    Ian Bremmer's Quick Take:
Hi, everybody. Ian Bremmer here and a Quick Take on the back of a staggering announcement that President Biden is no longer standing for reelection. No one thought that President Biden should have stood for reelection after he won the first time. Certainly, nobody believed that he was going to be able to serve a full four years of a second term.
That was becoming increasingly obvious to Biden himself, because he saw what rank and file members of the Democratic Party were saying, how they were pulling. The internal polls that the White House has been getting over the last 48 hours were devastating for Biden, not just a loss, but a landslide that would have led to the Democrats getting wiped out in the House and Senate as well, would probably lead to the Republicans ending the filibuster. Biden ultimately a lot later than a lot of people wanted, but nonetheless ultimately standing down, standing aside, strongly endorsing Kamala Harris, his vice president, for the presidential nomination, and to defeat Trump come November. It is certainly a very long way to go. People were saying it's late. We have 107 days to go left in this election.
That's an eternity in US politics. It is longer than most elections in democracy actually occur for the entire campaign. And so, I mean, if you look at that, look at just how much might happen in a race where Trump and Biden have been historically both very unpopular, both seem to be far too old and unfit to serve as president for another term. Biden, the last numbers we saw in that were 74% of American voters saying that he was unfit to serve for another four years because of his age and increasing frailty. 49% of Americans said that about Trump. Now it's worse for Biden. But if Biden wasn't in the race, for Trump, that would be the worst that we'd ever seen.
And of course, now Biden isn't in the race and Trump is, which means that his age, his frailty, his incoherence when he makes statements, that is suddenly a big issue. It is immediately his largest vulnerability, even after the extraordinary ability of Trump to stand up and put his fist in the air and say, “fight, fight, fight” after an assassination attempt, a huge thing, but suddenly yet another piece of unprecedented history in the US.

The Republicans are fired up about their Peronist candidate. The Democrats are divided and dispirited. If they pull off the election counting, can they pull off the resulting civil unrest? OTOH, the Democrats have a decent track record in political violence, where as the Republicans have been mostly talk.

A day before yesterday, Biden said to Pelosi he was winning in the polls, and she demanded Biden get his campaign manager on the phone and show her the numbers. And Biden, the president did exactly what Pelosi said because she as former speaker commands tremendous power over the democratic party, president and all.
Make no mistake, Biden was forced out by party leadership. It's a nice story, Biden did it for the country. He literally tried everything he could to stay in until people like Pelosi said, "Sorry, the game is up, we can't drag this out any longer. You are out."

I was no Biden fan when he ran in 2020, but when he won the nomination, I adopted the slogan, “Joe Biden. He’s good enough.” Biden far exceeded my expectations. He took office amid chaos and showed an amazing ability to get things done to move our country forward. I supported his run for a 2nd term. Only after watching his post debate interviews did I begin to seriously doubt his ability to win the election. I personally know Biden 2nd term supporters and have seen scores online.

His model of the situation is fundamentally wrong in too many ways for this to be a very credible prediction - Biden's primary motivation was not selfless he was being selfish with regard to his reputation and legacy - Newsome and Whitmer just wouldn't even touch this mess even if you asked nicely, and that has nothing to do with name recognition and everything to do with their own political ambitions for the future which aren't served by getting involved here - Kamala is more of a liability than an asset in at least 8 key senate races, and she's not so bad as a person she's very decent but she doesn't have what it takes to really fight her case across 50 states (whatever her case is exactly, and being 'not trump' is a bit worn out now) - Trump on the other hand has the record, and he has vibes at his back especially after that miracle near death experience the man is on fire

I really want to believe that now that the age issue is gone for Democrats, that the obvious mental incpacity of Trump, as well as just how unpopular the ideas behind his campaign actually are, will cause support for him in the "non-cult" part of the electorate to collapse.

  • @ericwedin4154

It was not really a question about age, but quality of the brain in Biden’s case. Trump’s age should not be the central issue, but his agenda.
And Kamala is still a hopeless candidate, so not much had changed.

What the US really needs is someone young and new. There is plenty of TALENT within the DMC so let the process allow for the young to be part of the process. If Harris runs then I believe Trump will win. Harris is too connected to the Biden administration and that group have been covering up the real demise of Biden not only for weeks but many months. So there is a trust issue there. SOMEONE YOUNG SOMEONE NEW.

Harris did her job by supporting Biden. The Biden administration also did there's by supporting him. It was always up to Biden on whether he would step aside. To his credit and for the good of the country, he has. Harris is the most experienced and qualified to run because she has served as both a senator and VP. It also doesn't hurt that she's a woman of color and an age that's not too young or too old. I do agree that she needs to earn the nomination. Harris has expressed her willingness to do exactly that in he coming weeks and at the convention.

.All presidents worry about their place in history and Biden will be able to salvage something of his legacy by standing down now although it is far too late .But he will be blamed if Trump wins.

it's best that the Democratic party goes center left. Remember, approx. 50% of country has other priorities. To ignore those is divisive. In a democracy no has their cake and eats it too. Too be a party of inclusion, all views must be considered whether or not implemented fully or in part.
