That is what the U.S. looked like in my youth! Very nostalgic film! Triggers many memories.
I was coming east bound over Flagstaff one morning around 3:00 am. in Jan or Feb of 1988 in a 2 truck convoy, and it was snowing so hard I couldn't even tell if I was on the highway (I-40)! I was a young driver and the driver behind me was a vet, he told me on the radio to turn off my headlights and leave my running lights on and I would be able to tell where I was at on the road, and sure enough it worked! We were going 15 - 20 mph all the way up that mountain in the middle of a desert, and about every 10 seconds or so, I would turn off my headlights to be able to see the road. About half way up there was about 2 feet of unplowed snow, and we had no chains on our company trucks, but we kept pushing through. Mr. Parsons from West Virginia told me on the radio, it was snowing so hard that my tracks were covered up by the time he got to them, and when I shut of my headlights I could see him around 100 yards behind me, turning his lights off and on, so he could see the contour of he road. He got on the radio and said, whatever you do, don't stop until we get to the pickle park at the top, and that is where we found plowed road again, I got a cup of coffee out of the machine during our break at the top of Flag, and to this day, I think that was one of the best cups of coffee I ever had! I give thanks and praise to our Father in Heaven for having Angels look after us, especially that morning! I hope this story would save the life of someone one day! God Bless everyone!!! 🙏✝
The basics are never outdated! Enjoyed the old rigs and cars. I say this to everyone...if 4 wheelers would ride in a big rig for one week they would change their driving habits!

I was checking out the cars in that film. I was seeing cars from 1963. Its funny how back then the truck driver, mail man , gas station attendant and milk man all wore those peek caps and people in office jobs worse fedora's. Most of the tips in the film are still relevant today in 2022. Keep a safe distance and take it easy braking and accelerating.

My pa drove quad axle dump trucks in wisconsin for like 20 years... I rode along every weekend for 10 years.. I give truckers the most courtesy possible.. I wave and Im grateful.. They are the people who give you everything you have..
This needs to be shown in modern truck driving training.

Yes , I've been there and have done that , and with double trailers, we would do some chaining then climb back into the cab to thaw , and then have at it again.
@gregoryj.m.8985 If you want to get wet, cold and dirty, that's the way to do it for sure! If you know the weather conditions are going to mandate chaining up ahead of time, just wait it out, until weather and road conditions improve, as you're gonna burn up a lot of time and nerves traveling in those conditions.
Always keep your rig between the ditches.
And the shiney side up and the rubber side down .

I love this channel! All kinds of great videos, most of which predate me by at least a decade. Sometimes it's fun to just see if I can identify any of the cars. Other times I'm glued to the subject matter. Either way, these old clips are entertaining and many times educational, just getting to see how vehicles were constructed that aren't around anymore. or how things were (sometimes not) done. I think some of it might be the just the campy feel to them.
I've been watching this channel for quite a while now, but I'm finally subscribed.
Driving a truck is such a thankless job, but everything we eat, wear and use is delivered by truck it makes our modern comfortable lives possible.
Most jobs are... no one even knows the farm that food you haul came from... the old man whose gotten up past 50 years of his life and devoted all his days and years tending that corn, beans, meat we now have in our fridge... such is life.
It once was a high profile profession. Over time, outlaws caused it to be more of a degrading carrier. There is such a need for drivers its crazy and they will put almost anyone in a truck that can get a CDL. Most are not professional or care about the profession today they are wheel holders. Also regulations have made it so hard to be a trucker that most people have no desire to get into it. The rates haven't kept up with the times either. It is really disappointing that trucking is a thankless job when its one of the most important jobs in the country. A driver shouldn't struggle to make ends meet!

I agree with other persons comments I grew up in the 1950s and I don’ t remember 18 wheelers or less axles driving with shiny shoes especially in northern Canada you would freeze your feet in the winter months I remember trucking back in later 1990s in. the Yukon ( northern Canada ) in January and it was 61 below zero when my running partner and I left Whitehorse, Yukon. had just delivered a. load of groceries at. a store. there believe me that’s awful hard on. equipment and you make sure your are dressed for these conditions always scared at that temperature anything could happen. even twist a driveshaft off on the truck and always have a winter front ( cover. front on grille ) and. cover on the belly pan. ( cover on oil pan and cover some on bottom of. engine and watch for herds of caribou in the mountains and steep hills on. the trip up from Edmonton,Alberta Canada too your destination of Whitehorse, Yukon. and back too Edmonton too the truck. terminal / Have a good day. In 2018 today’s drivers can’t speak English non the less think about driving in snow. I’ve been driving 30 years and damn has the industry gone down hill fast. Great video though!

Neat video. I love seeing R-series trucks when they were new. I'm not sure where they get the stopping distance figures, though. It takes a lot more than 25 feet to stop any truck going 20 mph, empty or otherwise.
I've drove truck over 41 years and there is no 1 way to drive in snow or rain every situation is different

I have never seen a truck driver wearing polished uniform shoes before.
Liberty Tree now days the uniform of the truck driver is sweat pants and flip flops,police officers all think they are on the swat team or so etching with there tactical military looking uniforms
They use to.. before my time. They wore ties hats , polished shoes.. My dad drove well into the 80's he started in the mid 50's with Mobil Oil. spent 36 years with that company & he was always neat & polished

I do. I marveled at the big rigs, the drivers in uniform, cool hats with shiny visors. Flash lights to pass, a friendly wave. None of that today thats for sure, slobs with no quality or sense of pride. Flash your lights or wave and your met with anger or a swerve.

