  • I had a lot of good questions regarding working bison and bison handling system after tearing down the old dairy barn. Here I explain why I think it's important to have really good bison handling systems to keep your animals safe when working them.

In my long life, one of the most helpful things I try to keep in mind is that no matter how small or how large the endeavor, absolutely everything has a learning curve. No exceptions! That helps me feel like less of an idiot when I'm trying something new, and I'm always trying something new 😉. Thanks again!

That was a sad story about Lucy, I'm sure it was devastating for that to happen. I imagine anyone raising bison would agree that having the proper handling equipment is tops on the list for their safety, and yours too. I hope you're able to locate all the equipment you need soon and get it ready for their next rounds of vaccinations, worming, preg checks, etc.!! Love having these updates. I am enjoying learning about these magnificent animals! See ya next time!

I can only imagine trying to find a good shute system... I know the one dad had built just for our cattle was crazy. At least you have a good foundation to start off on. We ended up using huge casing pipe and digging down and cementing them in ground and then welding the (headgate) system to those pipe which was reinforced with 1inch pipe on the outside like a cage around the headgate. Main thing is sounds like your doing your research on what is going to work best for you and your heard. So interesting to learn about the bison. Thanks for sharing.

I would check into a heavy duty silencer chute. They make both hydraulic and manual chutes. Reasonable price for what you get. They are cattle chutes but they are built heavy. I looked at a different one of your videos and it would be heavier than that gray one you had. Hydraulic is the way to go. You have to have extra long lines and put your hydraulic pump away from the working area so you don't spook em with the noise. Just a recommendation from ND. Love your videos.

A chute (or squeeze) is a specific piece of machinery that goes at the end of the corral system that you drive the bison into. It holds them still, keeps them and you safe, so that they can be ‘worked’, vetted, checked, inoculated etc. It isn’t a thing you can just weld together. They cost in the thousands and to work bison they’ll need an extra heavy duty one. Bison are not like cows. You get them cornered and they go completely wild. 😄 Dusty will get used to providing the ‘Bison for dummies’ kind of info here so we can all learn. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️

The good thing about the buffalos is the trust you have in the person who takes care of them on a daily basis. The light calves and the low body weight of the buffalo calves must be maintained in any case, so that there are no complications during birth. Therefore it is very important that the buffalo heifers calve for the first time at the age of 3 and not before, because they are not able to supply the calf with milk properly and have to grow up themselves. Because buffalo cows are not fully grown until they are 40 months old. Therefore it is better to give the young buffalo Heifers a little more time than to cover the buffalo Heifers too early... Good luck to you.

Glad you clarified that "vaccinations". I had thought that it was illegal to do such a thing. And I love the idea of no "additives", hormones, etc. It's one of the things I like about bison meat. Something I've seen with bison herds in NY, is they insist on separating calves from cows and raising them separate from adults--like cattle are handled. Not sure that's a good thing.
