@@kurowasanabe it’s more like, if you just starting out and have no cards, might as well buy a box to build a collection since you won’t know where to start outside of buying a deck online. If you are more experienced and know how to play and build and already have an overflowing collection of cards, you only need to buy singles from new sets that will empower the decks you already have. Of course if you are inspired to build a new one from a box or set then go ahead and buy and see what you get. As the consumer you get lots of choice and can make a game out of buying it, of course just know that cost and your budget.

@@Fafnir_92 There's a difference between just being against a company and recognizing when that company does something shitty. Prof isn't entitled to a preview, but he has always been fair in his evaluations and he is honest when Hasbro does something greedy. We should not accept the argument that someone needs to act as a marketing arm of WotC for them to be recognized with a preview. The previews help everyone, it helps content creators get more views and grow their channel, it helps WotC get eyes on new cards without having to make videos themselves (not to mention how few people actually sub to the Magic channel), and it gets players hyped for a new set. Don't side with the corporations, they are almost always in the wrong.

Joshua Daily I’d watch the shit out of that. Especially if it was just a single 10-hour video all shot in one take in which we get a behind-the-scenes look of the Professor slowly succumbing to full a mental breakdown. The final thirty minutes should just be him speaking in tongues while one at a time, ripping each card in half. It would definitely add a fresh new element to the show.

You're not alone. For all the good information in his videos, there is something a little hypocritical about "playing the booster box game," which is really a glorified box opening, then insisting that others buy singles. Never forget, this is a man who had to quit the game in the past.

Another use for Double Major is as a counter-counter spell type of effect. If an opponent counters your important creature, you can then cast Double Major in response to still get one copy of the creature. However, you'd have to not hold priority trying to copy your creature spell before the opponent counters it, or you lose both copies.
If your opponent enters some weird bluff game with you because they think you have double major, they're already gonna lose that specific battle. If you start playing some nonsense about "any responses?!?!?!" every time you cast a creature spell, I'm still just gonna wait until you cast the thing I want countered and call the bluff.

Hey Prof - great video. My favorite commander card of this set is:
Rushed Rebirth {B}{G} - Instant
Choose target creature. When that creature dies this turn, search your library for a creature card with lesser mana value, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.
This card is a 2 mana instant speed pseudo birthing pod effect, but it can trigger off *opponents* creatures. In your typical 4 person commander game, just holding this spell back and waiting for someone's avenger of zendikar, consecrated sphinx, or big commander to eat removal lets you cheat a pretty decent creature into play yourself. Also lets you pull some interesting moves if you have a toolboxy type deck (like Meren or Karador). Best part is, this card is currently less than a dollar.
Flinging my body of research token at my opponent is the closest I will ever get to throwing my deck at their face and I want it so badly.

Hi Professor, I think this is my first time commenting, but I follow you since years and years ago. I'm here just to say how respectful was your Keeps promotion about how is not a necesity, but a choise instead. I think more people need to hear something like that.

Double major might go in my kodama/sakashima list. I'm playing panharmonicon and dual nature. With those two and kodama out, with sakashima copying kodama, every permanent I put on the battlefield nets 6 kodama triggers. So I drop a progenitor mimic on sakashima, copying the mimic with double major. If I have other clones I will use those on the mimic as well. But let's say I don't. Now every upkeep I get to make two more Kodamas, which each net 3 triggers on their own. And trigger the other Kodamas. The tokens are zero cost so I will only be able to play lands off the triggers. I've got to have a couple kiora behemoth beckoners out to so I draw a card for each kodama I make.

I kind of wanted magma opus to be on here. In early game, in can give you a treasure, but when you can actually cast it for 8 mana you get:
1. 4 damage divided exactly how you want (to deal with light swarm creatures or one moderately tanky creature, or just hit them for 4)
2. Tapping two permanents (potentially cast it during an opponents turn to screw with their attacks/utilities or their mana)
3. Create a 4/4 elemental (to make a blocker)
4. Draw two cards (more card advantage)
All for 8 mana.
Hi, Prof:
Two cards I think should be on the list are Solve the Equation and Rushed Rebirth. I preordered a Wandering Archaic, Galazeth Prismari, Reconstruct History, and Conspiracy Theorist too, but Solve the Equation is a Merchant Scroll for another mana that can grab sorceries or a Spellseeker (Casually $30) but you aren't restricted to 2 cmc, sorry, 2 mana value. Rushed Rebirth I have less justification for except that you can target someone else's creature in response to your own removal, in response to a board wipe to be the first to rebuild, or even after declare blockers, and it puts your own threat directly on board.

