Ian Bremmer's Quick Take:
Hi, everybody. Ian Bremmer here and a Quick Take on the back of a staggering announcement that President Biden is no longer standing for reelection. No one thought that President Biden should have stood for reelection after he won the first time. Certainly, nobody believed that he was going to be able to serve a full four years of a second term.
That was becoming increasingly obvious to Biden himself, because he saw what rank and file members of the Democratic Party were saying, how they were pulling. The internal polls that the White House has been getting over the last 48 hours were devastating for Biden, not just a loss, but a landslide that would have led to the Democrats getting wiped out in the House and Senate as well, would probably lead to the Republicans ending the filibuster. Biden ultimately a lot later than a lot of people wanted, but nonetheless ultimately standing down, standing aside, strongly endorsing Kamala Harris, his vice president, for the presidential nomination, and to defeat Trump come November. It is certainly a very long way to go. People were saying it's late. We have 107 days to go left in this election.
That's an eternity in US politics. It is longer than most elections in democracy actually occur for the entire campaign. And so, I mean, if you look at that, look at just how much might happen in a race where Trump and Biden have been historically both very unpopular, both seem to be far too old and unfit to serve as president for another term. Biden, the last numbers we saw in that were 74% of American voters saying that he was unfit to serve for another four years because of his age and increasing frailty. 49% of Americans said that about Trump. Now it's worse for Biden. But if Biden wasn't in the race, for Trump, that would be the worst that we'd ever seen.
And of course, now Biden isn't in the race and Trump is, which means that his age, his frailty, his incoherence when he makes statements, that is suddenly a big issue. It is immediately his largest vulnerability, even after the extraordinary ability of Trump to stand up and put his fist in the air and say, “fight, fight, fight” after an assassination attempt, a huge thing, but suddenly yet another piece of unprecedented history in the US.

Ian, Biden is not selfless. He shouldn’t have run for a second term, and it should have been open primaries
Better late than never.
@@guydreamr there comes a time when late leads to never. sure hope we havent passed it.
Democratic party not being democratic. What a suprise really.
Democrats don’t like democracy. Don’t forget what they did to Bernie. It’s amazing D’s put up with this.
They're going to try to saint him, regardless of anything he may or may not have done in the past. That's just the way it works. Your job as an American is to forget how long they lied to you about his condition and forget almost his entire time in Congress.
I like the fact that Kamala is twenty years younger than Trump.
It looks that this her only qualification.
@@abupinhus She's a prosecutor who knows the law and he's a felon--multiple felon, convicted crimminal, convicted sex abuser, convicted fraud man. She's way better than Trump. Oh and he attacked American democracy, attacked the Capitol--lied and was trying to steal my right to vote
She's still a boomer. 🙂 Even if she gets elected, no person who is not a boomer or older will have been president.
@@abupinhus You wish. Trump has no qualifications, and Vance is even worse.
@@keyisersoze I did not vote for Trump in 2016. But he is the best president from Reagan times, if one judges by accomplishments.
Good, it looks like President Biden will continue the presidential duties, thus freeing VP Harris to get out there and make her case to the nation.
No incumbency benefit though, harder to look presidential when you aren't
@@avinashtyagi2 Oh yeah - Biden wasn't president when he ran tho...
I’m enthusiastic and energised! I hope the party goes BOLD!
Hahaaa do not count on it
My choice would be Pete, bold enough? Young and articulate.
God Bless President Biden. And God Bless our democracy. ❤️🙏🏻
Excellent piece. I like what this host brings to these takes.
Trump talks about loyalty, so consider this: Trump was willing to sacrifice his VP to be hung by his supporters, Biden has stepped down in favor of his VP when his own cognitive decline indicated he might sink to Trump's level.
"Stepped down," don't you mean he was dragged kicking and screaming 😂 😂 😂 #TrumpVance24
@@jonnieinbangkok😂😂 And Jill in a straight jacket!!!
@@jerry9535 She and her cats!
@@jonnieinbangkok yes, but ultimately it was his decision
@@StevenBrener Have they even told him he's not running yet?
President Biden has once again proven to us that he is not just any patriot but that he is a patriot of the highest order and there is lots of time for Harris to helps us move on. I look forward to her introducing her Presidential qualifications. Given the qualifications of the other ticket, that won't be very difficult.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Biden did NOT go willingly
I would agree with you if he hadn't seek for nomination in the first place. Now, it's obvious he was pressured and he and Jill couldn't resist the pressure. It is not an altruistic gesture.
A major corner has been turned. Strap in, folks.
Thanks Biden for your decision for the unity of the country and democracy!
