16:00 ABS= absolute pitch, REL= relative pitch. Which means, if you have C-2 ABS, it will always play a C in octave#2 no matter which note is triggered on the keyboard. Relative means the pitch relative to the note you play on the keyboard. So if you play a middle C with +1 REL, you will hear one semi tone above middle C, which is C-sharp. 22:00 See where it says "length"in the lower right corner of the screen? This seems to be the bar length of the clip on the grid. So, a value of 1 means the clip is one bar long, and you'll only be able to add notes within that one bar. Good for when you want to copy phrases of notes at a time, like a tracker pattern. Perhaps the length number can be changed in order to increase or decrease the length of the clip, rather than "gluing" bits together. Also, the sequencer seems to quantize the notes as you record in real-time, so it would be best to use the metronome while recording to get the notes lined up properly in the bars. Finally, 26:00 LOL!!
Important info which I needed to know! Thank you Shawn! ABS = Absolute pitch! okay yes! that explains why the notes were fixed until I switched it to REL :o) Yes that is the length in the lower right corner, but I wasn't able to change the value from there, I had to do the gluey thing to extend them. I just checked in the manual too and it seems gluing and cutting are the only way to lengthen and shorten with the glue and scissor tools. I'm not sure if you can copy notes, I need to read up on that.
Glad to see the MSSIAH getting some love! I feel like I’m the only person in the world with one. Haven’t done the sid2sid mod yet but I bought the board. I’m using the Elektron Octatrack to control, process and sample it and it’s tons of fun!
The interesting thing about using two SIDs in a C64 for music is you can get an idea of what Commodore 65 games could have sounded like (that had two SIDs and also 320x200 in 256 colours at the time of the Amiga 500 plus development with 32 colours in the same rez). Should easily be able to get two sample channels and 6 hardware channels of waveforms with two SIDs (Hubbard got 2 sample channels out of 1 SID in Mega Apocalypse but that is quite a simple untaxing game graphically).
DCO=Digitally Controlled Oscillator, so its an analog synth but digitally controlled (pitch, amplitide etc.) - the LFO is a low frequency oscillator - its not directly audible and its used to modulate other parameters like filter cutoff or pitch. Also, check out cynthcart for the c64, its a lot of fun, just plug and go - certain keys change the settings - you don't even need a screen to use it!
Great video! As a new c64 owner I was nervous about the power issues. Thanks to you have managed to get in touch with Hans to order one of his c64 savers.
This is awesome. I never loved MSSIAH, but I only ever used the mono synth, which explains why. I'll need to give the sequencer a bash. P.s. your laugh cracks me up.
great demonstration of the MSSIAH sequencer.. the instrument editor is very complex but you can reproduce nearly every famous C64 instrument with it .. I made a Zoids cover for MSSIAH (video on our youtube channel) with all the original instruments used in the track.. to find out the right instrument parameters, I converted the SID file with SID2MIDI wich also produces a tracker style TXT output file where you can see all the instrument parameter change in realtime .. all you need to do is to interpret this values with the MSSIAH wavetable editor .. ah and one more thing.. the memory for song data is very limited ... you have to use more „pseudo“ tracks in your song preventing the C64 running out of memory - have fun !!
Thank you! I do need to get used to how SID works, I might have a go at SID2Midi and see what I can do. Thanks for the tips, more needed from Mssiah and SID composers here :o)
Seriously by 27:12 I had tears streaming down my face lol. I feel your pain - I would have thrown that mssiah cart out of the window by now lol. I was considering getting that cart but I am not sure it would be good for my sanity!
Lmao! I had a hard time editing this video, I kept cracking up into tears at points, freakin by the end I could see stars! If you're going to get this cart, save yourself rage and laughter combined and use a 1351 freakin mouse Lol!! Throw it out of the window :o)) its such a small and light cart, you'd make it vanish lol! After all that, it gave us a good laugh :oD
I probably said something along these lines before, but I do so admire your curiosity to explore, learn new things and stick with it. So envious of that! And somehow you make a topic I have a hard time following, very interesting. :o) 11:22 - Can I please borrow some of that enthusiasm. I really need it for.. Well, most things, these days.. :o) :o) And thank you for 26:31 - I love it! Damn mouse.. ^_^
I'm pretty sure you will be enthusiastic about something that interests you ;o) It's natural as it drives passion. You do have quite a few interests yourself, firstly buying a cassette deck in 2017 would be madness to most people... but we celebrate such madness :oD Hahah my pleasure! And thanks for the kind words! :o)
I guess I made it sound worse than it is. My apologies. I'm not sitting in a corner crying, or anything, hehe.. Actually, last few days I have been brushing up on my soldering skills, with a couple of DIY kits. One of them is mostly tiny surface mount things. Not so easy. :o) But I'm enjoying that, with only a few curse words here and there. Also planning a few hardware videos. A small joystick mod (adding 2nd button function - convenient in some games), and that stereo SID thing. Bought a drilling machine, to make the holes. So.. At least I'm prepping. ^_^
