10 Tricks To Train Your Rat/Mouse First - Mini Tutorials

- An updated video on what trick's I'd recommend training your rats first. The first few (spin, paw, come, jump through a hoop, jump to hand) are confidence building tricks, with come possibly being the most important "trick" you can train your rat.
Target, backup, and pull a string are also pretty easy to train, and have the added bonus of being the basis for many more complex tricks.
Finally, fetch and basketball can be considered a bit harder to teach, but are the basis and groundwork for just about every item-based trick out there. I recommend training your rat(s) tricks in this order as well, so by the time you get to fetch and basketball, your rat will already understand that their actions influence if they get a reward or not and you will know how your rat learns, and thus be able to train them more effectively.
Anyway, have fun training, and if you have any questions, feel free to comment them down below.

Can most mice do this or is your mouse special?
@@pb1209 they're rats. I'd say all hand-raised rats can learn these. And even rats that weren't hand raised could probably do them after some trust training. Rats learn quickly, especially with the reward system
It’s been a while since this comment but I just want to mention that I’ve never hand raised or bottle feed a rat. All my rats are either pet store rats, feeder rats, or rehomed rats from Craigslist or Facebook. Some have been shy, one even aggressive (one black and white girl in this video was a biter - never bit when training however and it was a great way to bond) but most have been perfectly friendly and many are cuddly and playful and love interacting outside of training.
So yeah, where they come from makes no difference! Any rat can learn and in fact my 3 best learners all came from different places and were completely unrelated.
As for mice they can learn any trick a rat can - the only difference is that mice tend to be more flighty so you may have to work more on comfort in whatever area you use to train first but they very much can learn anything a rat or dog can.
@@ShadowTheRat What treats are you giving your rats in this video? It looks like a sheet of pink paper?
can hamsters do this?
Oh my goodness. When you're made your "come here" noise, my rats both came to me.
Hehe, they've learned well!
Savannah Butler made mie look too shes gonna end up with every rat in the neiborhood lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 so funny
Same but I have one rat
Omg
Seeing them all just pop out and run into your lap was just the cutest thing ever 😭💕
instructions unclear, my rat ran away and became a chef
I laughed way too much at that lmaoo
He even has his own movie and restaurant now.
LMAOOOOOOO
😂
same 🤔
When you did the “come” noise and they just started appearing I died laughing. This is so adorable. Thank you for posting these!!!! Very helpful as a first time rat owner 💕💕
I once went to someone's house and they said "C'mere" and slowly about a million chickens started coming over the hill and I was there for about half an hour but they were still coming. The "come" command reminds me of that lol.
one day when I move out of home, I will have trillions of rats hiding around my house so that if someone insults me I can just click my tongue and my army of rats will advance on them.
fluffaluffy lumfuffle Lmao I have nine chickens and if i call them by squawking ‘here chick chick chick’ they all come running towards me like little t-rex’s
My question is why does someone have a hill in their house.

I_am_a_gacha_editor Gachasaurous Tf kind of question is that lol

Have you ever done a TV talent show?? If not, you should. People need to see how incredible this is.
Yes u should
Yes !!! U definelty should to show how smart rats really r
@@ceceliarittenhouse5767 oh imagine if she has like a LOT of rats...
"Soo, what are you going to perform today?"
She makes the noise and a herd of rats all came running at her 😂
Agreed
Thank you so much! This really helped! My 2 rats can now spin :D Sometimes when they see me with food, they spin like 10 times looking at me xD
i put them in a different container to train them since theirs is somewhat small they were more interested in exploring than the chees XD
lol that would be funny. **eats sandwich** rats: **spinning aggressively on the ground**
John Jerde, I’d recommend using something like apple, blueberry, cheerios as a treat as rats are lactose intolerant and shouldn’t eat to much cheese if you don’t know already
my dog does this!! it’s all fun and games until she gets herself dizzy lmao
Amy Kuang just a question, how are you rats really big? I want to get a rat but I’ve seen that some grow really big and some don’t so I’m so confused :(
2:26 Now come my precious rats, NOW ATTACK!
Haha, funny thing is I really wasn't prepared for them to rush over so fast! It was really strange, almost like they were just waiting for me to call them lol
Hi! I had a tan hooded rat named Willy for almost 3 years when I was in high school. Also had gerbils, hamsters, a guinea pig, a tortoise, and friendly squirelles in our wood pile. Willy was so wonderful..., I never thought to teach him any tricks, and after watching several of your videos, I wish I had! I don't know how old you are, you sound very young, but you are very knowledgeable and do a great job on these videos! Thanks for the memories of Willy!
