Keep this up bro, It doesn't matter if it's a massive engine tear down, or if you feel like fully detailing a rust bucket.. this content works and i'd assume most of us goofballs are here just to get better insight on how folks work on their vehicles.
Eric we would watch you sweep your garage every week! Why? Because you are one of us. Down 2 earth car dude who loves working on them and talking about them with the passion that if you want it done right you need to do it yourself! No stupid back ground music, no stupid overproduction, no stupid sales pitch for sponsored crap that has nothing to do with the channel/content. Ya tell like it like it is and we enjoy it! Thanks for what you do and keep it up!
Only just realised you have video's other than the engine strip-downs, really great to see this one, always liked the Esprit, I even like the colour. I think you'll find that you don't have an oil leak, that is the patented, British, chassis lubrication and rust protection system. Some of our cars have such an advanced version of this system that the oil system operates on a total loss system ensuring that you never have old oil in your engine. We're not as dumb as we look you know? That bodge of a fix on the fans is bad enough but they could at least have put the odd one in the middle, that was really firing off my CDO gene!
When I was a kid there was a Europa that sat out in the street around the block from our house. It just sat there for 2 years and I never seen it move. I was apx.13 years old and I thought it was so cool! Its the only 1 I've ever seen in real life. Your Esprit is great, I never know they could have a V 8 in them. Now that I'm old enough to buy something like this (just retired) you made a good sales pitch.
Hey, my son owned a lotus v8 too, I also owned 1999 but I sold it 2 years ago (same yellow) My son is excited to hear that you are going to convert your leaking transmission to a porsche. I Sent him this video.
That car is beautiful and sound really great!! I watch so many of ur videos and really enjoy watching u tear engines down and would really enjoy doing that. I work in collision repair so I don't get to have the fun of tearing down engines. Love ur channel!!
I thought the exact same thing. Eric is doing a maintenance video and Ray just posted an engine autopsy. We are getting crossover content now. Love the Lotus.
Love the car, love the color and really love the sound of the exhaust. It's a shame that we don't have small/boutique (But not uber rare) car manufacturers like Lotus over here. My friend has an Exige S and I got to drive it both on the street and also on the track. Absolutely fantastic car. Speed through simplicity and weight reduction. I'll take it 10 out of 10 times.
I could literally listen to you rev this engine for hours. What a great sounding machine. No wonder it had its hooks in you so long before you bought it!
Super cool Lotus. Love the 928 in the garage too.... had a 84 928S as my daily driver for almost 10 years in the late 90s ear 2000s..... fond memories of the road trips... flat out in 5th gear on I-40 across the panhandle of TX at 2AM on my way to San Diego was awesome.... not so fond memories of the waterpump and timing belt maintenance... nor the electrical system that failed at the most interesting times..... always keep a few jumper wires in the center console for the fuel pump and headlight relays...😅
I have a 2002 and want to do that gearbox swap. I looked and couldn't find anyone making the hardware/adapters for it so please share when you have those details. Interesting thing about those oil cooler lines you say do not drain, in the back of the Lotus service manual in the service notes section KE-5 the last line of the description says 'Due to the significant volume of oil held in the oil cooler circuit, it is recommended to purge the cooling system when changing the oil.' This is not in the oil change section of the manual and they also provide no instructions on how to '..purge the cooling system...' Appreciate you sharing your Esprit content!
I think the front wheel can be repaired perfectly if you find a specialist, they can add in material and heat treat as needed. Just comes down to cost. For the axle leaks, its likely the run out on the shaft going through the transmission seal is poor (or the bearing inside has too much wear and not perfectly keep the shaft concentric), you could pop them out and have a good shop CNC lathe/grind them to remove the runout, might fix the continuous leaking. The turbo drain tube clamps could be swapped for spring clamps which will maintain a constant force during expansion/contraction and age so won't need manually tightening.
Everyone should have the blessings of pride inasmuch that we appreciate these gifts. Eye also had everything. Now, it's all gone. But man it was cool hand I'm sew grateful to have had that opportunity! Enjoy she's a real beauty hand a bit more🤗
I love these midweek videos showing other Aspects of what you do other than just disassembling bad motors!! The Porsche and BMW rebuild videos are some of my favorites.. Also we'd love to see more Of how you operate your business Day today and the ends and out of that industry As I am an owner of a similar a lot smaller scale set up!Keep up the amazing work I'm always here to watch the next video you post!!!
I really love that lotus it's one of my favorite if I win the lottery cars that I would buy. Always love videos with it, and I appreciate how you take care of it
I remember seeing a few of these Esprit’s at the old Lotus Dealership off Mid Rivers every once in a while, was always a treat to see one. Still haven’t seen yours in person yet, maybe one day I’ll catch you out and about in it lol.
