The steps to perform calibration for the SJX1502N/E are similar for the various Ohaus Scout SPX, SKX or SJX except the value of calibration weight used for calibration is different. For explain the SJX622NE uses a 600g weight for calibration while the SJX1502N/E requires a 1500g mass for span calibration. This makes sense since the SJX622N/E has a maximum weighing capacity of 620g while the max capacity for the SPX1502N/E is 1500g.
The Ohaus Scout security switch must be is in the unlocked position. If the security switch is in the locked position you cannot perform calibration. If the SJX1502N/E is used in a legal for trade commercial weighing application the Weights & Measures Inspector will always place the security switch in the locked position since this is a requirement of NTEP Approval.
Some people have called us asking why can't you calibrate a LFT scale after it has been placed into service. The reason is there can be unscrupulous people that could manipulate the calibration so the scale reads underweight or lightweight.
Span calibration for the SJX1502N/E is user selectable and you can use either a 1000g or 1500g. The default setting is 1500 grams. If I use 1510 grams instead of 1500 gram the scale will read weights light. So I'll now perform the calibration using 1510 grams.
Now when I place a 1000g calibration weight on the scale it displays the weight as 993.39 grams. If you where selling to a pawnbroker 1000 grams of silver with an incorrectly calibrated SJX1502NE you would be getting paid for only 993.39 grams and getting short changed 6.61 grams. So this is why the Weights & Measures Inspector locks out the scale from calibration once the scale is put into service.
To correctly perform calibration the scale should be powered up for at least 30 minutes, the scale needs to be level. Verify the spirit level bubble is centered and if not use the adjustable feet to level the digital scale.
Span calibration is a 2 point calibration and the SJX1502N/E allows you to select from either 1000g or 1500g for the second point. Span calibration resets the scale’s weighing range using two weight values: zero and a weight value at or near the digital scale’s capacity. We'll now demonstrate span calibration.
Linearity calibration uses a 3 point calibration at 0, 1000g and 1500g. For linearity calibration you do not have a choice of selecting different weights values but instead must have 1000g and 1500g. Linearity calibration minimizes deviation between actual and displayed weights within the scale’s weighing range. Three weight values are used: zero, a weight value within the scale's weighing range which is set to 1000g, and a weight value at or near the balance’s specified capacity which is preset at 1500g. We'll now demonstrate linearity calibration.