You make it look soo easy, my two rats are just climbing up me and grabbing my hand like THERES FOOD IN THERE GIVE ME but I know it takes time so I’m not giving up
Seeing how smart these little creatures are never gets old. When I first told my mom I had rats for pets she was pretty much repulsed, she fell in love with the dumbo ears and when she saw how loyal and affectionate they are she warmed up a bit more. Their intelligence and ability to be trained just like dogs was really what sealed the deal for her. She loves them as much as I do now. I can't wait to try the rope pulling trick, I've wanted to teach them that for so long but I couldn't find a video or instructions/tips that explained or showed it well enough until now. So cool!
I can't thank you enough for this video. Teaching my rats to come when I want them to has been the best thing I ever did. Getting them back in the cage after free roam time is now a breeze and the other day one of my babies managed to escape the play pen while I was in the bathroom. I called her and she came right to me. Thank you!!
Brilliant rat ownership! Stimulating their intelligence with these games is brilliant. Well done.
Agree!
Great video, rats are very smart. You did a good job training them.
:)
Wow, I'm subscribed, I've never had such a detailed way to train a pet, you made it simple and broke it down. Thx😊😊😊
Pet smart usually has fancy rats available. Just keep and eye out on your local pet stores.
I tried this on my hamster and I just found out his IQ is surprisingly low.
I've had both hamsters and rats. The 2 can't be compared xD Hamsters are really not intelligent
Same with me but it was a big fat oof😅😩😪
Why would you think it would be the same?
Emza 89 😂😂
@@Lulu-xl5cm what about gerbils then 0-o
I never thought in a million years I would love a rat but I now love rats and will do anything for him. Thanks so very much for the video and advice ❤
I wish I had tutorials like this when I had my rats! I knew they were smart but I never even thought about training them. I had mine over 30 years ago and your videos brought back so many memories. Thanks 👍
So very nice to watch, your video !
I already knew that a pet rat was likely the best companion animal one could possibly have, better than a cat or a dog in my opinion, but your video here expands my vision even further.
Bravo for posting !!
I love this! I have trick titles with my dog and when I realized everything rats can do I was so inspired! Exactly what you're doing is what I want to do ❤️ and inspire others too hopefully ✌️ you're awesome
I just wanted to say I love your videos! rats and squirrels are very different, but have many similarities that I try to learn from :)) my squirrel frank has started to learn spin and paw, but he's very focused on the treat and wants to climb me and grab it from my hand instead of doing the tricks sometimes 🤦🏻♀️😂🐿
Came back to this video, it’s been a couple years since my mouse died but I still remember teaching him how to spin and jump onto my hand, all thanks to you! I miss him dearly🥹
I bought a dumbo rat off craigslist, it's so nice to come home, make my come sound, and hearing him running over to me. It makes my day
I just got 2 female rats and bought them a big spacious cage. I am going to start trying to train them very soon, thank you for this video :) it's the first time i've owned rats but I think it'll be so much fun
This is incredible! 😃 I've owned rats for years but never thought to teach them tricks, will definitely be trying now! Thank you! My apologies if you've already said, but what do you use as treats/rewards?
Looks like puffs, is a baby snack
you can try fruits/berries too
Very cool! Great work with your rats! They’re smart and affectionate and are great little pets!
I had my rats doing a couple of simple tricks, but nowhere near as advanced as yours. You're a star, your training video will be a great help.
This is the cutest thing. Its amazing how smart they are and how fast they catch on to things.
This is so cute
Sky yes it is
Of course! just only teach one trick at a time!
Oh yes, let those rats scramble around your house and eat your food .. Let them attract those dear roaches
I have me own rats.
I think so too. It's so cute !
Love the tutorial! Awesome job explaining!🐀❤️
As a psychology student and a rat lover, I absolutely love this! 😍
Listen I respect tf out this video.
The innocence in how hard they work for something that to us seems so insignificant all the while blowing the minds of the uninitiated.
I intend on putting this to use
Their little run is adorable 😂😂💜💜
Im struggling with my two girls, Marge and Mo , they are just too crazy , you make it easy. Excellent..
I love watching your videos 😁 I wish I knew the steps of training because Ruby would have had so much fun doing tricks like this. The next rat I adopt I will definitely teach using these tips. Great video thank you!!!
thanos: has a BIG army
me: *makes the calling noise*
*it was at this moment he knew he f-ed up*
I-I have VERMINTIDE!!!
I used to have rats as a child. Now at 78 I have a cockatiel; I'm already trying your training on him. It works!
