    EASTSHADE! Welcome back you guys, I'll be sure to keep a close eye on the devlogs.
    Edit: I love the balance changes, I actually got bored of Stardew because I just had to do a task again and again. If there's gonna be some magic to tweak it, I'll be looking forward to it.

    Finally youtube's showing me something that I do want to see!
    I'm 100% into your non-combat game design approach, looking forward to your game and might give EASTSHADE a try.
    As an aspiring game developer, I'd love to learn more about your game design and creative process. You know there's plenty of content out there speaking of "how hard indie game dev is" but you guys are a small team that haven't compromised your vision to ship a quicker-more-commercial game.
    So I'd like to hear more about how you're doing it

    Excellent work Danny and team!! I’ve been following you guys on Twitter and I’m always excited to see the updates on this project :D
    As for the community question, my position might be a little different than most here I imagine, having already released quite a few games and struggling to find my footing in terms of sales/sustainability. What advice would you give to someone who is trying to be better at marketing upcoming/existing games on Steam?

  • @lizisalive
    @lizisalive 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Thanks for showing your progress on the game development! All of this is very exciting since Eastshade was such an amazing game.
    You mentioned a casting call for voice acting at the very end of development. Is this normally an open call (even for those without cited VA experience) or mainly for established VAs?

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thank you for watching and the kind words! Casting call is open, but it's a remote self audition where you record yourself and you will need it production quality. Not going to lie, typically only the established VAs have the chops and the at-home production quality required. But we judge mostly on the audition file itself so it's not out of the question that we'd select someone with no experience if their audition slaps!

  • @samon101
    @samon101 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I have Songs of Glimmerwick wishlisted for so many months now, it's nice to hear about its development.
    I just have a question about the magic in your game: Although I absolute love the music aspect of it, by this video only I feel like it's just like "keys to other areas" in metroidvanias. What I mean by that is instead of being a tool I can use freely (like the power-ups in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom) that Earth spell you showcased seemed more like something that can only be used in specific areas to create a predetermined path (like in a metroidvania).
    This way instead of magic being something cool and free that I can use and combine to see its efects on the world, they would be more like keys: "oh no these 3 areas are locked until I have the Earth spell", "oh no, to complete this mission I need a magic that can levitate me into a higher ground, but I can only use this magic in like 4 different locations".
    I understand if this is the approach you chose, but do you have anything more to say about the magic in your game?

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thanks for the support! Some of the spells are systemically useful like the rain cloud spell which you can just cast anywhere. But some of the spells are keys to locks adventure game style. One of the difficulties with making systemically useful spells is you have to design the entire game from the ground up to accommodate for them, and it makes the "grand garden" style of world design very difficult. The whole "these 3 areas are locked until I have the Earth spell" is precisely how some of the spells are used. Environmental impasses are basically our greatest goals, rewards, and progress for the player in our games. But I totally understand the appeal to the more systemic approach! But yeah we're making an adventure game with lock and key style impasses.

    I really love all those effects with the shaders and particles you made as a tech art.
    Any tips on how to get started creating such visuals?

    Living the dream! I am working on my first game and I am hoping it will not be a flop so I can at least get away with a small salary and work full time on game 2. Worked with web development for over 20 years so I have some head start with programming and design skills. But for every indie hit there are so many indie game devs that fail, which is very disheartening.

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have a steam page, pay attention to your wishlist count. It's a relatively reliable indicator of future success. The games that succeed are not random. If you can make a product that competes with the top 10% of a genre on every level: production value, design, polish, scope, marketing assets, scope of campaign, etc, it's my opinion you can reliably expect to sell like the top 10% of that genre. Almost every game I've seen fail has failed because the product was not competitive with the titles in the revenue bracket they were hoping to be in.

      @eastshadestudios8335  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the kind words! The problem with ultra wide support for a fixed camera game like this is it totally screws up all the environment framings. Like we only art to a certain point beyond the treeline and the ultrawide either has to A. be more zoomed in which is kind of a bummer for ultrawide or B. we have to design all our environments with ultrawide in mind and that's just the wrong focus with almost all players having 16:9

    How do you go about finding and expanding your team as an indie dev or studio? Especially your core team members like the game designer and game artist / coder? Usually I think games start with 2 people so how do you evaluate who's the best person to be the other core member?

