  • Life in American Samoa can be difficult to navigate, but we've got you covered. If you're in need of eye care, Dr. Petaia, at My Vision Eye Center & Optical, will meet your needs. She's excellent, which is good because she's the only optometrist in this US territory.
    Today we're showing you our experience at our eye exams, the selection of glasses available, and a breakdown of the total cost of our visit.
    Hope you find this helpful, whether in deciding to move to American Samoa or just making your life here a little easier.
    Thanks again for watching and for all your support. Have you been to see Dr. Petaia and get your vision and eyes checked?

    That's about what I paid for my vision exam and new glasses last year ..within ten bucks.
    I got glasses first in the '70s... materials have improved dramatically since then....

    I was an optician for many years before I retired last year. I was sure just by what Hadley was describing that there was no doubt that she was going to be prescribed glasses. Smallish writing on the board, letters and words running together and blurry were all indications of nearsightedness. I fitted lots of girls just about her age with their first glasses. Watching your video I could tell that you were pretty sure that she was going to getting glasses when you asked her if it was blurry. You recognized those very same things when you got your first glasses. Most likely the reason she's nearsighted is due to genes that she got from you or possibly from her dad or both of you. I have a feeling that you may have anticipated that there was a good possibility of her becoming nearsighted at some point since you wear glasses and contacts.
    So I will describe all the different things being used to examine her eyes. The first thing she had done was a pre exam and that's generally done by an optician. I did many hundreds of pre exams. It's done to get a pretty good idea about where the optometrist needs to start the actual eye exam at. So it was already determined at that point that Hadley would need glasses. This was done at 2:57. The next step was to :"refract" her eyes, in other words, determine how much prescription her eyes were going to need in order for her to see things perfectly clear through her glasses. The device being used is called a "phoropter". It allows the doctor to change out various lens options until Hadley was able to see the 20/20 line sharp and clear. The next thing being done was at 4:07 and the doctor was checking to several things. She was checking Hadley's eye health, which i'm sure was just fine, and she was checking to see if she has astigmatisms or not. Then you had your eyes examined and i'm curious to know if you needed any change in your prescription or not? Usually your eyesight slows down as you enter in your twenties and then stops changing sometime before you reach your 25th birthday. It was nice see how Hadley seemed to enjoy picking out the frame for her glasses. She seemed to have good taste in what she thought looked good on her and what didn't. Once she made her choice the optician needed to do some measurements and the main one was to something called a PD measurement. It was done at the 6:42 point. That hand held device that Hadley was looking through was measuring the distance between her pupils. That's so her eyes will be looking through what is known as the "sweet spot" of her lenses. I'm thinking that Hadley is somewhere between 11 and 13 years old judging by her size, but she acts far more mature than that. It was very refreshing to see how happy she was about getting glasses. I don't know how it is Samoa but here in the states wearing glasses has become extremely popular with not only young girls her age but older girls as well. So much so that all the boutiques have several racks of fake glasses for those girls that don't need glasses but want to have the "look" of needing glasses. Glasses are pretty much a must have as a great fashion accessory. I heard her say that she won't ever be seen without glasses again. As you may know she really should wear her glasses all the time for at least the first week or 10 days so she gets used to wearing them and so her eyes can fully adjust to the prescription. After that it's up to her how much she wears her glasses. I doubt that her prescription is very strong so she should be able to see pretty well without them for most things. But she be one that doesn't like seeing anything even a little blurry and prefer keeping her glasses on rather than having them off. It's perfectly okay for her to wear her glasses all the time if she wants to. Wearing her glasses all the time won't do any harm to her eyes and it won't cause her eyes to worsen. But as you know from your own history her eyes are going to worsen on their own from year to year anyway no matter how much wears or doesn't wear her glasses. The only thing I do suggest is that when she's doing a lot of close work such as reading a book or studying for more than 30 minutes she should take her glasses off for that. otherwise if she's comfortable wearing her glasses let her wear them. Did you ask her after she wore her glasses for that first day or so if things seemed even more blurry when she took them off? If so that's very normal and only means that her eyes were adjusting and becoming more relaxed. I have a feeling that she will be very good at taking good care of her glasses. Since you wear glasses i'm sure that you will show her anything she needs to know about her glasses.
    You ladies spent a lot of money on glasses and contacts and I assume you also have insurance that paid a good portion of the cost as well. Remembering that I was an optician something you should take a look at for you and Hadley are some on line sites that you can safe lots of money on glasses and contacts. I have 3 sites for glasses that are very good that I have used for my own family as well as many friends. They are Zeelool, Eye Buy Direct and Zenni Optical. Now I mostly order from Zenni just out of preference. Zenni has a very nice selection of glasses for $6.95 that includes single vision lenses, which is what you and Hadley wear, in whatever prescription is required. They have hundreds more for under $13.00 as well. Something you may both be interested in is Prescription sunglasses. They do that for $5.00 more. They ship anywhere in the world and shipping is only $5.00. And for your contacts take a look at "lens.com" They sell all the major brands and you can easily compare what you pay just by comparing your prescription information on your contact lens packets. You need the base curve, diameter and prescription. The prescription will be SPH with a number with a minus sign in front of it something like this SPH -3.75 and if you have astigmatism correction it will have a CYL and numbers after that as well.
    Hadley looks really cute and even a little cuter wearing glasses. I hope you have a wonderful and safe New Years.