Greetings from Kansas City! I've loved the Lotus Esprit since way back in the 80's, but especially the later body style and V8. In my book, it is one of the most beautiful sportscar designs in the entire history of automobiles and I appreciate you sharing your Esprit experiences with your viewers. Thanks!!
No, not true may have been true in the 60s, 70s and 80s but in 1989 Ford Motor Company bought Jaguar and improved much on their electronics. Jaguar always had good engines just about electronics.
Eric, Very inspirational for a new 2001 owner. Love the car. "Cutting my teeth" as they say. Your chassis is way nicer than mine. I need more parts sources. No Regrets and a great driver.
That is a beautiful Lotus. Fifty years ago a friend of mine had a ‘67 Lotus Europa. It was very low, came up to my waist. I await your video on the transmission swap. It will be a huge improvement. British cars, you have to love them.
Once a year is about my schedule for my 1990 Geo Storm. Only 93k miles & I bought it used at 30k for $3.5k great bargain! It is close to perfect with all new a/c, stuts, tires & stereo. Runs like new doesn't leak or burn oil! It is my collector antique🤣🤔🤷🎉
Personally I enjoy the change of pace and the idea that not all sports cars are the same in terms of TCOS. 4K video of the suspension elements also ended up being nice reference for a 3d model I'm working on too.
Hey Eric. For oil filters mounted like that why not fill the new one with fresh oil so it doesn't take so long to fill the oil galleries and build pressure? That's what I do.
-At 8:27 we see one of the turbos. My first adventure with a car was an '85 Volkswagen Scirocco turbo, which had a single IHI RHB5 unit set for 6 psi boost with no intercooler. A the time I thought it was insanely tiny! Today my spouse's 2020 MB GLE350 2.0T has a turbo that looks even smaller, yet the little bastard makes 22 psi boost and propels the 4300 pound truck down the road like there is a 454 big block under the hood! Holy ben-wa balls Batman!
That Renault transmission was the reason they stopped making Esprits - eventually they just couldn't get any more. I think it also features the joy of M9 and M7 bolts used by pretty much no one else ever (apart from Citroen of course). Must be fun when one escapes.
I L-O-V-E the LTS content. This was the original reason I joined and found out that the motor breakdown vids are also quite entertaining (while I always also learned a bit from you). Thanks a lot for your effort, it is appreciated! If there is more LTS content - also appreciated a lot (together maybe with your Porsche - not sure if you still have it?). Back when I had my '92 Corrado SLC that I what I told people. A humm at idle, a small Detroit V8 sound at mid RPM and a feral inline six scream at high rpm!
I owned a 97 Esprit and the Renault transmission was the weak spot. Even with linkage adjusted it would not shift quickly. And oh, yeah, the timing belt skipped a few teeth and dropped all the valves on the right bank but that's another story Still I loved the car and wish I still had it.
I owned 3 lotus a few years back, they where all from 1977, esprit, eklat and elite, all 4 cylinders, those cars are amazing and fun, I love your lotus is gorgeous 👏👏👏👏
I had a distant connection with this model. It had cable gear change due to the V8 blocking route to rear gear box, the 4cyl had rods and links. The V8 may have been re-engineered to take rods but I doubt it. The OEM cables will probably be difficult to obtain.
That's okay that it's just a simple maintenance video, аfter all it's a midship sports car, not your regular vehicle. I enjoy watching those even just getting serviced, to compare 'em (mechanics-wise) to regular front-engined ones or to my slow little MR-S.
I do the two handed oil filter tighten as well. Never had a problem with it, and it makes it a lot easier to take off later. Sometimes can do that by hand as well. Just hate how my dodge ram has the filter right over the rack. Because that never makes a mess
I know, isn't that the worst design? I used to lay a bunch of rags and towels across the top but it still seemed to make a mess. Now I pre drain the filter before removing, I punch a hole through the bottom of the filter using a sharp ended 12" hollow tube. About 99% of the oil comes down the tube, then remove filter.
I think thats a thing of using 1 engine in more cars. Filling up the oil with the engine in the front would have been easy. There was an other y t er pointing out that the ignition distributor was close to the firewall (back of the engine) thus difficult to acces. But this engine was also used in a van with a dog house. But keep in mind, it was a race car company/designer/manufacturer that built this car like McLaren. All for speed, handling etc. Bad luck if it needs tons of time to get to change parts. Building cars these days is an y route. 1 leg drive train 2nd leg chassis built up and at the junction they are joined. Certain repairs could work the best/quickest if you separate them and thus create easier acces increasing the repair time.
Guess what I get to do tomorrow!? I get to change the oil and filter on my '14 Porsche Cayman S! Fortunately, I have a Bend-Pak Quick Jack in my garage, so this won't be more than a one hour job. Great video. Now, about that 928 in the background.....
a few more things to consider are a Brake Fluid flush and if your car has it flush the power steering too ..these both use a oil/fluid that attracts water ..my power steering lines rusted from the inside ..cars last a lot longer these days different maintenance things need to be done to keep them running without problems ...
Keep this up bro, It doesn't matter if it's a massive engine tear down, or if you feel like fully detailing a rust bucket.. this content works and i'd assume most of us goofballs are here just to get better insight on how folks work on their vehicles.