I agree!!! Good day for American democracy and the whole free world
Agree...a cackling Black childless catwoman guarantees Trump in a landslide!
Yes, having somebody who's never won a delegate be the nominee is so democratic. Hilarious.
Maybe good news for America but as someone from RoW, let’s leave rest of the free world out of the equation
The election season is so long in the USA for the same reason the Christmas season has become so strung out - for profits. The National Democratic and Republican parties have become massive corporations with high paying jobs. "Qualified candidate" used to mean how well your views align with the party. But now a qualified candidate means someone that can raise obscene amounts of money.

Limits on campaign $$$$!!!
Limits on campaign length!!!
Time for Trump to drop out and bring the country together.
The presidency is his get out of jail free card
it doesnt work like that. lessons will be learned the hard way - Trump wins, tips democracy over the edge and the world looks back and goes.. 'how the fuck did we let that happen'???
The bus goes here and the bus goes there because that's what buses do.
- Kamala Harris.
@AbaddonianG Who doesn't love a yellow school bus?
Biden's selflessness is just another stark reminder of the myriad pathologies afflicting the GOP presidential nominee. Trump's fitness for high office needs to be brought to the fore in this campaign.
he was forced to resign
Trump is too old.
Yes he definitely looked that way last after being shot in the face 😅😅😅😅
Pathetic Dem
Camp David (founded 1953) is named after a man who is younger than both Trump and Biden. Just let that sink in for a minute
He is a felon
Biden and Trump were the two most disliked candidates imaginable. Harris will obviously not win any Trump voters but if she can keep her base inline and get them out to vote, she just needs to be boring, moderate and 'not that bad' to get that small group of true independents. Can she pull it off?
Polling says no, Dems are all losing to Trump
I doubt that will work, unless the Democrats can fortify the election. Harris was unpopular on her policies before she dropped out and became the DEI choice. The Republicans are fired up about their Peronist candidate. The Democrats are divided and dispirited. If they pull off the election counting, can they pull off the resulting civil unrest? OTOH, the Democrats have a decent track record in political violence, where as the Republicans have been mostly talk.
@@DJC-it2sw Biden wasn’t disliked, especially by Democrats. He was just considered too old and cognitively frail for a second term.
Excellent points, and this is what Dem candidate Marianne Williamson has been advocating since more than a year: open the debates, allow Kamala (or whomever) to showcase their political savvy-muscle against other candidates and demonstrate the tenets that make for a Democratic election process (rather than an "anointing" on the part of the president).
People forget kamela was getting less than 5per cent of votes when she was running .
Because she was competing with other Democrats who were not all that different (and you can only vote for one). Now she's running against Trump who is her polar opposite! Not to mention that even a bag of potatoes running against Trump would be guaranteed to get 40% minimum.
Way to go Joe! You're a PATRIOT that put the country ahead of themselves!
Mr. Bremmer
I want you as the next National Security advisor.
Sincerely yours
Biden had to do this, Nancy was about to drop the hammer. Trust me Nancy doesn't mess around and he knew the gig was up.
"Drop the hammer" is a bad metaphor given the vicious attack on her husband.
Correct Pelosi, Schumer and Obama had given him counsel to 'reconsider ' ...notice how the amount of Democratic leaders increased by the day coming out against him. Eventually the Delegates would have dumped him.
She had no power to force him, he let go because he probably felt he would be alone in this and knew it would just wreck his legacy.
Well.. he did step down after she made her statement so.. 🤷
@@avinashtyagi2 If it was Biden's choice he would have stepped down a year ago, or after the debate...or after funding started dropping off...but he didn't. A day before yesterday, Biden said to Pelosi he was winning in the polls, and she demanded Biden get his campaign manager on the phone and show her the numbers. And Biden, the president did exactly what Pelosi said because she as former speaker commands tremendous power over the democratic party, president and all.
Make no mistake, Biden was forced out by party leadership. It's a nice story, Biden did it for the country. He literally tried everything he could to stay in until people like Pelosi said, "Sorry, the game is up, we can't drag this out any longer. You are out."
Stepping down was the act of a genuine statesman.
Prosecutor versus RAPIST and felon
We need an open convention to show she deserves the nomination
Ian, thanks for the Roman analogies, Trump = Nero; Biden = Cincinnatus. Selfish vs. Selflessness; the majority of Americans value the latter.
“No one had the ability to force him” - I disagree, they cut off the donor money and there were discussions of getting him out with the 25th amendment. He had no choice. No selflessness in Biden.
Trumps largest vulnerability is not his age, it’s his personality
And his crimes, and his misogyny, and his bigotry....