Anybody remember the front brake limiting switch??? A good thing they did away with, also sanders in front of the drive axles. I remember my dads trucks all had that ..
Winter driving I HATE IT, and I'm olny a cabbie!, there have been many of mornings or nights for that matter that I got home and thanked the Boss upstairs ( God) that I made it home in one piece. And being upset with myself that I got stuck on the road in the first place!

Modern day pre trip inspection- Last night when walking away from the truck, was it on fire? No? Pre trip completed.

3 railers are always a joy to hang. I could not imagine wearing those Street shoes which would not even be permissible now since they're not safety shoes. Your feet would be frozen by the time you hung the iron on the tractor and a drag chain or two. Did the Washington Cascades pulling doubles since 1996 till the end of last year don't miss it a bit.
Two things we have now that they probably did not have then are much better tires and locking differentials those have saved my bacon more than once in the mountain passes.
My chains on my truck are for decoration. Meaning if dot wants to see them.. There they are. But if chain law is in effect its time to park it and go to bed.not getting out wallering around in the cold wet snow wearing my ass out and then im at risk of getting hit by another vehicle. Not worth risking my life or destroying my equipment. Loads can be rescheduled.

I did the same thing when I drove OTR when it time to chain up I park ed it only use my chains was i got stuck i pushed the chains has far as i can under the wheel to get me out

Loadstar with an 8v71, mine starts and runs like a champ. Pulls like a ten ox team too. These new trucks couldn't pull a greasy string out of a hens asshole, and you never know what engine they got in them, worse is they got an autoshift in them that drops a gear when you least expect it slowing down in the snow and suddenly you're figure skating with a fat lady, that's always fun. I'd love that binder in the video, not red though!!

I'd like to think of how great it is with the advances in modern technology, but ... I'll think I'm gonna stick with those good ol' reliable tire chains... probably the only thing in this video that looks & works exactly the same today as they did back then.

a product avaiable here in Scandinavia is On-Chain / Insta-Chain, a clever invention that by the press of a button sling chain pieces in front of the wheels as you drive and almost make up for regular chains. Sandbox mounted infront of the drive wheels is also a thing here, not as common though.

No engine brakes in those days , and alot of the rigs were big gas engines .
I drive a 2019 Intertrashional ( Not By Choice ) and I'll bet the one on this video probably runs and rides better than the piece of crap I drive.
I always liked the roominess of Internationals. I drove LTL for awhile, also liked the Freightliner. I know guys would say Kenworth is the best, but the one we had was brand new and kept going into DPF mode and that truck stranded us all more than any of our trucks in the fleet (about 10) combined). Plus I couldn't stand how small inside KW's are.

On my pickup, all the turn signals work, but one of the lights doesn't come on when you turn on the four ways. Same bulb, different switch.
Since there’s no more professional drivers anymore it’s a free for all.

What information is revealed when one kicks a tire? Have I been wrong all these decades? I should have been kicking tires all along? All I ever do is maintain tire pressure.

i do it everytime i am stopped for a coffee, break, unloading etc. i do a walk-around to see everything is good to go, common sense to do for skilled proud truckdrivers. fits the bill with the 3 hours mark pretty good.

Depends on Route, if your doing fish from Norway to Spain than that's multiple day journey, if you do hamburg to Bremen than i see where your going.

About 20 yrs ago I had a cell phone a near whiteout occured and sleet came down called wife& said be a few mins extra we lived in country,Some idiot roared around me.I told wife he was asking for it less than a mile Mr Speed was in median I could see bottom of car. Gotta go gonna call police for idiot!. Saw same thing Kentucky about 1969 guy passed had young in laws in car bad snow...this guy probably hurt...Slow DOWN!.

16:13 minutes Doesn't make any Sense or even common sense, When a uneducated narrator said Be sure not to use all the Brakes meaning all the Air pressure in either the service Tank or Supply tank or Both, than earlier in this video at 6:58 minutes Testing the air brakes in a Static position & Fan the brake in cab pedal down to 45psi & 25psi On Air pressure Gauge than trailer brake should apply meaning Grab on the Drums if proper manual Slack adjuster is Set to the proper setting 1/4 turn Back from full seet or tight on the Drum Looking through that oblong shape port hole in the Dust cover, So that's the thing terrible misinformation. Plus in those days Probably no Air Dryer in the system So lots of headaches and the thing wouldn't even leave where you parked the thing hot the shift before, the best plan in the winter time is too not use the brakes at all when possible, l learned this from
Tree length & Super B Log hauling experience green as grass from 1994 thru 2001 just use your head , the Environment your in a Jake or mack speak Retarder the gear selection for road speed and you never touch the 3rd pedal ever in the cab even at the oncoming Stop sign or car sitting at a red light ,thus not having any or all types of sudden freeze up Brake stuck with the introduction of Hot wet Air coming from the start of all air brake equipped vehicles the engine and if you have a Bad Air governor that just adds to moisture going through the whole air system including a Wet tank or dryer. The best knowledge is the True old timers who's been there done that over & over again and getting paid to do it. Money talks & BS walks.
