should be good. I thought that audio quality in your EQ Tutorial (which looks like a similar setup to what I have) was spot on.
it seems that you would be happier with the EMX! it has proper thru, assignable MIDI channels and per track send to the 3 FX processors...the EG is quite simple though but I never found it a real limitation =)
I dude, I totally agree with your point and I want to go beyond.... I'm just messing around with my E2 Blue and I like the sound but I notice several lack of features the people of Korg leave from the EMX models....... 1º 8 bars of notes ...they changed for 4 missery bars.... wtf? 2º Song mode.....vanished...... With the song mode you can really doing magic with the EMX and record motion all along the track (PD. don't fuck me telling me about the Chain mode.... ) 3º I really hate you can't Shift Part notes and even transporting patterns ...... (Really ??? Why Korg?) 4º And in the same way you can't move nor copy data on the pattern... You have to rebuilt it... Awful! 5º you can't choose an arp.... on the EMX if you push 4 notes and push the ribbon you could make the arpeggio but on the E2 you can't, it's disgusting...... 6º I use my EMX with the band and send the metronome by 3/4 outputs ............ you know.. don't you? E2 can't do it ohhhhh I hate that features ... or lack of features..... The things I love against the EMX is: 1º Portability.... The thing I hate the most on the EMX is her AC power supply ... Horrible and Expensive... The E2 I can plug with her power supply and even with the Microkorg, the Kaosspad or the volcas PS... and with ¡¡¡Batteries!!! 2º Polyphony... It's one of the most powerful features on the E2. 3º You can choose a Part without making noise .... the EMX has that awful problem if you select a muted part to tweak things ...that part put it on .....(Nooooo Mr Korg!!!) And the knowledge we can learn about this is the Korg People like to fuck us...... ahhhh And our money of course ....Because doing the same machine E2 Blue and E2 Red and want us to pay twice is a awful thing .............. Bad guys Korg peole........ PD. All my stuff is Korg .... And I'm really reconsidering to use another brand ...... I don't like how Korg mess with their owners.....
yeah, I do it too. The Volca Metronome destroys any Electribe metronome, is very powerfull but you has to lose one important part of the gear. The Electribe 2 with volca keys and bass even with microbrute is a super beast machine.... because you can manage the sounds of the external gear individually. I thing in a perfect world all the devices with metronome must have an exclusive metronome output ..... It's a pity :(
Hi @Hmz Multimedia. I'm interested in what you said about Pattern Chain and Song mode. The Pattern Chain does allow to compose full songs right ? I mean if you chain all your patterns like "chorus x4 - verse x2 - back to chorus x2, etc" you basically have a Song mode, right ? What was superior in the song mode of the EMX or ESX ? I'm asking that because I hesitate between buying a ESX or a Electribe 2 Sampler. I want to write music using my own samples, then play bass and sing on top, without having to change patterns manually (basically press play at the beginning of the song and play bass over it until it ends, just like with a programmed drum machine). Thanks ! :)
FSBass hi, in your example when you come back to one of the chained patterns you will be in an infinite loop then "the song" won't ever end. You have to repeat the patterns and play em gradually. Finally you can have a song with the chain mode but.... You will have to spend lots of patterns to do the song. The different in the esx is that you don't expend patterns, you say to the machine a kind of "storyboard" of patterns and then the machine play em gradually and..... The most important, you can automate effect all along the song, because esx record all the movements you do all along the song, even muting and new notes..... E2, sadly don't work like that, is less independent... My conclusion is easy, there are absolutely different machine. E2 is funny and you enjoy a lot and you get a kind of E2 sounds.... And ESX is funny and you enjoy a lot and get ESX sounds.... The power of one is the lack on the other..... E2 XY pad.... Super funny.... ESX arpegiator ribbon super funny and accurate.... I could don't stop talking, bug the fact is.... They are different..... I recommend you that test both of them and then decide. I expect my explanation halpern you, if you need to solve another doubt, ask Regards and enjoy the music
What is the device you had made? Can someone else buy it as well? Is it just a purpose built midi-pal or midi-buddy? I'd love one, not just for use with my E2 and E2s, but for general use.Seems hella quicker than on the controller and the fact that it's just turning a knob mean you can do some pretty cool glitchy, multiple patch melodies playing live quite easily!
