  • In this video, "Daiwa Silver Creek Glass Progressive 51LB-G - Field Testing - BFS Trout Fishing", Hobie-Wan Kenobi uses a variety of lures to test the casting capabilities of the Silver Creek Glass Progressive BFS rod and catches a few trout in a stream as well.

    My findings led me to want to use monofilament line instead of braided line. The rod is quite versatile but for small fish like brook trout, it would not be ideal for. There is a 48UL version that would be better suited for smaller fish.
    I also took the Daiwa Silver Creek Glass Progressive out on a lake to catch bass and bluegill. The rod can handle a wide variety of fish and was surprisingly sensitive. There was adequate power on the hookset and controlling fish was easy, yet enjoyable.
    The Daiwa Silver Creek Glass Progressive 51LB-G is a new BFS rod from Daiwa Japan. The Silver Creek Glass progressive has a taper fast enough to twitch minnow style lures and still have flex when a fish hits your lure, This versatile blank should be a great option for water that have a variety of sized fish.
    BLANK: Blank is made of 33% carbon and 67% ultra high density fiberglass. A mix of carbon and fiberglass for a rod blank is called composite. This composite material is supposed to combine the deep flex and smoothness of fiberglass and the lightweight, responsiveness and sensitivity of carbon. The action of the Silver Creek 51LB-G is faster than other fiberglass blanks but, still has a "progressive" deep taper as force is applied. This should increase accuracy and twitching of minnow style lures.
    GUIDES: Fuji Titanium SiC guides for a lightweight rod and smooth casting
    REEL SEAT: Daiwa used a traditional wood/metal reel seat for a contemporary look. Unlike most reel seats in this class, Daiwa used a modern tapered trigger to increase comfort and functionality of the reel seat.

    Great video (as always) dude! Might be kinda a weird question, but what do you typically have in your backpack when you're out wading? Just ordered myself that 3/1 Caperlan bag setup from Eurotackle to try out, hence my asking. Or even maybe a quick video on what you pack in general for a days trip out fishing and wading? I started fishing with the Smith Multiyouse TRMK-423UL, a nice fiberglass rod for stream fishing. Currently throwing lures with a Daiwa Silver Creek Air TW Stream Custom spooled with Varivas Twitch Master VLS Nylon line. You mentioned most people would prefer using braid on this kind of setup. I don't have much experience with braid lines. Could you please do a video on the pros and cons of the various lines used in BFS stream fishing sometime?

    Nice clip, factual honest critique ,informative and useful. It was really interesting for me as Im currently trying to source more sensitive BFS rod ,specifically for fishing small brownies (twitching minnows) in small streams. I’m using a carbon rod , great accuracy and contact however the fight lacks any excitement, which for me is of paramount importance.Do you know if there are other equivalent glass/ carbon rods out there on the market? .it’s hard to research as most of these seem to originate in Japan. I notice Daiwa have a ‘lighter’ model 46Ul-B …I’m wondering is this a better fit for the specifics for the small brownies I normally encounter on my local streams? Kind Regards… and keep these clips going …they are great…and I really look forward to viewing them …They have really kick started my enthusiasm for BFS style fishing.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are after smaller trout about 12in or less, I would get the 48UL. Although I never fished with it, I see it being perfect for that. I usually go after smaller trout too and this rod is a tad more powerful than I would prefer.
      Thank you for the kind words!

    • @stephenryan2296
      @stephenryan2296 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      FYI I ordered and just fished with the lighter 46UL-B and am extremely happy with its performance. Less stiffer than a full carbon but enough to retain contact and maintain accurate casting. Most importantly when I was fortunate enough to catch a brown trout or two the ‘fight’ experience was a lot better than on carbon …the rod bent nicely and I could really sense and experience every tug ,pull and resistance from the trout. Would like to have your knowledge regarding trout length rod choice. The silver creek glass progressive consist of 2 L model. The 4’6 and 5’1. May I ask basis same cast weight, how wide or deep a river decide the 4’6 or a 5’1. And do you have experience with the silver creek stream twitcher. I put a silver creek air tw on a stream twitcher 51LB and a glass progressive 51LB, to be honest the stream twitcher felt more balance and light at the front.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Stream Twitcher has more carbon in the rod, making it lighter and also losing the smooth fiberglass performance as well. I try to go with the longest rod possible (within reason). This gives you more of the blank tonight the fish and also you can manipulate your rod tip more to control your lure.

    I see you ultralight brook trout rods are extremely flexible and can manage tiny lightweight lures. Could this setup work to present a fishing fly to the trout at short to medium casting distances?

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely not this rod, it isn't light enough. Some of those UL BFS rods can cast "heavier" flies. Takes a capable reel as well

    By the way, do you prefer to match this rod with the silver creek air or a heavier metal round reel? At my local tackle shop. I put a millionaire sv tw and the silver creek on the rod. With the silver creek reel, the setup feels very lightweight and with the millionaire, although the setup is heavier but it felt balanced with the tip becoming very light. What’s your thought?

    It bothers me a bit that it doesnt handle the 3g lure well even though it is rated down to 2g. Have you done any more fishing with 3g lures on that rod? The video seems to only have shown a few cast (on 3g lure) with trouble casting each time. I like the rod and I throw 4g mostly, but I do have some that skirts in the 2.5-3g range so that's a concern. I also see that the silver creek has an "L" and "UL" rod versions so maybe the UL will handle it better as well.

    • @HobieWanKenobi
      @HobieWanKenobi  ปีที่แล้ว

      On a longer cast, 3gr minnows are good to cast. The issue is on shorter casts. I do want to try the UL version but, I don't want to add even more redundancy to my lineup 😂.
