The Chops really made a difference man, WITH GOOD CHOPS like that , it showed the profilers capacity and made the difference man, i am listening to the stuff again too :) thank you sir
Excellent example of 'practical use' of Kemper. I own one. They are great for all uses. Try running into a pair of powered full-range speakers. Incredible. My next 'experiment' is going to be a pair of EV full-ranges in a sealed cab. If it's like all the other methods I've tried... I expect it will be great. Been dealing with guitar since the '50s... always a 'tube' guy.I never imagined I'd live long enough to see technology get to this point. "Profiling" has changed the game. Great video!
Great vid, got the rack …will be running into two 2x12 EVH cabs stereo through Mesa boogie 2x100 stereo rectifier power amp …just got it yesturday firing it up Saturday spend all day with it ..,thanks again for the great vid 🤘🏾🍻👍🏽
GREAT TONE... this is exactly what I plan to do with it .. use a tube power amp and cabs and rock the world.. thanks for sharing Brother.. wishing you continued great tone..!
Man dude, you have some choice pieces of equip!!The Kemper does sound impressive, really.I still get along pretty well w/my Axe fx Ultra and a couple of descent tube amp heads, cabs.I went for a pair of QSC K10's last year which turned out to be a killer move...as they are insanely sweet sounding!I set them at unity gain nearly all the time and achieve nice results.I love your vids my man, keep up the nice work and jammin!Peace
I'm with you on keeping the favourite amps. It depends on the amount of sounds you need, but if you play in a cover band or somewhere else where you need a huge variety of sounds, the Kemper is worth its weight in gold. It just doesn't get any more comfortable than plugging this thing into the mixer and be ready.
Hey man, love your playing and demos. I use a few different software emulators (TH2, Guitar Rig 5, Amplitube and Jam Up), but you got me GAS'n for a Kemper. Sounds great!
Alot of the pro's are on in ear monitors and alot of them are moving away from 4x12s and cabs in general. Don't get me wrong, I have 6 Marshall 4x12s and a 77JMP and they sit at home. Why?? because their freaking huge!! and because once you go in-ear you can get that awesome direct sound of the profiles without a power amp ,cabinet or mic placement coloring it in unpredictable ways. It's also the same every night all the time. Another benefit is you can also move around the stage and hear the sweet spot anytime anywhere, instead of standing in one spot. I changed to in-ears years ago and have been totally direct for over 3 years. I let the PA do it's job and shape the entire sound, believe me it's much bigger this way out front and is easier to mix. I use a small Marshall Class 5 as a basic small stage monitor, to fill the middle of the stage a little bit and check my rig with, but it's not miked. The other benefit of this is your not going deaf:) I first saw the idea backstage at a Forienger show about 7 years ago, and now I know RUSH and Journey are doing similar things. Look it up! I saw RUSH live recently and I have never heard a better live sound. Also saw AX7 two weeks ago and their speakers are in iso boxes and they are using in-ears. The opening bands at the AX7 show with their 4x12s sounded terrible compared imo. It's the future and the Kemper speaks to this. I just bought the Kemper! So I'm pumped, cause now I can take my 77JMP with me as a profile. But I know their will always be old school purists who will refuse to see the value of this approach. I know!! you wanna feel the air moving behind you! I'm just throwing this out there for those who might give this new school idea some thought. If it's good enough for RUSH it's good for me. Rock on!!
I am considering the Kemper just answer one question....In your opinion... are they really worth $1700.00 because from what I see and hear so far I believe that they are, but I want to hear from an actual owner.
I've spent time with the axe II and I think when it comes down to it, the axe fx offers a superior effects processing solution and the kemper offers a better pure tone solution. The axefx can build an amp sound from the ground up and be ok at best IMO but the kemper NEEDS a quality amp/cab/mic/preamp setup to effectively capture a good tone but when you do, it's FAR better than anything out of the axe fx. Kemper effects are good but nothing special. everything most players would need.
ONLY if you buy the kemper that has the built in power amp. Otherwise, think of the kemper as an elaborate preamp. It generates the tone but has no way to power it into a cabinet. So you either have to get the kemper with the built in power amp or use an external rack mount power amp or the FX loop return of a guitar amp or run it into the mixer of a PA system. Running the kemper to a USB or firewire computer interface for recording though does not require a power amp.