I bought a 2000 with 4k on it in 2002, fulfilling a childhood dream, and had it for 2.5 years. Tremendously fun car!
Are you kidding! this video was super exciting! Any content with your lotus is exciting to me.
Only just realised you have video's other than the engine strip-downs, really great to see this one, always liked the Esprit, I even like the colour.

I was today years old when I discovered you've got an Esprit V8. What a fantastic car & a real pleasure to see you making videos about it!
The Esprit V8 is one of the best looking cars. I've wanted one since they came out!
Agreed I saw one when I was a kid and was blown away I'll never forget that day
Nice! 16 minutes of calm collected peace in a world in turmoil.
This car is the reason I found your channel. The twin turbo v8 is the best last version of a great car.

finally some more videos on the lotus, love the car man keep it up 👍👍
If you fill the oil filter before installing, the engine will develop oil pressure much faster than an empty one.
Hey, my son owned a lotus v8 too, I also owned 1999 but I sold it 2 years ago (same yellow)
My son is excited to hear that you are going to convert your leaking transmission to a porsche.
I Sent him this video.
That car looks amazing underneath. Nice hardware!
Good episode! Having kept my MG alive for 28 years now, I’ll add my plug for British cars. 😊
That Lotus sounds absolutely amazing! Very Dodgy, lol
That car is beautiful and sound really great!! I watch so many of ur videos and really enjoy watching u tear engines down and would really enjoy doing that. I work in collision repair so I don't get to have the fun of tearing down engines. Love ur channel!!
A good advice is to fill the oil filter before mounting. Creating oil pressure sooner.
Is this a "Rainman Ray" vs "I do cars" deal😂😂😂. My two favorite channels. You two need to collab.
I thought the exact same thing. Eric is doing a maintenance video and Ray just posted an engine autopsy. We are getting crossover content now. Love the Lotus.

Sounds lovely 👌🏻
Always had a big soft spot for these
Keep on posting. I love these bonus submissions. They always make my day. Thank you!

Such a cool car!!
Can’t wait for video of tranny upgrade!!!
Keep up the good work, Eric
Beautiful piece of machinery and, as usual, an educational and entertaining video. Thanks
I really love that lotus it's one of my favorite if I win the lottery cars that I would buy. Always love videos with it, and I appreciate how you take care of it
The aluminum rads seem to always leak. The best is to have the original radiator recored.

Nice looking lotus. Nothing wrong with British cars. I have two jaguars I love driving them. They’re fun cars.
Lots wrong with British car actually
LOL! British cars have the worst reputation. Chinese made cars seem to have fewer complaints 😂

I absolutely love that car!!! That yellow is perfect for that beauty.
Big fan of the variety on the channel lately
Great car looks relatively simple to work on and be great to see the upgrades.
