    The noise coming from the capstan when it's stopped could be due to the degradation of the SMD electrolytic capacitors on the capstan's circuit board. All the SMD electrolytics in these machines tend to fail, but luckily, SONY only used them in the fluorescent display and on the circuit board under the capstan. I’m sure you already knew this, but just in case...

    I thought I'd seen all your past Betacam vids, this one went under the radar! The 5-pin ribbon cables in the PVW and UVW carriages are notorious for failing. They carry the tape in and tape size sensor signals. The UVW carriage looks just like a PVW carriage but without the drop-down mirror & LED bar (for viewing tape hub rotation from the front). The reel motor ribbon cables also fail. The service menu allows you to individually test every motor, sensor and solenoid - one of the things that make these and PVW's so great for fault diagnosis and servicing. I did the (multi-day) Sony training courses on both PVW and UVW machines, good days! Ha-ha don't think I've tried putting a Betamax tape into my PVW-2800P. They do support oxide Betacam for playback though. Good video!

    Thanks for showing this UVW machine. Brings back lot of memories. I've had worked on most of the Betacam series machines from, including this one UVW-1200P and higher up, BVW-60, 65, 70, 75 then when digital came in, on to DVW Digital Betacam machines. The BVW-65 (Player) and BVW-75 (Recorder) machines had the Dynamic Tracking (DT) video heads, which besides auto tracking during normal play, it also allowed for slow-mo and hi-mo speeds up to certain multiples of normal play speed. You are right, the design and build quality of Sony machines were very good, easy to work on. I've changed head drums on these machines many times and drum eccentricity alignment and associated electronic alignments were fairly easy to do if you were trained and had built up some experience doing this sort of things. I had some of these same problems that you tend to get with these machines, with loading system/carriage and threading, etc. I do remember having to lubricate reel size motor/gears on some of the machines as I experienced similar problems, except the machines I dealt with always showed error messages when the reels wouldn't move for smaller or larger tapes but my experiences were mostly on BVW machines. Maybe UVW machines logic programming were somehow different for some errors and functions where some messaging were left out by design or just overlooked. Cheers.

    Hi! I have an UVW 1800.. I bought a Convergence AFM216 Audio Enhancer which came with 2 connected cards and a few loose cables which i suppose they were connected to another card, but they were cutted from it. Sorry, for bothering you, but I need to know how to connect those loose cables, do you know how to do it? do you have a manual or schematics for it? a picture of the connections? whatever.. please if you could give me any idea on how to solve this problem i'd apreciate it so much. The idea is that I can record what is happening on my computer monitor screen. I know I need a video signal generator, but I also need to provide a video signal from the video card preferably through a component type output. The question is, do I need to convert the signal or can I provide a pure analog signal through the VGA output? I think this is a good idea for the next episode of the channel :)

    HI. Please could you help me? I have a sony betacam sp uvw . The tapes I record with it seem to read fine by it But when they are read by other betacam machines they give a disturbance as if the tracking alignment failed. (White lines below) Thanks in advance

      It may have a tape path alignment fault. It's fairly unusual in these machines unless someone has been fiddling. Re-alignment is a fairly skilled task, requiring at least an oscilloscope and service manuals, and ideally some real alignment tapes (very hard to source). It could be a non-trivial repair.

    Colin, why are the UVW and PVW series of Betacam SP video cassette recorders and players only have linear audio, and not both that and AFM audio (unlike the BVW series of Sony Betacam SP recorders, the Digital Betacam DVW series, the Betacam SX DNW series, the HDCAM HDW series, MPEG IMX MDW series and HDCAM SR SRW series VTRs, which do have both)?

    We have UVW-1800P that occasionally does this loading weirdness. It was 'brand new in box' and we acquired it as basically a virgin machine with only a few hours operated - it came from an advertising exec who had it 'at home' for viewing tapes but had never bothered to use it and was clearing out his loft.
    Eventually it'll load a small tape and behave flawlessly for weeks, then it'll start this nonsense again. After about 20 failed loads it eventually rights itself and behaves for a few weeks again?

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A nice find with such low hours. I'm not sure I can really fault find it from a distance. The service manuals are available on-line. Maybe start by blowing out any dust on both sides of the deck with air cans.

    Thanks for this. My UVW-1800 does NOT reject an oxide tape upon insertion, and now I have such a tape currently stuck in my machine. I was never 100% clear as to whether this model could play such tapes. I guess not.

    Really enjoyed the video. Capstan motor noise - just a thought but DC motors like that have a field coil and an armature coil if not using permanent magnets. Most designs have the field coil permanently energised and with age the windings loosen and can hum. If the armature bearings are also aged I believe the whole motor can quietly vibrate. Putting your finger on the shaft is probably just stopping that and stopping the noise. Does that sound possible in this case? I think that's what it is.

    Smashing video, thank you :-D
    That reel position problem sounds really odd as i would have expected the mechacon to monitor the reel position and kick up a code if the reels didn't hit there endstops every time.
    Does it use the rise in current from the wormdrive motor to know when the endstops have been reached?
    Perhaps the worm drive motor needs a clean and bearing lube, maybe :-).
    I love the way it's so careful with wrapping and unwrapping the tape, never any damage to the tape :-D.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well that's what confused me, and the reason that at first I thought it was a tape size sensor issue. According to the service manual of the UVW1800P, there is a PCB marked PTC-66, reel position sensor. So that implies that it should know where the reels are, and so it should have issued some sort of error message. But it didn't. I've done a lot of testing off-screen and the machine really is working reliably now.

      @@zx8401ztv I'm reasonably confident in it. Fortunately BetacamSP players are not rare, the format was a huge success. • @themaritimegirl
    @themaritimegirl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm surprised that it refuses to play oxide tapes. Doesn't the original Betacam format use oxide tapes, and aren't Betacam SP VCRs supposed to be able to play Betacam recordings?

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some BetacamSP machines do play oxide tapes, I covered a BVW-22P office player in another video, which does. But the UVW1200/1400/1600/1800 machines don't support oxide playback and will just spit the tape out.

    In my opinion Betacam tapes of any type should be captured using a player with SDI output, ADC inside a pro deck is better than any capture card made nowadays. But I don’t have your experience to confirm it,

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually I do have a bit of experience to the contrary. I have found that very grainy, noisy BetacamSP tapes look better when played on a UVW series machine than they do on a Sony J3 SDI deck. But I do take your point that not all capture devices are great.