No if anything, it sounds a lot bigger mainly because the speaker cabinets are capable of producing a much bigger sound spectrum than my studio monitors or headphones. And yes, cab sim is disabled in these vids running the kemper into a power section/cab.
no keep your favorite amps. the kemper is not going to replace them for live use. it will however make a great substitute for them in the studio IF you have profiled them with the amps setup in the very specific way you want them to sound. sure the kemper can really shape the captured profile pretty well but when it does, it doesn't do it like adjusting the actual preamp controls on the amp itself will do.
Love the patches you are using, nice tone. I am going to check out the new rack version at NAMM in a few days and if the unit validates what I am thinking I will buy one. Will have to hit you up for some of your patches, thanks for the video.
I use a VHT 2/90/2 with my KPA, and it is mindblowing. The KPA is much more sensitive to the power amp being used than other preamps in my experience. For instance, it did not sound good in the least in the power section of my buddys mark IV head. So yes, the Poweramp makes a HUGE difference in my opinion and experience with the KPA.
it also depends a lot on your profile. You need to find a profile that sounds good with your power amp and cabinet. Don't use the DI profiles, they are for direct input into a Cab.
Maybe I am not as big of a tone geek as I thought I was but, I honestly can't imagine it being THAT much better, if at all, than the 2902/2502. I did watch the videos, and he really did a great job of showing the differences, but how much of that I would hear with what I play (metal) and when playing live or with a band, I'd probably be really hardpressed to hear. DEFINITELY lighter though!!!!
There are quite a few very good ones for free. The bogner XTC and silver jubilee and friedman marshall profiles from OKstrat are really really good. There are also a few guys that are taking their kempers into professional studios and doing some very high quality profiles for a small price.
yeah as long as the head has an fx loop, you can run the kemper output into the fx loop return of the amplifier. I have another video where I did this. I ran the kemper into the fx return of my little JCA22H head and then had that head running to a 1x12 mako cab
yeah. be aware that some amps actually pass the fx loop through the tone stack (meaning that even if you hook the kemper into the fx loop, the amp's bass, trebel, mid, etc controls will still shape the sound) My JCA100 does this but the nitro doesn't. Does it make it bad? Nope. It just means that I have to accept the fact that I will have an extra tone stack shaping the sound if I choose to use the JCA.
yeah I did numerous videos using the whitebox. I did one or two showing the cab itself and an attempt to capture the sonic differences with it closed back, 1/4 open back and 1/2 open back. Didn't really translate too well in the video but the difference in the room was pretty big. several other of my videos (goldea rex, JCA22H vids, picovalve, cerberus, etc) it's an incredible cab and the price is insane for the quality.
depends on the size of the stage... saw wintersun live, they used just axe fx to PA and sounded bloody awesome. if you're at a venue where you get mic'ed anyway i dont think it really makes a difference apart from the first 5 meters from the stage... i think i'll get a kemper when i got the money together, i already have a 100 watts head (engl blackmore :D ) and probably couldn't use a second one.
you'd need a boost hitting the 22h I think. He uses a TON of gain and if you try to crank the preamp gain in the 22h to those levels, it gets too thick/compressed.
no. the end of the video shows exactly how it's hooked up. for this, it's going straight out into a power amp and into a pair of cabs with a mic on each. nothing is DI in this video.
Probably woudln't sound a whole lot different but I'd rather put what I assume to be close to the same amount of money into a separate power amp and passive monitors. That way you don't have a single point of failure that could bring your rig down (power amps are relatively cheap to replace and any will work and same with the monitors if they blow. If you blow something with one of those powered monitors, your'e stuck having to replace it with the SAME parts.
what about the profiles that the users upload on the Kemper Website? are they good? because i just have two amps. so i don't see much use profiling my two amps...
