  • De-occupied Kharkiv region is believed to be the most mined region of Ukraine. From September 2022, when the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberates this oblast, sappers work day and night to demine the land. During the past year, they received 22 thousand calls from civilians: at the end of 2022 there is still 1,5 thousand unprocessed calls left - the rest they were able to solve.
“It’s scary all the time: now, yesterday was scary, tomorrow will be scary. This fear is our aid: when you stop worrying, you need to change your line of work,” says one of the sappers.
We spent two days with the workers of State Emergency Service of Ukraine to show how they get through demining calls from civilians, risking their lives every day.
