  • The Nintendo 64 is one of the iconic gaming consoles of the late 90s, with a small but excellent library of games. Several mods exist for improving the video quality of the N64, but Gamebox Systems 64HD provides a direct HDMI connection on the 64 for an affordable price. RIP Postman. I still can't get over how one week he was tweeting about how well his job interview was going, the next week I'm reading that he passed away. An absolute shame. :(

    Such sad news, Rest in Peace Postman. Not sure if this is open sourced or not, but if it is, i would love to see his work finished off, a tribute version that supports 1080p along with some bug fixes and refinements.

      Right now it is not open source, but maybe that will happen in the coming months. He was a really awesome guy and I appreciate all of his contributions

      Thanks so much for watching the video and Aaron was an amazing person to know. I only interacted with him briefly, but he was always very helpful, talented and supportive. I’m wishing you and your family all the best during this difficult time.

    I put one of these in when they first launched. I had issues updating the firmware and Postman took the time to help me through discord. He will be missed.

    Another great video man I've been looking to get an HD mod for an N64 and that looks like a pretty good one simple straight and forward. And that clear red N64 is spectacular great work😮

      If you're gonna just send out digital signal (no upscale) and use external upscaler this is probably a fine option, but if you want HDMI right out to your TV I can't imagine anyone would want to be limited to 720P and certainly no one is using interlaced video either. 720P looks bad on a 1080 set let alone 4K TV's which are pretty common? Yeah options are great, but unless you are on a really tight budget you'd probably be better off with the Retro Gem or N64digital or whatever (as off-putting as PixelFx's recent stuff has been...)

    That is my N64! I appreciate how you were able to fit me in last minute to get this mod done just before the website closed down to get caught up with mod work. I was on the fence about having it done to my stock N64, so I bought one that was in great shape electronically but a bit rough cosmetically. I took it apart and cleaned it the best I could and decided to replace the original, beat up shell with a new, 3rd party red one, along with a region free cartridge slot. I also added repro labels to go along with it, Thanks again for the great work!

    I don’t have the exp or nerve to solder small points. I do have a Grape N64 w/UltraHDMI and it produces a fantastic picture. Glad to see there’s more HDMI options. Awesome hearing your explanation of the different screw locations, great work!

    Hah did this mod a couple of months ago. Wish my technique was as good as yours. I used a chizzel tip and tried preping solder first on the flex and lightly pushing it in place with flex. I still ended up with a lot of bridging and not so clean joints. Got it working at least. I don't know why I have so much trouble with those flex cables.

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Really glad to hear you got it working. The flex cables are tough and it takes a good amount of practice

    3:05 - Yeah I dislodged a RAM chip once. Thankfully nothing was broken, it was easy to set back in place and solder back down. Kinda wild how there's only 4 pins on the one side of them.

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, it’s very easy to do this and I have also made the same mistake. But like you said, it’s not too bad to reattach it to the board.

    I've done this mod myself. Not as hard as I thought. Have you heard about the n64 hdmi kit from aliexpress? Hispeedido if I remember right. The installation process is very similar to this one. Outputs 720p, but the scaling options aren't that great and the audio doesn't sound as good. Anyway, great video.

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have heard about that mod but I have not had a chance to try it yet. My concern is that the scaling wouldn’t be that great and the overall quality may not be that good

  • @Angel-mt8eg
    @Angel-mt8eg 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Bought this kit a few days ago and got it up and running last night. Unfortunately I don't get any audio when connected via HDMI -- Composite works fine, though. Is this a known issue with the 64HD? The TV is a Samsung S95C.

    • @chasen432
      @chasen432 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you ever get it working? Thinking about buying a N64 with the GameBox 64hd hdmi mod installed and hooking it up to my Sony A90j.

    • @Angel-mt8eg
      @Angel-mt8eg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @chasen432 It works just fine, both audio and video, on my older Q7CN, but I never got the audio working on my S95C. It's a known compatibility issue that perhaps could be addressed through a software update on the 64HD, but I haven't gotten around to it or seeing if it's been solved. I'd recommend checking to see if anyone's had issues with your particular TV model (I didn't see any mentioning Sony TVs, only some Samsung and LG ones). If not, then go for it.

    Hey George. I just needed to reach out to you. So I spoke to Dan from PixelFX. He said the GEM MOD for PS2 Slim's don't need the disc lid stopper. He uses the hole that is drilled into PS2s but some Slims don't have this little hole, it's not that important as long as we the customer don't open the lid further than it's supposed to go. I have a silver slim I'm sending you (hopefully for you to make a video here) and it doesn't have the hole and I would like to NOT have anything drilled into my console. Maybe I'll include a note in the box for you letting you know it's me. But that stopper is truly not needed.
