Talbot: The Winter's Tale (The Royal Ballet)

Following his highly popular Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, created for The Royal Ballet back in 2011, Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon draws on the same music and design team to create ‘a triumph’ and ‘something entirely new’ (Daily Telegraph) in this evocative reimagining of The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare’s enduring story of jealousy, compassion and forgiveness. Wheeldon’s staging is ‘eye-delighting’ (Financial Times), effortlessly capturing the work’s profound emotional trajectory, with powerful designs by Bob Crowley, Joby Talbot’s ‘skilful’ score (Guardian) and constantly inventive choreography. Strong company performances - among them Edward Watson’s ‘masterly’ portrayal of Leontes (Financial Times), Zenaida Yanowsky’s ‘commanding’ Paulina and Sarah Lamb as a ‘serene’ Perdita (Independent) - put the finishing touches to a gleaming production, one that will be treasured for years to come.

Hi There folks. Its very unusual for a ballet to have a stage band, especially when they are playing real instruments and not miming. Some of the players in this band are also performers from other West End stage shows including The Lion King. I made the percussion instrument that is centre stage of the band it is a mini Cimbalom. Designed exclusively for this performance and conceptualised by the player Greg Knowles who commissioned it. The nitty gritty design work was done by me. I later made a sister instrument to this one that was bought by The Bolshoi Ballet when they performed this show.

A ballet of two( 3) parts. Act 1 very dramatic , less actual dance but a lot of twisted angular shapes, and
brilliant story telling. Act 2 burst full of joyous energy , colour and fantastic dancing, Steven McRae shines. Act 3 very short again dramatic and all brought to a satisfying conclusion.S glad I added it to my growing library.

Saw the ballet in its National Ballet of Canada version, but am such a Stephen McRae fan that I southt this out and now have the Royal's DVD.

We saw the show tonight with the same amazing cast. The video version is unfortunately not as vibrant as live but still very nice indeed..it seemed Steve's Tour en l'Air at 2:27 was much bigger tonight live for some reason. Thanks for the great show RB! Music was fantastic too especially in Act 2, which just kept coming around and around.