I built a Simic deck around my very first commander "Vorel of the Hull Clade" (Double counters on target permanent) and the deck is filled with Artifacts and Enchantments that have Counter-based win cons. It lovingly got the name "Vorel and The Machine". Double Major could make that deck go from muscle car to Tesla Roadster...

Shandalar is a plane in the Magic multiverse that was made for the 1997 PC game called simply "Magic: The Gathering" but has also been known as "Shandalar" and "Magic: The Gathering Microprose." It was the last game that Sid Meier worked on before leaving to found the company "Firaxis Games." Shandalar was first used in the IRL card game in the 2010 core set, and the plane is also extremely rich in mana. (Wonder why Nicol Bolas never tried to annex it when trying to reach godhood?)
I'm surprised none of the mastery sorceries made the list, especially Ingenious Mastery.
In multiplayer, you have have to either speed ahead of everyone else or hide in second and sprint for the finish. If you're ahead, you can pay the full cost; if you're behind you create some goodwill politicking while helping topple the archenemy.

I pulled a foil extended border of approach the second son. It's a extremely interesting way to immediately win if you run a graveyard or regeneration deck

I got a Strixhaven box set as my first ever entrance into Magic. Then I got some WAY overpriced ($14.99...) 35-card theme booster packs from my Walgreens across the street (I know, I’m trying...).
I’m glad I got the box, but knowing what I know now, getting a box set was great as a newbie (imo), but I’m never wasting money on booster packs again until I get confident enough in my ability to do a draft format.
I’m now buying singles and a collector booster pack occasionally to flesh out the Strixhaven expansion and I’m loving it a lot more than opening a box of chance.
I really like Double Major. It’s aggressive when you want to clone and also serves as a fizzle for counters targeting your creature spells. Just so good.

Honest rules question -- can someone please point out why we can't use "Double Major" to copy something already in play? Or ...we can, but the optimal way to use it is to copy a creature spell on the stack?
My #1 pick was Beledros Witherbloom. It will go great in meren, muldrotha, heck even my Damia spellslinger likes this card as getting extra blockers will protect me and I am already running land untap effects like wilderness rec and seedborn muse.

If I'm playing a deck that's doing a thing, this'll just become an annoyance.
The only thing that struck me as cool, was this is good for decks that have difficulty against counterspells. If they don't pay the 2 you can counter their counter. Might be helpful for more aggro strategies that want to overrun your opponents and push through. Also makes their Cyclonic Rifts cost 9 mana or wind up being symmetrical.
But I can also imagine a special hell where this, Rhystic Study, and Smothering Tithe are out... A Grand Arbiter deck maybe lol 😂

For three green and three blue you get to annoy all your oppoenents while you count the number of cards in your library.
Double major is like spark double but without the +1/+1. But on the bright side, it's simic and costs two. How delightful.
Double Major combos with Illuna, Apex of Wishes' mutate trigger to get three nonland permanents out of your deck. One for the token copy that will resolve and mutate first, two for the original Illuna mutating, as the token clone and her count as separate triggers. This works the same way for all mutate creatures too, but Illuna's the only one that can guaranteed exploit this in commander. If this had been in Mono Blue I would've paired it with Vadrok, Apex of Thunder in a heartbeat.
I think i'll run Wandering Archaic / Explore in my Tinybones deck to give some more fuel for upkeep discard triggers, oppression etc. and to slow down with the Archaic
That card fits perfectly in my brew atleast.
As a literature professor: how do you feel about the Silverquill faction?
I'm earning my BA in English Lit next Spring and I love the mechanics and game philosophy presented in the silverquill cards. The flavor text and the art are also fantastic, and I love the seamless blending of literature and wizards (something I didn't know I needed more of!)

