Proxmox VE 8.1 and PBS 3.1 have come out recently and in this video I take a look at the new features and how to upgrade an existing install. Some of the new features include secure boot, SDN, and new versions of software used under the hood. I also go over the upgrade process in this video
Take a look at the release notes here:
    PVE 8.1: www.proxmox.com/en/about/pres...
    PBS 3.1: www.proxmox.com/en/about/pres...
Let me know if you can help me get some LTO9 or other tapes to make a video about.

You do a better overview than then the Proxmox Channel does.

FYI, updates as of today move Debian to 12.3. Looking forward to the SDN video. Note that if you upgrade to the release with SDN, you have to make some manual changes where the full install from ISO doesn't need this step. It's detailed on their site docs.

Looking forward to your SDN video. Been wanting to mess around this for a while, but afraid to break some stuff ;)

Excellent video, many thanks. I was going through and updating my little 4 node cluster while watching it and appreciated the hint about upgrading the zfs pools, which I had not looked at for a year or more. One thing I noticed is that because of the change from pve-kernel to proxmox-kernel, I had nearly a dozen old pve-kernels on board on each host node, so removing all of them made my overall OS updates quite a bit faster. Now to look at upgrading Ceph which, btw, would make for a good short tutorial :)

Nicely done! Because of your video I decided to try out PBS - I've used PVE but never tried the backup thing - they should probably hire ya :) Keep up the great work!!!

Another great video. Question in regards to PBS. I have watched a couple of videos, but not sure about something 9have not looked into it much so far). Can I assigned external storage for PBS to use, say like on my TrueNAS? Thanks.

Yea pbs can use any storage external or internal. As long as it can be mounted itcshpuld work in pbs. It's suggested the storage has reasonably good performance to handle the pbs tasks like garbage collection that need more Io.

I upgraded and broke one of my nodes. Ended up just reinstalling 7.4 and it's running great 👍. Maybe give it. A month and try again.

I'm curious how it broke. Did it fail to boot or have other issues?

@@ElectronicsWizardry overall instability. Lots of crashes. But they're two 10+ year old laptops so who knows. Proxmox 8 won't install from a USB drive. I figured that was my first hint that it wasn't meant to be.

@@hotrodhunk7389 I had the same issue with my old laptop that was running 7.4 very happily. I updated to 8.0 and then suddenly it would keep rebooting regularly (like every 5/10 minutes). It turned out that my NIC (Qualcomm Atheros QCA8171) does not like the new kernel 6.5.
Until I find out how to fix that issue I am booting on the kernel 5.15 and it is rock stable again :)

I just realized that esxi is at version 8.0, Proxmox is at version 8.1, and XCP-ng is at 8.2.
