The dvd you 3 have produced is amazing! I purchased one from Billy- I can’t believe how this knowledge transforms what was considered lesser quality wood into hunting material- thank you and keep up the great work

I had always felt that the Indians (my father is an Elder, the Fire Keep) had better ways of preparing bow woods for their best performance possible. I had thought that fire hardening had something to do with it. To see that these other woods can be made to perform like they can is very encouraging. It also means that you don't have to have osage to make a great hunting bow. So this means a lot of local woods that we thought were inferior can be made to a higher level of performance. To me, it also explains more how our ancestors were able to make their short bows so dependable. Their very lives depended on their bows and what they could do with them. To see proof with some of the woods that you have shown is enlightening for sure. While I already have several Osage staves that are in the works, I can see expanding to these other woods to try knowing that they can be a solid dependable shooter and hunting weapon. Appriciate you guys

Thanks and you hit the nail on the head. I like fire hardened better than osage now after making and shooting wood bows for 30 years this was a breath of fresh air to me also. I live in coastal Georgia and we do not have osage. I had wondered how the native people could have the great bows of history with damp white wood bows. But Keith rediscovered this technique during experiments removing wood with fire. My grandfathers race is native american, Cheraw/PeeDee and proven with DNA and I was happy to help prove what was written in the old records by early first contact europeans. We proved what they saw and wrote down. Keith was the leader and brains behind this but i was glad to help. Here the bows of native history were commonly very long.

@@BeckumOutdoors pretty awesome. I am of Western Cherokee, my dad has our family tree going way back before the civil war. My grandfather hid his background as did his father to be able to own land and work. I favor my mother who has little Indian in her but you can sure see it in my sister and father. I agree that so many Native Americans did not have access to Osage and yet did very very well with the woods that they used. So they had to have this all figured out. So much has been lost but some are holding on here and there. Heck, you had me out looking at a Dogwood tree for a bow. I will probably just cut anpther hickory since they are everywhere here. have considered Elm as well but didn't want to put the work into it to be a lousy bow. Thanks, Jerry

sorry to keep bothering you, last comment. watched your video where you fertilized the water oak. have done this and it works. also did this for cerain honey suckle patches and the deer notice even quicker. they will walk thru other patches to get to it. my grandfather always told me that even though we couldn't tell the difference, the deer sure could. He made crossbows with cedar for the limbs for me as a kid. being over in western Ark next to OK, he told me of his ancesters using osage for bows. Have a little Chickasaw in me as well. tried knapping flint but my eyes aren't so good nor is the feeling in my right hand. wanted to make heads for my river cane arrows. hard not to talk about this stuff.

This process works better on white woods that are weaker in belly compression but have very strong backs.

I did see some heat treated bellies in the DVD sneak peak and can’t wait to see some examples and testing. Just one question, what is the draw weight of that fully bending “D” bow you made using stone tools and put on the tiller tree? I love that design. Thanks bud. All the best,

The heat treat is not typical. The video will explain. We will have a download also. The bow I made with stone tools is 48 pounds. Thanks for your support.

the difference between osage bows and white wood bows is long life/ and consistent performance over a long period of time. the wood must be cured properly and fashioned according to prescribed methods learned over time. white woods can make good bows but not long lasting bows. a few years of regular use and the tell tails signs of the inferiority of white woods compared to osage will become evident. i stopped using white woods many, many years ago when the evidence first was revealed through experience. i have made hundreds and hundreds of osage orange bows and white wood bows of all kinds as well as yew bows, and horn bows. osage is also the best wood i have used for the core of a horn bow. yew also is inferior to osage though very good. long experience has been my teacher. you can't judge a bow wood by one thing, the initial performance of the bow is not all there is to it, but is for most people who have only a few years of experiance. a life time of experience has confirmed to me, at least, that osage is definately beyond any white wood.