It's was custom-made by a local guy. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the guy, because he's super unreliable. But apparently, it's relatively easy to do. It's a USB Host chip, powered by USB B and providing power to the devices. The device listens on all MIDI channels and sends only the channel selected by the knob to the output. Ask around for a local electronically-gifted engineer and they might put something together for you.
So would you guys recommend getting an ES-1 or an E2S? I didn’t get the whole MIDI thing but would it work fine if I wanted to use the E2S as master sending midi clock the rest of my gear?
I guess the general consensus is that the ESX / EMX is the best Electribe to date. I had the ESX for a couple of days and I'd have to agree with that sentiment: the build quality is just exceptional. That being said, the E2 is perfectly capable of being your master clock / master sequencer.
Personally, reverb on individual instruments in a composition sounds unnatural and i have all the reverb controlled in aux on the mixer using a kaos pad... Which probably negates my unnatural sounding argument.
I have seen reverb used to change the way certain drum beats sound on this electribe which kind makes me think a bit different, I suppose it depends on how you use it and how much of it you use on any given instrument.
I change my mind on the whole thing, I love this thing more than I believed I would. Still have not utilized midi fully, just to control one keyboard and vice versa, but I found some interesting and bizarre ways of manipulating sounds and samples and effects and so forth... it's become my main synth in my set up. The limitations are petty except midi, midi limitations are still valid.
I have the es2 sampler{worst sampler on the market!} ITS GOOD FOR A drum machine and minimal sequencer but loading, saving, and working with user samples is a complete nightmare! but I really don't see what all the fuss is over the fixed midi deal. matter of fact, I find it useful because you always know which channel each pad and part is on!!!! and since the es2 is a sequencer, putting it at the end of your midi rig is kind of silly. but if you must, use the sync in function only!!! thanx.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I heard similar things about the ES2. Regarding fixed MIDI, it was a big deal for me, because I found the E2 sequencer seriously lacking; for example step editing velocities hi hats was pretty tedious and slow. Of course, I might be spoiled because I'm primarily invested in the Elektron workflow with parameter locks. As a closing thought, of course, the primary usage of E2 should be as a sequencer, but why shouldn't you use it as a sound module should you want to...
Thanks! The gear closeup is EOS 600D with a custom lens and the two angles are from a pair of budget xiaomi yi. Lights are managed by a set of Philips Hue bulb.
Thanks these are all incredibly important issues that all potential buyers should be aware of. Irritatingly, very uncharachteristically, Korg is seeming very very lazy recently; the Electribe line is the ONLY one that got a OS update to a much revised 2.0 version later on, and still it's missing all these things and yet it costs $400, that's TEN times the cost of their Gadget for iOS. It's not like they have an upmarket big sampler they don't wanna cannabalize sales of, why the F is Korg so lazy now thatthey can't both to write a soft MIDI thru routine into the OS? That's been a standard for every device not having a THRU (and this is a Fing multimbral sequencer, a multitrack MIDI based device...can't set parts to ignore incoming MIDI? Just crazy. There's weird limitations / omissions in the minilogue as well (which is otherwise the most incredible lovely synth) - the arpeggiator for instance ONLY can run at 16th notes!? wtf? My first dedicated synth was their microkorg which for arpeggiator it allowed user to use the row of 8 select buttons to toggle on/off each STEP in the arpeggios.
I'm no coder, but I would assume it couldn't be a hardship on the company whatsoever. Now if only they stuck the Volca Keys or Monologue analog engine in there it would be too hard for me to resist.
Hi! If you're loading longer samples from a memory card (1-2 min+) is there a long load time? Does it incapacitate the unit as the sample loads? Thanks!
It was custom-made by a guy I know, but he's so unreliable that I can't really recommend him to anyone. I later learned that I was lucky to even get my device because for most of my friends who worked with him, he just took the money and disappeared.
Pity, could be good machine, but it is good you point out adsr, at the time it was compared to circuit, but was far more flexible, but seems its lost to the circuit now, although you still are stuck with assigned midi channels.
The Circuit was a comparable machine at launch: now it's light years ahead: open synth engine, iPad editors, sample support, microtiming, p-locks the list goes on... Thanks for your on-going support of the channel! Much appreciated!
