I was 17 when this song was released. It was played a million times a day on MTV. Eddie Vedder is a genius song writer. He dared to bring this kid's suicide to light in a time when mental health was a stigma. No one ever spoke about these issues in 1992 but he felt the need to tell the story of that young man. At the time I didn't know it was a real story, but when I found out, I loved the song even more.

I think it's definitely one of the most culturally important music videos to come out of that time period, about a topic that has always been and will always need to be talked about openly. I do kind of wish though that the real Jeremy didn't end up getting doxxed to the entire world, because there's no way of knowing if that's what he would have wanted.

@@boudicaastorm4540 His family has said the song brought a lot of pain and unwanted attention, as well as doesn't accurately portray the young victim. It's important to look up his story as well as understand the song is more symbolic and also some self inserts from the songwriters own troubles.

I'm a teacher and I really love this song. Whenever I have troubling students, I always think of Jeremy.
We can learn from his story.
Out of all the crap he had to go through, the straw that broke the camels back was his teacher asking him to get a slip. I always remember that and I always give the kids a break. We dont know what's going on at home, so we should give them a break. School is not supposed to be a prison.

I love how the song is from the perspective of a classmate who witnessed the horror of Jeremy's final moment. Eddie did an incredible job with the lyrics but even more importantly the tone. I could just imagine a kid going home to his parents and being so traumatized that all they could utter was "Jeremy spoke in class today."

    • @ellieispurple5691
      @ellieispurple5691 ปีที่แล้ว +168

I did a deep dive on the true story of Jeremy, as well as the inspiration. Jeremy Wade has just switched schools. He was not being bullied. He had been battling severe depression, was an introvert and was dealing with his parents separation. Losing his friends from his previous school, losing his parents marriage, and feeling totally alone because of all of his battles, it was just too much. The bullying part of the song, was inspired by Vedders own recollection's of bullying a kid named Brian, when he was around the age of Jeremy. Later, Vedder heard that Brian, had shot up a Science building, where people would go to look at space and planets, etc.. not a school, but separate building. Vedder saw the story of Jeremy, in a very small, 1991 news article. Emotions came flooding in and his own thoughts and guilt inspired him to take the tiny news article about a kids death, and blow it up into a song with now legendary status. He wanted to bring meaning to the lives of all of the Jeremy's out there.

@@ellieispurple5691the point is how many Jeremies or Brians there are in America, children who struggle alone without any support, that are too young to be able to express their feelings. To me, the point of this song is to showcase the lack of empathy, the cruel and cold judgement, and comments people make on children without realising the impact of their words and acts. If we are not taught how to love, appreciate and respect at a young age, then neither should we get taught how to hate and reject.

It took me until I was grown & learned that one state had started allowing kids to call police on their bullies....to even think of it as a crime. I was bullied from nursery school (yes, met my first demon there, named Daryl) until senior year of high school. Teachers did little to nothing about it & a couple even joined in on a joke or two. Even in this day & age, bullying is NOT taken that seriously at all. It could be stopped pretty easily, if the school administration or even the government actually cared.

This song is based off a boy named Jeremy Delle, he was a sophomore at Richardson High School in Richardson, TX. Throughout most of his short life, his parents ignored him and were always quarreling. To make matters worse, each day at school, he was harassed and tormented by his entire class, and it drove him into a depression. Finally, on January 8, 1991, Jeremy walked into his classroom and shot himself in front of his entire class, leaving his classmates in shock and horror.

School was a hellish time. I had someone play a love related joke for 18 months, really questioned my life and wasn't suicidal but got up on a multi storey carpark and went out to the edge before security called me back. My mother sided with THE OTHER SIDE. Talk about farking abandoned. She still ALWAYS sides with the enemy, as evidenced in her brothers recent divorce. More friends with his ex than she had ever been. Her brothers wife was cheating on him with her boss who she previously called a narcissist, and even said "I can date whoever I want " straight to him. My mother will justify ANYONE almost to spite me. Even justified stalin putting people in gulags (80% were former nasi concentration camps where many were half stavred and often froze to death". Talk me into something to embarrass me in front of others that "I was wrong" as soon as I expressed the same opinion she talked me into. Good one day, arguing or turns on you the next. Me and my sister have talked about it and she'll be getting the appropriate nursing home. My sister has a nutrition elective as part of her psychology degree, and has realised years later with her own kids that some of her teenage problems were caused essentially by malnourishment. We ate so little and mom would always get good stuff for herself.

