One of my biggest annoyances about some gringos coming to Brazil is that they think that speaking SPANISH is going to get them through or they think they can get by in other parts of Brazil without language ability. Another one that was already touched on is dudes thinking that brasileiras are gonna fawn over you just because you're American. That may have been true at one point but it's not true now!

    • @SwedishGringo
      @SwedishGringo  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

I feel you my friend! But at the same time I can’t really blame tourists for trying to communicate best they can: if you know Spanish it’s natural trying to make make yourself heard that way. Many of the Argentinian and Colombian tourists in Brazil do pretty well just speaking their local tongue ☀️

I'm sure it must be annoying people speaking Spanish...But honestly it's a habit, and we also know many Brazilians understand Spanish. Learning some Portuguese is a great idea of course, but if someone's in the country for a short time, they won't be able to learn a lot of the language

As a Brazilian I back this video 1000%
I’ve had many experiences with Gringos in the USA thinking that I was easy just because I’m friendly, our culture is a culture of lots of hugs and kisses (we’re very affectionate people) and in that is seen as being easy I guess!? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ also, Brazilians love to kiss/make out but that does not mean it’s going anywhere, it’s more than likely it wont.. great video gringo!

Sorry if you’ve been treated that way but if I’m to be honest from my experience with Brazilians kissing and making out normally does mean it’s going somewhere 😂 in fact the criticism I’ve had is that I’m ‘too slow’ 😂 just my experience though! Sorry if you’ve felt stereotyped though it’s never okay to be made to feel that way

    1) Brazilians are warm, affectionate, tactile people (for the most part). Male 'gringos' can sometimes misconstrue this when they're interacting with a Brazilian female. She's not 'coming on' to you, she's just being nice.
    2) Brazilians love their language (Portuguese) and they really appreciate it when 'gringos' make a sincere effort (don't have to be fluent) to speak it. To get the basics down I would recommend 'Portuguese in 60 Minutes' by Berlitz. This covers 250 of some of the most common words that you'll need (e.g. how to count to 100 etc.). It' seems to be more geared to Portuguese from Portugal, but it helped me. Also, I would recommend purchasing the CD as it comes with a booklet that contains all of the words broken down by chapter. I listened to the CD over and over before I went to Brazil. I also brought the booklet with me when I first went to Brazil and I would take it with me everywhere I went. I would read the booklet when I was taking public transport, having a coffee etc.
    3) Brazilians love their culture and they can get annoyed when a 'gringo' makes cultural 'faux pas' like thinking that people in Brazil speak Spanish etc. Two books (light reads) that I would recommend someone to read before going to Brazil are as follows: 1) 'The Brazilians' by Joseph Page - this was written in 1986 but it's still relevant today IMO. 2) 'Brazil Culture Smart' by Sandra Blanco.
    4) Brazil is a serious country on the world stage e.g. Sao Paulo is the business / financial hub of South America. Some Brazilians have the perception that all 'gringos' see Brazil as just some kind of 'party' location like Ibiza or Cancun. This is why learning as much as you can about Brazil and its language / culture will help.

      1) affectionate, people who touch others like that are super creepy. These people have a problem
      2) they love their language too much. They are just too polite to tell you "well i don't want to talk with you anymore because you don't speak Portuguese enough fluently" and the booklet is not enough for conversations
      3) They love their culture too much , they're demanding. And never confound Spanish with Portuguese
      4) mainly at São Paulo and Brasília, but Brazil is still mostly "fun" everywhere or almost

Brazilians love gringos as long as you're not a weirdo. Treat everyone with respect, be yourself and learn some Portuguese to sound cute! But the problem is some people have a stereotypical way of thinking about people. I've even encountered Brazilians who have a stereotypical way of thinking about me initially, but my love and knowledge for Brazil cancels out that stereotype eventually. Also I'm a friendly and loyal person so always be yourself and the truth will always reveal itself....

