I like that BGS offers the sub grades. It helps out like a roadmap to understanding the logic in the grade. They also grade tougher...the BGS 10 is always better than a psa grade. Nice in hand comparison says it all.
They should add a unique QR code that you can scan and it pulls up that card on their website. This would require a lil more work and expand their database. But could help secure the integrity of their slabs. Just an idea

Hi Dusty, great video. I'll add to the fact that I purchased 2 cards that had fake slabs. They were purchased at PWCC. Where there's smoke, there's fire. These cards were purchased possibly 5-10 years ago. One was a BVG Doug Wilson RC (BGS 9), and one was a Rod Langway RC (BGS 9)...the serial numbers never matched up; but back then, people just assumed that they were legit. No tampering evident (back then anyways)...PEOPLE BE CAREFUL!
I am with you. I AM 68 YEARS OLD and always trusted BGS. I always check my graded cards with the ser # on there site. Most of my graded BGS cards are 20 yrs old. Thanks for the info.
I am one of those collectors who preferred BGS over all other third party graders in the past (20 years ago). The main reason being that BGS published their grading standards and reflected the assigned grades within the report card. BGS explained the grades assigned as opposed to an unexplained grade assigned by PSA. PSA continues to utilize a detrimental grading practice known as "Eye Appeal" that leads to severe gradeflation. I have seen PSA-10 cards only score BGS-7. Why??? Yet, PSA continues to control the market while BGS gets disrespected. Dealers and collectors know that more than half of those PSA-10s would score less than BGS-9.5. At least that was the case 20 years ago, before I stopped collecting and was offered grading positions. PSA's sister company under Collector's Universe - PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and other coin grading services have been dealing with fake grading slabs for decades. They work with the U.S. Secret Service in tracking down the origins of the fake holders, mostly containing fake coins. Perhaps there needs to be an investigative group for such scams in this industry. Plus, the major grading services should share information on their holders with the other grading services in case fake slabs are submitted for crossover grading. I know a few prominent people within the grading services, so I will ask that question about sharing information.
As long as the scammer has access to the same serial numbers all they have to do is have the same card. Just slab it up and out the door. It's sold. There could be hundreds of Luka Doncic prizms that all have the same serial #. When you look it up on beckett it'll show it was graded. Crazy stuff man
Since I came back to the hobby in 2016 the security debate about BGS was already discussed by the community. They didn't fix the problem (no barcode, no QR, no hologram etc.) so no wonder that situation happened. That is why PSA is most famous and the slabs have more value. I don't see BGS closing the gap anytime soon.
@cvm gam I contacted them about the private bidding and they gave me some BS statement with eBay . the day they started doing private bidding is the same day everything started selling for more than it normally had been. EBay does not make it easy to report shill biding either. They tell you not to worry about it because they are already on top of it.
@cvm gam That bid history is already protected and you can only really use it for bid percentage with that seller plus the bidder feedback score. It's looks more like something you are trying to hide by making it private. Before 2010 you were able to contact other eBay buyers of things because they did not hide part of the user name. It was very beneficial when purchasing something because you could ask someone that already had bought one how they liked it. EBay has gone down since I first signed up with them.
I prefer BGS over PSA. I stopped buying PSA 10s after receiving so many so called 10s with white corner dings, off center, etc. I don't understand why PSA is more popular
Hey Dustin - With so much money being spent on the hobby it's no surprise that counterfeit slabs are out there. Buying graded cards has been one way to legitimize your investment! Now we all must be a little more focused when buying graded cards. Let's hope this gets figured out sooner than later. It only makes sense that the other companies have been hacked too. Great post here tonight - thanks for getting it out to us. Cheers - stay safe.
BGS FOR LIFE its what most of us grew up supporting we need to stick behind Beckett. PSA needs to fix the fact that very expensive cards bounce off the hard bumpers in their cases and rub on the face of the card it actually eats away the edges of card. BECKETT IS A LEGEND PLEASE PLEASE SUPPORT IT PART OF MY CHILDHOOD
Hey Dustin have you heard about BGS slabs that don’t have any numbers on the bottom of the slab at all? It has one on the label but not at the bottom where the PAT numbering is. Are they just older slabs? Awesome video mate.
I'm wondering the same thing. All my BGS slabs with a PAT# on the bottom have the "." between the PAT and the number, so they appear to all be good. But a handful of my BGS slabs don't have any PAT# on the bottom at all. I'm hopefully going to assume that these are different type slabs that BGS was using at one point. At any rate, I'm going to be extra careful with what I buy....even if it's graded.
@@talon1976 yeah turns out they made different variations at different times. If my info is correct the PAT without the dots are fake. Most of the others are just different versions of the slabs Beckett put out over the years. Sold most of mine with no problems 👍
They really don't have to counterfeit the label. All they really have to counterfeit is the slab itself. What they do, if they already have the card graded, is break the card out of the case. Take the card and label out, then place a lesser quality card and that label in the counterfeit slab. Then send the original card back for another grading/slabbing. And start the process over again. A hologram (or any other special identifier) on the label won't matter if they do it that way. They need to do something with the slab it itself to make counterfeiting the slab harder and more expensive.
I believe there was a video on TH-cam about spotting fake BGS Slabs. I saw it back in November. Good info though. I kind of like BGS slabs more than the PSA...imo. Yes their slabs are more thicker then PSA. Seems BGS is more stricter when it comes to grading then PSA. And their the only company that be grading Star Basketball Cards. PSA don't be grading them because of counterfeiting concerns.
Most secure way is for the slabs to have a usb port that uses cryptography to authenticate it's a real slab (similar to how cryptocurrency wallets work). There is a large number (private key) in the usb that is hidden and a corresponding public key that everyone can see. To prove it's real, the buyer will send a random long number to the seller. The seller enters the number into the usb. The usb spits out a long number (answer) from the private key and sends it to the seller. The seller can determine if the answer came from the private key by using an algorithm based on the answer with the public key.

Yeah, it's just a sealed sleeve. How hard is that to replicate?
From looking at the counterfeits, it looks like they've already got that down.
Why don’t they code the card to match the slab?
That's a very good idea.