It's frustrating to see how the entertainment industry operates. They're quick to censor videos that bring awareness to important issues like suicide and bullying, yet they allow explicit content like nudity and songs with explicit lyrics such as "WAP" to go uncensored. It's ironic and disheartening how these priorities seem to be skewed, favoring sensationalism over messages that could make a positive impact.
I'll treasure this song until my dying day or until the end of my life, whichever comes first. At some point, I'll share this song with my children, using it as a powerful tool to teach them about resilience and standing up against bullying. It's more than just a song to me; it's a testament to perseverance and the importance of facing challenges head-on, no matter what obstacles may arise.

I think censorship in general is wrong. I don't know why you have to bring other pieces of art down to make a valid point. Also to point out that WAP would be much more scrutinized in 1992 than Jeremy. Obviously times have changed since then and if this song was released now it would not be controversial in the slightest, infact controversy is what made Jeremy so popular anyways.

The issue is the blatant inconsistency in censorship. 'Jeremy' tackles serious issues like suicide and bullying and gets censored, while explicit content like 'WAP' is freely available, even to minors. Why is it censored to raise awareness about bullying and suicide but okay to show twerking and talk about sex and drugs without any warning? Just a reminder, kids are on TH-cam too, so there's that. It's not about times changing or what would be scrutinized in 1992 versus now. It's about the skewed priorities of the entertainment industry that favor sensationalism over important messages. It's frustrating and hypocritical, plain and simple.

So whenever I listen to this song, I still mourn for Jeremy and all the Jeremys out there. Eddie is a brilliant singer and lyricist to turn this heartbreaking story into art. Since people are saying the don't know the back story of this song here it is
On January 8, 1991, Jeremy Delle, a 15-year-old sophomore, died by suicide with a Smith & Wesson model 19-4 .357 magnum revolver in front of his second-period English class. Delle was described by peers as "real quiet" and known for "acting sad". Delle was tardy that morning, and after going to his second-period class he was told to get an admittance slip from the school office for arriving late. Delle left the classroom, but instead of going to the school office he went to his locker where he had the revolver concealed, and returned to the classroom with it in his possession. Delle walked to the front of the classroom, and announced "Miss, I got what I really went for", he then put the barrel of the firearm in his mouth, and pulled the trigger before his teacher or classmates could react. Lisa Moore, a schoolmate, knew Jeremy from the in-school suspension program: "He and I would pass notes back and forth and he would talk about life and stuff", she said. "He signed all of his notes, "Write back." But on Monday January. 7th he wrote, "Later days." I didn't know what to make of it. But I never thought this would happen." The incident inspired the Pearl jam song "Jeremy". The band's lead singer, Eddie Vedder, read a newspaper account of the incident and was moved to write the song almost immediately