      Wow! Thank you for all the information! I didn’t know all that about the different steps of an eye exam. You’re pretty much spot on with all your guesses about us 😄 My eye sight has actually been improving over the past few years. I don’t know if that will continue until I’m back to 20/20 or maybe I’ll be far-sighted someday. Who knows?
      I meant to mention the option of ordering online. I tried 1-800-Contacts when we were first on-island and no one at that company could figure out how to ship them here. American Samoa wasn’t an option in their computer system for either state or country, so they just kept canceling my order. I gave up and that’s when I figured out that we had a local eye dr. She always has my prescription in contact ready to go, which has been easy and convenient.
      Also, you mentioned insurance. We don’t have any kind of medical insurance here, in American Samoa. We enjoy universal health care for everything but vision, and considering our costs for these exams are without insurance deducting anything, they’re very reasonably priced.
      Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge, I’ve always been interested in the workings of the human body and medicine.

      @@AmSamFam Thank you for your reply. Funny thing I was typing my comment as I was watching your video and even stopped it several times. I had already typed about the fact that vision usually becomes stable sometime around the age of 25 before you said that your eyesight had actually improved slightly since your last eye exam. I was too lazy to go back and change what I had already written. Anyway, that's nice that your eyesight is getting better with time. Sorry to say I don't think it will get back to being 20/20 again but at least it's nice to know that it's not getting worse like it used to back when you first started wearing glasses and needed an increase about every year their after. Now it's interesting that you mentioned that maybe you will be farsighted someday. Actually you that's very likely to happen to you. It's not at all unusual for myopia, nearsightedness, to improve as you enter into your thirties and early forties, but at the same time reading small print starts to become more of a challenge to your eyes. The next real change for you will be getting your first, dare I say it, bifocals. Now in your case, when that time comes, you will opt for what is called "progressives" The major difference is that unlike traditional bifocals that has a two vision areas with a rater noticeable line dividing the two areas "progressives" has three areas of vision and no lines through the lenses. Actually it may surprise you that many college students wear "progressives" these days because of so much added reading and studying they need to do. Progressives have the upper area which is the larger area for seeing distance just like your current glasses has. They have a middle area which is called the "mid range" area is good for seeing things that aren't all that far away but not that close either. Most people use this "mid range" area when working in front of a computer screen. The lower area is called the "reading add" and as the name implies this area is what you would use to read small print through. Now the somewhat bad news. You clearly enjoy wearing contacts as your"go to choice" to see with rather than glasses. They do make bifocal contacts but besides being quite expensive most people find them difficult to wear. The main reason is that in order to work each lens is weighted so they don't spin around on the eyes. The problem is as you move your head from side to side they tend to rock and as they rock back and forth things quickly get out of focus as well. Now as far as when you will be entering the time for this change is very hard to say. But anytime between late thirties and early fifties is rather normal.
      If you get normal mail service in Samoa then you should be able to get your contacts and glasses sent to you as well. I'm not sure if 1-800 -CONTACTS is international or not? I do know that "lens.com" is less expensive than 1-800-CONTACTS because I have had a number of people tell me they used to get their contacts from 1-800-CONTACTS and "lens.com was cheaper for the same lenses. They have a 1-800 phone number tat you can call. If your unable to call using -1.800 numbers if you want I will be glad to call for you and ask if they ship to you or not? Also I know that Zenni has a 1-800 number and very nice customer service people. The price you paid in total wasn't bad considering you both got eye exams and Hadley got her glasses and you got your contacts. What you paid for your eye exams was a very good price. Here in the states even with insurance an eye exam can still cost anywhere from nothing to around $25.00 as a co-pay. So $40.00 and $30.00 isn't bad at all. Here without insurance an eye exam is around $125.00. One thing I am curious to know is, was this your first visit to this doctor or have you already gone their for an eye exam and contacts before? I ask that because i'm wondering why you were charged a fitting fee unless you were a new patient for her.
      So lastly how is Hadley doing with her glasses. I'm sure she is still loving them but even loving them it still could mean she is getting used to wearing them. How is she doing with that? Is she past the part of her needing to clean them constantly? I'm sure that I don't have to tell you that around this time next year she is probably going to needing her eyes examined and most likely an increase in her glasses. The more she grows the more of an increase she is going to need. She's in that age group where growth spurts tend to happen. So watch to see if you see her squinting to see things with her glasses on. She could need an increase at around 8 or 9 months.
      Happy New Year!