HalutioN Its a pleasure lol! One of the things Korg needs to improve on is product support, but now Tat's gone, I fear they may become another Roland. But its channels like this helping us all to learn and also helping each other to get out there x my next video is a challenge to get out there lol.
You're spot on about Tatsutya being gone making a huge difference. I mean first product that they release after his departure is a Volca without a battery
Dude! Don't even get me started! I hate those jack breakout cables: easy to forget easy to lose and they could easily have implemented proper DINS on top of the case. Clear example of style over substance in my book.
Maybe you should work around its limitations .. when you buy a Piano, or a guitar or a Saxaphone etc, you accept their limitations and use it to your advantage ... just another point of view
Amen! Or you can just move on and find something that works for you :) Sold it and got an Elektron Analog RYTM. You can check out my first impressions video for a bit of a comparison! Thanks for watching!
zedster911 i agree wholeheartedly, unfortunately i don't like the way the sampler sounds and nobody wants to buy it from me. there are timing issues as well.. as in its not great and goes out of time. with that said, now that im over the terrible workflow and interface.. i do occasionally trick myself into making cheesy parts that'll I'll never release.. but its something and a stress reliever as well as helps remove music writing blocks.
zedster911 I also have found that limitations can be very helpful for creativity - but different limitations are not all the ssame. And I am a Pianist & Saxaphone (from Clarinet) player and both of those instruments were designed and re design-ed to get to how they are; moreover clarinet companies are always trying to improve inherent difficult parts. But this is a just-released DIGITAL device, which is a primary benefit of digital.
Yeah the poor MIDI configuration options of this device just make it shit to integrate with other gear. I was doing similar stuff to you by filtering particular channels with iConnectMIDI4, but it just gets over complicated, and changing setup becomes a pain... And seriously, it should just have soft MIDI through and configurable part channels... All Roland devices I've used can do it fine (including the Boutiques, which I really love) so I just don't see why it couldn't be implemented here by Korg. I do like the E2, but I do often think about getting rid of it. I know you got rid of yours a while back... Probably a good decision! I love Elektron gear too (not the price tags so much though!)
I have no idea why this MIDI config is so rigid: blows my mind, especially that it could all be done in software! I did sell mine to help cover the cost of the Analog RYTM: I would have kept it for traveling but, as you mentioned, the prohibitive price tag forced me to sell it.
there is so much more not to like. stuff like step jump hat goes out go time. also when you touch the chaos pad it triggers exactly when you hit it... always out of time. so disappointed in korgs efforts
I have the Analog 4. Its great but man its like pulling teeth (sheesh, that file system and sample management is BS) and contrary to what the Elektron fanboys say the Analg drum sounds dont cut it in the mix - they have a reallt horrible mid range bump around 200-500hz no matter what you do to the sounds and it can sound very boxy, not fizzy warm as I thought it would. So, I end up having to mix in samples which takes a long time to get just right mixing with analog. Then that doesnt really work out so I end up using samples only. To really get teh best from it I found it way to much of a chore, by the timeI got the sound right I usually lost the vibe because I write whilst I mix. Despite its limitations i am looking at the Korg.
Yes, the Korg really is the way to go. It has its limitations (like, for instance, having to leave the card in in lieu of no internal memory for the Korg), the Korg is the only one to have a chain mode (just did "Feels" with the LinnDrum samples and "Formigueiro" [a song by Ivan Lins] with the DMX samples in this fashion) AND the only one to allow samples to be put on all the pads.
I would much rather buy the new Elektron Digitakt. By the time you buy 2 Volca kits and this, you can get a real drum sampler and sequencer with better quality like Digitakt!
Problem is: you can't load samples on _all 16 pads,_ which was the _dealbreaker._ I ended up buying an electribe sampler because of that. Yes, you have to keep the memory card on at all times, but still....
Yes, Eduardo, you can do it on the electribe :) That's how I was able to load my Linn/Oberheim/DrumTraks/TR-707/Drumulator sounds on all 16 pads (12 in the case of the Drumulator, 14 [added 1 additional tom] in the case of the DrumTraks). Can't do _that_ on the Digitakt. (Note that I own the electribe sampler, a rare example: I have the original E2S MKI case but with the new firmware.)