It also has some influence from Vedder's own experience with a fellow classmate of his committing gun violence.
"The second story the song is based on, involved a student that Vedder knew from his junior high school in San Diego, California. He elaborated further in a 1991 interview:
'I actually knew somebody in junior high school, in San Diego, California, that did the same thing, just about, didn't take his life but ended up shooting up an oceanography room. I remember being in the halls and hearing it and I had actually had altercations with this kid in the past. I was kind of a rebellious fifth-grader and I think we got in fights and stuff. So it's a bit about this kid named Jeremy and it's also a bit about a kid named Brian that I knew and I don't know...the song, I think it says a lot. I think it goes somewhere...and a lot of people interpret it different ways and it's just been recently that I've been talking about the true meaning behind it and I hope no one's offended and believe me, I think of Jeremy when I sing it.' Fucking makes me cry, especially that part at the end. I think a lot of us can relate to what that kid went through. I think of Jeremy and wish I could give him a hug and let him know it will be okay eventually. You can even see in Eddie’s eyes in this video this song has deep meaning for him and that it’s more than just inspiration from something he read in the paper… you don’t pull a song like this out of you unless you feel it. Unless you’ve been there. I’m so grateful he is still with us and found an escape. It does get better. If you’re there now, whether you’re a kid in middle or high school, or you’re an adult and you’re feeling like the way Jeremy did, I can assure you it DOES get better…and that is coming from someone who has been through hell and back numerous times. My childhood was torture…horrendous abuse, I ran away from it all at 15, I had to deal with the mental impacts of it, I went CRAZY, I got roped into a cult for 2 years after running away from it all which just made it worse, and wanted to die so many times. I got bullied in school, I dropped out. I’ve felt like everybody hates me and that I am completely alone and have nothing, I’ve felt like I’m an annoyance and a burden to everyone, I’ve felt like I’m slave to depression and pain and that I would never be happy because it would never be in the cards for me and that everything would always fail, so why bother… none of that is true. You are NEVER alone, you are loved more than you know. There are so many people out there you don’t even know yet that love you and cherish your existence. Reach out, the internet is an amazing place to find help. People talk shit about it but hell, if you’re here and a PJ fan, go on tumblr to the Pearl Jam fan community and say you need a friend, we would love to be your friend. For me, I got by with music, and I found the REAL authentic Jesus (who I found just wants you as you are and loves you as you are and wants you to be authentic and will heal your every wound)…and He saved me, so patiently and lovingly like I have never experienced in my life. I’m just saying personal experience, I’m not trying to be preachy. My point is… I’ve been through so much shit and it got better. I DID start to heal, and good things - amazing, beautiful things - CAN and WILL happen. Don’t give up. It gets better, I promise you it does. People care. I care. We want you here. We want to see it all get better for you. You never know what tomorrow may bring… y’know, you could meet your soulmate, or get an opportunity to live out your dreams, or you could start to dream for the first time and that in itself is a miracle, you could find your best friend, you could get to witness a double rainbow, you could come across a puppy on the side of the road that needs you and becomes your best friend, there’s so much joy in life that you can and WILL experience if you stay… plus, MUSIC is a reason to stay. You are loved. I love you. Friggin’ Eddie Vedder loves you. God loves you. Your future friends love you mean it. The real you and all the little things that make you who you are, and all those little things are so special and precious, and whoever has stomped on them is wrong in every way, and is only acting like that because they don’t like themselves… not because of you. You are precious and so valuable the way you are. I love you! Reach out. Don’t give up. ❤️

    At home
    Drawing pictures
    Of mountain tops
    With him on top
    Lemon yellow sun
    Arms raised in a V
And the dead lay in pools of maroon below
    Daddy didn't give attention
Oh, to the fact that mommy didn't care
    King Jeremy The Wicked
    Ruled his world
    Jeremy spoke in class today
    Jeremy spoke in class today
    Clearly I remember
    Pickin' on the boy
    Seemed a harmless little fuck
    But we unleashed a lion
    Gnashed his teeth
And bit the recess lady's breast
    How could I forget
And he hit me with a surprise left
    My jaw left hurting
    Dropped wide open
    Just like the day
Oh, like the day I heard
    Daddy didn't give affection, no!
And the boy was something that mommy wouldn't wear

I do too! :'( Being picked on and bullied tortures you inside and you don't know what to do. So my husband and I (who were picked on when we were younger) taught our children to defend themselves! Don't Touch Them! But the second they touch you? You beat the crap outta them! My husband used to wrestle with our two daughters and our son when they were little. I learned later it was his way of "bonding" with them especially the girls. That in turn taught all three of our kids how to defend themselves and that's exactly what happened. And the person who hit first got suspended because what our child did to the one who hit them was "self-defense!" It is a sad way to have to raise your kids, but if you don't teach them to defend themselves, the bullies will just keep on picking and picking until the child can't take no more! So they either act out by taking guns to school and shooting bullies and innoccent students, or they commit suicide, it's that bad for them! So there is my advice.TEACH YOUR KIDS TO DEFEND THEMSELVES! But instill it in their brain, DON'T HIT THEM UNTIL THEY HIT YOU FIRST! Then go off on them!~LuLu~

