Attic is the FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE! Absolutely the most important area of any structure to insulate.

So thats a perfect video for showing how to put Roxul in for unconditioned air. But if I want to actually use my attic space I need to condition the air and that means insulating the roofline and walls. Can you do a video on that?

If you cover up all the wood with perpendicular pieces, how do you know where to stand next time you go up?, also I guess this method makes it so that theres no storage in the attic?

The perpendicular layers are actually correctly addressing thermal bridging as he stated as well as generally the only way to bring your insulation R values up to code. Many people mark the placement of rafters using various methods including from above and sticking up from below. Not all attics are designed to carry the weight of storage as well.

I considered Roxul/Rockwool, but the price pre square foot to do 30 square feet with two layers (R-45) is about $80 versus about $15 with cellulose for the same R value.

Cellulose will compress in time as well as spill into your soffits and block your vents

Hi, I’m curious as to why the insulation is applied to the floor of the attic and not directly under the roof decking. I live in Florida and wonder if Rockwool was installed directly under the roof decking and between the rafters, to keep the attic cooler, will the roof get too hot for a shingled roof? I see some attics installations have plastic venting systems that are installed between the roof and the insulation to provide air flow, and wonder if this would be necessary with Rockwool or is airflow needed?

It's because the attic is vented. If you were to add the insulation under the roof you would have a vented attic space and would basically be wasted your insulation since air is moving all around it defeating the purpose. A lot people are now creating conditioned attic spaces where they air seal the attic and insulate under the roof like you're describing. This brings up other issues though because your hvac equipment needs fresh air, and you need to regulate the air in your home it can't all be circulated air through hvac equipment. So it can be a tricky choice.

thanks for the video. Is it better to insulate the ceiling of the attic with that layer or just put it on top like you did for soundproofing (or both)?

What if I want to put a floor in my attic .

Your local codes determine the R value required for attic insulation. Insulation R values generally are dependent on their thickness which varies on the type of insulation. Even Rockwool has insulation that varies greatly in R value depending the thickness.

Did you seal leaks with foam if not that insulation will doing nothing for heat loss.

All penetrations, seams, chases, etc should be sealed in the attic no matter the type of insulating product of method used.

Hey I was just wondering if it was recommended to stagger the insulation so the top layer overlaps each seem of the insulation below?

How do you finish out this attic if you would like to make it into an additional room and now have all that extra batting? I do not have an attic, I have vaulted ceilings with fiberglass insulation. I am going to repair the roof and decking and would like to replace the fiberglass. What do you recommend?

      Hello Missy,
we would recommend using ROXUL COMFORTBATT for thermal performance and recommend reaching around and R-60 to maximize your comfort. Please visit our Cathedral Ceilings applications page to learn more bit.ly/1EV36RO or, you may call our Technical Innovation Center at 1800-265-6878

Which one is better blowin or bat insulation

    • @crimsonsamuraiftw
      @crimsonsamuraiftw 9 ปีที่แล้ว

+Altaf Saleh For standard fiberglass bats vs. blowin cellulose, cellulose is better. But Mineral Wool batts are far better than either based on their fire and water resistance, the only drawback is the price. Spray mineral wool is not really as water resistant, since it requires water based solution for the adhesion process.

cellulose can and generally will settlle over time. It is also easily blown into your soffits clogging the vents and/or blown away from exterior walls by the same necessary soffit vents.
