  • Not everyone is as lucky as I am to avoid the “ostomy intro” conversation to their significant other. Zak already knew about mine by the time we met because I was very open about my stoma. It wasn’t always that way and I wish I had Convatec’s me+ program to guide me through conversations like this so I could have opened up sooner. Check out me+ here: www.convatec.c...

Hi, I'm Maggie and I have Crohn's disease. I am thrilled to be here sharing my personal experiences with Inflammatory Bowel Disease as well as living with an ostomy. I'm proud to share a little bit from a clinical experience as well, having worked as a GI pediatric nurse and ostomy telehealth nurse. I am so glad you are here. ♥ #ibd #crohnsdisease #ostomy

I too felt like it was gonna be baggage for me relationship wise until I heard someone call it a jerk repellent - since then I thought you know what that’s a brilliant way to look at it. Only those who are jerks will consider it baggage and my stoma has helped me so much that I’d rather be single with it than dating without it. And my health before the stoma would’ve been the real baggage lol. Thanks for making this video coz you’re right the thought that it makes you unattractive goes thru the mind of most ostomates. Can you guys do a video from your husbands perspective please? Like how he would’ve liked to find out and what info is TMI when it’s early days in a relationship etc please?

You are so right. I have told more people after the one year mark than I told throughout the whole first year. I am trying hard to get more comfortable with people knowing. I think once I have the proctocolectomy and get my huge uncomfortable and unsightly hernia repaired so my stomach does not look so strange it will get easier. Although I am having to have my stoma moved to the opposite side (which is what I am most nervous and uneasy about and I am not sure why), hopefully once my diseased colon and rectum are gone as well, I will feel better physically, emotionally, and have a better outlook on my body too.

I only had one time that having it, even tho I know full well I would've died if I had not done it, that time was when this so called woman started saying the same slur n I'm sure you'll know s...b..it was due to her having no imagination obv but that was it! Now most ppl know cause I'm very open to exploring crohns n ostomys etc and if I catch someone looking for it thru my clothes I'll ask if they want to see it cause I prefer that then weird looks, and I'll show it to who wants to see!

I’m really struggling. I’m used to having my central line and feeding tube, most people don’t care about the tube, doesn’t gross them out or anything. But, my intestines are becoming more and more difficult. Im in TPN and still my intestines and colon decide that they just aren’t going to keep anything in, and I have zero warning, which is horrible when you’re sleeping. They’ve brought up ileostomy before and I’ve always been too scared. Im a single mom with a special needs son, I’ve got all these medical problems, and I know it’s vain, but I can’t help but be afraid that no guy would want me with all of this. I admire your channel, you’re helping a lot of people with sharing your journey.

The right person will want you. “You”. The good bad and ugly. Baggage or not. You are worthy of love. Period. No * needed. ❤

Honey, we all have those fears, even people in perfect health. Trust me, everyone has insecurities, fears & moments of worthiness. I would say it's universal & especially in American culture. We really have a lot of generational healing to do in our society to cultivate self-worth & self-love. When you love yourself, you end up not worrying about who else will love you. Try to talk to yourself as worthy & loveable bc you are! Nothing about you is unlovable or too much trouble! Tell yourself that in the mirror, talk to yourself in thoughts. When you have these thoughts, immediately recognize them & replace the thought with truth. It takes practice but eventually you rewire your thought patterns. A lot of this is picked up in childhood in American culture of shaming, blaming & fear based parenting. Everyone has something that they are carrying around they will bring to a relationship, that is universal. Yours may be physical, but your partner may be have something mental or emotional. Would you reject someone bc of something that is apart of them? No decent person would. Tell yourself the same advice you'd give a friend if they came to with the same concerns. If it's no big deal for you, it won't be for a partner! Be confident & roll with it. No mature person would find this a big deal in 2024. If you're a good person, mother, friend & trustworthy kind person, no one would just dismiss you over an ostomy. Redirect those negative thoughts & think of them as an enemy trying to ruin your day & mind. Immediately recognize them, ask yourself if they're really true & then cast them out & replace with the truth. Practice this & I promise it will become habit.

Right now I am only comfortable talking/joking about it with friends that I know can take my ostomy seriously. Whenever someone asks, I will just say it's for "medical reasons." I'm working to get more comfortable in talking about it more casually ♡

I had mine almost 50 years ago, and back then it was a relatively unknown thing, and there certainly weren't any resources like the Internet or meplus or anything. I've only recently discovered there are channels like yours which really help to normalise it and take away the stigma that there used to be when i was a kid. You're much appreciated. What people don't understand, they fear, or ridicule, right? Especially when they are kids.

I don’t know how you popped up on my feed but I’m really happy to see you. As a nurse for 40 years this is just the kind of conversations that my post op patients should hear. Thank you for making this a new normal and helping us all find the information that will be so helpful. 😊❤️

I am one of the lucky ones...much to my husband's chagrin and with no shame I talked about poo before my surgery so talking about being an ostomate was a natural progression.

I don’t mind talking about mine, mainly because if there is an accident they are not taken by surprise, once I barley made it to the bathroom before it was beyond full so I have a fear it could happen again.
