As misstruth said he will tell you a story about what happened in the village and explains how everyone there died. It is a bit messed up what the people in the village did for the sake of a "better" life.

I found this shortcut by accident and went straight to the boss fight, did I miss anything important when I did or was it all just clues that would later be explained?

It was a detailed story about what happened in the village. Using sheep instead of people. This part is actually where the story picks up and begins to hook you. Prior to this, it's confusing and honestly dull.
Anyways, you missed a really good story bit. I actually sat and watched the entire thing.

This was the moment I realized the game has consequential dialogue. I was spamming (attack him) fully expecting the game to force me to go through the story. I was pleasantly surprised :)

Yeah, this was me. I wasn't having any of that. I see a funny psycho, I want to fight a funny psycho. In most games I like getting the lore, but in this one I'm just the magical fighting crackhead.
when i did the quest i was thinking that there was no way it would let me do that until i got to the 2nd time and realized this could be really funny
Fun fact: I had never been given the choice to fight him. I either didn't have a choice or I just didn't notice it.
I went with this option first, ready to fight him despite how my level was. Didnt expected him to be 2 levels below me at the time. Beat him with no hits taken. Forget about finding clues in a village, i went to fight him instead. 😂

I chose not to attack him and was presented with an illustrated story about a shepard, sheep and a black lamb representative of what happened in the village which was cool but was still forced to fight him at the end