Such a powerful bit of kit, but so so many frustrations... Sample editing is so awkward and soul destroying...saving and loading samples is awkward... The effects are pretty mince...Playing in keyboard mode is unintuitive in terms of the scaling (why didn't they just have an option for the 16 pads act like a keyboard?)... Midi functionality on parts is poor + ability to play parts with external keyboard rubbish ... Can't pitch up all parts in one go is annoying... No adsr is annoying... Manual is shit.... Support is shit... Having to use 3rd party sample library is unforgivable... no separate audio outs is mental... No, no quantise option a missed trick and other other 1/16 1/32 etc signature options are just weird... having to remember to resave all samples on each use or risk deleted work... accidentally changing sequence number and loosing last sequence data... In summary, a bit of a fuckin calamity if I'm honest... powerful as fuck but an absolute horror show in terms of workflow and keeping the creativity going... korg should be truly ashamed of this, especially given the user base of previous versions... their last firmware update was 16 months ago, despite numerous postings about it's many flaws...
I heard of midi when I was a kid I should have known everything there is to know about it. I could never figure out a setup like yours or using midi its too confusing to me.
Actually I have a question. I still dont know how to handle it well because I just bought it, so far I just played with the preset patterns in trigger mode and keyboard mode. But there is something I just watched, the intros are made in a pattern and the chorus and verses (for example) are made into different patterns, so if you want a "fill", a drum arrangement or something (you know) at the end of a pattern, how can I do it? Can I have different arrangements? (lets say 2 or 3)
Sorry, another question, please answer: I play guitar, and I plug it in my guitar amp (a fender), I also have a Boss gt10 digital guitar pedalboard. and the question is, Is there a way to use both at the same time?? for example pluggin the gt10 in the electribe 2?
Couldn't agree more. Where do I sign? Especially now that Novation--with a series of quality of updates--has completely left the Electribe in the dust!
Korg engeniers are smoking crack, no midi thru and fixed chanels are deal breaker not even talking about effects engine. Korg dont care about customers and not making aby update, there is even petition about it.
To many unexpected outcomes / me personally- I only conect my tr8 to my my volca sample and maybe my tb3 / my curcuit and es2 -I leave unconected / more freedom and no surprises / sometimes I do conect them all sometimes I don't conect any - it works if everybody on the same bpm
For me, midi sync is key, and I'm also not a huge fan of the sequencer on the E2: I admit that I'm extremely spoiled by Elektron sequencing capabilities. But live beat matching is certianly a lot fun and can yield interesting, if unrepeatable, results.
It's pretty much utter trash. The size to be portable with batteries is the only truly awesome thing. I'll admit, you can get some interesting sounds out of it but only four bars and no way to turn off quantisation makes it a trashy and pretty much useless toy.
@@calleenmusicchannel How much music is off the grid anyway? You have 250 x 4 bars to work with. You kinda need an SD card per project though cause you can't save multiple pattern and sample files, it overwrites whatever is on the SD card.
@@city3015 double the cost, digitakt monophonic and no song mode and no battery. electribe is $200 used, paraphonic, easy to use, has AA battery and chain mode (simple song mode). mc-101 maybe. Polyened tracker maybe, this is nice.
@@city3015 I do not know if it is better, but I have heard amazing music from the electribe. I have heard less amazing music from the others. Of course it is not the instrument who is in charge, it is the musician.
@@LateNightBeatsOfficial In fact, all the gear on your desk is limited as hell, synths included. I think you’re just buying the wrong gear
To anyone who comes across this video in 2018, you can assign global parameters to a single track now
Thanks for the update! Were there any significant OS updates in the recent months?
i am in 3290 and your post is still relevant
@Poykeh Official i left i parked in 33138 so i better get back to the future before any one finds it !
What do you mean by assigning global parameters to a single track? Does that just mean that you can either have the global effects setting like a wet reverb on or off on each track/pad?
But how??
The Electribe 2 have one unique feature, that a lot of other machines don´t have:
You can save each pad as an wave-file!
But, when it comes to value for money the E2 is truly awesome and if you export your files later into a daw you can finally put some proper reverb on them :)
no reverbs for specific parts is destroying me from the beggining :/
You need a midi adapter like the Korg PlugKey to get regular midi out of the ipad instead of the usb connection.
