Hi everyone, we are okay! I got so many messages asking and in Tokyo - we experiences a strong shake but nothing like the residents up in Miyagi or Fukushima. There's still a tsunami warning. The situation is still being assessed, hard to do at night between midnight and 1am. Thank you for thinking of us. Kanae and Leo and fine - Kanae is trying to get back to sleep. I can't just yet. Please take care - these moments when you feel helpless make you think about life and how precious it is - tell someone you love how much you love them today.
Stay safe out there man. I’ve got family in Tokyo as well. Couldn’t sleep since I heard the news, also that the power’s out as well. Hope you guys get some rest esp the baby 🙏🏼
12 years, nearly to the day. Still remember the news going all day about that. We were assigned to cover it for a science project years later (how cruel can public school be)
Japan is a great country, culture, and people. Unfortunately, its geological situation is on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Science is still far from being able to predict when, where, and how strong an earthquake would be. Hopefully everything is okay. Keep safe!
Dutchsince literally called this a week ago. Go check his latest video. He does gives a warning of when and where to look for an earthquake and his predictions are true. An earthquake may not be exactly where he predicts but it'll be with a few hundred kilometers. Honestly, Dutchsince is your best source for earthquake info. If you live in earthquake prone areas, it's worth giving him a view.
I life in California and know exactly what you are talking about with your heart racing with your adrenaline flowing. I know that rumbling sound you get before you actually feel the earthquake. Glad everything is okay for you.
Well its call the pacific ring of fire and it kinda makes a big ring (hence the name) around all coastal areas of the ocean. Japan just has far more earthquakes due to it sitting on many local fault lines but that actually makes them far more prepared for the ring of fire big ones than most other major coastal areas. If a M9.2 hit the western coast of north america it would be a total disaster the earthquake early warning system is not done yet and won't be nearly as integrated as japan's due to the multiple states/countries that need to be involved to get a large enough network of sensors to give enough warning of the big one. TVs in japan will automatically turn on, radio's will turn on and retune automatically, trains/elevators/PA systems/factories all react to the early warning automated messages giving people seconds to minutes to react before the earthquake actually hits which can save many lives.
that 'movement' before the shake was the P wave hitting you (the Primary wave) of the earthquake. What shakes you and scares the crap out of everyone and causes the most damage is actually the S wave (the Secondary wave). Glad you're safe!!
Its the P wave that also gives everyone early warning thanks to the speed of light being far faster fiber optic sensors can pick up the P-waves far out in the ocean fast and the further away the more warning you get before the secondary wave hits. In Japan its used to cause the trains to emergency stop (probably why the bullet train that derailed wasn't a disaster as they were likely already stopping as hard as possible before they derailed) factories to safe, etc...
I am Japanese. In this earthquake, about 1 minute after one earthquake with a seismic intensity of 5, there was another earthquake with a seismic intensity of over 6. Therefore, people had the illusion that there was one long earthquake. In addition, since this sentence was generated by Google Translate, there may be some parts that are difficult to convey.
I am glad you, Kanae and Leo are OK. Do be prepared, stay calm and take all the necessary precautions to leave the building and stay safe. I am following the events, as many other friends. Take care.
Glad to see that you (and the fam) are okay, John. Stay safe, bud. From the earthquakes that I've experienced? That one looks like it lasted longer than the ones I'm used to.
I'm so glad you and the family are safe and ok. Earthquakes are so scary! You can run and find shelter from tornados or hurricanes but earthquakes are right under you and there's no where to go. That's frightening. Hopefully the aftershocks won't be too bad. Take care John and stay safe.🤗❤
I’m so glad you and your family are safe. Thank you for sharing your experience with the Earthquake. I was in the Earthquake at Candlestick stadium in San Francisco in the eighties and you do have a deer in the headlight daze for a bit. It was definitely an experience that is permanent in your memory. So glad everyone is safe.
I'm glad you're ok. Hug the family for us, and we'll be praying for peace. We ❤️ you guys, please take care, the after shocks will be coming unfortunately.
Yeah we felt it in Osaka. I live 14 floors up and thought I felt something and it just kept moving. Can't sleep now. I just saw that Chris Abroad is in the area. It is so crazy that we are so close the day of the big earthquake there. Glad to hear you all are okay.
I can't imagine a 7.1 I have only experienced 2 very small ones.I was in bed and I felt the bed move and heard the wood frame scrape against the floor, but other people in the area did not even know that it happened
Wow - over 500km away from Tokyo and 900 from the epicenter! Yes - it's frightening. I was talking about it today in my live stream this afternoon too! Just hadn't had one in a while.
