wonderful to see the old Hillman Hunter again. My dad owned several of these over the years and ive very fond memories of them. Shame this event isnt in the United Kingdom!! Thanks for posting ATVmidlands UK
I had a hustler while livening in australia in 1971.great car l got quite skilled at balancing the twin stromberg carburettors With the help of a Haynes manual
had two Hillmans about 20 years ago. A hunter and a royal. Put a piston through the block in the hunter coming home from work one night. it was a bloody freak of a car , did 100mph stock standard. never got the royal on the road and ended up giving them to a neighbor.
The Rootes group produced very sound cars, and whilst some may think that they were mechanically pedestrian, the complete opposite was true. They perfected the common parts bin strategy that could render a basic motor as standard, medium or higher tune depending on the model to which it would be fitted. Rootes also took design and appeal seriously, and their offerings had superior style to the Austin / Morris longbridge models of the day.
When I was still living on Gold Coast in 1970s, and nice old chap had a 'collection' of 2 restored Sunbeams, a 2-door rapier, and an Alpine...both painted in same gunmetal grey colour...I think he lived out in hinterland or Tamborine /Mudgeeraba or similiar, I worked in the Repco auto parts in southport, and he brought the Sunbeam in one morning to show us..they were both dream cars, at that point, because I had a 1960 Minx 3B.. Does anyone in the Hillman /Rootes clubs know of that chap ?
+Mr GShocker so that is actually a Mk 6 Minx...I've seen them, but of course badged as Hunter/Arrow is a lot more common, and with 1725cc engine?? Not as good a car as it replaced, imo..
+Countdown70s as a first car I was grateful and passed my driving test first time in it. I also learned so much about cars with constantly working on it as it kept breaking down.
I learned to drive on a Series IIIB MInx in Moonstone over Windsor Blue (I think) with four on the column. It was my mum's car and it was faithful to a fault. I later owned a white Series VI with the 1725 cc engine. Rootes produced very well made, reliable cars. What a shame the Imp drove them into the unsympathetic arms of the Chrysler Corporation and eventual oblivion.
A Harrington C-type Alpine! Had to be in a welcome climate for such lovelies to survive. In their native England with rain, mist and dew contriving to invade all those raw steel unpainted double skins and dead air spaces you could hear and see them dissolving like sugar lumps. I loved Rootes cars and my father would have nothing else until they went Chrysler. On the plus side he bought me welding equipment and I taught myself to gas and Mig weld. Essential for passing the MOT test. I also learned how to completely rustproof Hunters and had no metal/paintwork to do on his last Sceptre which was rustfree during the 12 years he kept it.The Dolomite he replaced it with was a different story!
If there was another Hillman show in Melbourne area, I'd like to know, might attend ...1960 3B sedan was my first car, and mark 3 wagon also in family...
You got that right. The Hillman brand was abandoned in Australia after the Hunter and Arrow of about 1971. You might be interested to know that we had a "unique" model called the Hustler right near the end. You can Google for a picture of it. Basically, it was a cheapened Hunter GT; it had the sports engine and suspension, but just a few vinyl blackouts and stripes. Not having a luxury interior or instruments made it competitive on price. I think all they did to the fairly spartan Hunter interior was bolt a small tachometer onto the dashtop! A Hillman Hustler would be highly highly collectable; but I would be surprised if there were any more than 2 or 3 left in all of Australia.
are people oblivious to a video camera?....it's as if that family just kept walking in front of the cam with no regard for what you were trying to do......so inconsiderate....

My first car was a Hillman Minx with the Hunter shape. Handbrake on the right and a 1500cc engine.
