Hi Andy, I really like this "overlaying the old with the new" format. Whilst I can see the need for modern warehouses and factories being warm and safe places for the workforce, they are rather soulless. I do seem to have an almost perverse yearning for the old filthy industrial premises of yesteryear!
Another great video Andy, just love thise old photographs. Like you I dont think I will live long enough to see it all opened up again in my life time. But all credit to those who battle on regardless with it, one piece at a time to see it through.
Wonderful.. I really enjoyed this episode Andy with the old photos and new combined please do more! Thanks for sharing the footage.. cheers from Missouri USA..
Hi Andy, brill video as usual! Your drone footage is absolutely great, you can see where the canal ran with a bit of thinking, and to see what it was like with the old photos is very enjoyable indeed! Take a look and Just think, most of all the surroundings were fields when they built this canal. Take care, see you soon.
@@lifeat2.3milesanhour57 it helps to show the carnage that has been ravaged and the difficulty of ever restoring it. But as we’ve seen withe the L&H not impossible.
It's a great video Mate! I so want to cruise the Lich Hatherton one day!! Like you though...i doubt it! I'm moored at lichfield cruising club at the other end.
How good was this video? Well Andy, you've made some brilliant videos but for my own personal tastes...this is the best you ever made! I'm getting dangerously close to 70 so I remember a lot of the older footage. The little bridge (Dog Bridge) just on the Cannock side of the marina. The bridge under the A4601 (Used to be the A460) at Wedges Mills. The lock keepers cottage by Walkmill Lane. I agree, I doubt we'll live long enough to see boats along that cut in our lifetime Andy :-( Sorry but I can only offer 10 out of 10 for this mate. Thank you.
There are still some blind spots in our collection of old pictures. Do you know of any old pictures of Dog bridge, or the section from Wedges Mill to Walkmill?
Mixing actual on the ground footige with flyby and now archive photos is great by me. Anything to enhance what's on / near the route must be 'a plus'. As an aside the major danger nowadays is that the canal system in or near towns is being taken over by liveaboards who no afinity for canal boating / walking and where CRT are not equiped to provide 'faclilties'....
Gad you liked it Harry - leading with drone footage was a bit of an experiment really. I know waht you mean about a lot of the city canals - thankfully Birmingham and the Black Country are not badly impacted.
Very interesting Vlog. The first stretch of canal I ever steered a narrowboat on was the Calf Heath end of the Hatherton Branch when the marina was the Calf heath Cruisers hire base on a trip from there to Llangollen & backin the 1980's
Hi love your work Andy. I would love to interviews, the memories and photos from the old timers that lived as youngsters in days past. That for me would bring the visuals to life.. keep up the great work.
I can see why you wouldn't want to fly that close to those power lines in that fog! I sure would love to have one or two of those abandoned wooden joeys!
The overlay is quite nice. I would add some present day close-ups of bridges, etc. that still exist. Shame that the branch sits idle. For most of it's length there is little to no obstruction to restoration other than that first "M" highway crossing.
It was a bit of a compromise to keep it down to 20 mins! My history version has a lot of photos of the dropped bridges. The issue is that as a branch it goes nowhere really, unless it finds a new route onto the BCN.
Nice one Andy; I had wondered if there was any remains of the old canal behind Finnings on the A5, now I know.
Yes - but very inaccessible. There is massive radio interference at that spot and the drone had to find its own way back to me.

Loads more character! I guess life moves on but wouldn't we all love to return to the world as it was in our teens, just for a day or two.
@@lifeat2.3milesanhour57 Oh yes, and to be armed with a 4K camcorder and DSLR as well.

Glad you liked it - I can see that the Lichfield side has more to offer and gets priority.
@@lifeat2.3milesanhour57 The posh end always gets the glory first eh.

yes, I do like the format, I think the combination of the fly past and the vintage photos helps tie a picture of the canal together
I m glad it worked ok - it was a bit of an experiment.
Wonderful.. I really enjoyed this episode Andy with the old photos and new combined please do more! Thanks for sharing the footage.. cheers from Missouri USA..
Glad it worked on your side of the pond Dennis. I want to continue up the hill you saw in the final shot, I just need some sunshine!

The section up Churchbridge Locks will call for a bit of imagination! Glad you enjoyed it.

I didnt realise that was your base. Looks like you get a new marina basin though.
@@lifeat2.3milesanhour57 indeed. Compensation moorings for the losses caused by HS2. You'll have to come and have a look at some point.
I've sent you some progress videos on messenger.
One day my fiend. One day! (Well, the Lichfield anyway.)
Drone plus archive works really well and puts the whole route into a very comprehensible context
Thanks Andrew - that seems to be the consensus view.
Superb, Love this format, takes you closer, and makes relating what is now, and what was then so much clearer, Thank You.
Glad you liked it - the next section up churchbridge locks will take a bit of imagination!
Excellent vlog Andy. Its amazing how much of the canal is still there. Keep up the great work. 😊🤗
Glad you enjoyed it - just waiting fir a bit of sunshine to continue the trip!

A 10 works for me! One structure I am missing from my collection of photos is Dog Bridge - it is proving elusive but I am sure its out there.

Really good video Andy.such a shame all the old canals have gone, worse that you cant even see where they were.Keep up the good work.
Will do Russ, glad you enjoyed it.
We're working on bringing it back. It will take time though.
@@LHCRT Can you get it done by this summer as coming up that way.....that would be great :)

Really enjoyed this andy the drone footage was excellent.
I've walked this canal many times and it's a beautiful walk.
A much under rated area. I love boating to the Common.
Great format Andy. Thank you for yet another great video.
Thanks Rob - more to follow if the sun will just come out to play!
Andy, this video worked really well, really enjoyed it. 👍
I was a bit nervous about a drone led format but it has been really effective (if a bit hairy on the drone front near all those pylons)

We moored in the basin below the bottom lock for years and regularly used the boatyard. Glad it brought back some good memories.

I include some third parties where I can - a lot of the stories come from the comments people leave.
I can see why you wouldn't want to fly that close to those power lines in that fog!

Scary with good visibility! The joeys were pulled out and burned I think.

It's on our to-do list: www.lhcrt.org.uk/hathertonmaps.htm
Can't see this canal ever being restored. Too much of it is diversions.
There is a way if you use the river channel as far as Churchbridge - but then it gets really creative!
You can see the new route on the maps on our website: www.lhcrt.org.uk/hathertonmaps.htm
