It's over 30 years ago that as newly qualified teacher, I played this song to my students after reading a book set during the Pinochet regime in Chile. It's as sad and relevant today as it was then. What a sorry state our world is in. Have we learned nothing?

When I was a teenager our English teacher introduced us to "Englishman in New York", "Russians" and this beautiful song. Through Sting we improved our vocabulary but more important, started thinking about the world...one of the greatest musicians ever. Beautiful man with a beautiful soul. Now I make my kids listen to Sting so they get to know what great music is. Love you Sting.

I feel you. One of the closest and most important persons in my life (my mom) still struggles not only with the poverty inherited by the right-wing policies specially for people that (for many reasons) cannot adjust to the labor market, but also with the trauma of terror, persecution and loss, to the point of having delusions and paranoia associated with it. She has even been living on the streets for a year, out of poverty and madness and I still don't have enough money to help her. I've heard she's not the only one. I have had to become used to live with a broken heart, in the face of many chileans, even young ones, who are still saying that either everything was justified, or that we should forget it already. How could we forget, if the wound is still alive, if there's still no guarantee that this will not happen again? I send you a hug from the distance, from your family's land, and from someone who is still part of that now invisible community that made us the target of selfish and powerful people to persecute and terrorize.

I am son of the Chilean dictatorship,
I was brought up as an obedient son,
      Never get into trouble,
      Let alone politics,
      Never saw or heard anything,
      Specially in the news,
I was told we were in war with Marxism
But also I was told that we were free,
Nothing could have been further from the truth
Thousand of my people dead, just because of their ideas, and also because of being poor,
As a country, we have no appreciation for human life in every single way,
But we are the “best economy in Latinoamérica”,
      Uneducated, physically and mentally ill,
We are into a deep relationship with deception,
We don’t want to see nothing that shows out purulent past,
      We are no longer citizens,
      Actually, we never were,
      Just consumers,

This is probably one of the most controversial songs ever produced by Sting, however to this day no one denies is also one of his most beautiful artistic works ever. The lyrics, the musical arrangements, the message is simply a homage to a historic time now forgotten by new times. One day a reporter asked him about this song, and his answer was frankly quite unusual:" I will be very careful next time I get involved into this type of projects..." he said the reporter. Probably he later found out how heavely involved was the US goverment supporting Pinochet and how much of the people that supported this maniac are still in high chains of power. Also would not be surprissing that he learned being Chile historically tied with British intellingence, he was getting into a very fragile ground with his own goverment, since most likely the brits teamed up with the CIA to squash the socialist movement in Chile. That answer Sting gave still covers a lot of ground to this day.

Three decades ago I was abducted by military intelligence agents and detained for three months. Unlike my best friend and thousands of other desaparecidos I was surfaced and released. Members of my family, friends and comrades danced for me and saved me. Now a new dictatorship/dictator is emerging. The good fight is not over. Let's keep dancing, dancing, dancing.
Ouch!

Those were the years of the tragedy in South America and of the brave mothers. Only a mother can understand the pain of another mother who has lost her child. This song reminds me of the strength of mothers, the strength of my mother and how much a mother is within each child. And when the mother is gone, her love always remains in the heart. Seven minutes that simply flies by. Timeless has a dual meaning. Gentle, soothing, sad, and uplifting. Who played that beautiful solo at the end? That's perfection.

I have not heard this song in over 10 plus years. However, the song is just as relevant today as it was back then. I'm actually in tears hearing this. HAVE WE NOT LEARNED ANYTHING AS A PEOPLE?! WHERE IS THE HEART CONDITION?!

This song easily can take an award as the most melancholic song of all times!

Why are these women here dancing on their own?
Why is there this sadness in their eyes?
    Why are the soldiers here
    Their faces fixed like stone?
I can't see what it is they despise
    They're dancing with the missing
    They're dancing with the dead
They dance with the invisible ones
    Their anguish is unsaid
    They're dancing with their fathers
    They're dancing with their sons
    They're dancing with their husbands
    They dance alone
    They dance alone
It's the only form of protest they're allowed
I've seen their silent faces they scream so loud
If they were to speak these words
    They'd go missing too
Another woman on the torture table
    What else can they do
    They're dancing with the missing
    They're dancing with the dead
They dance with the invisible ones
    Their anguish is unsaid
    They're dancing with their fathers
    They're dancing with their sons
    They're dancing with their husbands
    They dance alone
    They dance alone
One day we'll dance on their graves
One day we'll sing our freedom
One day we'll laugh in our joy
    And we'll dance
One day we'll dance on their graves
One day we'll sing our freedom
One day we'll laugh in our joy
    And we'll dance
    Ellas danzan con los desaparecidos
    Ellas danzan con los muertos
    Ellas danzan con amores invisibles
    Ellas danzan con silenciosa angistia
    Danzan con sus padres
    Danzan con sus hijos
    Danzan con sus esposos
    Ellas danzan solas
    Danzan solas
    Hey Mr. Pinochet
    You've sown a bitter crop
It's foreign money that supports you
One day the money's going to stop
    No wages for your torturers
    No budget for your guns
Can you think of your own mother
    Dancin' with her invisible son
    They're dancing with the missing
    They're dancing with the dead
They dance with the invisible ones
    Their anguish is unsaid
    They're dancing with their fathers
    They're dancing with their sons
    They're dancing with their husbands
    They dance alone
    They dance alone

This still makes me so sad, it's hard to stop the tears. There are still so many like Pinochet in this world. Still too many dancing alone.

I love this song. Thank you Sting. I'd never heard it before. "Hey Mr. Pinochet, you sowed a bitter crop". In deed. One day all men will be called to account for their deeds in this life. There men like these will finally be made to see. This song is beautiful and although it is sad it is also full of hope.
