I miss Maryland and crabbing. I remember using a trot line with my Dad. He'd drive the boat and I'd dip crabs. As a adolescent girl, that was some hard work in the 60s . Lol! Loved hand lining from our pier and soft crabbing at night where we lived on a peninsula. Crabs, crabs. 🦀 🦀 🦀 I used to bait minnow trap with our picked steamed crab shells and catch eels. Had to chase them with an axe to chop for trot line. My dad taught me how to twist rope and secure salted eels to it. We didn't use snoods. Best childhood ever in Bowleys Quarters Maryland. Ice skating, fishing in winter, swimming, fishing and crabbing in the summer. Oh, and when the bay was calm we dipped doublers.. so cool as the male carries female under him and swims on top of water so you can spot them by their swimming fins . The water was like glass, so calm. fond memories!
Have you ever crabbed the Atlantic ocean tributaries like the chincoteague Bay just North of the Virginia line on the Maryland side any good grabbing there I know the regulations are a little different
When I used to crab with my father back in the day we noticed the crabs would settle as the day went on so a basket you could barely get the lid on in early morning may seem slack by the time we came in the river. So we would throw a few more on and also if you loosen the basket lid hold downs at this point then turn the basket upside down a couple times the crabs will fill the basket again as they get agitated and agents just laying there in nice packed lines anymore.Always try to maintain at lest 6 dozen large or num 1 and 7 or so in the med etc. Just something we used to do I’m sure you know all this thought info may help others.
