I like the idea that Steven sent Gold out to mount silver with nothing but his pokemon, cursed to go and fight the champion (who Steven also freaked out enough to go there) and after some time becomes aware that he doomed Gold to become a puppet to the uwnon, something he can't stop even if he wanted to.
(I like that better than him just sending Gold straight into Lost silver)
