There's also the Disney bible that all animators read called The Illusion of Life and also Before Ever After. Great insight into animation and how Disney also pushed so many boundaries.
!!I just can't get over how great your content is. These books are great and there were some I've never heard of. Thank you so much. You are really helping the animation community.
Ill need to teach myself everything about character animation. As my college I got accepted in only covers the basic works of animation programs (Both 2D and 3D). So I can do moving logos and add effects using adobe after effects. Its a rather broad 4 years of learning all kinds of cool stuff. So I dont mind having to learn the tricky craft of character animation. But yea because I need to teach this to myself, I can use every little helping hand like professionals on here that lovingly teach the ways of character animation. And ofcourse books. Why im not going to a college which will teach character animation? Well, simply put.. my brain is lazy. It sucks at taking in and properly understanding information. Focusing for too long will fry my brain leaving it unable to concentrate and take in anything until I sleep. Ill start to stutter and literally get distracted every second. Making it INSANELY hard to keep up with homework. And all the colleges that give these character animation courses seem to be too hard on my wee little brain. Got turned down many times... Once almost crushing every ounce of hope I had. Yet im still here. Im just really thankfull for my positivity and hope. And the never ending support and hope of my family and friends. Without that I would have probably given up and slipped into depression. Animation is my everything. ANYWAYS thanks for this! Imma find out the best books for me and order them. And Ill become a well respected and talented animator, bringing wonder and joy to the world
my personal list : Preston Blair's Cartoon animation, The Animator Survival Kit, Elemental Magic, Don Bluth's How to Storyboard, Disney's Layout & Background and Timing for Animation ( bachelor & halas )
@@abrahemsamander3967 One of the very best animation manual I've ever read is from a director named Borijov Dovnicovic, I don't know if the book has an english translation but the purpose of this book is all about dealing with low budgets without compromising the final quality and it has some informations I never read in other books. The french title is something like " the technique of animation ". Very simple illustrations but a real gemme.
Madjid. Awesome! Will check out. Budget is a big thing, a big reason the quality of animation fails is cause of poor budget, so learning to deal with that would be a great skill. I can find a scan online maybe.
Took 2 Days to read all of "Framed Ink" but was worth it. Heading to the next one now. Can you guys recommend some more interesting books for the beginners?
I know this videos old but one thing I've been trying to do with my my drawings is capture the flow of water and the energy of fire which is really difficult to do in a drawing but I feel that I'm getting much better than when I started using a waterfall I live close to as reference
Can someone recommend either me reading all of Animators Survival Kit at once or slowly read it while experimenting? I was taking it slowly and getting a bit bored with the start of the book and I definitely don't want to give up on learning
Do you have any suggestions for books to learn about title animations? My main use case is to make educational TH-cam videos. I want to be able to add gripping text effects to my videos. I am looking for something that will help me there. Thanks for the video!
oky, thank you, i wanna ask you also, about drawing and coloring backgrounds "books" , like the style of "ghibli" studio , do you have any idea, or books or web site ?? & thank u again :D
Thank you) I wonder, is there smth especially for cg animation? I mean, surely u gotta know the basics and the principles but I would love to find some books about Adobe Animate, Harmony and all that - just about using the software
I have that framed ink book because it’s good for comic artist as well but it’s cool cause I’m getting in to animation as well my human figure and anatomy studies have been good
hey Howard its Kofi from the meet up. this was an awesome video. thanks for the references. are u an avid reader or these used as reference point as u work through an animation
Hey dude! It was great to see you at the meet up! I seem to spend most of my time making animations and not reading about how to do it, but I treasure these books and here are some of the reasons. 1- They look very impressive 2- They are fun to share around with friends 3- They give me a boost of inspiration when I need it 4- They keep me humble. When I read them I am fully aware of how many great artists there are who have already been where I am 5- I learn new things from them which I am able to apply to my animations. Especially with Dream Worlds and Framed Ink! Let me know if you are still interested in collaborating too!
I have a question. Isn't composition in western animation very different from composition in eastern animation (Anime)? I feel that the styles are very different.
there are so many diverse animations in both areas, its hard to make a sweeping comparison like that. But yeah I guess there are certain popular styles of storyboarding in the east which are different from western
You know, I'm trying to save up for a Cintiq 13HD but with all these books you've shown....how am I suppose to do this? :') Amazing recomendations! How come you don't have the Illusion of life tho?
ah yes a 13HD is a good investment! These books are kinda like my guilty pleasure which I spend way too much money on haha For some reason I never got round to buying a copy of the illusion of life, although I have read through it at the library. I like how it boils down what you need to know about animation into very simple principles
Howard Wimshurst I'd really love to have it to finally draw and see the screen at the same time, it'd probably help a lot. And I completely understand on guilty pleasure books ahahah
I learned how to animate from TH-camrs like you.
nice one! here's to self-teaching