I’ve tried the Kemper a couple of times (with monitors and headphones) but just couldn’t quite gel with it. I can hear that some of the profiles are excellent captures of the real things….certainly as good as they need to be to my ears. However there’s always something about the reproduction through monitors that is missing for me, so I’m considering something like your method here. Do you think the power amp used makes much difference? I’m thinking about building a small stereo 2x10 or 2x12 combo with a powered kemper rack built in above a couple of guitar speakers. Do you think it’s worth using some kind of rack mount valve power amp? Using the SS one built into the kemper would be very convenient if the power amp doesn’t make so much difference…. Cheers for all your videos btw: I’ve been enjoying them since the “real” Splawn stuff. Always great tones and playing.
test oh yeah there is a massive difference in every aspect of the sound depending on which profile you use. Shit profiles = shit tone no matter what. Running it to a power amp and cab will always sound very different vs monitors simply due to the frequency range each respective setup is designed to reproduce. There's a lot of trial and error before you'll find what really makes you happy with the setup of this thing. A good profile through cheap speakers isn't going to sound good and a bad profile through the best speakers isn't going to sound good.
yeah either line out or direct out can have cab sim removed so you can run that into a power amp and cab on stage but the main output(s) to the house which would retain cab simulation.
Congratulations friend, great sound !!!! Could you share with me your first-minute Drive Preset Rig? Very good indeed, I'll use it with mine here !!! LOL Which speakers in your cabinet?
Since the profiles are created with a mic on a speaker, does playing the profile through a cab sound thinner than the same real amp would sound through the cab? Also are you using or disabling the speaker setting? Cheers, and keep up the great vids!
Have you ever tried a frfr amp/cab like Friedman asc-12 or mission engineering gemini. What you got there doesn't sound bad at all. Hearing some good stuff thru tubes with traditional cabs.
Sounds great! How can you run it this way and to FOH at the same time? How do you turn the cab sims off for a guitar cab but leave them on for the FOH?
Nice Video! Honestly it was one of the videos that put me over the top into getting the Kemper. I got the Jubilee profiles from Pete's site, but only tried a few of them briefly. My impression was not good but your tones sound killer. Which one are you using? #16 like in your other video?
I want to hit you with another question if you don't mind . .the price on the Kemper is dropping at a big online store because the foot controller will be out maybe the end of March and they are going to offer a bundle deal for both. I was wondering if you have ever hit the DSP limit on the Kemper. There have been 4 incarnations of the Axe FX and they upgraded the DSP, Line 6 gear chokes on DSp limits a year after they drop in stores. My only worry about buying one of these units is that the Kemper has been out for over 2 years now and I'm wondering if they are going to offer a newer, more powerful unit than the one out currently. Thats the downside to digital amp gear as far as I can see. Again, great demo. Peace.
They are updating the kemper with firmware updates instead of hardware it seems and the hardware updates are simply modifying the existing unit like with that built in power amp thing they can add. Kemper may have over-engineered the actual device with future-upgrades planned so that they wouldnt' actually have to reengineer the main unit.
What a great demo and beautiful sounds; I never thought about buying one of these before, but I am now giving it some SERIOUS consideration. Your PV260 into your speaker cab is great - I checked and I don't think Peavey is still making the 260.. do you have a recommendation on another power amp? Thank you sir!
Depending on your budget, I would look at the VHT/Fryette power amps, the mesas or even one of the old peavey tube power amps. I personally wouldn't really go with a solid state power amp but I know there are some companies making 1 rack unit amps specifically for modeling devices that may work. I just haven't played through any to give a good assessment. For what some of those high end solid state power amps cost, you could just buy a really good used tube rack mount power amp. If you're only going to be using it in the studio, you would only want to run the kemper DI into your interface. The kemper is untouchable in the studio IMO. I've played/owned all the popular modeling devices and the kemper is in a league of it's own and absolutely lives up to every bit of hype.
thx for your vids ! I'm seriously thinkin' about getting a Kemper myself, it's just so amazing ! But, 1) I thought maybe I'd wait for the second generation (kemper power head) to be released and 2) if I buy the ''old'' one, I having doubts concerning the power amp I should use with it. I don't know much about the peavey 260 you're using, would you say it's good value for money ? The Kemper being expensive enough, I can't afford spending too much money on an extra amp. Any piece of advice?
Thanks!, I´ve seen the setup on the video (by the way, great video ,and great sound!!!), but I was asking if you know if the Kemper has the possibility to go at the same time both: one way to a PA+Guitar Cab without Cab emulation, and at the same time direct to a mixer with cab emulation turned on. (sorry about my english, not very good) Thanks!.
