To me this song has always sounded like an army lamenting that this weapon, the Red October, had to be used, because of the unthinkable carnage it would bring in its wake. Like a funeral hymn for the ones about to die from its assault, because once that firepower is unleashed, there's no stopping or escaping from it. I know that's not even remotely what the song is about, but that haunting vibe is what I've always gotten from the song. It's so ominous and intimidating, and easily one of my favorite film scores of all time.

There is a nugget of truth, yeah, but it is still a hymn, and very powerfull. As a native speaker, I really like it, even though some words sound a bit unnatural, and accent is very much present. Nevertheless, I really love this song.

Actually, when I think about it, the lyrics are pretty brilliant.
When you first watch the movie, you immediately assume that it is a hymn to the Red October Revolution.
"Sail fearlessly, pride of the northern seas, the hope of the revolution"
"Praise be to our fathers and grandfathers, ever faithful to their convictions, for giving us a new world"
But then, you watch the movie, and realize that almost everyone on board joined the crew in order to defect... Suddenly, the song can take on an entirely new meaning.

My tribute to Basil Poledouris: He sure knew how to do stoic dignity and tragic heroism, blending epic-ness with tenderness, utilizing all the tools at his disposal. A master craftsman for cinematic orchestral music, in any movie genre. He elevated the material to another level, as any good composer does. Four of his scores where he does this stand-out for me: Robocop (sci-fi), Hunt for Red October (military), Conan the Barbarian (fantasy) and Lonesome Dove (western). Remove these compositions and replace them with a generic score and you literally lose half the heart and soul of the film, a real sign of a great cinematic scoring. In my opinion, he ranks right up there with the other greats of the 80s/90s film composers.

How could I know that you would die?
      Farewell again, our dear land.
So hard for us to imagine that it's real, and not a dream.
      Motherland, native home,
      Farewell, our Motherland.
Let's go; the sea is waiting for us.
The vastness of the sea is calling to us, and the tides!
Hail to our fathers and forefathers.
We are faithful to the covenant made with the past.
      Now nothing can stop
      Our Motherland's victorious march.
      Sail on fearlessly,
      Pride of the Northern Seas.
Hope of the Revolution, you are the burst of faith of the people.
the last two stanzas repeat a couple of times, then...
      In October, in October,
We report our victories to you, our Revolution.

BUT that intro got me. i guess if you have no opinion of anything ( at least at my age. or how i grew up...i don´t know ) but despite how "naive" i may have been,...this intro, this "masterpiece" ( if i may call it so ) is one of the best among the best since mankind is making this kind of cool stuff.

I was 10 or 11 when I first saw this movie and knew how different it was from the book because I was reading it at the time. The summer between the 5th and 6th grade was when my parent started letting me read "adult" books. I read "The Hunt For Red October" because of the movie and "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" because of the cover blurb.
Now I'm 42 years old and wondering if the Ultimate Question involves Soviet submarines.

So i had a feeling that i alredy knew that song when i first saw the movie yesterday. I got surprised it isn't a soviet song but simply a soundtrack for the movie.
Poledouris could put the soviet feeling of songs like Varshavianka (i know it is a socialist polish song from the 19th century but it still remembered as a soviet song), Shli Soldaty, or Poliushko Polie; very well done.
