  • Tune in to hear Thomas P. Gross, M.D. discuss the differences between a Hip Resurfacing procedure and a Total Hip Replacement. Dr. Gross practices at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery in Columbia, South Carolina and is one of the first surgeons in the US to begin metal-on-metal hip resurfacing, completing over 6500 cases since 1999.

      I’m also from Lancaster… I made the trip to see Dr. Gross, as have 4 friends… he’s worth the trip. I guarantee you’ve never had customer /service support like you will get from his office. He has an amazing team.

    I had both my hips resurfaced (3 mos apart) in 2008, quite a new procedure at the time (I was 59) and I still can't understand why everyone I still hear about (people I know) have replacement!

    Resurfacing is amazing! I had such almost 3.5 years' ago. Carried out by Prof D Meek, Glasgow. At 66 years I continue to run up to 60 miles per week and also race at 10K distance!

    thankyou for the video, that was very informative. I am a 43yo male who is into judo and brazilian jiu jitsu. I'm booked in for a hip resurfacing next month due to fairly advanced hip arthritis. I chose the procedure exactly because I'm hoping it will allow me to return to my sports once i'm recovered.

    The videos on hip replacement indicate that the high-density cross-linked polyethylene acetabular cup liner with a ceramic ball moving within it wears very little compared to older procedures using metal-to-metal contact. This video says there will be metal-to-metal wear with hip resurfacing implants. Other videos mention that very old procedures used metal-to-metal movement and caused severe complications, namely metallosis.

    Thank you for your video. I had my hip resurfaced in Norway in 2009, 14 years ago. I had to withstand cosmic pains until then. I consciously choose BHR over the Total Replacement, because its costruction is more natural, stable and bone saving. I have almost normal range of motion. But they have stoped to operate BHR about 12 years ago. They say, the main reason is the metal ions produced by friction of metal to metal prostetic. They are afraid of causing canser... I am afraid it will not come back...

      So nobody is currently offering resurfacing in here in Norway?

    • @TrueZgrzyt

    Thank you for all this information. I have stage 4 arthritis in my left hip and have been investigating having work done on my hip. I am a very active 63 year old male who wants to do my regular activities without restrictions. Is there a way to learn about your surgery methods? Do you incorporate robotics in any way for measurement purposes? Thank you again for any information you can share or directing me to a website for more detailed information. Also since you are not in my area of the country is this an outpatient procedure or would I need to stay in the Columbia area for a period of time for recovery and followup. Thanks again.

I still coach and train regularly... I would like to continue... Perhaps a revision is needed?... and what type of implant would be used?..