I'm watching this to trick train my chinchilla! I had never thought to teach small animals tricks; it's great enrichment! first session went good and the man had fun ☺️
Very helpful for when I get my rats! Ty 💞
This video brings me great joy. :D
So they can learn multiple tricks and not get confused?
For sure! In fact, I teach Paw, Come, Backup, and Spin all within the first session! Thats maybe 5 minutes of work to get 4 different "tricks" on cue, and to set up good foundations for continued training.
Its like when your training a puppy - drill one trick too much and they get bored. Teach multiple tricks each sessions and soon you'll have a dog that loves training and learns quickly!
Yes i have a rat
Rats are smart and in some cases, have been proven to be smarter than mice. Impressive for a rodent.
Joah Got Jams believe it or not rats are really intelligent. They can even work out simple maths in their minds. :))
Joah Got Jams yes they can they are very intelligent learning tricks for them is like learning math for us. You can remember multiple math problems and not get confused they can learn multiple tricks without getting confused my rats know, come, and paw and they never get confused
I don’t even have a rat, but this is still the cutest thing I’ve seen all week, I love it
Thank you Shadow the Rat for the awesome and entertaining tutorial. I am following your lead and teaching my two ratties your tricks. I love rats. And because of channels like this one, I LOVE TH-cam!
this is so amazing, only convinced my parents even more to get me some rats
Amazing! Thank you! Your rats are so cute!
Loki: I have am army.
You: ts ts.
Lmao got slapped by my father for laughing in the middle of night
Solar your profile picture says a lot about this comment lmao
This is unintentionally hilarious hahaha. I found it really funny when they're backing up hahaha, so cuuute!
Very helpful, new to raising these wonderful pets and I'm hooked for life already🙂
Melhor vídeo de ratos que já vi!!!! 😂😍😍
I have four rats too. I very love them 😁😍❤️
I have TWW II, I have as many rats as I bloody wants, and I conquer entire nations with them!
I honestly feel like uncommon pets are the easiest to train. My goose picked up the come trick within two days.
So true, I think people often underestimate other animals since they aren’t trained as much but they are very capable of learning and often adore it!
Same w other rodents and snakes ppl say their mindless but they’re so much smarter/deeper than ppl think. Rats are demonized by people too I think they are cool animals I’d keep one but I have a boa so they’d just be on edge bc they smell each other. Rats are very high maintenance tho any rodent in general is but so can snakes tbh.
People assume that any animal that isn't a dog isn't trainable. Lots of animals are trainable, it's very impressive.
Thank you for making this, very well made!
When you started getting them to come and the all just ran at you like they were soooo excited just broke me and I LOVE IT SO MUCH THEY ARE SO CUTE
My old rats learnt these better than my dog learned how to sit 😂
What treat do you give them? and where can you buy it? I want to teach my rats tricks but it’s hard finding a good treat
I just feed plain Cheerios broken into 2-4 pieces each most of the time. Gerber puffs make another good treat, again I break these into 2-4 pieces and feed each small piece as an individual reward. Both are available at just about any store as well, and each Gerber puff container lasts a week or so with all 4 girls training daily (I'll admit, I snack on the puffs as well - they taste really good!)
Otherwise, just about anything you or I can eat works. My girls are super food driven, and will work for something as tasteless as wafer paper to something as amazing as a bit of banana (their favorite fruit). If your having trouble with certain tricks, meat baby food is great at giving some extra motivation. I sometimes use it when training the initial few tricks, as it motivates the rats like no other food and ensures that they stay by me while eating it (if they run off after every trick to stash/eat their food, they'll learn at a MUCH slower pace).
Shadow The Rat thank you so much that really helps I have 6 boys it’s so cute watching them learn tricks I’m gonna start as soon as possible
Brianna Espinoza same. And when I speed he runs off
@@ShadowTheRat what do you have on your finger for them to lick as a treat?
Please don't give them those store treats on a daily basis. They are sugary and not natural or good for the rats health.
OMG THE FETCH WAS SO DAMN CUTE! I kinda want a pet rat now
Btw, rat owners, I reccomend using a pouch of Ella's kitchen as a nice treat for your rats, it has a dash of lemon juice but that doesn't affect them so its ok, but i tried with my rats and they loved it! Ty for the upload btw Shadow, your rats are adorable and clever!