lol you didnt make it sound like that's what you were doing ;o)) my point was that the difference may be that I vocalize it more and you don't. (I guess i should have just said that rather than dancing around the maypole lol) I'm still a little aprehensive about surface mount haha it's commendable that you're trying at least. Nice! I look forward to the upcoming hardware videos, I have a couple of joystick stuff coming up too but on different topics. I'm surprised that they didnt add second button on Amiga joysticks as standard, it's capable of it and some games have the option for it. I need to get a handheld drill also, i'm using a mains powered drill for small projects, it feels a little like using a chainsaw to cut a popsicle stick sometimes lol ;o))
Heh, wow. 220v drilling machine (it's also 220v in UK, yeah?).. No shortage of power, at least!! :o) Lol, I know I didn't make it sound like that, but you made a good point there. ;o) I'm not sure I mentioned it to you anywhere yet, but at times I like to comically exaggerate. In fact, now we're hovering around the subject, I don't remember having cried the last 15-20 years. It's nothing to do with "being a man" (unless it's subconscious), because at times I've felt I could use a good liberating cry. But it wouldn't happen. Waterworks closed. ;o/ Thanks, I think I can safely promise the videos will appear before christmas. Yes, I exaggerated. :o)
230v close enough. lol yes even the lowst setting kinda feels too fast sometimes lol I think i'm starting to get used to your exaggerating, it took long enough lol, it being text only and aroudn 93% of human communication is body language and vocal tone ...it's hard to pick up through text only at times lol We all do need a cry every now and then, it's only healthy, though as long as you're feeling okay about it, that's the main thing. I don't cry as often as I used to I keep having it in my mind that christmas is way off, but it's a bit unsettling, it's kinda just around the corner lol, the year zapped by quick! Sorry I just diluted your intentional exaggeration ;o)))
I'm wondering if other mouse configurations might work better. This is of course assuming that the surface you're using it on is well suited as I've run into such issues myself.
Where did you get the computer saver, can't seem to find anyone on ebay or a webshop selling it. I've got a C64C and a C64G I'm too afraid to use in case I fry one of them. Excellent video btw :-)
Hola! I´m really having fun watching your videos, thank you! QUESTION: I´m just about to purchase a MSSIAH cartridge. Do you know if I can sequence it from another computer in polyphonic or multi timbral mode, running Live, etc.? With the MSSIAH in sequencer mode, can I create instruments on the c64, save them to sd card, and then just send midi notes to all 3 (or 6 with dual SID) channels simultaneously and use the c64 as a regular multitimbral synth? Gracias.. Cheers!
Hola! Thanks for the kind words. I havent tried sequencing it from another computer running 'Live' i've not used Ableton before as i'm mainly a tracker person more than sequencing. You can create instruments and save them though as far as I can see. But I'm still yet to explore Mssiah a bit more and familiarize myself with it and sequencers. :o)
Hey! I´ve contacted customer support, and Robin has kindly answered the question. I´m pasting it just in case somebody needs to know. Hope it helps.. Cheers! "Yes, you can switch the MSSIAH Sequencer into full MIDI mode, i.e., a multitimbral synthesizer accepting MIDI notes on all channels. SID #1 can be used for polyphonic playing with three notes or even six notes with two SIDs present. Using both SIDs, you can also play multitimbral on three monophonic channels with SID #1 at the same time playing SID #2 polyphonically. MSSIAH accepts MIDI velocity, program change, control change and pitch bend messages. Note that Sequencer in full MIDI mode uses all CPU power thus blanks the screen. "
MsMadLemon yep, it's kind of a clipped sine. Afaik there were some hardware limitations in the chip that made it impossible or very hard for it to generate true sines. Well, either that, or it was easier to just go with something that resembled a sine, and apply a LP filter :) But great video, and I'm looking forward to more SID adventures. Once you master it, it's a very powerful chip :) You can check some of my SID tunes on my channel, if you like.
Thanks again for all the wonderful videos, MSMadLemon. For those who are not into opening up their C64's for the SID2SID mod you can still get stereo SIDs. MSSIAH and CynthCART 64 V2 both work with the SID CART II cartridge via port a expander. If you have a SID nano it is best to get the non-case version of SID CART II as most SID nanos are too tall for the cart version. SwinSID Ultimate may fit though but don;t have one yet to try. Sharewareplus in UK may still have the SID CART II (vimeo.com/106649971) and/or board. It is clone of the old www.mycommodore64.com/2011/09/27/commodore-sid-symphony-ii/
If you're more into tracker-like software, you might want to try out SIDWizard for the C64. You can get it from here: csdb.dk/release/?id=131846 As always, a great video, keep up the good work :)
Thanks! I actually have SIDWizard, I opened it got scared and closed it again lol! I didnt know where to begin, but I think after tinkering with Mssiah, I feel I have a rough idea now what to do. Thanks for the recommendation and kind words! :o)
You're welcome :) You could also try out Goattrack 2.73 for the PC. It can create tunes in stereo-mode which you can export as SID or PRG files. I haven't worked with it very much, but it comes with built-in help to make things easier.
the mouse works perfectly on this pad with other systems, Amiga, laptop etc, I tried another surface too, the same thing. I will try another mouse next time.
I've been trying to get one :o) .. This Tom+ adapter and mouse has been borrowed from my Amiga :o)) .. the other option would have been joystick *cries* it was painful! lol