It seems there are two versions of the Kemper, one with the power amp and one without. Can you use the one without the poweramp with a cab? @FastRedPonyCar
+Jose Morales no the one without the power amp is essentially a big fancy preamp. You would need to send it to a PA system or other type of power amp before sending to speakers unless running it direct into powered speakers.
My kemper was the unpowered version so think of it as a glorified effects processor. You still need a power amp of some kind or a powered speaker if you want to hear it. I'm not sure how many watts the old Peavey unit was but it was a dumpster rescue and sounds pretty bad compared to something like a Fryette power station or literally any other decent power amp. Kemper make a powered unit with the power amp built in so you can send directly out of the kemper into a normal guitar cabinet and there are companies who make power amps that slide into the back of the non-powered kemper to essentially do the same thing.
Good stuff man, here comes a noob question. Could I buy a kemper and just play with headphones/line directly to a soundcard to computer and get the same good sound as if I would mic it up
Wow an awesome demo for sure ;) makes me all the more wanna go straight to cab. I'm currently on the fence of either geting the unpowered kemper or just swing for the powerhead. Do you regret not having the convenience of a built-in poweramp (excluding retrofit options at least)?
best sounds in that Kemper ! Wonder if an external tube based amp fits better than the "inhouse" option Kemper is offering (600W) ? Any recommendations/thoughts are highly welcome.
It's only better if you think it sounds better. It will sound different that's for sure but there are quite a few guys who are using expensive powered QSC monitors or solid state rack power amps that cost just as much, if not more than a nice tube power amp would cost.
I use my silver jubilee and whitebox cab on stage. kemper stays at home in the studio. Edit: main reason is because I'd be waaay less upset if something happened to the marshall since it's easy to just buy a new headshell or take it to Granger amps in town to have him look at it. If something happened to the kemper like some random drunk guy/girl falling and knocking it over (happend a few times with the splawn but it's an unkillable beast) or a drink gets spilled on it, it would probably be a very expensive fix after sending it off to Germany. Nothing inside the kemper is cheap. The marshall is filled with 50 cent caps and resistors lol
Great demo . .first one I've seen actually using cabs as opposed to going DI. Plus most demos are all devil weenie death metal. I'm impressed with the stereo delay and reverbs. i was wondering how this does with the effects loop as I have a bunch of pedals i don't want to abandon. Plus I want to be able to do the Brian May dual delay stuff and I don't think the Kemper can do that from what I've seen Also, i have yet to see any kind of foot controller for this unit. And I guess it goes without saying that this unit cannot do a dual amp thing. This is one of the few demos on this that I've watched all the way thru as most are gabfests. Great demo , man. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
thanks man. yeah the kemper's loop works as you'd expect. I have a couple of pedals that I've run through the loop and if I used this thing live, that's one way I'd be running it. It doesn't have a kemper branded foot controller but there are companies custom programming midi chips to use in midi boards like the FCB1010 www.uno4kemper.com/ You could theoretically run 2 delays by using the kemper's built in delay and then have your own pedal delay.
There is a foot controller out now called the Kemper Remote. They showed it at NAMM at the weekend. so look it up. I don't know when it is in Stores. but i heard its about 400€ here in Germany. Cheers!
Zimt18 Tyvm for the info . . I couldn't believe that Kemper would not make a FC for this unit . . I wonder if they will push this to do dual amp models like the Fractal does, that would be an Axe FX killer. Cheers mate.
Hey mate, How do you have the output settings on your kemper set up? I have the same basic setup with a power amp and cab but for some reason can't seem to get any sound.
Rope Head you should be able to run a single cable from the headphone output or either output on the back into the fx loop return of most guitar amps. I say most because some (like my mark V) won't let you do that. If you hold down the kemper's output button at the top right, make sure nothing is muted in there (like the headphone level if you're using that jack)
Do these have tubes in them or all solid state? Granted this is a TH-cam video through my PC Speakers, but it sounds pretty damn good for a review. Can you do feedback (Hendrix) with these?
everything in this video is solid state. cheap solid state peavey amp and the kemper is also all solid state. if you run the kemper to an amp and speakers it will feedback just like any other amp.
shouldn't be a problem. That peavey power amp is hot garbage though. You can find a much better one for cheap on craigs list, ebay or pawnshops if you are on a tight budget. I only used this one because it was free. If you have a bit more money to spend, there are some decent inexpensive tube power amps from carvin or peavey or even a used mesa that would also work well. The Matrix GT800FX is a really popular power amp that the axe fx guys use but I've never tried one myself.
