One piece of advice I learned from an artist called Irv Rudley, is to fill in the background, clothes and hair of the portrait before you even touch the face. If you have no colours and values around the face, then it'll make it much more difficult to get the values correctly laid down on the face.
@@halochaloo Yeah that’s true, I just feel like a lot of beginner artists unintentionally make the process of portrait painting/sketching a lot more difficult for themselves by starting on the face. Also I loved the end result! Hopefull I'll be inspired to pick up my pencils again soon because it's been a while 😅
Hey, firstly wanted to say thank you for tagging me and sharing your creation with the series. Absolutely great work, I watched your recent video regarding Black characters and actually never realised I Don't do too many myself, though, I do many Blue and green aliens haha. So it's nice to see a different take on the series. I would say, the title is like suuuuuuper the same as mine which is a little misleading for my own series I started a few years back, I was actually a little triggered (in the latest episode) before I saw this episode of yours crediting me. Just a food for thought, identical titles can clash series and without appropriate credit can detract from source/inspiration works. That said I just wanted to reach, very lovely to find another artist from I believe a London background too. Hey, maybe one day we could actually Crossover in an Episode!
Hey Anthony, that's completely fair enough. I have changed the titles up now and I'll tag you in every video in the series so people know where the inspiration originally came from. Yesss I'll be so down for a crossover, that would be fab🥰
@@TemiDansoArt aw that's so kind of you!! I really didn't want to appear douchebaggy, it's more just a "future" type thing, it's always good to separate yourself even with the same idea. Really appreciate that you did this though!! So kind. If you have Instagram feel free to throw me a message and we will work something out. 😇
Love this interaction. With so much "drama" that can happen in the community, it shouldn't be so refreshing to see artists supporting artists but it is. Thank you both.
Dude! You just drew Kendra, the vampire slayer! I’m quite face blind, but that over the shoulder attitude and pout is all her, you got her hairstyle too, even though the out fit doesn’t add up.
What? There is a name for not being able to visualize? I always thought it’s because I’m not a “real” artist (and I am 51!) I can visualize home decor and all but never my drawing or painting. Also, I am SO THANKFUL you stress the “ugly stage,” you are AMAZING!🥰😊
Nope, already saw a bunch of vids by artists that can't visualise at all, either. And it's not only in the ac4ual artist "job range", I also met fellow architects both while studying and now on a regular job that can't really visualise what they're supposed to plan and design - so you're definitely not alone in that 😘
I honestly feel that practise and studying the face (or whatever you want to drawl will definitely help with this. People put so much pressure on themselves but no one is born with the skills, we needa practise and study! 😌🤍
Seeing this video I just KNEW I can learn so much from watching this, I’ve never subscribed to a channel faster, I don’t even follow art channels normally cause they just don’t help me, and the way you talk about it, girl you’re awesome, love this
It wasn't until I saw this video in my recommended feed that I realized TH-cam never recommends Black visual artists to me. If I don't regularly make the effort to find non-white creators on the platform, it's almost like TH-cam thinks I'm not interested. I'm glad you popped up for me!
I don't often see darker complexions colored in like this. It was fascinating and I'm very impressed at your talent! :) Absolutely beautiful, love love love it! Never would have thought to use pencil over the marker, I have to try this. You rock!
I'm so glad I found your site. Your voice sounds like the morning, the sun rising, birds singing and all the flowers are in full bloom. I think you are so adorable! When it comes to most art I find that there is always an awkward (ugly) stage at some point before completion. I remember my art Instructor drilling this into our head, but I was too young to appreciate exactly what she was explaining. Of course yrs later while spring cleaning I had to go through all of my unfinished art because I couldn't get passed the ugly stage. I had given up painting altogether and after 40 yrs and a pandemic I started painting again. I just finished 2 paintings for my son's new apartment. He had more faith in me than I did. My son bought me all the art supplies that one would need to paint a picture. When I started my first picture I could feel the passion ignite and now when I hit the ugly stage of the painting I get excited knowing that I'm almost done. My son's neighbour loved my paintings so much that he has requested for me to paint a picture for his place. I feel light as a feather knowing that I possess the skills to get past that awkward stage of a painting. Also, I am very thankful to you and other professional artists that make these video's. I know I wouldn't have the art skills without all the great artists out there that love to share..
This is my first time watching this channel. I'm a 8th grader trying to draw . I'm good at pencil shading realism but I always wanted to draw with markers .I have always had trouble doing that .When she said she couldn't imagine lighting i was like i am not the only one. I always needed a reference picture. I am so happy to see this video.and i also wanted to thank you for using coloured pencils over makers cause I could have never thought of that.
So beautiful. Great job! As soon as you had her whole face covered, I thought she looked nice; but you kept calling her ugly. I’m glad you didn’t quit bc she just got more and more stunning. Great trick w/the braids too ... and the gold foil.
I am a newcommer to your channel Sarah Renae Clarke recommended me to you because i too have hypoaphantasia. When i was really young ppl told me *use your imagination* and i was like *um .... how ????* and basically it just ran from there. I am now 52 and only just restarting to try colouring and drawing. I have ohuhu and polychromos, learning basically over again and also to try things to cope with the aphantasia. Your work is sooo awesome and inspiring ! I am going to be binge watching your channel :) Thankyou !
The name “Nyima” popped in my head when you asked. Pronounced nye-E-ma, accent on the E. It was just beautiful-sounding in my head, but I did a Google search in case it actually meant something bad, and it is a word! Not bad though. In Tibetan, it means, ‘the sun’, as in one w/the radiance of the sun. Pretty fitting since you kept wondering about the light [and shadow].
That is SOOO amazing, wow I wish one day I could achieve what you’ve achieved! AMAZING! And I know I’m REALLY late but maybe for the name: Daisy, Abie, Roxy or sky. But again THANK you so much for making your videos! You inspire me so much! Thank you GREAT job!