I never knew how much I needed to see rats playing basketball in my life until now
Today I’m getting my rats and I’m going to tech my rats most of your amazing and adorable tricks! Thank u ☺️
Lol when you made the "come" noise both my mice came to me.😅
I have two big boys and they both knows some tricks (spin, come, jump into a circle, jump on something etc.), they are awesome rats (pet ?), the problem is they are really really impatient about food, it's really hard to train them at something that last more than 1 sec to execute, otherwise they just jump on me to get the treat , ignoring the trick anyway :D They are almost 2 years old so I just let down on hard tricks :) Always good to watch your videos, it's really fun when you call them when they are distracted :D (PS : what is the treat that looks like ''paper'' you give to your rats ? seems a good idea if it's low on carbs and calories. PS 2: If you want some idea, I did learn a trick to my rats : I gently blow air (really gently, they can still feel it even if don't move my lips) at them and they do the trick (spin), people usually don't understand how I did this, or start thinking if I actually can do telepathy with my rats :D
Nit wafer paper
Nit I have 6 girls and they know up, come, paw, and kiss we just use their names for them to come to us they love to play games and are very sweet one of them is blind and deaf but still knows tricks she can feel like the different vibrations to when we speak so she knows what vibration is her name, up, paw, and kiss she is very intelligent but is very shy and in my house there is only two people who she is fine with them touching her me and my sister I live with 9 people in my house and have 19 pets
My mouses too
That’s so cool how u had the patience to tech them so many tricks
My friend: u have no talent.
Me:calls rats*
Me: imma end this whole girls life .
Good-good, now give them-them armors and hallberds and say : "STORMVERMIN, ATTEND ME-ME!!!"
Awesome 😍 Thank you! We have learned the “spin” command, now I hope to teach the rats to give a paw.🐀
So cute. Seeing them all come. Great work and thanks
Amazing! ❤😂
Thanks! :)
Sadly i can only get mice, not rats, but that doesn't mean i won't still try! I'll keep ya updated!
How is it going? I'm getting mice soon, and will definitely be doing these! 😂
@@mikaelaline9182 I haven't gotten them yet :(
Well... i was meant to get mice but somehow got rats? XD
Mikaela Line have you done these?
I love your videos. I watch them all, you are very talented.
This gives me life, you’re such a wonderful rat trainer!
I'll hire-engage her to train my clanrats, Yes-yes!
I have to say that, this tutorial is so good. My rat learned 2 of the tricks with just 10-15 minutes. I dont even need to use my second hand for show her the price.
I want a rat (earned a sub)
ALWAYS GET RATS IN GROUPS
Shaun AGTR i got a rat by itself, she’s doing good and almost 2 yeas
suck a nut it doesn't matter how old your rat lives too it's about how happy they are humans simply can't replace a rats company and that's why they need a partner if you look forward to getting rats in the future make sure you get 2 or more they are also pack animals that's why they need company the only reason a rat should be put alone is if it's abnormally aggressive
Yes get 2 or more
I’ve got a trio as my first lot of rats craziest girls I’ve ever seen
I REALLY want a rat! I don't know if I can get one right now, because if the Corona Virus shuts down the stores, and doesn't allow us to leave our homes..
hey! did you get a rat yet? you should get two if you haven't looked into owning rats and if you still want to get them :D
Please do your research, rats are social animals and must have friends + never get your rats at stores.
Please, please, please be responsible and research before you get animals.
@@youdroppedsomething4334 yessss!! I was going to comment the exact same thing but... you said it for me!!
Mean while my mom is like we have a RAT in home😅
Don't get one from a place like petvalu- instead your local humane society might have some. Otherwise, there are usually local breeders around. Make sure to get more than one, they need other rats or they can get issues. Good luck with rat finding!
My parents would never let me get a rat but I’m watching this as a “what if”
I got rats today
@@corafitzsimmons7963 aww congrats! 🥺
The things I find when trying to research for a throwaway line in my writing. XD Your rats are all super cute and they do their tricks so well!!
I have watched so many of your videos and they have all been so helpful with my experience with my first rats. Thank you so much!
Hey! What kind of sweet do you use for the training?
Leonie W cheerios or drops of yogurt on your finger tips work great
@Nevaeh Hyson Cheerios are good but I’m not sure about the yogurt
i feel like you don't even have to go out of your way to train rats to come. all i have to do is crinkle a plastic bag and they come running because they think its food 😂
THIS IS SO CUTE!! Now I only have to convince my mom to get a mouse
Its a rat but ok

*chonky rat running intensifies*
This works with mice to? And what would be the best trick to teach a mouse first? Come?
I think spin is the easiest. If not, its with the hoop. But If you trained your mouse well (They know there name, they know you etc.) you can try ‘come’
Rats are quite different to mice, rats jump high and are more likely to remember everything, mice are good too but I am note sure if they coke under the same circumstances, they are different animals but u can give it a go i guess
Nice and rats are very different , mice probably wouldn’t want to sit down with you and learn a trick. I honestly don’t even know if they can learn these tricks 🤔
All of these tricks blew my mind! All of these amazing tricks look so good! 💖
Very good video. Made me smile a lot. I've always known that rats are intelligent and this just proves it. Well done.