No 808 style drum programming though :(
Thanks for the quick reply.
Cheers!
MPC doesn't really fit my workflow... great machines, but "not the droid I'm looking for". ;)
true, but i like the flashing lights and layout. why cant akai release an MPC100 mk2. god dammit its 2016. someone needs to get this right.
That's why I'm frustrated :) It's a software thing and could easily be implemented. Roland apparently can do it with almost all their gear.
but this issue only takes place when you are sending midi from the Electribe to the rest of the gear right? If its at the end of the chain, being sequenced by a digitakt, will I have any MIDI limitation?
the issue is with the Roland more. they just completly blew the midi on the mc 303 / 505 / 909 / sp808. that's 75% the reason people hate them these days.
I Can't sync it with anything except the volcas, maybe a factory defect
Trying via midi? Maybe your breakout cables are broken?
@@LateNightBeatsOfficial Already tried with 3 different cables and gears
Have a blessed day
rtfm
if u connect via usb its also kinda like through
I agree, I had mine for a few weeks expecting something awesome, sold it not long after and now use my EMX-1 instead which is a far better machine in my opinion. The synth options were limited, the menu diving drove me insane.. it really is a poor product compared to its predecessor.
Not to mention the build quality...
Hi, you can use panning to send to an external reverb.
Thanks, but that just sounds like pure desperation!
Its pretty limited but its not bad for the money. You can probably pick them up for £250 second hand now. I still use my EMX2 all the time.
I'll look out for that
well it's a love - hate relationship, I know.
They're pretty helpful as long as you're not criticizing the device :P
thanks anyway for your videos, and the advice, i'll go check on facebook!
SlackTMusic so with the keystep you can send midi into the electribe and control synths that have midi coming from the electribe?
Eduardo Lopez not with the Keystep. I use it just as my midi keyboard. For getting the midi thru to work you need basically 2 MIDI splitters and a MIDI merger.
At 3:33, are those sounds coming right from the e2, or are you putting other effects and editing from another machine onto them, because it sounds really clear and punchy compared to what I usually get, and you don't even have the master effects on. How are you getting the sounds so punchy and full, and are you using a compressor or what on the insert effects? Thanks, I absolutely agree with all of your problems, but this is a really nice unit.
Hey!!! I have problems with master sound of E2, do you know how to equalize it?
@@natanmandala Hi can you tell me how to use it with korg kross 2 .I want to play sound from E2 with korg kross 2 keys.
How do u think what is better - korg e2 or electron digitakt? For the guy, who didn't use analog devices at all )
Being an Elektron fanboy, I'd definitely recommend a DIGITAKT; simply a much deeper device in my opinion, but also twice as expensive as the E2.
and no song or chainmode. The digitakt is only a sampleplayer-drummachine and no groovebox like an octatrack.
Earlier Electribes, like Emx-1 and Smx-1, have midi. Maybe if Korg supports this series, we'll get a nice toy to make music, I hope it will be soon.
I can select the midi channel on my Microkorg XL+, so not a problem for me.
It's awesome that there are workarounds: iConnect Midi 4+ helped in my case.
Not to mention build quality. I had an ESX-1 for a day and I was blown away by how sturdy and high-end it feels compared to the E2.
What is the red midi selector box ? Thnx
Not to mention the superior build quality; you're completely right!
Esx is machine
I dude, I totally agree with your point and I want to go beyond....
I'm just messing around with my E2 Blue and I like the sound but I notice several lack of features the people of Korg leave from the EMX models.......
1º 8 bars of notes ...they changed for 4 missery bars.... wtf?
2º Song mode.....vanished...... With the song mode you can really doing magic with the EMX and record motion all along the track (PD. don't fuck me telling me about the Chain mode.... )
3º I really hate you can't Shift Part notes and even transporting patterns ...... (Really ??? Why Korg?)
4º And in the same way you can't move nor copy data on the pattern... You have to rebuilt it... Awful!
5º you can't choose an arp.... on the EMX if you push 4 notes and push the ribbon you could make the arpeggio but on the E2 you can't, it's disgusting......
6º I use my EMX with the band and send the metronome by 3/4 outputs ............ you know.. don't you? E2 can't do it ohhhhh
I hate that features ... or lack of features.....
The things I love against the EMX is:
1º Portability....
