This week we say goodbye to Valinor for good. We get the reaction of the Valar to Fëanor's rebellion, which is given voice by the famous prophetic Doom of Mandos (also sometimes called the Curse of Mandos). Fëanor completely loses his mind, massacring the peaceful mariners of the Teleri, and then stranding his brother and the larger host of the Noldor in the northern wastes of Aman.

Holly shit! When Mandos speaks his mind, he is utterly brutal. "You lot screwed up so bad, we won't even hear you crying from across Ulmo's territory."
This event in the book is so emotional. I remember feeling horrified when first reading the Kin slaying and then the betrayal of the boat burning 😭 Feanor became the mirror of his deepest enemy, so tragic

Feanor seems, to me, a bit mad with vengeance and arrogance at this point. Also the burning of the ships definitely brought to mind Cortés in 1519 arriving in the New World and burning his ships as well. Thanks for yet another great video!
Bravo to the voice actor who did Mandos. Oh man I think I love that speech more than Feanor's. It's just so powerful. It just keeps getting worse and worse. I'm surprised only the one brother repented and turned back. With his level headedness, I would have assumed Fingolfin would do the same.
Beyond being a great way to set up the chain of events of the First Age as you say, the Doom of the Ñoldor is a fantastic piece of literature in its own right, one the chilliest and most emotionally charged speeches I have ever read - and I have read many. I find myself breathless every time I finish re-reading it.
Tolkien's writing throughout the legendarium is absolutely brilliant, and definitely one of the main reasons of his enduring success, but here it reaches one of its tipping points, in my opinion.

I am fascinated by Tolkien lore but my ADHD struggles with the Silmarillion because of all the names and stuff so thank you so much for this series I'm thoroughly enjoying it! Very clear who is who and what is what, as opposed to when I listen to the audiobook lol
I just wanted to say, all the videos you do are fantastic! I'm currently reading through the Silmarillion for the 1st time and your videos have helped me to really flesh it all out in my mind much better. I just finished chapter 19 (Beren and Luthien) last night. Really looking forward to more of these!

I'm on my 5th or 6th time trying to read the Silmarillion. All the names, etc, always made me give up but now, I read a chapter then watch that chapters corresponding video to cement everything. I do it to make sure I got it all and got it correctly. I also like all the connections he makes to earlier chapters and future events. I feel like I'm in a college course I love.

I am reading chapter by chapter and then listening to your videos, so I have not finished the Silmarillion.
One thing I was left wondering at the end of the chapter, were all the Teleri killed? Or are there still some left that can build the ships again?
They are not all killed. The surviving Valinorean Teleri are mentioned again in the final chapter of the Quenta Silmarillion.
Huh, I never got the impression that was a test, but rather the "I will go into the West" was her accepting that without the power of the Rings, things would fade to the point where she would leave Middle Earth. More accepting that her choices were either to claim the Ring, or accept this, and she accepted it.
She does say explicitly: " I pass the test", after rejecting the clear temptation of the Ring.

This test was because she and many Noldor elves with her, like her brother Finrod Felagund, wanted to rule a realm in Middle Earth, not pursue Morgoth like Feanor and his sons did.
Most of the Doom Of Mandos was laid at Feanor and his sons.
What would have happened if the Teleri elves appeased Fëanor and The Noldor elves and gave up their ships without the fighting? How would the Valar and the Vanayar elves response to the Teleri elves' decision to surrender the ships to Feanor? Would the doom of Mandos fall on the Teleri elves as well?
I think they would come under the Doom, yes. Both the Maiar and the Teleri/Vanyar of Valinor were warned by the Valar not to either help or hinder the Flight of the Noldor, and so helping them would carry a punishment. Thingol will later be said to be brought under the curse by his actions as well, so it isn't only exclusive to their people.
@@VoiceofGeekdom When were the other elves warned not to help? I read that the Valar were upset they were being accused of making Elves their thralls, so they were resolved not to force the issue one way or the other. That shouldn't extend to telling the Noldor they can't assist, or else it would be somewhat hypocritical. The Teleri were free to donate their ships, or leave also, if they wished - if they did the later, then the doom would apply to them, as to all in the west, but not as strong as on those who swore the Oath.
So something I don't understand is that it says Fingolfin turns around, that he rejects Feanor, but then it describes him crossing the land bridge. I don't understand, this means that he is not forgiven by the Valar then? Why did he not just turn back and head south back to Aman?

I've always wondered is that Mandos proclaiming that doom as you read he says 'When you come to mandos hall' he doesn't say when you come to my halls. So who else could be the dooms men? Hmmmm
Well, remember that Mandos is actually primarily the name of the location of his dwelling in Aman, and that Námo is his actual name; and Mandos a 'nickname', basically, used when referring to the Vala that lives there (and the same goes for Irmo/Lórien, according to the Valaquenta). So I believe he was referring to the place. I think that it was Mandos himself, and I think it's intended to be read that way.
Did Eru give the Ents souls and free will like he did the gwarves, adopting both races as his sadopted children? Do Ents had a place among the Halls of Mandos?
Such knowledge is not known to the Elfs, but it would make sense that Eru adopted the Ents and Eagles as well as the Dwarfs.
Whens the next one coming out?
I am not sure. Day job stuff is getting in the way, at the moment. I am hoping to be able to restart the Silmarillion series by December, though.

In one version of The Silmarillion, Galadriel had fought against Feanor and the sons of Feanor in defense of the Teleri elves of Alqualondë.
And then she joined the Noldor again after fighting against them... Galadriel sucks.