I think what some men tend to misconstrue about Brazilian women when it comes to dating is yes they can be direct if they’re interested in you but that doesn’t mean that they are ‘easy’. Standards are still very high when it comes to attraction they’re just more direct about it!

I think maybe this is pretty important viewing for tourists who want to come to Brazil, in particular guys. This should serve as a reminder that Brazil is a big country with a rich history, numerous cultures and cannot be stereotyped. Most Brazilians I've come to know or have met are hard working, educated people who have ambitions, agency, they really cherish family and friends, and they have self respect (of course there will always be widely varying circumstances for people). All of this stuff should be obvious but maybe some ignorant people forget about these things.
Interestingly self respect is something we have lost a lot of in the West. And when you travel to a country like Brazil for a little while and you think about It, you can see a difference.
I think Brazil is a great country to travel to. There are lots of things to do and see there. And culturally, wow it really is very deep. Brazilian people are really cool. They are often quite warm and relaxed and yes they are good at partying, or at least being social. This is because being social is a big part of life there I think, similar to other South American or Latin cultures.
But in saying that, as the girls in the video would like to point out, you should always be respectful to the people of the country you are visiting and also the local customs. So don't forget this if you want to join in the party. Never assume things about anybody or how they think. It's very true what they say. Don't ever think you are better than them. You are not. BTW there certainly are some cultural aspects that Brazil does better than the West.
Whilst it's not uncommon to feel the warm nature of Brazilians in my experience interacting with them, don't expect be treated as a special person just because you are a gringo. They don't owe you this and it's not what you're going to get. Travelling there is no different to anywhere else at the end of the day. You are a guest. To experience the warmth and hospitality of Brazilians can be great but again it's not owed.

These criticisms are understandable, don’t be condescending to the people in the country you’re visiting, I’ve noticed while I was in Brazil that the women are very down to earth and easy to communicate with which shouldn’t be confused as them wanting to immediately have sex… Almost every local i had conversation with was friendly from the start, I spent a lot of time in the country side and spend a few days in SP and Rio, the country is just a friendly and welcoming place. My fiancé is Brazilian and it was a great experience meeting her family and friends, I can’t wait to go back… oh yeah and the churrasco is the best food in the world.

I am leaving for Sao Paulo on 3/4/24 be there for two weeks I'm interested in meeting just regular people, I always respect the locals the best I can and never take for granted anyone, I like to be chill and watch others and knows what is good way, I never make the assumption in other countries. It better to be warm friendly and polite to everyone no matter who they are, than to insist and bully or disrespect others. I've been working on a few language skills for Brazil, just the basics so the local there may know at least I'm putting in some efforts for their country. I feel this is a way for me to get a warmer welcome to some Brazilians. I looking forward to the foods there and the museums maybe some local customs and the people of course. The bars and nightclubs are not really my thing, I avoid trouble areas and keep my street smarts when I go anywhere (especially in America as it can be dangerous here too.)
I'm looking forward to my trip, hope I have a good time.

When she talks about gringos showing emotions too fast, she’s referring specific about romantic feelings. In other countries, people go out and engage in relationships too fast. Well, at least, to us Brazilians, it’s too fast. We normally go out with somebody for a couple of months before engaging in a relationship. So, as she said, after one kiss, “gringos” already fall in love, which is culturally strange to us.
Now, about being cold, she’s referring to emotions shown in greetings and small social interactions. Ex: Here in Brazil, it’s normal to say “good morning/afternoon” when you cross ways with strangers on the sidewalk, which might not be normal in other countries.

gringo is a very wide concept. It depends on where they are from. people from well developed countries tend to see us as inferior somehow, but in the end is a metter of education. We are all suposed to treat people the right way, doesn't metter where they are from. In Fortaleza you can see people treating their own even worse than gringos do... so is a metter of education. But you are right when you say we are a proud people!

It’s not an easy question to answer: Brazilians are a multi-layered people and rather not talk about uncomfortable things. As I said this one needed some convincing. I’d be surprised if these opinions don’t exist in Rio as well