Glad we had a primary. A month ago the Party told us he was running circles around them. How long did the media and those around him know? He needs to resign and let the coronation start early.
Cincinnatus? Come on! If Cincinnatus had a temper tantrum.
This will strengthen the democratic party because Kamara is much younger than Trumo and women are angry about the abortion issue, independent voters now have a choice.
I'm particularly impressed by your argument in that you can't even spell her name correctly!
they just know they dont like "trumo"@richdobbs6595
Some say it's an easy win but she's gotta work at it and be a bit aggressively.
Trump suddenly looks like the old dinosaur he actually is.
Well, who is too old to be President now ?
Not to mention too incoherent.
Age was just a proxy for senility. The MSM had people believing Biden was spry when he was suffering from dementia. What will they lie to you about next?
Trump will dispatch with Kamala despite the age difference.
As usual, Ian, great comments
I always enjoy listening to you, Ian. But there is more desperation than objectivity in your analysis. Peter Zeihan is also anti Trump, but he manages to hide his bias much better when sharing his analyses.
A race that she can show that she can win. Bravo Bremmer, well said.
I have not seen excitement for Harris. With that crazy laugh and her word salad speaking manner who can get excited about that?
Everyone you STILL buys into dems propaganda.
We are all shocked, shocked by this announcement
Nea... a lot of people said he is a dead horse a year ago.
The donors pushed Pelosi and she pushed Biden
When did Trump threaten Pense’s life. I have not heard this before.
It is only the media and the analysts (which inevitable would affect the voters) that stress on the age of the candidate. If anything, the unpopularity of trudeau and macron shows the public favors experience over young age
“No one had the ability to force him” - I disagree, they cut off the donor money and there were discussions of getting him out with the 25th amendment. He had no choice. No selflessness in Biden.
25th would require his cabinet, not happening, and he could continue without donors if he wanted, it would be a sure loss, but he could have done it
Biden was always an ambitious politician willing to pander to get ahead. He's not willing to hold his appointees to account. Supposedly, his strength was in foreign policy, but every one of his actions as commander in chief seem weak. I just don't get this idea that he's any kind of a saint.
So you were in the room when the discussions occurred? WOW, how old were you when you reached the age of all knowing? 😂
Well stated Ian ... 👏👏👏
Nice work pal ... 🫵 ... 👍
Well said. I like how balanced your views are.
After Trump's response to his assassination attempt? It was extraordinary.
5:50, if Harris wins in 2024 she’s eligible to run again in 2028. If the other Dems are saying “Let’s wait until 2028” then they’re conceding that Harris is going to lose.
Agreed. Great comments.
The timing of Joe's announcement could not have been better. Suddenly the assassination attempt is old news. Trump must be freaking out.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if circumstances lead to a Harris v Vance race?
This is very twisted and doesn’t make sense. How withdrawing from a race when you face a landslide defeat selfless ? Was it selfless not allow normal democratic primary ? All these point to Biden ‘s enormous egotism
😂 Ian rolling out the greatest hits of the Imperial City denizens. So predictable. Rest easy Ian, you’re still getting all the good luncheon invites.
So the current senile president isn’t a problem ?
013 “No one thought Biden should stand for reelection.” How presumptuous of you to speak for everyone. I was no Biden fan when he ran in 2020, but when he won the nomination, I adopted the slogan, “Joe Biden. He’s good enough.” Biden far exceeded my expectations. He took office amid chaos and showed an amazing ability to get things done to move our country forward. I supported his run for a 2nd term. Only after watching his post debate interviews did I begin to seriously doubt his ability to win the election. I personally know Biden 2nd term supporters and have seen scores online.
Ian, I like your work. Please think carefully before using words that make you sound arrogant enough to speak for all of us.
All it took was the entire power structure of the party to turn against him. And the threat of the donor class to pull his funding. "good honorable man"
Lied to everyone about his health.
At least he'll be free to smell whoever he wants soon.

Thank you Ian for sharing.
It is a good day for Democracy. I am voting against PROJECT 2025.
His model of the situation is fundamentally wrong in too many ways for this to be a very credible prediction - Biden's primary motivation was not selfless he was being selfish with regard to his reputation and legacy - Newsome and Whitmer just wouldn't even touch this mess even if you asked nicely, and that has nothing to do with name recognition and everything to do with their own political ambitions for the future which aren't served by getting involved here - Kamala is more of a liability than an asset in at least 8 key senate races, and she's not so bad as a person she's very decent but she doesn't have what it takes to really fight her case across 50 states (whatever her case is exactly, and being 'not trump' is a bit worn out now) - Trump on the other hand has the record, and he has vibes at his back especially after that miracle near death experience the man is on fire
Well said...