3º You can choose a Part without making noise .... the EMX has that awful problem if you select a muted part to tweak things ...that part put it on .....(Nooooo Mr Korg!!!)
And the knowledge we can learn about this is the Korg People like to fuck us...... ahhhh And our money of course ....Because doing the same machine E2 Blue and E2 Red and want us to pay twice is a awful thing ..............
Bad guys Korg peole........
PD. All my stuff is Korg .... And I'm really reconsidering to use another brand ...... I don't like how Korg mess with their owners.....
Interesting comparison between the E2 and EMX, I actually used the E2 in with a live band and I had a VOLCA Keys set up as a midi metronome :)
yeah, I do it too.
I expect my explanation halpern you, if you need to solve another doubt, ask
Regards and enjoy the music
It's a toy
Personally, reverb on individual instruments in a composition sounds unnatural and i have all the reverb controlled in aux on the mixer using a kaos pad... Which probably negates my unnatural sounding argument.
I'm actually warming up to the send concept for reverb myself, especially when mixing.
Cool vid! What cameras are you using?
Thanks! The gear closeup is EOS 600D with a custom lens and the two angles are from a pair of budget xiaomi yi. Lights are managed by a set of Philips Hue bulb.
No midi thru? Korg, really?
yeah...
That's precisely the reason why I'm frustrated with the E2: it seems like most of these things could be fixed with a few lines of code :)
Thanks!
Hey, I have never even touched the E2 Sampler; these are strictly my impressions on the E2 Workstation.
Hey Man, thx for the video! Can you tell where I can find the orange box, for different midi channel selection. THX a lot!
It was custom-made by a guy I know, but he's so unreliable that I can't really recommend him to anyone. I later learned that I was lucky to even get my device because for most of my friends who worked with him, he just took the money and disappeared.
THX for answering!
Can u have a finish instrumental with the korg by itself?
Sure, I think with pattern chaining you can achieve even more than that.
HalutioN I know😂...how to make a million volca owners upset in one easy step...like they're giving us a mixer...what we wanted.....but...but..😂
I have the E2 sampler the first two problems drive me mad. Maybe we could start a petition?
We probably should. I suspect that by the time KORG addresses the petition, my E2 will be long gone, though.
If there was another sampler/sequencer with X0X pattern programming I would sell mine too...
As expensive and at times annoying: Octatrack is the answer.
ugh 5x the price...
Yeah it's painful. Plus: I strongly recommend buying it new as Elektrons are very fragile instruments.
5 - dumb move by Korg on not implementing PROPER midi in/out jacks
Dude! Don't even get me started! I hate those jack breakout cables: easy to forget easy to lose and they could easily have implemented proper DINS on top of the case. Clear example of style over substance in my book.
What about voice stealing? Or the fact that your effects reset when you change patterns.
Haven't they fixed the latter with an update? I wouldn't know, cause I sold my over a year ago 🙈
Where did you get that midi switch thing?
I got it from facebook.com/Musket-Music-1612297772356312/?fref=ts but be warned that the waiting time was ridiculous and unpredictable.
I totally agree with you. You forget the 24MB RAM limitation ;)
Might be on purpose :) Me being a huge proponent of the Octatrack which only has 85MB of RAM and costs three times as much!
Yeah I am leaning toward either the new Elektron Digitakt or Octatrack in spite of learning curve but Electribe is complex to program as well.
Out of all the equipment i've owned there is nothing more instant-gratification than the electribe 2
zedster911 I also have found that limitations can be very helpful for creativity - but different limitations are not all the ssame. And I am a Pianist & Saxaphone (from Clarinet) player and both of those instruments were designed and re design-ed to get to how they are; moreover clarinet companies are always trying to improve inherent difficult parts. But this is a just-released DIGITAL device, which is a primary benefit of digital.
And its all about songwriting i got 4 of these hooked up to my recorder plast away
Thanks for the info! I am aghast to learn that MIDI channels are not assignable. Definitely makes me think twice.
Honestly, I haven't even checked that in the manual before i bought it: it never occurred to me that fixed channels could be a thing!
Sold mine bought some elektrons end of story lol
Yeah, I'm on that trajectory myself. I suspect an Analog Rytm in my nearest future :)
dan raiche same here :P
I've got 5 different Elektron machines but I still use and love my E2. Different beasts.
