ABOUT THE OPERA
Modern psychology made its first appearance on the opera stage with Richard Strauss’ masterpiece Salome. It is a short yet extremely powerful work; an inescapable lava flow of religion, sex and violence.
The central character in Salome is the spoilt princess of Judea, who demands the head of John the Baptist if she cannot gain his love.

Ik ben 'gewend' aan de uitvoering met Montserrat Caballé en Erich Leinsdorff. Maar geef mij Malin Byström maar. Ik heb spijt dat ik niet naar de Stopera geweest ben om het met eigen ogen te aanschouwen.
Es penoso que el grandísimo esfuerzo que hacen estos cantantes y músicos con un resultado tan excelente resulte repulsivo por el monstruito de Johansson....

Musically, on the slow side and too careful. In a few years, though, Malin Byström should give us the best Salome since Ljuba Welitsch. Byström's sound is especially beautiful here. Most sopranos have to shriek their way through the final aria. But what's with the staging of people just kin of hanging around behind and beside Salome looking as if they were waiting for stage directions? And the slasher-movie dead body instead of a head really isn't doing much except drawing attention to itself. Bathing in blood might be a novel idea, but that's all it is. The only reason I'm being critical is the potential for a great "Salome" is here.

What a shame such a vocally wonderful Salome has to endure one of those God awful directorial wank productions that bastardises every original concept of what the opera was all about.
