The BBFC did cut a lot of “fish cruelty” from a movie called The Isle. Shark cruelty was cut back in the day from Mondo Cane. Total Recall was heavily cut for an R-rating, including the escalator scene and Ironside’s death, but the cut footage has never resurfaced.
The U.K. versions have always been the same as the cut R-rated release. Even new editions are still based on the version originally released in the States. If Benny’s death is a head and shoulder shot rather than a wider shot with the drill and blood spray clearly visible, it’s cut. It’s a shame though, it would be awesome too see it restored to its full glory like Robocop.
My mom took me to see this on my 12th birthday. I had a sunburn so bad I had blisters all over my shoulders and face. I loved the film, despite being in agony, and uncomfortable from seeing a three-breasted woman with my mom right next to me. 😅😅
Fish are protected in the US under American Humane’s Guidelines for the Safe Use of Animals in Filmed Media Section 8-26.1. I can't remember what film it was but several years ago there was an incident where there was a large aquarium on set and they cut the power off over a weekend and the oxygen pumps quit running, killing all the fish. The film was not allowed to include the "No animals were harmed..." statement.
“I’m sure she hated every minute of it” is the funniest line in the movie. It’s the guy’s face as he says it