AND i just love her style, i’m a young artist myself, and she inspires me so much.
I don’t see a reason for me not to sub to herrr 💖💞🥺
Sameee
this is so stunning, the gold foil reallt brought something special to the finished piece! well done, amazing artwork!
God bless sis your so talented like even the shading you said was bad was perfect! Really enjoy your art you deserve every good thing! Proud to see another Black female artist!
Hey Temi! A hack for the visualizing face shadws thing, if you wear makeup/have see someone do their makeup, do it like the contouring! I just thought it was a good idea, i personally havent tested it.
This is the first video I've seen of yours and it's honestly so inspiring to hear even professional artists struggling with the process and being honest, will definitely be watching more! Also I loved the end result! Hopefull I'll be inspired to pick up my pencils again soon because it's been a while 😅
she actually looks like a princess or royalty. you did a great job, keep going! :)
this makes me want to start drawing and coloring again! beautiful work!!!!
This is the politest reply section I've seen! 🖤💕💛

I really like how she turned out! Please do more! I will comment again, if I have a name suggestion!

Honestly this whole channel and comment section is so wholesome! Keep up the good work
Seeing this video I just KNEW I can learn so much from watching this, I’ve never subscribed to a channel faster, I don’t even follow art channels normally cause they just don’t help me, and the way you talk about it, girl you’re awesome, love this
As soon as I saw the notification, I CLICKED SO FAST! 😅
Ayeee early gangggg
It wasn't until I saw this video in my recommended feed that I realized TH-cam never recommends Black visual artists to me. If I don't regularly make the effort to find non-white creators on the platform, it's almost like TH-cam thinks I'm not interested. I'm glad you popped up for me!
Okay, if you call this shading bad, I can't imagine what you'd think of my shading 😂😂😂
Amazing! I love the gold in her hair!!! The ugly phase is part of the process. I hate the ugly phase! Beautiful drawing!
I don't often see darker complexions colored in like this. It was fascinating and I'm very impressed at your talent! :) Absolutely beautiful, love love love it! Never would have thought to use pencil over the marker, I have to try this. You rock!
I feel like Janelle would be a fitting name for her! >w
THIS IS JUST PURE TALENT AND CREATIVITY SIS!😍❤️🌸
I name her Raila 😊💜
TELL ME WHY I want to own that brush marker set even though I literally can’t colour🧐😌
Because you’re awesome!
Idk but im the same
This is my first time watching this channel.
Omg this is is my first video I have seen of you, I really love your art style, and it’s great to see more POV TH-camr
i always love your vids because you are so good at art and always so inspirational to me 💕✨
Thanks so much
Whoa this is amazing, the ugly phase had me worried for a sec haha

One day I swear I'll be just as good an artist as that
This is why sometimes, you have to trust the process. I was NOT expecting that to turn out as well as it did, but it looks great!
So beautiful. Great job! As soon as you had her whole face covered, I thought she looked nice; but you kept calling her ugly. I’m glad you didn’t quit bc she just got more and more stunning. Great trick w/the braids too ... and the gold foil.
everyone: her colouring! its so good!
me: her nails. THEY'RE SO PRETTY
As soon as i got this notification٫ i dropped everything to come watch 😂
Ayeee early ganggg
Hiii
Girl what are you talking about? This “ugly phase” is better than what I can do in my internet life of being an artist
I love how vulnerable you are. Me subscribing. I love your humor.
Her: It's still looking hideous.
Me: Can't even color in the lines.
Yes! I just ordered a dragon ball z coloring book and I’m so excited to start coloring it,
Ayee that's funnn
OMG am I the only one who LOVES and it’s OBSESSED with her skin color specially in her hands god I love iiit 🤩🤩🤩❤️❤️