    • @blondwiththewind
      @blondwiththewind 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Eddie Vedder is also taking responsibility and relating his own actions in taunting another student in his own school when he was young. This song is in part a tale of recognition and remorse......and a warning to other bullies that get their kicks from other people's pain.
He's making a point that there are often reasons why people "tip over".... and some of it often has to do with inordinate pressures put upon them by others that severely stress them and affect the balance of their minds.
Make no mistake: this is a cautionary tale.

About a year before this song came out, I was a 16 year old junior in high school and my 1st period teacher had to tell the class that a kid I used to hang out with had died the night before. It turned out he had shot himself in the head. We were not only friends, we were born on the exact same day. When this song came out it hit me hard and I thought of my friend. So yeah, this song has special meaning for me. Also, my name is Jeremy.

@@tat2jitsu411 Mine was my best friend Henri. When we were both ten he was killed by his father. Our teacher told us he died from a made-up disease called "quick pneumonia." (I know, there is a quick form of pediatric pneumonia, but that's not what happened, and it's not what our teacher described.) His dad just beat him to death. He punched him so hard in his chest it injured his lungs, and he died in bed when the fluid built up so much he couldn't breathe. He suffocated slowly and in severe pain without medical attention. That was 1977 in rural Minnesota, and his dad was never prosecuted. Everyone knew what was going on. He had fresh black eyes and new bruises every week. He said he had to get hit (never that his dad hit him) because he mouthed off to Dad again. Everyone knew what really happened. (I spoke with a sheriff's homicide detective ~10 years later, and he opened a homicide investigation and read the pertinent part of the autopsy report to me. That's how I know what happened, and how I know the Wright County medical examiner and sheriff's department also knew but did nothing.) Not exactly on-point with this thread, but I guess bullying isn't the only way to torment a kid, and suicide isn't the only horrific way to die.
But in my life, the only person I've ever known who was bullied worse than me was Henri. His beatings I now realize had caused brain damage, and he was kinda low functioning. (I didn't have that insight when I was ten.) Even our teachers found ways to be cruel to him. Even I did. I'm told that's common among kids who are lowest in the social hierarchy and bullied. It doesn't make me feel any better though. Henri never did it to me. Try to erase that from my blackboard.

Trying to stop the bullies, in my experience, enables them to exploit the bullied in new, creative ways. School administrations are simply putting bandaids on the issue since they don't understand the underlying cause of the problem or how it truly functions thanks to the way it's classically displayed in the media.

"Try to erase this from the blackboard" so many quotes in this song but that one sticks the most. No pun intended.

so in '92 I was in 6th grade and i went thru basically what jeremy went thru here. so when i saw this, it became my favorite video that year and i was so happy at the ending. keep in mind that in '92 there were NO school "counselors" nor mentors like today. nobody thought things like this would happen back then. ofc TODAY i wouldnt laugh or breath a sigh of relief NOW but i can sympathize with ppl who do. lest you been theu it, you wouldnt understand

I got picked on because I was a good boy and taught well by my parents. I'm 60 now and my parents are gone and now I'm evil.

+cs chaka It's near the top of any genre of music in general because it speaks of a topic that is meaningful, not just some weird crap that a singer is talking about because he's high on drugs, or someone rapping about ho's he is pimping, or drugs he's smoking, or some girl singing about kissing another girl and how she liked it...

+Steve C. Love your comment most of music is bout the old shot bitches and Holes and about how bad they are compared to other, they all say the same old shut! and I still hear the same every city I go to why don't we take them all and put them together and let them of all races kill each other and we would get rid of a lot of problem s in our cities
