    Looks like a good successful air layer, but those roots are still very fragile. They can be planted just fine with the moss still attached.

      It's still alive but growth is slow, I started to remove the moss when four of my Japanese maple layers died a few months after potting them up. I've had no problems after removing the moss.

    Hi Chip, what variety is your Shimpaku; Itoigawa or Kishu ? If your air layered Shimpaku is for sale, would like to buy some.

    I heard to air layer a juniper you need foliage below the layer. Have you found this to be a necessity?

    • @chipdouglas7117
      @chipdouglas7117  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have done a few layers on branches close to soil level with no foliage below and they were fine. That is a good idea though because the healthier the branch the better the chance the layer will be successful.

    About air layering juniper must i use a sphagnum moss or it will work with soil too? Should I use rootnig powder? Thank you for the nice chanel!

    • @leoricardo5743

      Hi, Sphagnum moss in not essential. I have read in many books and seen in youtube much success with potting compost. Anything will work is if it the right dampness inside.
      Sphagnum moss is popular and it has lots of air space for roots. You will be fine with potting compost.
      Rooting powder should help in theory. Many people say they dont seen any extra benefit from it.
      I think you should try with what is available!
      Happy Gardening, Leo

    Excellent successful air layering! I’m located in Virginia and I’m interested to know if I have a similar season. Could you tell me what part of the country your in? Thank You.

    Nicely done. Why did you have to clean all the moss? What if you left it there?

    • @chipdouglas7117
      @chipdouglas7117  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can leave it on there but I think it's better to remove asap so I can rearrange the roots and flatten them out in the new pot, also you can reuse the moss I have moss that has been through several air layers and is still going when it gets fine and powdery I mix in with soil.

    • @christofs-a1834
      @christofs-a1834 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may be wrong, but the moss won't break down. Also the roots of the plants don't like the air pockets created by the moss because the roots can dry out.

    Will it work in summer?

    • @chipdouglas7117
      @chipdouglas7117  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In summer put the air layer under a tree, under a bench or in a corner where it gets a couple of hours of morning sun and then shade for the hottest part of the day. You might have to wait until spring to remove it, by then it should have well developed roots and take off in it's own pot.

    What is the need of removing every strand of moss...it is bio degradable.....even there is no need of air layering of juniper....it is easily propagated through cutting......hopeless