I would much rather buy the new Elektron Digitakt. By the time you buy 2 Volca kits and this, you can get a real drum sampler and sequencer with better quality like Digitakt!
When this video was recorded there were no rumours of the DIGITAKT, but I agree :)
Problem is: you can't load samples on _all 16 pads,_ which was the _dealbreaker._ I ended up buying an electribe sampler because of that. Yes, you have to keep the memory card on at all times, but still....
CrossCuntryFranco on the electribe you can?
Yes, Eduardo, you can do it on the electribe :) That's how I was able to load my Linn/Oberheim/DrumTraks/TR-707/Drumulator sounds on all 16 pads (12 in the case of the Drumulator, 14 [added 1 additional tom] in the case of the DrumTraks). Can't do _that_ on the Digitakt. (Note that I own the electribe sampler, a rare example: I have the original E2S MKI case but with the new firmware.)
There is no chain or song mode on the digitrak. The new firmware of the electribe adds finally the chainmode so whole songs are possible.
Esx1 still on your flyin carpet : )
I haven't even tried the sampler, but yeah why there's no "keyboard mode" (just pads lighting up to simulate a keyboard) boggles my mind.
To solve the problem with the midi channels there's a simple solution Retrokit 002, works also for Volca sample.
Cool! The issue is that Retrokit requires MIDI power and not all devices provide this. ICM4+ for example doesn't provide power.
You make it so difficult for yourself sir 😂
Welcome to my world!
HalutioN 🤣 you can check out my page, I do some stuff there 2
I made a video: don't like the ARP timing, EMX was better in this way
Yeah, actually I couldn't get any mileage out of the arp on the E2.
Awesome video by the way!
thank you this was constructive
Thanks for watching!
the reverb thing is a pain
Don't even get me started. I have two Behringer RV600 boxes that eat that Electribe reverb for breakfast!
your a genius I'm just garbage.
no need to be so harsh on yourself :)
I heard of midi when I was a kid I should have known everything there is to know about it.
I could never figure out a setup like yours or using midi its too confusing to me.
Hi! Love ur vid
Thanks!
auto mode is kind a like through
Ok, are you Moby?? Hey wait, That reminded me that I like that song "porcelain" and now I can try with my electribe.. any video help or something?
1. - NO REVERB wtf
I mean it does have it but only on the master track and it's honestly horrible.
electribe 3 please korg...get back to making a production worthy unit
Couldn't agree more. Where do I sign? Especially now that Novation--with a series of quality of updates--has completely left the Electribe in the dust!
@@LateNightBeatsOfficial I was just about to get a E2S, but I wonder which Novation model can I compare to?
thetitle ofthe vid is wrong but you re cool
It's working in this setup.

No complaints here.
Cool jam. Which functionality you're referring to specifically?
He is sequencing his hardware gear with the Electribe without latency. He shows how a midi setup can work just by using splitters.
SynthPimp yeah, but you can’t play on external midi device thru the e2 on them :(
Bummer ; )
Korg engeniers are smoking crack, no midi thru and fixed chanels are deal breaker not even talking about effects engine.
Korg dont care about customers and not making aby update, there is even petition about it.
The Octotrack is ok but can't beat the ES2,.. Be creative Dude.
Never tried the Sampler version: gave up on the new Electribes when I sold the E2, but I will most certainly try to be more creative :D
Got a trick I do called - don't use midi
Why shouldn't I use MIDI?
To many unexpected outcomes / me personally- I only conect my tr8 to my my volca sample and maybe my tb3 / my curcuit and es2 -I leave unconected / more freedom and no surprises / sometimes I do conect them all sometimes I don't conect any - it works if everybody on the same bpm
For me, midi sync is key, and I'm also not a huge fan of the sequencer on the E2: I admit that I'm extremely spoiled by Elektron sequencing capabilities. But live beat matching is certianly a lot fun and can yield interesting, if unrepeatable, results.
Just 4??this is poor equipment. Dissapointing after dissapointing, sold this out after 3 months.
This electribe is seriously bad. I hate all of it.
What's better?
@@difflocktwo elektron digitakt, roland mc707, polyend tracker... Many but korg electribe. No!!!
