Ranging With the Raptors

  • Some scenes from this winter with the pigeons ranging far away to escape the hawks at home and getting attacked by the falcons from the mountains. One of the hardest years, with 2 falcons chasing the pigeons high in the sky and 2 hawks waiting for the escaped pigeons at home.
    Please view in Max quality / 4K.
    03:20 - Two hawks waiting for the pigeons to come home.
    05:00 - Flock not working well when feeding too much.
    06:40 - "Marathon" chase of the falcon; not the best video quality but it shows how long some of the falcon chases can be.
    07:56 - Crows chasing the hawk.
    09:10 - Falcon attacks at the ground level in very powerful wind.
    14:22 - Bad video quality but I wanted to post it because it shows the "obsession" of one of the falcons which did this technique several times: it splits 3 pigeons from the flock and chases them for a very long time while pushing them so high that you can't see them anymore. During this long chase it studies them and pushes their limits to the max.
    16:40 - Two hawks.

    Excellent work by both you and your birds. This is the true test for racing pigeons. I started with pigeons at the age of 8 I'm 75 now and still flying. The Falcon test far surpasses any race in my view. I will recommend you develop a smaller Falcon team and always fly them together. No more than twenty pigeons on the team. Flying more only hinders the teams' ability. Cheers man this is great to see someone else daring to fly against the Falcons. Cheers and blessings.

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Timothy. Thank you for your comment. I spend hours filming in the cold winter to select these few minutes clips. I am honoured and happy somebody your age and experience watches my videos. You are right, a smaller team moves always better, the smaller the better. My only problem is my obsession to breed many pigeons because I love "creating" new pigeons and curious on the phenotypes that appear. For this year I have 23 mature birds, the survivors from the previous winters and I will keep them separate in a section to fly them like this at least until January before uniting them with the youngsters. I also bred 70+ latebreds for this winter. I do not fly my club team in winter though, accidents can happen and they worked already too much in summer. From the winter survivor latebreds I keep the best 2-3 couples for next winters and for breeding and I move the others in the club team. Most fanciers do not think this way about the falcon test but I think that if the pigeons can't handle it at home in familiar territory and fully rested... what chances do they have in a race? They have to travel through hundreds of falcon and hawk territories in a long distance event. At home, the hawk is much worse than the falcon because it comes at the loft, and many of my losses happen when pigeons escape the falcon and dive in trees or gardens and hawks go after them. This selects the most calm birds, besides their required agility and speed. I'd love to know more about you and your pigeons and if you do something similar. Best regards, Andrei.

    What a show!!!! What a show!!! Positive proof that Racing Pigeons can outfly raptors. I used to have Birmingham Rollers and here in North Carolina there are plenty of raptors. I would rush home at lunch and let them up for exercise and when I got home after work there would almost always be one missing. But when I kept and Competed with Racing Homers; in 5 years of flying them I NEVER lost one to a Hawk. Racing Pigeons are the Kings of the sky. What a show!!! What a Show!! What city are you in? What camera gear are you using to get such great footage.

    Hi from the UK….what sort of falcons are they?…How many do you lose a year

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Hedley. Peregrine falcons and goshawks attack here. I don't lose pigeons at home during spring and summer, except some youngsters when they start ranging and get around falcons. The hawk attacks start by the beginning of autumn. 99% of the fanciers lock their birds after the young birds races end in October. Then the falcons also start to attack. I have a small team of old birds that I don't race at the club, I just keep them for winter flying at home, I can't stay 6 months without seeing birds in flight. Some late breds join these birds. I lose about 20-40 per winter. The best survive and they are spectacular birds, surviving hundreds of attacks.

      @@Pigeonmaniacom Lol, found your house with google maps :D it turns out the forest begins behind the house.. Not a very good place to release pigeons in terms of a predator

    Which brand of falcon is this one? we have peregrine ( katari ) falcon in Bengal, India. Too dangerous. Wish they perished en masse. 😠😠😠

      Peregrine falcon. The hawks are more destructive here because they get down to the loft. But all of the birds of prey have their role in nature and an extinction would be very bad even for the birds that are prey, including pigeons - suprapopulation, weak individuals breeding and uncontrolled diseases.