Yeah, earthquakes can be a scary thing. We don’t get it too often here in Guam, but I actually have heard it before and experience nearly 30 years ago. I was a lot younger, around 5, almost 6 years old. This time, I have heard that rumbling nearly few days. Also, it can happen unexpectedly. But yeah, just as long you guys are safe. ❤️
I was in the forest of the mountains in Southern California where there was a large earthquake. It was in the middle of the night and there was a sound of a train coming through the camp. There were no buildings to make that noise nor trains in that mountain resort area. You are right there is a distinct earthquake noise. I’m so glad you are all safe. May the Lord bless and keep you and your family and the people of Japan safe.
Here in Northridge California in the 94 earthquake we felt and heard the rumble before it really started shaking... scariest thing I have ever been through...
Glad all is well, John. I just watched your last livestream and remember you talking about not feeling any small earthquakes lately. You folks take care!
Living in Southern California, I've had my experiences with large earthquakes. The scariest earthquake was the Landers Earthquake on June 28, 1992 at about 5 am. I live about 40 miles (60 km) away from the epicenter. That earthquake shook hard for at least 90 seconds and was 7.4 on the Richter Scale. There was a small earthquake that measured 3.1 on the Richter Scale a few days ago that was centered about 15 minutes from my house. But like you said John, earthquakes are scary and you feel totally helpless and powerless when they hit.
Yup. I lived through Ridgecrest on July 5, 2019 (8:19 PM, 7.1) and IMMEDIATELY thought it was the Big One due to its proximity with the San Andreas. Turns out it wasn't. What shocked me though, was the numerous people that were woefully unprepared, and the hidden shock I felt that if it hit at the same time a day EARLIER, distaster would strike in the form of city-destroying fires due to the fireworks being launched. It would have been San Francisco 1906 in SoCal. Thankfully it wasn't. On a side note, my dad lived through Northridge in 1994 (6.7), when it hit DAYS after he moved to LA. He nearly got crushed by the ceiling while in bed. He went to Orange County after that, and he still got scared by the shockers that were in Chino Hills and La Habra
It has been a little over 16 years (March 15, 2006) since I joined ‘You Tube’ and it was launched February 14, 2005, the prior year… so it has been around 17.1 years: I have seen it grow by leaps and bounds. As for this earthquake… “I am very relieved you and your family are safe.” Too many sad memories of the other one, which happened 11 years and 7 days ago, only to have this one follow just a few days after the anniversary of the last one; so close to the same area. I lost too many good friends in that one and I still grieve over their loss still today. It is a great reminder to all of us that Mother Nature will always win in the end and remind us about our mortality. Stay safe and many blessings to you.
Hi John long time fan of "Only in Japan" I'm glad to see that you and your family are ok from that earthquake despite the earthquakes I still think Japan is an awesome country to live in, anyway stay safe John and God bless! 💖💖💖💖
Here in Greece we had two big ones in March 3-4 2021. The first one was at 6.9 and the next day we had one at 6.2. The first one lasted for about 1 minute, and it happened just about 15km out of my town. I really know how it is. Greece is the most seismic country in Europe and Japan is the most seismic in the world. Please take care and stay safe, you John, Kanae and Leo.🥺🥺🥺
3:28 I know what you mean. I live in a country also often visited by earthquakes. That rumbling sound preludes the actual shaking for a few seconds like a big truck passing by.
Just found out about this. Glad to hear everyone and everything in the Tokyo area is okay. Hopefully Tohoku is also faring well. Take care and good night/good morning.
I am so glad all of you are ok! I have only been thru one small earthquake. I just can’t imagine going through a big one let alone ones on a regular basis!
I just heard about the earthquake a short while ago on the news, glad that you, Kanae and Leo are safe, thoughts and prayers be with you and family, everyone over there be safe, the news also reported about a tsunami.
I felt the earthquake in Yokosuka too. I was also here for the big one in 2011. The power went out at my house in 2011. No power outage this time. Tsunami warning issued. I pray everyone stays safe🙏.
Glad you are all OK. I find it interesting you said you'd been thinking about a quake the past few days. I live in Alaska and often have the same edgy feeling before we have a higher magnitude quake. Been living here 41 years, and they still get my heart going and give my anxiety a big boost😕
Glad you and your family are okay. Love your videos. I lived in Alaska some years back, so am familiar with earthquakes and their action. Take care sir.
Glad to know you ok. I am from Cyprus and we had 5.6 not long time before, so I feel for you. I was shaking for about 2 hours from adrenalin. It is quite traumatic every time its happens. You can remember everything what was going on. PTSD is anavoidable, from such events. Scariest part is that earthquake is something you can't run away from or hide from, neither predict or stop... I hope its worst that happened for tonight and you can go to sleep soon. God bless and protect you, your family and Japanese people 🙏
Hiya I just wanted to say thanks heaps for your video. I live in New Zealand and woke up to see there had been earthquakes and my son and daughter in law live in Tokyo so went online but the news channels here were crap and I fortunately found yours so it helped. Take care.
Omfg, I'm so glad you and your family are okay. T.T When I heard about this on the news, I panicked and had to jump on here to see how you're all doing. Stay safe! T.T
I know the feeling that you're feeling. I lived in San Francisco and felt the third earthquake in a swarm. It's a feeling of not being able to do anything other than brace for impact and pray that you & your loved ones make it through. Stay safe.