Wandering Archaic essentially has cycling: 3. Discarding it to your yard to be reanimated. This makes it even more powerful if you can get it out earlier.
To be honest one of my favorite card in this set is one that didn't make a cut to both of your list is Flamescroll Celebrant // Revel in Silence.
In my opinion great card to some burn decks. Ohhh you want to fetch a land, pay additional 1 life for it. I have unspent mana I will buff and hit you for 4 when i attack. I want to prevent you from winning the game in your next turn, no a problem. You want to combo with Thrasios/Kinan etc no a problem infinitive damage in your face.
my two suggestions would be crackle with power (11 mana to do 45 damage? i will thanks) and the 3 mana instant/sorcery tutor in blue (budget mystical tutor? i will thanks!) but otherwise seems legit. that 5 mana colourless card is gonna go up fast- goes in every deck!

I was kinda surprised that the mythic red triple X spell wasn’t on here as a great Commander piece, I would’ve thought that with all commanders ramp and mana combos it would make the list.
Reconstruct History can get creatures as long as they have one of the other types. Obviously that includes artifact creatures and enchantment creatures, but it also includes MDFCs with a front face that's one of the five types. As a long time Boros Commander masochist, I am *so* excited for this set and that's a card very high on my list.
Galazeth creates a (quasi) mana rock when he comes into play because of the interaction between his two abilities. Disappointed you didn't mention that.
I've won *a few* games with body of research, I also have shadowspear in my deck so it's kind of unstoppable with trample/lifelink, but once someone had two planes walkers out and I don't know exactly what mechanics they used but they used it from my library and ended up with two 223/223 fractal creatures... I conceded when they casted life link on one of them, lol.

This should be a series for each set! I lost my Job when the pandemic Closed the place. Now I have a tighter budget and a guide on some of the picks to look out for is awesome! I can pick a few of my favorite and keep to a budget!
I bought a pre release kit. Got the other dragon I wanted, along with a bunch of simic cards. I pretty much got all the cards I wanted from the set. Except maybe one or two collector's packs for the japanese art. I only want one. I was lucky. Even got blue suns zenith which will fit into my x mana cost deck.
I just finished the Strixhaven commander decks video, and was instructed to watch another. So I saw this one, and decided to come here and say that I have two Japanese draft boxes preordered :)
magma opus probably deserves a shout for being (probably?) the highest impact proactive instant for all of the cards that let you cheat instant spells, but not sorceries, with.
Not ironic comment, that ad for Keeps was one of the most body positive ads for a cosmetic product I've ever seen/heard. I know it's not the focus of the video, but that by itself got my appreciation
Echoing Equation is awesome in a similar way to Double Major. Turn your 10 soldiers into non-legendary Maja, Bretagard Protector. One trample anthem later you defeat all your oppponents.
I still think the Prismari and Lorehold dragons are swapped
Lorehold has been all about artifacts, while Prismari has had a special interest in casting spells, it would even work amazingly with their respective commanders.
The Prismari one cares about casting spells. It sure would be dope if the Prismari dragon casted a free spell when it attacked.
The Lorehold commander cares about artifacts and bringing them back. It sure would be dope if the Lorehold dragon turned all your artifacts into mana rocks.

Does copying an escaped uro spell works the way Prof expects? Is the copy considered escaped?
Edit: I got this answer from a judge: "a copy of an escaped spell isn't itself escaped," so 12:53 is just a glorified "UG: draw 1 gain 3" lol

My favorite is definitely Crackle with Power, but I was also putting the finishing touches on a Kaza X spells deck as it got spoiled so that might have affected my interest :P

Double Major is Cytoshape but fixed/tweaked. Cytoshape was an awesome card back in a niche Simic deck, back the in the day. I miss it :(

What? None of the white cards that the color really needed? Though a bunch of them are in the Commander decks, Elite Spellbinder and Strict Proctor are pretty huge. Personally, I think Mavinda has some potential as well, recursion for instants/sorceries? Even having to pay 8 more for ones that don't target your creatures can be worth it late game.

prof, if you were to make a pest commander, would you use beledros or vex?? i know vex is the more common answer, but beledros just feels better to me. either way, a pest deck tech would be cool!