And thank you! :o)
I have just refurbished a C64C, do I need to be worried about the power supply? Love your channel btw!!!
I finally set up my MSSIAH. This answers a lot of little questions that pop up, thanks!
You're wonderful! This was just what I needed to round of this Sunday :-)
Thanks for this video. I’m finally getting around to using Mssiah, and there aren’t many tutorials around.
This is awesome. I never loved MSSIAH, but I only ever used the mono synth, which explains why. I'll need to give the sequencer a bash. P.s. your laugh cracks me up.
Fun start of the video :) Cool stuff, I was wondering a bit about this cart.
Nice video.
I used to use Ubik's Music on the C64 to do SID tunes back in the 80s,before moving on to the AMIGA and it's trackers.
I just stumbled on this video after watching a C64 demo (Insomnia by 64ever, incidentally). You're awesome!
Thank you!

Such a random channel. Amazing!
I'm beginning to wonder what's in your teacup!!!! LOL You silly...
Lol!! :oD
im thinking mushrooms o_0
This program looks incredibly powerful for composing C64 music, relatively speaking when compared to other music programs there have been.
Fantastic (as always)! You had me laughing my a#! off at points towards the end there. Stupid 1 pixel button =D
"Where is it? Where did it go?" - LMAO And again at 26:36 - you nearly killed me with laugher.

Charming presentation

And thanks! :o)
Thank you for the mention :)
My pleasure! :o)
Hey, nice video :) You're laughing all the time lol
BTW I just got a SD2IEC for my C64 now as well, its so convenient :)
lol thanks :o)
I'm glad you're enjoying your SD2IEC! they are very convenient indeed :o)

Does anyone know what the keys commands are for the messiah.
what was that adorable little c64 style flash drive?!!
sd2iec the future is 8 bit sells them.
Can you actually use the MSSIAH cartridge with your C64 keyboard only as well (so if you don't have a MIDI keyboard)?
I didnt think to try this, I assume you can but i'll try it when i next connect and will confirm.
You can.
Hi Amimaster, you can. Once we got drunk at my friend's place and spent most of the evening exploring MSSIAH using the C64 keyboard.
Actually, the waveforms are sawtooth, triangle, square and noise. There's no sine :)
strange how it looks so much like a sine wave icon lol :o)

And sure I will do.
Nossa os seus vídeos são sempre demais e me agradam e muito, eu gosto de mais do seu estilo.
IM loving C64 stuff. Sigh, I miss my C64. :(
Thanks! I seem to be having a C64 season and enjoying it very much! :o)

the mouse works perfectly on this pad with other systems, Amiga, laptop etc, I tried another surface too, the same thing. I will try another mouse next time.
Try a real 1351, this works perfect ;-)
I've been trying to get one :o) .. This Tom+ adapter and mouse has been borrowed from my Amiga :o)) .. the other option would have been joystick *cries* it was painful! lol
Perhaps one with adjustable resolution?
Enjoyed. Thanks.
