  • In this video, I tackle a unique survival challenge posed by one of my subscribers. He found a Bic lighter that was full of gas, but the striker mechanism was rusted out, and the ferro rod inside was completely corroded. The question: Can you ignite the butane gas without a working striker?
The ignition temperature of butane is 761°F and the spark temperature from a flint and steel can reach up to 800°F. It should work, right? Come see the 3 types of Flint and Steel ignition tests that I tried and witness the slow-motion moment when the Bic lighter faced the ultimate test of fire.

This is the first time one exploded on me. Usually a hole melts into the lighter and a quick very long flame is produced. Notice in the closeup of the lighter at the end of the video, no melt marks. This lighter heated up so much that the plastic could no long hold in the pressure and all that gas came out and ignited at the same time causing an explosion.

Very interesting video Mr west thank you for sharing 👍👌🔥 I use a flintlock rifle so I know how important it is to have a sharp flint...

The "flint" in a bic is ferrocerium, and that works. I'd think that a flint or chert and steel system world work too. Does chert make as hot a spark as flint or ferrocerium?
The bic concentrates the spark and the gas with it's metal shield. Could be a concentration problem, yet you tried the bic in a can!
Ignition temps are measured with an ideal mix of gas and oxygen. Maybe mix was a problem?
^^^ LOL Just my squirrel brain trying to solve an interesting problem.
That file makes a great bopper for knapping a new edge on the chert. Interesting.
Loved the illustration of what it takes to make a Bic explode!!!!
    Thank You David!

No, ferrocerium makes 3000 degree sparks and the self igniting particles of iron that are scraped from a steel are only 800 degrees. The people from 100s of years ago until today never should have called the little ferro rods in lighters and strikers, flint. They are ferrocerium.

Bic in a shirt pocket and a devious welding spark.
Yes they were banned in our shop, didn’t stop most from carrying them.

Bunsen burners are usually lit using flint strikers, so sparks should do the trick, maybe the wind was too strong.

There's a difference between a flint striker that is used to ignite a cutting torch or Bunsen burner and a flint and steel. The flint that you screw onto a striker is actually a ferro rod, 3000 degrees. Flint and steel is just 800 degrees.

Good thing we EDC a keychain ferro rod! That would surely ignite it! Fun video today for my birthday - thanks David!

you can use adead lighter, take the metal clip , now scrape tinder off the plastic , use the flint to light it, but you need a working flint

Surely a ferro rod would light it tho, right?
