    TH-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of TH-cam comment sections, in our experience.
    We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

      The point is that we don't know. And claiming anything else as being the truth is nothing more than a lie. Believing such a lie is simply delusional.
      Take aliens for instance I think it's highly likely that they exist and even have visited earth probably even have been misidentified as deities in the past but I can't proof it to be so and I'm not going to claim that it is so just because it seems likely.

    • @ResidentMilf
      @ResidentMilf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@endemion06463 I'm not trying to play word games here, but define "alien." Do one-celled organisms count? If so, aliens exist confirmed because meteors have landed on earth with "alien" bacteria on them. Intelligent alien life however, has not been demonstrated at this point.
      I do agree with you, though. I'm pretty sure the Greek gods were alien adolescents who came here to mess with the heads of a primitive species because they were bored.

    • @endemion06463
      @endemion06463 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ResidentMilf, not sure if you're actually looking for a response. But yes of course when I say aliens I mean intelligent lifeforms not from this planet. Not to play word games ;) but define "demonstrated". Also I'm not so sure about the adolescent part when it comes to the notion of aliens having set themselves up (intentionally or not) to be seen as (Greek) gods back in the day. What exactly would you consider adolescent behavior anyway? Seems rather subjective what construes as adolescent behavior.

    • @davelop5507

      @@endemion06463 But we still don't have evidence for that hypothesis that it was aleins. Could've been magical unicorns from neptune. The evidence points to ancient societies that used the idea of a god or gods to explain the natural world around them because they had no freaking clue how it worked and what was the cause of say for example thunder, or earthquakes.

    • @endemion06463
      @endemion06463 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave, what's your point? I was making the point if you don't know don't say that you do. As for ResidentMilf's notion about Greek gods I don't know it's likelihood nor do I very much care. And whether the belief system back then was based on trying to explain the natural world with gods doesn't really matter. It doesn't exclude some alien(s) coming down to earth and being misidentified as a deity (/ as deities).

    A number of factors deconverted me from my Catholicism: this show, debating atheists in the comments section 12 years ago, my inherent doubts about my own religion, and my love for math/science. There was always something nagging at me about my own beliefs when I used to be religious. And that something pretty much was the logical part of my brain that told me some of the things I was taught didn't make any sense. It wasn't until 12 years ago, that I started debating atheists in the comments section as I previously mentioned, and I found that my arguments were being completely dismantled. The atheist position was much more cogent, cohesive and logical.

    A million years ago there were two 'brother' trees. The first tree's fruit was bitter, as were all the trees of it's type. However, it's 'brother' tree had a defect, this defect caused it's fruit to be sweet. Once the local animals, by chance, ate the 'new' fruit - they preferred it. Now you have more and more animals eating the sweet fruit, and pooping the sweet fruits seeds, compared to the old bitter fruit, which now the animals actively avoid. How long until the 'old' tree vanishes, replaced by the 'new' tree?

    • @Alkajatomota
      @Alkajatomota 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It depends on the mutation rate of the tree species. However at the same time that bitter tree could taste good to a particular species of animal and continue to thrive using that animal. Things can go a multitude of ways as long as they have a bias towards continuation of genes.

    • @leamael00

      6000 years, according to creationists.

    • @dx1450
      @dx1450 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The bitter tree's fruit would just rot on the ground, assuming no animal would want to eat it, and the fruit itself would fertilize the ground the seed would grow in. So yes, it could continue to reproduce but wouldn't be scattered far and wide like the sweet fruit tree's seeds.

    • @Stonehawk
      @Stonehawk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, every specimen in the entire generation of the brother trees did vanish. They died. Things tend to die when they get old. The next generation, the sweet fruit tree's offspring have, according to your premise, have an advantage... Not only are the seeds in its fruit deposited with a fresh and abundant supply of fertilizer now, but those seeds are also carried further away, into new environments, much further than the bitter fruits would've fallen on their own. So there may be no reason for the bitter fruit population to die; the sweet fruit population could now take advantage of different environmental niches. The bitter fruit variant may be able to risk investing more nutrition into its fruits now that the sweet trees are attracting the attention of animals away, and could therefore leverage a different strategy for surviving in the same area. One way or another, a species that isn't viable will simply fail to reproduce. It takes multiple generations failing to reproduce before a population is truly extinct.

    The laws of the universe could hypothetically have been such that houses are naturally occurring. In this case, you would be wrong asserting that they designed, regardless of complexity or chance. However, all the evidence we have in our universe points to buildings being made by people.
    Likewise, asserting that anything is designed in without evidence is baseless and needs to be demonstrated.

      This is child's play for Matt. He knew where this guy was heading before he knew himself.

    The caller asking for a definition of intelligence is actually a very good question. I had to pause the video and spend some time thinking about that myself.

    I like the last few minutes of the show, where Matt talks about god revealing himself to Matt. If there were a god and it revealed itself to me alone, I would be inclined to assume I was having some kind of mental breakdown.

    Don's laughter has comedic value. I've noticed that in many videos. Please laugh more, it's contagious.