Like Nixon, Biden might say something like in spirit as he retires:
"You won’t have Biden to kick around anymore, because gentlemen, this is my last press conference,.."
Biden will be in a nursing
home within 6-7 months
I really want to believe that now that the age issue is gone for Democrats, that the obvious mental incpacity of Trump, as well as just how unpopular the ideas behind his campaign actually are, will cause support for him in the "non-cult" part of the electorate to collapse.
It was not really a question about age, but quality of the brain in Biden’s case. Trump’s age should not be the central issue, but his agenda.
And Kamala is still a hopeless candidate, so not much had changed.
She is gonna have to get some attitude to beat trump.
Ask yourself do you think Americans think Trump is too old? Think of some those images from last week, does old come to mind? Stop it!!
Trump would be older than Biden was.
Trump looks and sounds old to me. He may have looked young and vibrant in split screen with Biden but, that is no longer his benchmark.
@@luciusblackwood2640 my point is you’re not going to convince any independent voter that Trump is too old after the images of last week, the problem with Biden was everybody could see how much he aged, it’s not about the age itself Nancy Pelosi still has all her marbles at 84!!
@@cag19549 maybe but perception is everything, at least in this type of contest
@@cag19549 Trump has 1 million weaknesses as a candidate. I don’t think age is going to be the one that gets him!
Well - you’re making it look nicer than it is - Biden was forced to step down ! What’s happening at the Top of that Party is not as romantic as many would like it to be !
Love your reasoned perspective Ian.
Thank you for the update
It is a tough place to be Trump's VP...you never know if he will turn on you.
Of COURSE Trump will eventually turn on Vance. Trump has betrayed everyone who has ever worked with him. Vance would need to be a fool to believe otherwise (but he is ambitious).
From poor foreign policy execution to no experience.
Oh well. Bye Taiwan.
Thanks Bank of America!
Disney, lobbists, donors, media etc. DNC is a crime syndicate.
Being first is more important than being relevant. This is obviously infectuous.
There is still hope for democracy in America and in the world, sealed by this step by Joe Biden. Now we need to unite and stand behind Kamala Harris.
What the US really needs is someone young and new. There is plenty of TALENT within the DMC so let the process allow for the young to be part of the process. If Harris runs then I believe Trump will win. Harris is too connected to the Biden administration and that group have been covering up the real demise of Biden not only for weeks but many months. So there is a trust issue there. SOMEONE YOUNG SOMEONE NEW.
Harris did her job by supporting Biden. The Biden administration also did there's by supporting him. It was always up to Biden on whether he would step aside. To his credit and for the good of the country, he has. Harris is the most experienced and qualified to run because she has served as both a senator and VP. It also doesn't hurt that she's a woman of color and an age that's not too young or too old. I do agree that she needs to earn the nomination. Harris has expressed her willingness to do exactly that in he coming weeks and at the convention.
Want to win the elections guaranteed? Whitmer / Newsom. Those two governors have shown *leadership* . Thank you, looking forward to your video tomorrow to kick off my week.
Anyone on the left who now praises Caesar after knifing him in the back isn’t worthy of my watching another word from them.
Buh-bye, Ian.
You might say Biden could not be forced to give up but I dont agree as once the leading Democratic party leaders and the financial backers are telling you its time to go -you really have no choice if you are still capable of thinking straight.
.All presidents worry about their place in history and Biden will be able to salvage something of his legacy by standing down now although it is far too late .But he will be blamed if Trump wins.
Mr Bremmer can't catch a break
Ian and other Democrats are excited about the anointing of a candidate who was unable to even make it to Iowa in the 2020 Democratic primary. Talk about high risk decisions
Talk about stupid!!
Exactly. An inconvenient truth.
FJB says only 'God could convince him to quit" has quit 😂
If we are stuck with Kringy Kamala, I hope she at least picks Pete for vp. He is much more articulate and likeable.
Buttigieg is the future that I can vote for!!!
Well that’s one way to look at it. Not sure whether it’s naivety or blinkers given your support. Don’t get me wrong I totally respect your right to see things how you do. But to think Joe was not
pressured out of running and to think he did it for the country really is naive or
blind. I just hope whoever leads your country does so with strength & some
semblance of respect.
Trump is really old
The news must have gotten Ian out of bed. He’s in his PJs!
Make longer videos. Why not? 15 minutes + 💪🏼 💪🏼

it's best that the Democratic party goes center left. Remember, approx. 50% of country has other priorities. To ignore those is divisive. In a democracy no has their cake and eats it too. Too be a party of inclusion, all views must be considered whether or not implemented fully or in part.