I made the mistake of actually buying an 11 rack not too long ago :/ It was not impressive at all and worse yet, basically required you to use protools to utilize all of it's features. Good thing I had a 30 day return period.
wow, I have a kemper... I can never achieve this kind of tone through guitar cabs... It always sounds kinda weird through a 6x10 or through a 2x12 with v30s... I have the powered version and always use cab off!..
It took me a long time to get the mic's positioned just right hahaa. that played a big part in the sound. All power amps are different though so expect yours to always sound different. It doesn't mean it will sound worse, just different.
I agree. The peavey is a very cheap power amp though. I think a higher quality solid state power amp would sound better than the peavey but I still think a nice tube power amp would sound best. It would just weigh a lot more. I would love to own a VHT power amp to use with this.
+Locoandchooch no I just put them up on the rig exchange thing on kemper's website. Kemper owners have already paid enough money for the unit itself. Asking them to shell out more is dumb unless you actually make kemper profiles for a living.
The Chops really made a difference man, WITH GOOD CHOPS like that , it showed the profilers capacity and made the difference man, i am listening to the stuff again too :) thank you sir
Omg, these profiles sound AMAZING. Good job bro!

I love that thing. I think it looks so retro (which I like). Like some Soviet space satellite tracker or something. I'm thinking of getting one.
yeah it will work either way. you may prefer the way a profile sounds running the kemper DI vs sending it to a power amp/speakers.

depends on the size of the stage... saw wintersun live, they used just axe fx to PA and sounded bloody awesome. if you're at a venue where you get mic'ed anyway i dont think it really makes a difference apart from the first 5 meters from the stage... i think i'll get a kemper when i got the money together, i already have a 100 watts head (engl blackmore :D ) and probably couldn't use a second one.
This sounds excellent. glad i finally picked one up
Congrats! My profiles (as well as lots more) are up on the kemper rig exchange!
you can use the kemper's master volume knob to control overall volume.
I love it really rich clear tone I want this
great vid as always. i wish i could afford a kemper, definitely in my wish list :)
you'd need a boost hitting the 22h I think.
Great video. What about running the Kemper into those powered speakers they have out there?
so essentially what your saying is that i could buy the kemper and a cabinet and thats it, itll work perfectly fine?
Been wondering about this. Thanks!
Can you run the cab sim direct to front of house while cutting it off for the cabinets on stage?
yeah either line out or direct out can have cab sim removed so you can run that into a power amp and cab on stage but the main output(s) to the house which would retain cab simulation.
Congratulations friend, great sound !!!!
Could you share with me your first-minute Drive Preset Rig?
Very good indeed, I'll use it with mine here !!! LOL
Which speakers in your cabinet?
Since the profiles are created with a mic on a speaker, does playing the profile through a cab sound thinner than the same real amp would sound through the cab? Also are you using or disabling the speaker setting? Cheers, and keep up the great vids!
depends on where you'll be playing. the kemper will never replace the real deal on stage.
Nice cab man!
Have you ever tried a frfr amp/cab like Friedman asc-12 or mission engineering gemini. What you got there doesn't sound bad at all. Hearing some good stuff thru tubes with traditional cabs.
No I haven't made any significant investments into other gear to use this thing live. I have amps for that.
never heard of it. I'm waiting for steve fryette to release his new tube power amp that he's designing for these modeling/profiling amps.
Sounds great! How can you run it this way and to FOH at the same time? How do you turn the cab sims off for a guitar cab but leave them on for the FOH?
the video that KPA with JCA22 power amp sounds better, just my opinion. Great job!
Nice Video! Honestly it was one of the videos that put me over the top into getting the Kemper. I got the Jubilee profiles from Pete's site, but only tried a few of them briefly. My impression was not good but your tones sound killer. Which one are you using? #16 like in your other video?
Can you have a direct output to a mixer with csb emulation and another output to a pa and guitar cab without cab emu?