I'm going to teach all of my rats these this is going to be hard to do because I have 15 rats😅😨😵😓
I know this is old but I have 58 rats
I have two. TWO.
I used to have three when I was young.. loyal they were and brave enough to befriend my two cats
Aga Siepracka damn, are you a breeder? Or do you just really love rats and live in a mansion like wow, how can you fit so many cages in one house?
Have a bit of an issue, they learned the "food call" before me and now will come int the cage from behind the fridge three rooms away, if I rustle a shopping bag. They know, that the food is in the cage, and know rustling of bags means food.
Best pet growing up was my rat boy. Big balls that scared my mother lol but she got use to my baby boy. Best little guy ever
I have a problem. I have a young rat that won't take any treat from me unless I put it in front of her. Normally that doesn't work and I have tried different ways and she still won't take anything from me. Do you know anything that I could do to be able to start training my rat?
If she's not living with a friend, introducing her to a confident rat (or any rat really) will help more than anything. Rats learn best by example, and part of what helps me be able to start training and interacting with even skittish unsocialized rats right away is that their cagemates give them confidence and show them that they can trust me.
Other than that, try feeding liquid treats. Something like meat baby food on a metal spoon will teach her to lap it up, and after that you can offer it off your hands or fingers. This really helps with gaining trust in my experience, as the meat baby food is very motivating to rats, and since it's a liquid they're forced to sit next to you while consuming it (which helps form a positive association with your hands).
With real skittish rats, you really want to build some trust before you start requiring them to do things for treats. With my skittish girl Cream, I was able to train her before gaining too much trust simply because my older girls hung around and showed trust in me. Until she was hand tame though, she had to be trained near the more confident rats, or she would just be too nervous to train. Many touch desensitization and counter-conditioning session later, and now she can train alone. But we really had to build up a rappor of trust before she felt comfortable working alone with me.
Anyway, good luck training! :)
Thanks for the advice!
bond her with another rattie and try to bond with her yourself! I have a few tips I can give you if you'd like?
Frances Beckemeyer my first did the same. As they get more used to you they will take. My new one Xena, got her 3 days ago. She won't eat from my hand.
I have two dogs, a year apart in age; elder very food driven/easy to train; the other was not food driven and had to learn to be. 'Peer pressure' worked -- if big brother was getting a treat/training, she started to want to. Training is easier when they care about food. Although some might be more toy driven; my non-food one was very squeaky-ball driven. Gotta find their value-treat (food, or toy).
Thank you so much!!! This was such a fun activity with my rats and I was surprised that even my shy one got really into it!
Oh god i cant wait to get rats! This makes me so happy- i have mice right now but oh my god!! im in love! I've already taught one "Twist" (spin) and im so excited to see if he learns the rest!
I can’t do paw my rat is to connected with giving kisses
Hey Shadow I have a quick question. I am trying to teach spin on cue but the rats don’t bother even following the food. Please help me!!!
The Rat Crusader maybe try a different treat
My two boys had the same issue. What I did is make sure to hold the treat firmly so a piece wouldn’t break off ( I use Cheerios) and I let them grab on to it and then I spin them around like that. Do it over and over until they do it without gabbing the treat.
And if that doesn’t work, then as Uh Eh said, try to use a different kind of treat. What kind of treats did you try. I recommend yogurt drops, rats go ape shit over those.
Thanks for the tips guys my leraned how do it now
help me to
is there a recommended age to start training
Not really, so long as they are able and food motivated, they can learn (the youngest I've trained a rat is at 5 weeks old, the oldest rat I trained was over 2.5 years old).
ok thanks, just wanted to know as my rats are 7 1/2 weeks old
josiah kiddle hell to the no
Really cool and clear direction easy and helpful tips for the trainer!
oh my god how cute. it's unbelievably great what your little animals have learned there. I am very happy that people are so good to these small, intelligent and loving animals. Greetings from Germany
Are rats capable of learning words? Like for example if I taught it that “up up up” means to jump up onto my hand, would it understand? (I say this to my cats lol)
Our rats definitely know the word "Treat", so I'd say yes! We just adopted them from a breeder, and they must have taught them it because they came knowing it :-)
After all, words are just different "sounds" we make. Sure, they are more complex, but rats are intellgent.
My rats were clicker trained but will also come if I say it as well as they understand the word treat
kiss noises
