Is it better to make holes slanted or just not round?

The awl he used to make the holes for hand stitching, is there a difference like a round one or diamond shape one?

I can tell you that it's easier for me to get a better looking and more uniform stitch line with the diamond awl, versus a round awl.

And it's easier to push a properly sharpened diamond awl than a round awl, especially when doing 1/4 inch and thicker projects.

Can the whole saddle be hand stitch. I don't have access to a heavy duty sewing machine

Sure can! Just adds to the hours you'll spend on it.
