Madam, you may correct your lecture 1. Tunnel from dam intake gate to Surge Shaft bottom is almost horizontal, in which water free flow at atmospheric pressure called Head race tunnel. 2. From surge shaft to turbine water flow through pressure tunnel called pressure shaft, in which water immediately drop from higher level 3. Size of pressure shaft is much less the HRT.. 4. At the entry point of pressure shaft, we need to provide the valve, in case we close the valve, Surge Shaft will work to reduce the water pressure generated due surging .

You are wrong, Foreba is not used like surge tank it is used as a reservoir and placed before sluice gate or valve ....😭😭 . Because of you ,I lost one marks in exam😭

In concealed penstock forebay cannot be used only Surge tank is used. But for open penstock forebay can be used. It depends on ratings of power plant