      @Micha-bp5om ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@soundmanpt The newest research on myopia show that doing any close work using the minus glasses aggravates the prescription. One friend started wearing -0.5 glasses at 13 years old and the eye doctor told her to wear them full time. Her mother obliged her to wear them always, including while reading, using the phone, doing homework. She now has to wear -6 diopters. I started wearing glasses at 15 with -1, but never wore the glasses since I see quite well. I am now 29 and have the same prescription.
      In China now they use progressive lenses on children (up the normal minus for seeing 6meters away and down reading prescription with a slight plus prescription) to stop progression of myopia

    • @soundmanpt
      @soundmanpt ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Micha-bp5om That's not really something all that new. When someone is nearsighted and wears minus glasses they really only need their glasses for seeing things at a distance. And just as you found by researching and especially for a child under ten years old they can wear their glasses all the time if they want to except when dong anything close such as reading from a book or phone. Then they should take their glasses off. Now I have know idea how much that may have effected your friends eyesight by wearing her glasses when doing close work. But at the same time you may have also read that when getting glasses at a young age will often result in them needing increases in their glasses about every year. That's due to growth. Growth usually continues until as late as your mid twenties but can end as early as 18 years old. So It was an advantage that you didn't need glasses until you were 15 and then by not wearing them. It's even possible that you were either over prescribed or you may not have even needed glasses at all if you were able to see pretty well without them. Even though -1.00 is quite weak, it's still enough to make a difference in your eyesight. I think if you had really needed glasses with that prescription you have found things at least somewhat blurry without them. Something that people don't know is that you should never go for an eye exam during the slow periods in the optical business. Every store has goals they are required to meet and when those goals aren't met the ig bosses aren't happy. So the mangers will often push the optometrist to write unnecessary prescriptions especially for glasses. A doctor can easily write someone a prescription of -.50 SPH even if the patient has perfect eyesight. The patient has no way of knowing they were prescribed glasses they didn't need. And in fact they would actually be able to see slightly better wearing the glasses. Here's why. All a -.50 prescription would do to someone with perfect vision is provide them with 20/15 vision. If you know anyone that has had lasik that's about the vision a lasik patient ends up with after their surgery.
      So now that your 29 are you now actually wearing your glasses a little bit now? At -1.00 your eyesight is still quite good or has it even dropped to an even weaker prescription? Are you even required to wear glasses when driving? How's Hadley doing with her glasses. I'm sure you have passed on some very good advice to her as to when she should and shouldn't wear her glasses.

    Since you mentioned health cares, are there any Alzheimer’s programs there for people in mental health? Very forgetful these days that I intend to repeat myself and can’t remember what I did!

      That’s a great question that I don’t have an answer to, but I’m going to look into it. We’ve been wanting to do a video that is all things medical and that will be a great addition.

    Is it possible for me to purchase a home there or just rent ?

    • @AmSamFam
      @AmSamFam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. Only people who are at least 50% Samoan can own land here. The rest of rent 🤙

    I really want to meet this AmSam Family when I come visit and make a umu for their family because I love them enjoying life in American Samoa. I want to teach the husband how to make a respective Samoan speech.
