Dear Victor. Here prof. Roberto Sion, Sao Paulo, Brasil. I want deeply thank you for magnificent class about Jazz Rhythm Section. I take care of a youth Big Band like yours and this lesson definitely will clear up many the concepts I try to teach. Your vídeo will be the very homework for the p, b, d ( we do not have guitar, for the moment) on this days of retirement! God bless you all. Lets stay in contact. Jazzy Hugs, maestro Roberto Sion.

Great sounding young band. All players beyond their years...but you can still hear their immaturity with regards to time -- particularly during the shuffle demo. Bassist and particularly the pianist were pushing it. I only bring this up because the point of Mr. Houghton's video here is TIME.

l was at a drum clinic last week and Mr. Houghton's book on chart reading was highly recommended. Especially if you want to become an indemand session drummer or to read charts like a pro! I could not find at my local library so I purchased a copy and it will be here in a couple days.

Think of it as good but not exactly where we're going. It could become problematic if a person were to play like that continuously, especially covering up and playing over people while comping. It's like a conversation. It needs to flow naturally.

but wait aren't the piano and the guitar not aloud to comp together at the same time?

Yes and no - Guitar and piano playing the same part is like a tuba and a barritone horn playing the same part in that it works but its not as intetesting as we might like. typically there will be a comp and a counter comp, similar to the concept of melody and countermelody. A counter comp uses the same chord as the comp but the rhythm of the counter comp typically will fall on the rests of the comp. Example: in Millers in the room, the trumpets have a comp rhythm and the low brass has the counter comp with the saxophones having principle melody.