    • @eastshadestudios8335
      @eastshadestudios8335  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hooray hey thanks for the WL! We love and play violent games as much as the next person. But sometimes we dream about virtual worlds where the thing you do there is something other than kill everything. Have you ever thought about how strange it is that 98% of the people you encounter in most RPG fantasy worlds are trying to kill you?
      Combat is so ubiquitous that if you make a trailer for a game people will ask "You didn't show combat. What's the combat like?" It's just assumed you will be killing people because that's what you do in games where you control an avatar. You can make a game loop about anything, but almost everyone chooses to make a primary game loop about roughly the same thing. So our mission statement for our studio is to make virtual worlds where you're not just there to kill.

    I’ve pretty much given up on gaming, partly because I find combat is handled really poorly. Like how in Skyrim, if I died I would just keep reloading the save over and over again until I got it right. Dying adds literally nothing to the game except breaking immersion, so why bother to add it in at all?
    This, however, along with Eastshade, are exceptions and I certainly will be buying this the moment it comes out. I’m sick of all the violence and nastiness in the real world, and this is exactly the kind of escapism I love.
    This is never going to happen but I would LOVE it if your team managed to get access to the “My Little Pony” rights. I think I’d probably never come out of playing that game!

    will be there day one for this, eastshade still has my favorite open world design of any game. rly appreciate yalls priorities towards worldbuilding and narrative rpg questing over the typical grinding loops like farming, uve created a rly distinct voice within the sometimes unhelpfully broad "wholesome" or "cozy" games wave
    i have a potentially over ambitious question for now or a future devlog. while i dont know much about the setting of glimmerwick, one of the things i remember most about eastshade is the believably kind character of its society and people. part of that believability meant that you occasionally encountered the unkind or rough edges of both, its not a perfect utopia, but theres a distinctly welcoming and peaceful culture. is the setting of glimmerwick similar, and are there any specific considerations you make for the idealistic parts of the setting and characters? and the harsher parts as well?

    This looks really cool! For the sake of asking more questions, I'm curious about your thoughts on handling peril without a combat system. Do you avoid making the player feel they're in danger at all, or are there creative ways you've found to provide non-violent consequences (and solutions) to perilous situations?

      Thank you! Haha we missed Loom but both Jac and I have looked at it since starting work on Glimmerwick. And I enjoy Brian Moriarty's talks and interviews.

    Well you made on to my radar now. I'm always yearning for non violent games and this seems like a perfect game for me. Maybe I'll re-install Eastshade in the meantime. Game wishlisted and I hope to get to play it soon!

    I really love the looks and feels of this beautiful game, I wish you all the best guys, I've been studying (on my own) unity for about 2 years now, I made a few little games and I followed a lot of tutorials and courses, but every time I try to code on my own I feel stuck, but recently I managed to gather my thoughts more clearly and I became more understanding to the logic of things in C#, even though I don't memories all of the syntax but at least I know what to do to make a function triggering another or multiple functions, I have a long road ahead and I'm still learning and definitely stumbling on your beautiful game is a really an inspiring material to me, sorry for making this long but I wanted to share my thoughts of game developing as solo developer, if you have any advices please let me know, thanks

    As someone that is getting into gamedev, I was wondering why you choose to do a 2D like game but do it in 3D? Instead of going true 2D? What are the benefits doing it like that? Im experimenting with both 2D and 3D and trying to figure out what's best for me but Im realising that there is so much that I havent yet considered.

      this is a great question! Going to try to answer in next devlog. But I have written an article in the past that probably answers a lot! www.gamedeveloper.com/production/deep-dive-the-innovative-projected-2d-workflow-of-songs-of-glimmerwick

    Absolutely adored Eastshade, one of my favorite games of all time. Went into that game not knowing anything, and was so surprised at how expansive, and detailed the world was.
    I'm definitely thrilled about this game, and eagerly awaits exploring another world made by you guys.
    By the way, from watching this video, the game's feel and aesthetics, reminds me a fair bit of Wytchwood, another great game that I can highly recommend.

      Awe shucks thank you so much! And cheers! Makes us very happy to hear! And I looove wytchwood! Fantastic game! Yes they use a pop-up 2d style. They also happen to use the same animation middleware as us (spine). Funnily enough we were showing right next to them at PAX one year toward the end of Eastshade development. We already knew we were going to be making Glimmerwick next so we were very interested in their games art pipeline and asking all about it haha.
