This song will always remind me of a great friend who died graduation night from college 42 years ago. We had gone to a Who concert earlier in the year and we loved this song. I still have this album. ❤

Roger Daltrey's vocals in this are legendary. Townshend's lyrics really epitomize someone with Jekyll and Hyde feelings. Then you get Keith Moon going nuts on the drums. My only criticism of the song is that it is far too short. I always want more of the frenetic activity.

The bass lines by "The Ox" (aka John Entwistle) really make this track for me. I'm a guitar player and Townsend's riffs, both acoustic and electric, are nothing short of legendary but Entwistle's counter melody behind the acoustic guitar on the verses is just amazing. And he makes it sound, and even look, quite simple to play. Until you try to play it yourself, that is. "The Ox" is one of the most influential bass players in the history of Rock & Roll.

    • @michlkwitz
      @michlkwitz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I've always kind of felt that Pete's guitar was the rhythm section and John and Keith played lead bass and lead drums.

Yes John Entwhistle's bass lines are always stellar, often they are lead guitar lines on the bass, but never forgeting he's holding down the rhythm and highlighting Keith Moon's drums (definitely a smiling madman) shine even more so.

I remember that old floor model television 📺 cranked up so loud the speakers were distorting. I would grab my toy guitar and windmill and jump off my bed going crazy watching that concert. A great song for the older RSR family members, who remember The Who in their day, is Pete Townshend's "Slit Skirts." When it came out the message of growing old and changing really hit me -- and I was 22! LOL... Now I'm 62... and it hits even harder -- but beautifully. One of genius Pete's best on his own from The Who.

Ok, now you've done it. You've gone and played one of the tunes that reached into my heart and squeezed it so hard
that all my angst just...melted away. The first part just kills me so good it brings tears to my blue eyes...
The second part is pure humanity that reminds me that while some of us are long peninsulas, no man is an island...
Speaking of islands, my suggestions after this reaction is Simon and Garfunkel's *I Am A Rock* which ties into this tune rather nicely...
    Thanks

High high energy from Moon on the drums, Townshend and his famous windmill style, Daltry with his tasseled shirts and throwing the microphone all around, and finally Entwistle who seems the most calm but is just as essential to The Who "sound".

Only saw them once, here in OKC, back when dirt was young. The tickets were at the fairgrounds arena box office and that was a window outside the building. It was a crowd so packed around that window, you had to climb up the window ledge and fall back on the crowd that would then hand you out to the edge to escape. Good times.... :)

The entire Who's Next album is superb! Drop the needle on track one and enjoy all the way to the end.

A & J, the member of The Who most overlooked is undoubtedly bassist John "The Ox" Entwistle. If you're up for an absolute banger with arguably the greatest bass guitar work in all of rock n roll, you need to give a listen to "The Real Me." Trust me, you've never heard anything like it!🔥

Love is vengeance that is never free. Slow then boom fast . Great beat and it is what you would do if you loved someone., but he is sad and lonely .

What an absolutely incredible singer Rodger Daltrey is. From is Extreme manly bar room floor voice to his complete opposite abilities to sing softly was so much Harmony in his voice and Keith Moon the drummer constantly having that drum Whip or drum Bang

Give a listen to 'Pure and Easy' from the 'Odds and Sods' album. It was written, as was 'Behind Blue Eyes', for a double album ( 'Lifehouse') and was one of the stronger songs cut out when the 'Lifehouse' project morphed into 'Who's Next'.

When you have been utterly destroyed emotionally, cut deep and hurt bad but had to hide that pain and carry on for
the sake of others who are innocent and still need you to be strong for them. When you've had to swallow that pain
and bury that anger deep behind a façade, bite your tongue and pretend to be happy when you truly never can be again.
Then even years later you can listen to this song and cry, scream let out your demons and then pull yourself together and
    carry on again.

I was born the year this song was released, so I was to young to have seen the band with Moon, but got to see them Live once with John, and twice without. I became a fan in the early 90's, and they have been my favorite band ever since, just an amazing group front to back, and head to toe. Pete is without question one of rocks best song writers(and a very good guitarist), as you can easily tell from this tune. Keith was an amazing drummer who lost a few steps in his later years, but in top form, is one of rocks best. John as a bass player was the GOAT, and Rodger on vocals was a perfect fit to Pete's songs, and was one of rocks best front men who still has it 50+ years later. Do yourselves a favor, and watch some of their LIVE content, as they were as much a visual band, as they were audio. And much of their career was filmed in 35MM film, and all this time later, most footage looks and sounds amazing. Long Live Thee OOOOoooooo!!!