Why would u se the peavey power amp, when that kemper has a built in 600 watt stereo power amp?
+Glen drover mine doesn't have the built in power amp. that is an optional feature.
(sorry about my english, not very good)
Thanks!.
just ordered the 600w powerhead version in black, now i just have to wait +2 weeks...
that chorus sounds amazballz
Alex Doty chorus would be the one fx I stay away from. Hate it.
I normally hate it, but on occasion I like it cause it cuts through.
So you don’t need a power amp with the Kemper or is that the bottom rack in video? How many watts is it?
Could I buy a kemper and just play with headphones/line directly to a soundcard to computer and get the same good sound as if I would mic it up
You do not know how cool that noodling sounds when your having a beer but i forgive you :)
Wow an awesome demo for sure ;) makes me all the more wanna go straight to cab. I'm currently on the fence of either geting the unpowered kemper or just swing for the powerhead. Do you regret not having the convenience of a built-in poweramp (excluding retrofit options at least)?
no I don't need the built in power section because this stays in my studio and is run DI into my Scarlett USB interface box.
Would the poweramp rack version run into a usb interface box just as well? I'd also want to definitely take the rack on the road too.
Lucas Sharp yeah they function the same from what I've gathered.
Thanks man, cheers for that. Power Rack version coming soon, so stoked!
Doug Aldrich fan by any chance???
Great Sound. ? High volume level (in the room)? Or acceptable for a house?
Sounds incredible. Awesome.
Thanks for a quick answer! One more question haha! Could I use my 120w guitar amp head (only as a powersource) for the kemper?
best sounds in that Kemper ! Wonder if an external tube based amp fits better than the "inhouse" option Kemper is offering (600W) ? Any recommendations/thoughts are highly welcome.
It's only better if you think it sounds better. It will sound different that's for sure but there are quite a few guys who are using expensive powered QSC monitors or solid state rack power amps that cost just as much, if not more than a nice tube power amp would cost.
yeah it can do that. you can send to multiple outputs at once.
you felt much difference in power amps? Solid State vs tube?
Nope
Dude, I love your Splawn QR profiles. Do you run your Kemper this way live for stage volume, or did you end up with a FRFR?
I use my silver jubilee and whitebox cab on stage. kemper stays at home in the studio.
Edit: main reason is because I'd be waaay less upset if something happened to the marshall since it's easy to just buy a new headshell or take it to Granger amps in town to have him look at it. If something happened to the kemper like some random drunk guy/girl falling and knocking it over (happend a few times with the splawn but it's an unkillable beast) or a drink gets spilled on it, it would probably be a very expensive fix after sending it off to Germany.
Nothing inside the kemper is cheap. The marshall is filled with 50 cent caps and resistors lol
hi. i got an engl tube poweramp. the only way to connect the kpa and my poweramp is to go with 4cm right?
you could run left and right outputs of the kemper into the left/right inputs of the power amp.
It doesn't have a kemper branded foot controller but there are companies custom programming midi chips to use in midi boards like the FCB1010
www.uno4kemper.com/
You could theoretically run 2 delays by using the kemper's built in delay and then have your own pedal delay.
Men what a sound!are you still using the kemper to these days?
yeah pretty much it's the only amp I play at home.
thanx , i think i'm pretty close to buy a KPA power rack !
This Kind of solo with delay and reverb at 4:30 sound sooooo epic :O
Rocktron nitro?? or wich one??
Can you do feedback (Hendrix) with these?
everything in this video is solid state. cheap solid state peavey amp and the kemper is also all solid state.
if you run the kemper to an amp and speakers it will feedback just like any other amp.
i dont know if i want a kemper or a nitro now...
Hey dude great vid is this set up loud enough to gig in front of 100 people?
shouldn't be a problem.
Ok thnx lots dude!
Cool, thanks for responding.
Do you sell your profiles?
+Locoandchooch no I just put them up on the rig exchange thing on kemper's website. Kemper owners have already paid enough money for the unit itself. Asking them to shell out more is dumb unless you actually make kemper profiles for a living.
HI, IM JUST BUY A RETRO-CHANNEL POWER AMP, ARE YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS AMP TO USE MY KEMPER WITH IT. THANKS ANY COMMENT OR SUGESTION I APRECIATED.