Only been in an earthquake once. I heard it coming a deep rumble and all my floor boards lifted throughout the house and went back down again like a wave as it came through, every thing shook and a huge bang as it passed and rumbled away/ I lived in the country so not so many buildings. Glad you and your lovely family are ok, I hope no tsunami xx
ok bro i just found your channel after I used to watch you when I was younger bruh its so nice to see you again like I'm getting hella nostalgia just wanted to say that you were a big part of my childhood!
Glad to hear you're all ok! Praying that there are no major after shocks or follow up quakes, and for mental peace too (I can only imagine show stressful it is going through that).
I don’t blame you for reaching for your camera when this happened. If you live in a place where earthquakes are prevalent (I grew up and live in the San Francisco Bay Area), you tend to be less reactive from a safety standpoint than we’re taught to be. Kanae, being a mother, had a more instinctual reaction, so she had you covered… and had Leo covered, quite instinctually! So you worked well as a team! There are so many videos and stories about dogs and cats making a run for it, 10 to 30 seconds prior to a quake coming, so your “sense” of an earthquake coming is probably very real… I’m also curious, you said you mentioned wondering if a quake was coming, in your livestream… was it “earthquake weather” (warm and still)? That’s what we always notice here in California. Back in the quake of 1989, I was in my car stuck at a dead stop in traffic, and about 30 seconds before the quake hit, the radio station stopped broadcasting… just shows you how quakes travel, it took out the station broadcast wherever it was, closer to San Francisco, before we felt the quake. Chris Broad also posted a quick video from Sendai. He was freaked out! But closer to the epicenter, so it makes sense. You may as well stay up all night editing. There will probably be aftershocks, so you won’t get restful sleep anyway! Take care!
I pray you are all ok. Just saw this on the local news. It’s so incredible, I saw you had mentioned it on your stream earlier 🙀 Please take care. I hope it’s all ok everywhere else.
Stay safe John and your family. This morning, I literally heard you complained about no earthquake for a long time, and you were worried about it. And now it happened! It is crazy!
I was in my first earth tremor in Okinawa in 2017. We were staying in the top floor, which is 5 in Japan. Only lasted a second or two. The other time I was in kyoto in August 2018. I was woken up at 5.10 am by what I thought was a truck close by to where I was staying, only to find out later it was an earthquake.
Hey John I am sorry you guys had to go through that, but I am happy it was not worse and that you and your place are also okay :) tak it easy and regroup, kind wishes
Glad you are all safe. In Adelaide we had a magnitude 3.8 earthquake at 7.20am on 6 March. It woke me up but I didn’t know what the sound was…I thought a bird had flown into the window. Earthquakes are such strange things. I hope there are not too many aftershocks there.
I went with my school a year later to Japan to understand the affected areas and we met with the people in the area. It was a really moving experience. The simulation of the earthquake was actually terrifying because like you said you couldn’t get a handle of everything moving.
Yea, I hate the "wake and shake" when it hits at night. Here in Tsuchiura was a good rumble, there was two and the second was the bigger and more up and down. We live in a one story house, so close to ground and we could feel the waves.
Hi everyone, we are okay! I got so many messages asking and in Tokyo - we experiences a strong shake but nothing like the residents up in Miyagi or Fukushima. There's still a tsunami warning.
Take care. Hope things gets better there. Stay safe.
Glad you and the family are safe!
Stay safe John and your family. This morning, I literally heard you complained about no earthquake for a long time, and you were worried about it. And now it happened! It is crazy!
Happy to hear you and your family are safe
Thank you for the updates! Stay safe John and your family!🙏❤️
Praying for everyone in Japan! Please stay safe!
That must have been scary but so glad your family is safe. I pray for the people affected by the Earthquake in Japan
Glad that you all are ok. Stay safe!
I was still living in Japan during that 2011 earthquake. It is a terrible thing having to live through, and it really scares you. Stay Safe!
Glad to hear you and your family are ok.
Hey John I am sorry you guys had to go through that, but I am happy it was not worse and that you and your place are also okay :) tak it easy and regroup, kind wishes
Good to hear everyone is safe and sound.
I'm glad you and your family are ok.
Glad to hear you are okay! Be safe!
We love you and your family, John. Hugs to all of you!
So glad you are all OK.Take care.
Glad you and your family are safe, thinking of you all.
Glad you and your family safe!
Its good that you guys are okay. Hopefully it doesnt escalate any further.
So happy you and your family are safe.
Happy to know that the tsunami warning ⚠️ has been rescinded.
Glad you're safe and sound. Prophetic you were just speaking of this earlier in the day.
I thank God you and your family are well.
So good to know that you all are okay. Thanks for letting us know.🙏
Good to hear you are all well, take care John, Kanae and Leo.
